Abstract:The pretreatment of biomass materials is critical for improvement of the overall production process and product quality. In this work, a dilute zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solution was used to pretreat bamboo chips, followed by defiberization (mechanical pulping). Compared to the results from the traditional chemi-thermomechanical pulping process, the results from this study showed that the refining energy consumption of the modified process was lowered 27%, and the tensile and burst index of the resultant pulp increased 22% and 82%, respectively. The morphological changes on the fiber surface, functional groups, and crystallinity of resultant pulps due to the ZnCl2 treatment were also analyzed.
Combination of steam explosion and laccase-mediator treatments prior to Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulping

Abstract:The effect of a pretreatment consisting of steam explosion (SE) followed by a laccase mediator system (LMS) stage on Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulping has been evaluated and compared with fungal pretreatments. Pretreatment with SE and LMS was more efficient than pretreatments using Pycnoporus sanguineus and Trametes sp. I-62. Steam explosion not only improved the enzyme penetration into the wood chips and shortened the pulping process by 60%, but also extracted around 50% of the hemicelluloses which could be converted into value-added products. The optimal conditions for the LMS treatment were 3h, 3UA/g and 40°C. Compared to SE, the SE/LMS treatment yielded an increase in delignification of 13.9% without affecting pulp properties, provided a similar screened kraft yield, and reduced consumption of chemical reagents Na(2)S and NaOH by 11.5% and 6.3%, respectively. Therefore, SE/LMS is a promising pretreatment for converting the pulp mill into a forest bio-refinery.
Effects of Continuous Steam Explosion on the Microstructure and Properties of Eucalyptus Fibers

Abstract:Laboratory-designed continuous steam explosion (CSE) equipment was used to prepare continuous steam-exploded eucalyptus fibers (CSEEFs). The pretreatment intensity was varied by changing treatment time, and effects of CSE on the composition, microstructure, surface composition, thermal properties, and crystallinity of CSEEFs were investigated. Composition analysis showed that CSE had a significant impact on lignin and hemicellulose, but little on cellulose. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the middle lamella, primary wall, and outer secondary wall were progressively stripped as the CSE time increased. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that concentrations of extractives and lignin were higher on the surface of eucalyptus wood than CSEEFs’, and the exposed carbohydrate fraction increased with increasing CSE time. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that eucalyptus wood has one glass transition (193.5 °C), whereas two glass transitions at 56.7 and 138.5 °C were observed for CSEEF-5. X-ray diffraction results suggested that crystallinity of samples decreased with increasing CSE time. Thermogravimetric analysis showed the pyrolysis peak temperature of samples first increased and then decreased slightly as CSE time increased. These data will be useful for the optimization and application of CSE technology.

Abstract:Pretreatment is a key process restricting the development of biorefinery. This work developed a pretreatment process based on an ethanolamine/acetamide alkaline deep eutectic solvent (ADES). Under microwave assistance, pure ADES pretreatment at 100 degrees C for 10 min achieved 95.9 % delignification and 95.2 % hemicellulose removal of bamboo shoot shells (BSS). Further, when 75 % water was added to pure DES to prepare hydrated DES (75 %-HADES), impressive delignification (93.2 %), hemicellulose removal (92.2 %) and cellulose recovery (94.8 %) were still achieved. The cellulose digestibility of the 75 %-HADES pretreated solid residue was significantly increased from 12.2 % (the control) to 91.2 %. Meanwhile, the structural features of hemicellulose and lignin macromolecules fractionated by 75 %-HADES pretreatment were well preserved, offering opportunities for downstream utilization. Overall, this work proposes an effective pretreatment strategy with the potential to enable the utilization of all major components of bamboo shoot shells.

Abstract:Efficient extraction of Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) and full utilization of Eucommia lignocellulosic resources remain a challenge. In this study, a fast formic acid (FA) and petroleum ether (PE) biphasic condition was constructed for pretreating the Eucommia seed shell for the production of high purity EUG. Compared to traditional pretreatment methods, the biphasic system achieved a superior EUG yield (>95 %) and purity, while effectively removing lignin and hemicelluloses. Meanwhile, the obtained EUG and FA extractive (lignin and hemicelluloses) were combined to create a membrane material with excellent mechanical properties (Tensile strength is 27.5 MPa, Elongation at break is 591 %) and excellent UV shielding properties. Finally, the residue (cellulose) was fabricated into a porous carbon material with excellent specific capacitance (140.2 F g(- 1) at the current density of 0.5 A g(-1)) and cycling properties (remained 95.7 % after 10,000 cycles). In summary, the procedures above efficiently and comprehensively use the Eucommia seed shell resource. The biphasic system comprised of FA and PE displays outstanding economic advantages and recyclability, providing an attractive route to practical applications.

