Abstract:We have developed a vapor–liquid–phase combined, layer-by-layer epitaxial growth strategy for fabricating ultralong ZnO one-dimensional vertical arrays. A key point is the activation of the second top epitaxial growth by treating shorter arrays in a growth solution. By alternating solution- and VS-growth steps for three times, we can tune the length of the 1D arrays from 41 to 150μm. The arrays were found to show an excellent photoelectrocatalytic activity under UV irradiation, higher than that of high-performance TiO2 nanotube arrays.

Abstract:Long vertically aligned ZnO nanowire arrays were synthesized using an ultra-fast microwave-assisted hydrothermal process. Using this method, we were able to grow ZnO nanowire arrays at an average growth rate as high as 200 nm min(-1) for maximum microwave power level. This method does not suffer from the growth stoppage problem at long growth times that, according to our investigations, a normal microwave-assisted hydrothermal method suffers from. Longitudinal growth of the nanowire arrays was investigated as a function of microwave power level and growth time using cross-sectional FESEM images of the grown arrays. Effect of seed layer on the alignment of nanowires was also studied. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed c-axis orientation and single-phase wurtzite structure of the nanowires. J-V curves of the fabricated ZnO nanowire-based mercurochrome-sensitized solar cells indicated that the short-circuit current density is increased with increasing the length of the nanowire array. According to the UV-vis spectra of the dyes detached from the cells, these increments were mainly attributed to the enlarged internal surface area and therefore dye loading enhancement in the lengthened nanowire arrays.
Large-Scale and Rapid Synthesis of Ultralong ZnO Nanowire Films via Anodization

Abstract:In this Study, we report a facile and rapid synthesis strategy for preparing ultralong ZnO nanowire (NW) arrays by anodizing zinc foil at room temperature in a slightly basic solution, followed by annealing treatment. Detailed structure and composition characterizations are presented, including scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. We also explore the effects of temperature, applied voltage, and pretreatment on the anodization process. Oil the optimized conditions, dense NW film can be achieved, resulting in the enhanced optical absorption. More importantly, the as-prepared ZnO NWs have exhibited reasonable electronic properties. The zinc anodization technique, which does not involve complex chemicals and steps, is a low-cost and high-efficiency approach to large-scale synthesis of ultralong ZnO NW film, Suggesting the great potential in dye-sensitized solar cells and gas sensors.

Abstract:Uniform rod-like and multi-pod-like ZnO whiskers were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process. The precursor used in the hydrothermal process is a mixture of Zn(OH)2 and polyethylene glycol. Single-crystalline ZnO whiskers in diameters of ∼150nm and lengths of 2–4μm were obtained at 200°C for 10h. The rod-like ZnO whiskers have sharp tips that are only several nanometers. Multi-pod-like ZnO whiskers with six or more pods were discovered in the as-synthesized ZnO whiskers. The whiskers grow along the [0001] direction. The as-synthesized ZnO whiskers show UV (∼401nm), blue (∼443nm) and blue–green (∼484nm) emission bands when they were excited by a Xe lamp.

Abstract:ZnO whiskers with a length of 30–40 (m and a diameter of about 1 (m were synthesized by co-precipitation of ZnSO4 and Na2CO3 solution at room temperature followed by hydrothermal treatment of the as-prepared Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 precursor at 160 °C for 6 h. The increase of the initial solution pH promotes the hydrothermal conversion of the particulate Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 to ZnO whiskers. Abstract:The cluster and rod-like ZnO whiskers were obtained via a simple hydrothermal route in the presence of sodium succinate hexahydrate (Na2C4H4O4·6H2O) at 180 °C for 24 h by using zinc salts and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4·H2O). The microstructures of the as-synthesized samples were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscopes and X-ray diffraction. The cluster whiskers with typical widths of about 300 nm possess hexagonal structure. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra of the whiskers show a strong UV emission at 397 nm, as well as a blue emission at 451 and 466 nm.

