Abstract:By reacting an asymmetric semi-rigid V-shaped linker H(3)dpob (H(3)dpob = 3-(2'3'-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzoic acid) and Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O, nine novel Ln-based luminescent materials, from 1D to 3D, namely {[Eu.dpob).phen)]center dot H2O}(n) (1), {[Ln(Hdpob)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (Ln = Eu(2), Sm(3), Gd(4), Tb(5)), {[Eu(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O}(n) (6), and {[Ln(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot mH(2)O} n (Ln = Eu(7), Gd(8), Tb(9), m = 0.5 for 7 and 9; m = 1 for 8) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; H(2)ox = oxalic acid) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and PXRD. The crystal structures of 1-9 indicate that the coordination modes and coordination configuration of the H(3)dpob ligand play critical roles in the formation of the lanthanide architectures. Complexes 1-5 display multiple structures from double-stranded 1D chains to 4-connected 2D layers, through [Eu-2(CO2)(4)] or [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] dinuclear units with different auxiliary ligands. Complexes 6 and 7 are genuine supramolecular isomers which are induced by the concentration effect. 6 possesses a 2D kgd network with a Schlafli symbol of (4(3))(2)(4(6).6(6).8(3)) built from 6-connected [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] units and 3-connected H(3)dpob, which further connects to a (3,8)-connected tfz-d topology through O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. 7 displays a 3D (3,6)-connected rtl network with the Schlafli symbol (4.6(2))(2)(4(2).6(10).8(3)). Eu complexes 1, 2, 6, and 7 as well as Tb complexes 5 and 9 could provide intense and bright characteristic D-5(0) -> F-7(J)/D-5(4) -> F-7(J) red/green luminescence under UV excitation in the solid state at 298 K and 77 K. The calculated singlet and triplet energies of H(3)dpob as well as phen and H(2)ox ligands indicate that these ligands act as antenna chromophores that are able to efficiently absorb and transfer energy to Ln(III) ions. In complexes 1, 2 and 5, ligand-to-metal energy transfer processes could occur in mixed ligands. However, these processes occurred in a single H3dpob ligand in complexes 6 and 7. With careful adjustment of the relative concentration of the lanthanide ions and by varying the excitation wavelengths of {[Gd0.92Eu0.04Tb0.04(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O} n (10), tunable yellow (CIE coordinate: 0.51, 0.40) to white-light (CIE coordinate: 0.33, 0.34) emission has been obtained.
Synthesis, Structure and Photoluminescence Properties of Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze-Type Eu3+-doped K2LaNb5O15 Niobate Phosphor

Abstract:A series of red-emitting Eu3+-doped K2LaNb5O15 niobate phosphors with tetragonal tungsten bronze-type structure were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The structure of new tungsten bronze-type K2EuNb5O15 was identified by Rietveld refinements to crystallize in the tetragonal space group P4bm, which is isostructural to K2LaNb5O15. The relative intensity of the emission from both 5D0→7F2 and 5D0→7F1 increases with increasing Eu3+ ion concentration. The quenching mechanism of the K2La1−xNb5O15:xEu system was investigated in detail. The relationship between Photoluminescence properties and the TTB-type structure was discussed. The quantum efficiency of K2EuNb5O15 excited under near-UV light (399nm) is 132% of that of commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ (394nm). The results demonstrated K2EuNb5O15 phosphor as a potential candidate for white light emitting diode pumped by near-UV or blue chip.
2D Lanthanide MOFs Driven by a Rigid 3,5-Bis(3-carboxy-phenyl)pyridine Building Block: Solvothermal Syntheses, Structural Features, and Photoluminescence and Sensing Properties

