Cooling an Optically Trapped Ultracold Fermi Gas by Periodical Driving

Abstract:We present a cooling method for a cold Fermi gas by parametrically driving atomic motions in a crossed-beam optical dipole trap (ODT). Our method employs the anharmonicity of the ODT, in which the hotter atoms at the edge of the trap feel the anharmonic components of the trapping potential, while the colder atoms in the center of the trap feel the harmonic one. By modulating the trap depth with frequencies that are resonant with the anharmonic components, we selectively excite the hotter atoms out of the trap while keeping the colder atoms in the trap, generating parametric cooling. This experimental protocol starts with a magneto-optical trap (MOT) that is loaded by a Zeeman slower. The precooled atoms in the MOT are then transferred to an ODT, and a bias magnetic field is applied to create an interacting Fermi gas. We then lower the trapping potential to prepare a cold Fermi gas near the degenerate temperature. After that, we sweep the magnetic field to the noninteracting regime of the Fermi gas, in which the parametric cooling can be manifested by modulating the intensity of the optical trapping beams. We find that the parametric cooling effect strongly depends on the modulation frequencies and amplitudes. With the optimized frequency and amplitude, we measure the dependence of the cloud energy on the modulation time. We observe that the cloud energy is changed in an anisotropic way, where the energy of the axial direction is significantly reduced by parametric driving. The cooling effect is limited to the axial direction because the dominant anharmonicity of the crossed-beam ODT is along the axial direction. Finally, we propose to extend this protocol for the trapping potentials of large anharmonicity in all directions, which provides a promising scheme for cooling quantum gases using external driving.

Abstract:This paper observes the parametric excitation on atom chip by measuring the trap loss when applying a parametric modulation.By modulating the current in chip wires,it modulates not only the trap frequency but also the trap position.It shows that the strongest resonance occurs when the modulation frequency equals to the trap frequency.The resonance amplitude increases exponentially with modulation depth.Because the Z-trap is an anharmonic trap,there exists energy selective excitation which would cause parametric cooling.We confirm this effect by observing the temperature of atom cloud dropping.
Optical cooling and trapping of highly magnetic atoms : the benefits of a spontaneous spin polarization

Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.
Cooling a strongly-interacting quantum gas by interaction modulation

Abstract:We present a cooling method for a strongly-interacting trapped quantum gas. By applying a magnetic field modulation with frequencies close to the binding energy of a molecular bound state we selectively remove dimers with high kinetic energy from the sample. We demonstrate cooling of the sample over a wide range of interaction strengths and measure a high cooling efficiency of $\gamma=4$ that exceeds all previous cooling near Feshbach resonances.

Abstract:We report a setup for the deep cooling of atoms in an optical trap. The deep cooling is implemented by eliminating the influence of gravity using specially constructed magnetic coils. Compared to the conventional method of generating a magnetic levitating force, the lower trap frequency achieved in our setup provides a lower limit of temperature and more freedoms to Bose gases with a simpler solution. A final temperature as low as ∼6nK is achieved in the optical trap, and the atomic density is decreased by nearly two orders of magnitude during the second stage of evaporative cooling. This deep cooling of optically trapped atoms holds promise for many applications, such as atomic interferometers, atomic gyroscopes, and magnetometers, as well as many basic scientific research directions, such as quantum simulations and atom optics.

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of a novel scheme for optical cooling of particles that does not in principle require a closed optical transition. A tightly confined laser beam interacting with a trapped particle experiences a phase shift, which upon reflection from a mirror or resonant microstructure produces a time-delayed optical potential for the particle. This leads to a nonconservative force and friction. A quantum model of the system is presented and analyzed in the semiclassical limit.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple scheme to achieve fast, accelerating (runaway) evaporative cooling of optically trapped atoms by tilting the optical potential with a magnetic field gradient. Runaway evaporation is possible in this trap geometry due to the weak dependence of vibration frequencies on trap depth, which preserves atomic density during the evaporation process. Using this scheme, we show that Bose-Einstein condensation with similar to 10(5) cesium atoms can be realized in 2-4 s of forced evaporation. The evaporation speed and energetics are consistent with the three-dimensional evaporation picture, despite the fact that atoms can only leave the trap in the direction of tilt.

Abstract:The collective Raman cooling of a trapped two-component Fermi gas is analyzed. We develop the quantum master equation that describes the collisions and the laser cooling, in the festina lente regime, where the heating due to photon reabsorption can be neglected. The numerical results based on Monte Carlo simulations show, that three-dimensional temperatures of the order of 0.008 T_F can be achieved. We analyze the heating related to the background losses, and conclude that our laser-cooling scheme can maintain the temperature of the gas without significant additional losses. Finally we derive an analytic expression for the temperature of a trapped Fermi gas heated by background collisions, that agrees very well with the data obtained from the numerical simulation.

Abstract:We propose an efficient mechanism for the evaporative cooling of trapped fermions directly into quantum degeneracy. Our idea is based on an electric field induced elastic interaction between trapped atoms in spin symmetric states. We discuss some novel general features of fermionic evaporative cooling and present numerical studies demonstrating the feasibility for the cooling of alkali metal fermionic species $^6$Li, $^{40}$K, and $^{82,84,86}$Rb. We also discuss the sympathetic cooling of fermionic hyperfine spin mixtures, including the effects of anisotropic interactions.

Abstract:A method is proposed to cool down atoms in a harmonic trap without phase-space compression as in a perfectly slow adiabatic expansion, i.e., keeping the populations of the instantaneous initial and final levels invariant, but in a much shorter time. This may require that the harmonic trap becomes an expulsive parabolic potential in some time interval. The cooling times achieved are also shorter than previous minimal times using optimal-control bang-bang methods and real frequencies.