Abstract:Arrays of novel ultralong nanoporous ZnO nanobelts (NBs) are developed with a two-step synthesis strategy. This strategy combines two processes, a rapid hydrothermal synthesis of vertically aligned ultralong Zn(OH)F NB arrays directly on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) at pH = 8.5 and conversion of a pyrolysis Zn(OH)F NB intermediate into nanoporous ZnO NB. Two factors play crucial roles in the rapid synthesis of ultralong Zn(OH)F nanobelt (NB) arrays, i.e., the pretreatment of the FTO substrate before entering the aqueous solution of Zn2+ (2 M) and the presence of excess F- in the hydrothermal reaction solution. Upon the subsequent pyrolysis of the Zn(OH)F precursor at 500 degrees C for 2 h, ultralong nanoporous ZnO NB arrays are successfully generated. In addition, every NB is composed of a large number of nanocrystals and nanopores, which exhibit preferred orientation. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). based on the ultralong porous ZnO NB arrays are assembled, and a high conversion efficiency (eta) of 3.28% for a 27 mu m thick film is obtained at 0.9 suns. This can be attributed to the high internal surface area and pronounced light scattering, as well as a good electron collection efficiency comparable with that of ZnO nanorod (NR)-based DSSCs. Abstract:Hexagonal ZnO group whiskers synthesized from Zn(NH3)42+ precursor at 145°C in a structure-directing template solvent (2.5%v/v alcohol) show strong photoluminescence at 409 and 420nm. FE-SEM and TEM observation reveals that the ZnO group whiskers consist of uniform pencil-like whiskers with the diameter of around 1.5μm and the length of up to 6μm.

Abstract:ZnO hierarchical aggregates have been successfully synthesized by solvothermal methods through reaction of zinc acetate and potassium hydroxide in methanol solution. The shapes of the aggregates were controlled by varying the ratio of Zn 2+ and OH − ions in the reaction system, while the size can be tuned from 2 μm to 100 nm. Oriented attachment was found to be the main mechanism of the three-dimensional assembly of small ZnO nanocrystallites into large aggregates. The performance of these aggregates in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) indicated that hierarchical structured photoelectrodes can increase energy conversion efficiency of DSCs effectively when the sizes of aggregates match the wavelengths of visible light.

Abstract:Large-scale ZnO nanowire arrays vertically aligned on the substrates were achieved from cycle growth without surfactants. The 8 Em long ZnO nanowire arrays were prepared by 20 cycles. The aspect ratio of ZnO nanowire can be increased with increasing the growth cycle. As displayed by microstructures and photoluminescence (PL) analysis, the ZnO nanowire was good single crystal and the defects in the as-prepared ZnO nanowire arrays were controlled at a low concentration. By increasing the length and aspect ratio of ZnO nanowire, the performances of dye-sensitized solar cells based on the ZnO nanowire arrays were improved. Abstract:In this paper, by altering reactants concentration, ZnO spindles with different sizes were controllably prepared through a fast precipitation process in aqueous solution. Some important characteristics such as specific area, macropore structure, light scattering and electron transport properties of the photoanodes were systematically investigated. The results showed that photoanodes composed of small-sized ZnO spindles had a larger specific area for dye-loading, while the large-sized ZnO spindles had more efficient light scattering and electron transport properties. Furthermore, to combine the advantages of different sized ZnO particles, composite photoanodes were fabricated by mixing together ZnO spindles of different sizes. Compared with the dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using photoanodes with single-sized ZnO spindles, the devices based on composite photoanodes showed a higher short-circuit photocurrent density without obvious decrease in open-circuit voltage and fill factor. As a result, photovoltaic performances of the DSCs were improved remarkably.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) with various morphologies consisting of nanoparticles with a diameter of approximately 20 nm have been successfully prepared by hydrothermal method from zinc nitrate (Zn (NO3)2)/carbamide (CO(NH2)2) solution. The morphologies and phase structures of the as-prepared ZnO samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD). Results show that the morphologies of the as-prepared ZnO are successively present in broom-like, cabbage-like, chinese cabbage-like, honeycomb-like with the increase of the CO(NH2)2 concentration from 0.1 M to 1 M. The photovoltaic performances of dye-sensitized solar cells, based on ZnO with various morphologies as the photoelectrodes, are unobvious. With the morphologies of ZnO evolving, the short circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) increases from 2.35 to 3.72 mA/cm2, the fill factor (FF) increases from 0.400 to 0.570, and the corresponding conversion efficiency (η) varies from 0.520 % to 1.200 %. The low η may be due to the formation of the Zn2+/dye polymers.