Abstract:A new series of five lanthanide(III) metal-organic frameworks with a general formula of [Ln(3)(bcpb)(4)(mu-HCOO)( mu-H2O)(H2O)(2)(DEF)](n) (1-5) was generated by solvothermal reactions from Ln(NO3)(3).6H(2)O {Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3), Dy (4), and Sm (5)} and 3,5-bis(3-carboxyphenyl) pyridine (H(2)bcpb) in an aqueous N, N-diethylformamide (DEF) medium. The obtained products were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The latter reveals that all compounds (1-5) are isostructural and feature very intricate 2D metal-organic frameworks. These were topologically analyzed, revealing a very complex hexanodal underlying net that can be simplified further to a binodal 3,5-connected layer with the 3,5L52 topology. Solid-state photoluminescence properties of 1-5 were studied in detail. Compound 1 exhibits a strong red luminescence upon excitation at 338 nm and its lifetime is 532 mu s. Compound 2 shows an intense green luminescence upon excitation at 336 and its lifetime is 981 mu s. The triplet state ((3)pi pi*) of bcpb(2-) studied by using the Gd(III) derivative 3 demonstrated that the ligand effectively populates Tb(III) emission (Phi = 70.96%), whereas the corresponding Eu(III) derivative 1 shows a weak luminescence efficiency (Phi = 15.81%) as the triplet state of bcpb(2-) has a poor match with the D-5(0) energy level of Eu(III). A notable feature of 1 is its remarkable sensing ability for Cu2+ ions and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). Besides, a series of heterobimetallic Tb-based MOFs, [Tb3(1-x)Eu3x(bcpb)(4)(mu-HCOO)(mu-H2O)(H2O)(2)(DEF)](n) {x = 0.001, 0.002, 0.003, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20} (compounds 2a-2j, respectively), was prepared. The luminescence studies reveal that the simultaneous presence of the characteristic sharp emission bands of Eu3+ and Tb3+ allows the tuning of the photoluminescence colors of such materials by adjusting the doping concentration of the Eu3+ ions.
Antiphotobleaching: A Type of Structurally Rigid Chromophore Ready for Constructing Highly Luminescent and Highly Photostable Europium Complexes

Abstract:Antiphotobleaching is a critical challenge in the field of luminescent lanthanide complexes (LLCs) as well as in many disciplines concerning organic luminescent processes. In this work, a type of structurally rigid organic ligand, 4‐hydroxy‐1,5‐naphthyridine (ND), is developed, which can not only efficiently sensitize the europium emission but also demonstrate unique photostability. A series of ND derivatives with different substituent groups are synthesized and their singlet and triplet excited state energy levels are systematically investigated. Photophysical characterizations of the corresponding europium complexes reveal that the sensitization efficiencies (ηsens) are close to 100% and the total photoluminescence quantum yields can reach up to 84%. Most importantly, these structurally rigid luminescent europium complexes exhibit outstanding photostability and thermostability. Unlike the widely used β‐diketone complexes that are easily photodegraded, ND‐based chelates show no obvious degradation during the UV aging test (10 W m−2 340 nm Ultraviolet A irradiation) within 200 h. Such superior UV resistance is even better than that of the famous compound tris(8‐hydroxyquinolate)aluminum (Alq3). Possible reasons are discussed and a general rule for designing photostable LLCs is proposed. Such a chromophore is very promising for introducing luminescent materials with good photostability in potential application in many disciplines.
Crystal Structure and Eu3+/Tb3+ Doped Luminescent Properties of a New Borate Ba3BiB9O18

Abstract:Undoped and doped either by Eu{sup 3+} or Tb{sup 3+} bismuth borate Ba{sub 3}BiB{sub 9}O{sub 18} was structurally characterized and analyzed by fluorescence spectroscopy. Belonging to synthetic borate member of the family Ba{sub 3}XB{sub 9}O{sub 18}, layers of planar triangular B{sub 3}O{sub 6} groups connecting with deformed BaO{sub 6} hexagons are interleaved by 9-coordinate Ba atoms, and 6-coordinate Bi atoms. Its crystal structure was determined and refined from powder X-ray diffraction data by the Rietveld method and the results showed that Ba{sub 3}BiB{sub 9}O{sub 18} belongs to space group P6{sub 3}/m with unit cell dimensions of a = 7.1999(2) A, c = 17.3567(6) A, and z = 2. Curves of differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis showed that Ba{sub 3}BiB{sub 9}O{sub 18} is a congruent melting compound and chemically stable above 728 {sup o}C. Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 1-x}Eu{sub x}B{sub 9}O{sub 18} and Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 1-x}Tb{sub x}B{sub 9}O{sub 18} form a continuous solid solution from x = 0.01 to x = 0.9. The ultraviolet excited photoluminescence intensity increased with both Eu{sup 3+} and Tb{sup 3+} concentration in the matrix of Ba{sub 3}BiB{sub 9}O{sub 18}. Abstract:Dinuclear lanthanide complexes of the general for Ln2(TTA)4(PAN)2 (Ln=Eu, Gd, Tb, Yb; TTA and monodeprotonated thenoyltrifluoroacetone and PAN 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol, respectively) were prepared and structurally characterized. These novel complexes, representing the first examples of crystallographically characterized lanthanide–PAN complexes, each feature a dinuclear core with the metal atoms bridged by the phenolato O atoms of the chelating-bridging PAN ligands. Electronic spectroscopic and photoluminescence studies were carried out for the Eu(III) complex, and the results are consistent with ligand-mediated energy transfer and ligand-sensitized luminescence characteristic of Eu(III). The Eu(III) complex doped into a polymeric film was shown to effectively limit a nanosecond 523-nm laser pulse, and the limiting effect is rationalized in terms of reverse saturable absorption due to the strong absorption of the metal’s excited triplet states that are populated by intersystem crossing.