Abstract:To make full use of apple pomace, pretreatment with steam explosion (SE) was investigated to determine its effects on the yield and functionality of soluble dietary fiber (SDF). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the effects of SE parameters. According to the quadratic polynomial model, the optimum SE parameters were as follows: steam pressure, 0.51 MPa; residence time, 168 s; and sieving mesh size, 60. Under the optimized conditions, the SDF yield from apple pomace after SE was 29.85%, which is 4.76 times the yield of SDF (6.27%) in untreated apple pomace. The SDF prepared with SE also exhibited higher functionality values. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) indicated that the SDF surface from apple pomace was poriferous, rough and lax after SE treatment; therefore, it can be concluded that the SDF morphology was altered by the steam explosion.
Extrusion process to enhance the pretreatment effect of ionic liquid for improving enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass

Abstract:Extrusion process using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]Ac) in co-solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), was conducted to improve the pretreatment effect on the enzymatic saccharification of pussy willow (Salix gracilistyla Miq.). The use of a twin screw extruder capable of continuous processing increased the solid loading to 50% in [EMIM]Ac and its co-solvent DMSO. The water-soluble fraction was increased by increasing the [EMIM]Ac amount in co-solvent and the extrusion temperature but decreasing the screw rotating speed and solid loading. The surface morphologies of the extruded product showed remarkable disruption of the cell wall structures and fibrillation with increasing amounts of [EMIM]Ac in co-solvent. With increasing [EMIM]Ac amount in co-solvent and extrusion temperature and with decreasing screw rotating speed and solid loading, the crystalline structure of cellulose was more disrupted, resulting in the increase in saccharification yield. The highest yield of glucose and xylose was 99.0% and 99.5%, respectively, from the pretreated products using only [EMIM]Ac under solid loading of 15% at 160 °C extrusion temperature and 5 rpm screw rotating speed. The initial saccharification rate was faster in the pretreated product precipitated in alcohol and acetone than in water.

Abstract:In the present study, Eucalyptus was subjected to organosolv pretreatment processes with aqueous 2-propanol at 200–220°C to obtain lignin with benign characters for its valorization and digestible substrates for bioethanol production. Results showed that different delignification ratios (64.00%–81.26%) and molecular weights (Mw=610–2680g/mol) of lignin fractions were dissociated from various pretreatment conditions, and the glucose yields of all the pretreated substrates significantly increased to 54.65–88.59% as compared to that of raw material (9.20%). Additionally, the amounts of β-O-4, β-β, and β-5 substructures were regularly decreased with the increased temperature and time. By contrast, the structural characteristics of the lignin fractions obtained with 70% 2-PrOH/water were less-altered than those with 50% 2-PrOH/water pretreatment. Remarkably, lignin with the lowest molecular weight (Mw=610g/mol) and less-altered chemical structure was achieved at 200°C for 120min, which is beneficial to subsequent catalytic degradation of lignin.

Abstract:One bath with high efficient desizing enzymes is used to desize the PLA/Richcel/bamboo fiber blended fabric.The dosage of desizing enzymes,hydrogen peroxide and scouring agent,pH value,the holding temperature and time are respectively studied by using the breaking strength,the whiteness and the weight loss rate as a proof and then the appropriate ranges are got.These factors are further confirmed through L_16(45) orthogonal experiment and the optimum technological parameters are gained.The result shows that one bath with high efficient desizing enzymes pretreatment process can fulfil the following manufacture requests and favor the cleaner production.
Response Surface Methodology For Optimisation Of Soluble Dietary Fibre Extraction From Sweet Potato Residue Modified By Steam Explosion

Abstract:To make better use of sweet potato residue (SPR), a new pretreatment method, steam explosion (SE), can increase its content of soluble dietary fibre (SDF). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to determine the SE variables for optimum SDF yield. The optimal conditions were a steam pressure of 0.35 MPa, a residence time of 121 s and a sieving mesh size 60. Under the optimised conditions, the content of SDF from SPR reached 22.59 +/- 0.35%, an increase of 18.78% compared with that (3.81 +/- 0.62%) from untreated SPR. The water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity (OHC) and swelling capacity of SDF were improved by SE. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) images demonstrated that SDF had become poriferous, loose and dilatants after SE treatment. This technology provides an efficient process for increasing the industrial production of SDF from SPR.