Abstract:A one-step thermal evaporation and vapor-phase transport method was utilized to synthesize porous ZnO nanofibers in large scale. The synthesized nanofibers are highly porous, with diameters in the range of 200–700nm and lengths of several micrometers. The addition of the CuCl2·2H2O into the Zn precursor powder was proved to be critical for the formation of the porous structures, which were proposed to be resulted from the decomposition of the unstable Cl-containing intermediate products such as zinc hydroxide chloride or zinc oxide chloride hydrate phases. In addition, a demonstration of applying the porous ZnO nanofibers as the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells is provided.

Abstract:Different morphologies of ZnO micro-nanostructures were successfully prepared by hydrothermal method at relatively mild conditions using ammonia to adjust the pH of the reaction system. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, optical reflectance spectra, and photocurrent-voltage curve. The results demonstrated that the morphologies of ZnO changed from "wire" to "flower", "urchin" and "wire" with increase in the pH of the reaction system due to the increased concentration of ammonia. The diffused reflectance spectra illustrated that the reflectance of denser urchin-like ZnO was low at 18% in the visible region. When the as-synthesized ZnO micro-nanostructures were used as the anode of the dye sensitization solar cell, the denser urchin-like ZnO exhibited the best photoelectric properties. The short circuit current (J(sc)), open circuit voltage (V-oc), and conversion efficiency (eta) were 6.50 mA/cm(2), 0.682 V, and 1.92%, respectively. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
Fabrication of Hierarchically Assembled Microspheres Consisting of Nanoporous ZnO Nanosheets for High-Efficiency Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Porous nanosheet-assembled ZnO microspheres (PNMSs) were synthesized via one-pot hydrothermal treatment followed by calcination and were used as photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). An overall light conversion efficiency of up to 5.16% has been achieved with this unitary material and structure. Superior to the referenced porous nanosheet-assembled ZnO microflowers (PNMFs) and porous dispersed ZnO nanosheets (PDNs), as well as precedent nanostructures, the present PNMS fully accommodates all indispensable characteristics for a high-performance DSSC through: (1) the hierarchical ZnO microsphere generates a prominent aggregation-induced light scattering center, which is in favor of enhancing the light absorption and the light propagation; (2) the single crystal nature of the nanosheet enhances the transport of injected electrons along the nanosheet, providing a direct electron pathway throughout the film and lowering the hole-electron recombination; (3) the thin thickness and porous character of the nanosheets results in a large surface area for dye adsorption; (4) intersectional contact with one another of the nanosheets of neighboring spheres increases the transport channel of the injected electrons through the adjacent spheres, avoiding the high resistance existing in the nanoparticle-based sphere aggregates due to the relatively small contact area among the aggregates; (5) these spherical assemblies form large external pores in the photoelectrode film, thus providing a "main trunk'' for the quick electrolyte diffusion throughout the ZnO layer in the film. Simultaneously, the nanopores embedded in the nanosheet act as "branch lines'' for more efficient electrolyte diffusion into the interstices of the densely packing nanosheets in the sphere.
Synthesis and Mechanism of 1D ZnO Based on Alkaline Dissolution‐Conversion Strategy of High Stable and Soluble Ɛ‐zn(oh)2