Abstract:A new europium (III) complex Eu(HFNH)(3)Phen (HFNH: 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6-heptafluoro-1-(2-naphthyl) hexane-1,3-dione; phen: 1, 10-phenanthroline) was synthesized and its triboltuninescent phenomenon was observed. Photoluminescence and triboluminescence spectra were successfully determined. The most intense triboluminescent emission originates front the transition of the, central Eu3+ ion from D-5(0) level to F-7(2) level. The triboluminescent spectrum is basically similar to that of photoluminescence, which correlates with the disorders of F atoms.

Abstract:Inorganic-organic hybrid nanoparticles formed by lanthanide-doped nanostructures and organic ligands have been intensively studied, which could greatly increase their photoluminescence performance as a result of the energy transfer process from organic ligands to Ln3+ ions. However, the photoluminescence intensity and excitation spectral width are still quite limited on coordinating with a single type of organic ligand. In this work, Eu3+ -doped LaF3 (LaF3 :Eu3+ ) nanoparticles were prepared using a hydrothermal method, and were then hybridized with benzoic acid and thenoyltrifluoroacetone to form the hybrid nanostructures. After that, the hybrid nanostructures were mixed with 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile and methyl methacrylate to prepare the composites. The sample obtained by hybridization and composite doping with 5% Eu3+ exhibited the best photoluminescence performance. The excitation peak width and luminescence intensity of the hybrid nanostructures were significantly increased. The excitation spectral width of the inorganic-organic mixed hybrid nanostructures was particularly enhanced, and covered the whole ultraviolet band region of solar light on Earth. The prepared composites exhibited good optical properties.

Abstract:Four new polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of nicotinic acid N-oxide and isonicotinic acid N-oxide have been synthesized and structurally determined. In the isomorphous compounds [(Ln(L-1)(3) (H2O)(2))(n)]. 4nH(2)O(HL1 = nicotinic acid N-oxide; Ln = Eu, 1; Ln = Er, 2) the lanthanide(III) ions form infinite double chains along the b direction through the coordination of bridging carboxylate and N-oxide groups. The chains are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and uncoordinated N-oxide groups and between aqua ligands and lattice water molecules, to form a three-dimensional network. [(Eu(L-2)(2)-(H2O)(4))(n)](NO3)(n). nH(2)O (HL2 = isonicotinic acid N-oxide, 3) has a polymeric structure in which the europium (III) ions are connected into infinite chains by pairs of syn-syn carboxylate groups. Adjacent chains are interlinked by hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups to form a layer parallel to the (100) plane, and such layers are connected by hydrogen bonds between nitrate anions and aqua ligands, and between oxide groups and lattice water molecules, into a three-dimensional network. In [(Er-2(L-2)(4)(H2O)(10))](NO3)(2). H2O, 4, dinuclear units are inter-linked into a three-dimensional network through hydrogen bonding between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups of both bidentate bridging and unidentate L-2 ligands. Factors affecting the formation of coordination chains and dinuclear units are discussed. Luminescence properties of 1 and 3 have also been studied. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Abstract:Fourteen lanthanide (Ln)-containing hetero selenato-phosphato-peroxopolyoxoniobates in three series: (1) Cs2{[Ln(H2O)4][H4P2Se2Nb6(O2)6O22]}2·nH2O [Ln = Ce (I-Ce), Pr (I-Pr), Sm (I-Sm), Eu (I-Eu), Gd (I-Gd); I-Ce, I-Pr, I-Eu, I-Gd n = 12; I-Sm n = 16]; (2) Cs2K3{[Ln(H2O)6][H2.5P2Se2Nb6(O2)6O22]}2·nH2O [Ln = Dy (II-Dy), Tm (II-Tm), Yb (II-Yb), Lu (II-Lu); II-Dy n = 14; II-Tm n = 24; II-Yb, II-Lu n = 13]; (3) Cs5K2Hm{[Ln(H2O)6][P2Se2Nb6(O2)6O22]}2{[Lnx(H2O)y]2[P2Se2Nb6(O2)6O22]}·nH2O [Ln = Ho (III-Ho), Er (III-Er), Tm (III-Tm), Yb (III-Yb), Lu (III-Lu), III-Ho-III-Yb m = 5, x = 1; y = 5; III-Lu m = 6.5; x = 0.75; y = 4; III-Ho-III-Tm n = 19, III-Yb n = 34; III-Lu n = 31], have been isolated by a one-pot reaction and structurally characterized by various physical and chemical analyses. These compounds represent the first group of Ln-functionalized polyoxoniobates with mixed heteroatoms. In addition, the photoluminescence properties of compounds I-Sm, I-Eu, and II-Dy were measured, and the time-resolved emission spectra showed that the {P2Se2Nb6} segment contributed to the energy transfer from the polyoxoniobate units to the Ln3+ center, which effectively promoted the emission of the Ln3+ center.