Improvement of soluble dietary fiber quality in Tremella fuciformis stem by steam explosion technology: An evaluation of structure and function

Abstract:Edible fungi by-products are rich in dietary fiber (DF). In this study, we used steam explosion (SE) to modify Tremella fuciformis (T. fuciformis) stem DF. The SE conditions were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), and the soluble dietary fiber (SDF) extraction rate increased 1.42-fold (from 23.33 ± 0.42 % to 33.21 ± 0.28 %) under optimized conditions. SE destroyed the dense structure of SDF, which improved the specific surface area and thermal stability. Furthermore, the structural changes induced by SE resulted in improved functional properties, and SDF had better hydration properties (water holding capacity, oil holding capacity, and swelling capacity increased by 1.23, 1.59, and 1.24 times, respectively) and hypoglycemic capacity (glucose adsorption capacity increased 1.84-fold at 100 mmol/L glucose). Therefore, SE is an excellent modification method for improving quality of edible fungi processing by-products SDF.
Yield and Physicochemical Properties of Soluble Dietary Fiber Extracted from Untreated and Steam Explosion-Treated Black Soybean Hull

Abstract:Black soybean hull was subjected to steam explosion (SE) treatment under different conditions to improve the yield and properties of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) extract. Optimal conditions for SE treatment were found to be moisture content of 15%, pressure level of 1.0 MPa, and treatment time of 80 s. Under these conditions, the yield of SDF increased from 10.20% to 17.49%. In addition, structural and functional properties of SDF from untreated and SE-treated black soybean hull were investigated. Soluble dietary fiber extracted from SE-treated hull exhibited lower molecular weight and improved functional properties, such as cholesterol-binding capacity, when compared to SDF extracted from untreated soybean hull. In addition, SDF extracted from SE-treated black soybean hull showed a rough surface structure, while a smooth surface structure was found for SDF extracted from the untreated hull. The obtained results indicate that SE treatment can be successfully used to enhance the yield and the property of yolk cholesterol absorption of SDF adsorption of yolk cholesterol functional properties of SDF from black soybean hull.

Abstract:A two-step method involving continuous screw-extrusion steam explosion (CSESE) pretreatment and esterification in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is used to prepare long-chain fatty acid-modified jute fiber. The weight gain percentage (WG %) of CSESE-pretreated jute laurate (JL) was 110.7% when esterification was carried out in scCO2 at 14 MPa and 100 °C for 2 h. The corresponding WG % was 105.5% when esterification was instead carried out in pyridine at 100 °C for 2 h. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction indicated that CSESE pretreatment enhanced the reactivity of jute fiber, with esterification in scCO2 simultaneously occurring on the fibers surface and internal walls. The glass transition temperature of esterified jute was approximately 119 °C, indicating that it could be hot processed over a wide temperature range. The esterified jute had an oil absorption ratio of 17.01 g/g, so it can be used as an oil absorption material.

Efficient binary diol-based deep eutectic solvent pretreatment for enhancing enzymatic saccharification and lignin fractionation from eucalyptus

Abstract:An innovative binary biol-based deep eutectic solvent (DES), specifically ethylamine hydrochloride-ethylene glycol (EaCl-EG), was developed for efficient pretreatment of eucalyptus biomass. This DES exhibited superior performance in achieving high delignification (85.0%) and xylan removal (80.0%), while preserving a significant amount of cellulose (94.5%) compared to choline chloride-based DES. Notably, the pretreated eucalyptus residues showed a remarkable glucose yield of over 92.5%, representing a substantial enhancement of up to 15 times compared to untreated eucalyptus. Furthermore, the pretreated liquor yielded high-purity lignin with a yield of 97.8%, characterized by well-preserved β-O-4 structure and nanoscale dimensions. These lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were subsequently self-assembled into lignin nanobottles (LNBs), adding further value to the pretreatment process. The proposed novel binary EaCl-EG DES presented great potential as an efficient pretreatment solvent for future biomass fractionation processes.
Effects of steam explosion on physicochemical, functional and structural properties of soluble dietary fiber from pomelo peel

Abstract:The effects of steam explosion (SE) on the physicochemical, functional and structural characteristics of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) extracted from pomelo peel were evaluated. At the treatment condition of 0.9 MPa,120 s, the extraction yield of SDF increased by 156.7 %, and the water holding capacity, oil holding capacity, and swelling capacity increased by 36.6 %, 42.7 %, and 21.4 %, respectively. Additionally, in vitro hypoglycemic capacity, cation exchange capacity, nitrite ion adsorption capacity, and antioxidant capacity were all improved. It was observed that a large number of cracks in the SDF, and the structure of SDF became loose and porous and specific surface area of SDF increased to 1.41 times. In addition, the results from differential scanning calorimetry indicated that SDF treated with SE had better thermal stability, and the degradation temperature increased from 311.93 °C to 316.28 °C. So, SE could be used as an effective method for modifying dietary fiber.