Abstract:Evaporative cooling stands as the prevailing method for achieving ultracold temperatures in atomic systems. Current schemes of evaporation selectively remove the hotter atoms near the edge of the trap, as the hotter and colder atoms are distributed in different spatial regions of the trapping potential. However, a long-standing goal is to directly remove the higher momentum atoms, irrespective of their spatial distribution. For this purpose, we demonstrate collisional cooling for a 6 Li Fermi gas through inelastic three-body recombination near a narrow Feshbach resonance. Such three-body recombination can induce either heating or cooling effects, and the decay of the quasi-bound Feshbach molecule stirs the hotter atoms away from the trapping potential. When the threshold energy of the Feshbach molecule exceeds the atom's average kinetic energy of 3/2 k B T , the cooling effect becomes more pronounced. Finally, we observe strong temperature dependence in this collisional cooling process, with greater efficiency achieved at lower temperatures.

Optimizing the efficiency of evaporative cooling in optical dipole traps

Abstract:We present a combined computational and experimental study to optimize the efficiency of evaporative cooling for atoms in optical dipole traps. By employing a kinetic model of evaporation, we provide a strategy for determining the optimal relation between atom temperature, trap depth, and average trap frequency during evaporation given experimental initial conditions. We then experimentally implement a highly efficient evaporation process in an optical dipole trap, showing excellent agreement between the theory and experiment. This method has allowed the creation of pure Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{87}$Rb with 2$\times 10^4$ atoms starting from only $5\times 10^5$ atoms initially loaded in the optical dipole trap, achieving an evaporation efficiency, $\gamma_{eff}$, of 4.0 during evaporation.

Abstract:Cooling the motion of trapped ions to near the quantum ground state is crucial for many applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. However, certain motional modes of trapped-ion crystals can be difficult to cool due to weak or zero interaction between the modes and the cooling radiation, typically laser beams. We overcome this challenge by coupling a mode that interacts weakly with cooling radiation to one that interacts strongly with cooling radiation using parametric modulation of the trapping potential, thereby enabling indirect cooling of the weakly interacting mode. In this way, we demonstrate near-ground-state cooling of motional modes with weak or zero cooling radiation interaction in multi-ion crystals of the same and mixed ion species, specifically Be+9-Be+9, Be+9-Mg+25, and Be+9-Mg+25-Be+9 crystals. This approach can be generally applied to any Coulomb crystal where certain motional modes cannot be directly cooled efficiently, including crystals containing molecular ions, highly charged ions, charged fundamental particles, or charged macroscopic objects.

Abstract:Different from atoms, molecules have unique properties, and play an important role in the research of atomic, molecular and optical physics. Cold molecules have important applications in science and have been studied for more than 20 years. But traditional methods, such as the Stark decelerator, have hit a bottleneck: it is hard to increase the phase space density of molecules. Extending the direct laser-cooling technique to new molecular species has recently been a hot topic and also a big challenge. In this review paper, on one hand, we make a brief review to recent progresses on the direct laser cooling of polar molecules. On the other hand, a demonstration on the feasibility of laser cooling BaF molecule has been experimentally illustrated, including the analysis on the molecular energy levels, measurements of the high-resolution spectroscopy, efficient pre-cooling and state preparation via buffer-gas cooling and detailed investigations on the molcule-light interactions. All these results not only pave the way for future laser-cooling and -trapping experiments, but also serve as a reference for the laser-cooling explorations on new molecular species.

Abstract:We present an experimental and theoretical study of parametric resonance in a magneto-optical trap. The parametric resonance is achieved by the modulation of the cooling laser intensities. When the frequency of the modulation is near twice the natural frequency of the trap and the modulation amplitude exceeds a threshold value, the parametric resonance can be excited; i.e., the trapped atoms are divided into two parts and oscillate in opposite directions. The amplitude and the phase with respect to the intensity modulation are measured by varying the modulation frequency or the amplitude, and compared with the theoretical calculations based on simple Doppler cooling theory. We also measured the widths of the oscillating clouds and the results are compared with the Monte-Carlo simulations. The experimental results are in good agreement with the calculation or the simulation results.
A Generalized Theory for Optical Cooling of a Trapped Atom with Spin

Abstract:Cooling atoms to the ground-state of optical tweezers is becoming increasingly important for high-fidelity imaging, cooling, and molecular assembly. While extensive theoretical work has been conducted on cooling in free space, fewer studies have focused on cooling in bound states. In this work, we present a unified formalism for optical cooling mechanisms in neutral atom tweezers, including resolved and unresolved sideband cooling with different trapping potentials, polarization gradient cooling, gray molasses cooling, $\Lambda$-enhanced gray molasses cooling, and Raman sideband cooling. We perform simulations and demonstrate good agreement with a simplified spin model. We derive and discuss the fundamental limits of each cooling mechanism and propose new strategies for achieving ground-state cooling in optical tweezers. Our findings provide valuable insights into optimizing cooling schemes for neutral atoms in optical tweezers, paving the way for minimizing thermal decoherence in Rydberg and molecular gates and improving efficiencies of molecular assembly.

Sub-Doppler Cooling of Neutral Atoms in a Grating Magneto-Optical Trap

Abstract:The grating magneto-optical trap (GMOT) requires only one beam and three planar diffraction gratings to form a cloud of cold atoms above the plane of the diffractors. Despite the complicated polarization arrangement, we demonstrate sub-Doppler cooling of 87Rb atoms to a temperature of 7.6(0.6) uK through a multi-stage, far-detuned GMOT in conjunction with optical molasses. A decomposition of the electric field into polarization components for this geometry does not yield a mapping onto standard sub-Doppler laser-cooling configurations. With numerical simulations, we find that the polarization composition of the GMOT optical field, which includes sigma- and pi-polarized light, does produce sub-Doppler temperatures.