Abstract:A high soluble and stable epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) precursor is synthesized at below room temperature to efficiently prepare ZnO whiskers. The experimental results indicate that the formation of ZnO whiskers is carried out mainly via two steps: the formation of ZnO seeds from epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) via the in situ solid conversion, and the following growth of whiskers via dissolution-precipitation route. The decrease of temperature from 25 to 5 degree celsius promotes the formation of epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) with higher solubility and stability, which balances the conversion and dissolution rates of precursor. The Rietveld refinement, DFT calculations and MD simulations reveal that the primary reason for these characteristics is the expansion of e-Zn(OH)(2) lattice due to temperature, causing difficulties in the dehydration of adjacent OH. Simultaneously, the larger specific surface area favors the dissolution of epsilon-Zn(OH)(2). Based on this precursor, well-dispersed ZnO whiskers with 9.82 mu m in length, 242.38 nm in diameter, and an average aspect ratio of 41 are successfully synthesized through a SDSN-assisted hydrothermal process at 80 degree celsius. The process has an extremely high solid content of 2.5% (mass ratio of ZnO to solution) and an overall yield of 92%, which offers a new approach for the scaled synthesis of high aspect ratio ZnO whiskers by liquid-phase method.
Facile Solution Synthesis and Characterization of Zno Mesocrystals and Ultralong Nanowires from Layered Basic Zinc Salt Precursor

Abstract:Novel hierarchical ZnO mesocrystals and ultralong ZnO nanowires have been prepared from a precursor of synthetic layered basic zinc acetate nanobelts by a facile solution route in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to characterize the products. Refluxing an aqueous dispersion of the nanobelts precursor in the presence of PVP at 100 degrees C for 6 h leads to the formation of well-defined hierarchical ZnO bundled mesocrystals. With an increase in the basicity of the reaction solution, ultralong ZnO nanowires were prepared. On the basis of the experimental results, a mechanism involving the self-organization of smaller inorganic building blocks during the crystallization of ZnO crystals was proposed. It has been demonstrated that PVP plays a key role in the formation of such novel hierarchical mesocrystals. Photoluminescence results show that the as-synthesized ZnO bundled mesocrystals have a broad yellow emission at above 568 nm excited by UV light, and this yellow emission band is attributed to a singly charged oxygen vacancy or other defects. Our work may shed some light on the design of other well-defined complex superstructures, and the as-grown architectures may have potential applications.

Abstract:Hierarchical ZnO aggregates assembled by orderly aligned nanorods were prepared via a facile solvothermal method using diethylene glycol as solvent and zinc acetate dehydrate as precursor. Time dependent trails evidenced that the formation of the hierarchical aggregates experienced a multistep self-assembly process. Moreover, it was found that the reaction medium plays an important role in the assembling process and the diameter of the product could be tuned by simply altering the precursor dosage. The hierarchical product was further applied as scattering layer in bi-layered dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), and a high conversion efficiency of 5.2% was demonstrated, indicating a substantial improvement compared with the nanoparticle cell of 2.7%. Based on the optical and electrochemical investigations, the high conversion efficiency was mainly ascribed to the unique hierarchical structure of the ZnO aggregates. The rough surface of the nanorod subunits could enhance the dye loading capacity and the aggregates with micrometer sized diameter could improve the scattering effect. Moreover, the orderly aligned nanorods could minimize the grain boundaries, suppress the surface recombination and provide a direct pathway for fast electron transport, which therefore enhance the collection efficiency of the photoelectrons.

Abstract:A novel interface precipitation method has been developed to synthesize hierarchically structured ZnO nanocrystallite aggregates. Such synthesized ZnO nanocrystallite aggregates demonstrated as promising structure for high power conversion efficiency when used as photoelectrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). It has large specific surface area, efficient dye-loading and effective light scattering within the photoelectrode. Such structured ZnO film annealed at different temperature was analyzed and a power conversion efficiency of 5.07% has been obtained with annealed at 300 oC.