Abstract:Pretreatment facilitates cost-effective operations on lignocellulosic biomass ranging from densification to deconstruction and bioproduct development. However, determining molecular-level mechanisms behind pretreatment and their effects has remained elusive. Here, we combine computational simulation and experiment to investigate the effects on wheat straw agricultural residue densification of an emerging pretreatment solvent, namely, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride (ChCl) and oxalic acid (OA). Ab initio molecular dynamics indicates that dissociation of lignin from cellulose in lignin-carbohydrate complexes, which does not occur to a significant extent in aqueous solution, is favorable in the DES and occurs via cleavage of the guaiacyl:xylose ether bond linkage by OA. The ensuing hemicellulose removal exposes lignin to the DES which, molecular dynamics simulation indicates, leads to lignin expansion. The resulting changes in wheat straw fiber structure, lignin distribution, and functional group modifications upon DES treatment by scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy along with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The molecular expansion of lignin enhances inter-particle binding in wheat straw, leading to denser structures under pelletization. The resulting high mechanical stability and combustion properties make the wheat straw a suitable precursor of high-quality densified solids (e.g., solid biofuel). Overall, we shed light on the molecular-level mechanisms involved in DES pretreatment for biomass densification, demonstrated here in the development of a solid biofuel. The approach here illuminates the rational design from first chemical principles of methods to convert lignocellulosic resources into advanced materials.

Abstract:Steam explosion (SE) was a friendly environmentally pretreatment method. In this study, the effect of steam explosion (SE) pretreatment on structure and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of Ampelopsis grossedentata polysaccharides was evaluated. Two novel polysaccharides (AGP and AGP-SE) were extracted, isolated, purified and analyzed by NMR, FT-IR and methylation. The results indicated that AGP mainly consisted of Rha, Xyl, Glc, and Ara with a molecular weight of 2.74 × 103 kDa and AGP-SE mainly consisted of Man, Ara, and Gal with a molecular weight of 2.14 × 103 kDa. Furthermore, the backbone of AGP and AGP-SE were mainly composed of 5)-Araf-(1→, -Glcp-(1→, 6)-Glcp-(1→, 6)-Galp-(1→, 3,6)-Manp-(1→, and 2,3,6)-Glcp-(1→. Finally, we demonstrated that all polysaccharides exhibited obviously α-glucosidase inhibition activity and mixed type inhibition. AGP-SE had better α-glucosidase inhibition activity and the binding affinity KD on α-glucosidase by using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) than AGP. Overall, SE pretreatment is an effective method for extracting polysaccharide and provides a new idea into the improvement of biological activity.

Abstract:DESs are promising green solvents in lignocellulose pretreatment. In this work, four choline chloride based DESs were synthesized and their physicochemical properties were evaluated. Herbaceous lignocellulose (wheat straw, sorghum straw) and woody lignocellulose biomass (poplar wood, pine wood) were selected as pretreated substrates. In order to reveal the mechanism that pretreatment can improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis, the pretreated lignocellulose and lignin were analyzed. SEM, FT-IR and XRD characterization revealed the microstructural changes of pretreated lignocellulose, including the increase of surface roughness and pore erosion, changes of polysaccharide/lignin chemical groups, the increase of CrI. The efficient delignification increased the accessibility of enzyme to cellulose, the lignin content negatively affected enzymatic hydrolysis conversion. Furthermore, GPC analysis showed that the polydispersity of sulfonated lignin was reduced after pretreatment, lignin had more homogeneous molecular structures. The degree of unsaturation was calculated according to the elemental composition of sorghum straw and lignin. The unsaturation of pretreated sorghum straw decreased, that may be due to the removal of partial lignin. The elemental composition of acid insoluble lignin (separated from sorghum straw) reflects the increase of unsaturation of lignin after pretreatment.