Abstract:In this paper, the lamellar fluorphlogopite was structurally modified by the adjustment of layer charge and the rare earth Eu3+ was doped to fluorphlogopite with a subsequent high temperature solid state reaction process. The structural modification involved a preliminary treatment of fluorphlogopite with HNO3 and oxalic acid to reduce the layer charge density, and part of the charge-reduced fluorphlogopite was converted to a homoionic Na form by ion exchange with NaCl or NaB(C6H5)(4). It has been noticed that the interlayer spacing of modified fluorphlogopite is decreased as compared with the original fluorphlogopite due to the ionic radius difference between K+ and Na+. The photoluminescence study suggests that adjustment of layer charge of fluorphlogopite is beneficial to enhance the luminescence intensity excited with near UV light, and the layered system may be a potential red light component for the use of solid-state lighting and other optoelectronic fields. A computer study and photoelectric property analysis of potassium-doped lithium niobate single crystals

Abstract:First-principles theory was used to design a potassium-doped lithium niobate single crystal. The structural, electronic, optical and ferroelectric properties of the potassium-doped LiNbO3 single crystal model have been investigated using a generalized gradient approximation within density functional theory. It was found that substitution with potassium drastically changed the optical and electronic nature of the crystal and that the band gap slightly decreases. A series of LiNbO3 single crystals doped with x mol% K (x = 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 mol%) were successfully grown using the Czochralski method. The crystals were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, UV-vis-infrared absorption spectroscopy and a ferroelectric property test. The experimental test results were consistent with the calculated predictions.

Abstract:Three new complexes Na[Ln(pic)4]ּ⋅2.5H2O (Ln = Tb, Eu or Gd; pic = picolinate) were synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses. The molecular structures of the complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In each of the complexes, the picolinate ligands are bonded to Ln3+ and Na+ ions by different coordination modes promoting polymeric structures. The photoluminescent properties of complexes were studied and combined with theoretical studies using the density functional theory (DFT: B3LYP, PBE1PBE) and the semiempirical method AM1/Sparkle from the single crystal X-ray diffraction structures to assign a suitable model for describing the system. The B3LYP DFT functional was considered the most adequate for providing structural properties of the compounds and for describing luminescence properties. The excited triplet states (T1) and excited singlet states (S1) of the ligand were determined theoretically using Time-dependent DFT calculations (TD-DFT: B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP and LC-wPBE) and INDO/S-CIS, with the best agreement with experimental values obtained from the LC-wPBE DFT functional. The photoluminescent spectra of the complexes and their lifetime measurements were determined indicating that the Eu complex and Tb complex display different intramolecular energy transfer mechanisms with higher efficiency to ligand-to-terbium energy transfer. In addition, the experimental and theorical Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum yields of the complexes were also determined and discussed besides to a proposed 9-state diagram to describe the luminescence properties of the Eu complex. The low value of emission quantum efficiency of 5D0 emitting level of Eu(III) ion was explained by the presence of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer state (LMCT) evidenced experimentally and theoretically. A good agreement was obtained between the proposed kinetic model and experimental results showing the consistency of the set of rate equations assumed and the intramolecular pathways proposed.

Abstract:Lu(6)WO(12) and Lu(6)MoO(12) doped with Eu(3+) ions have been prepared by using a citrate complexation route, followed by calcination at different temperatures. The morphology, structure, and optical and photoluminescence properties of the compounds were studied as a function of calcination temperature. Both compositions undergo transitions from a cubic to a hexagonal phase when the calcination temperature increases. All the compositions have strong absorption of near-UV light and show intense red luminescence under a near-UV excitation, which is related to the transfer of energy from the host lattices to dopant Eu(3+) ions. Density functional theory calculations have also been performed. The calculation reveals that hexagonal Lu(6)WO(12) and Lu(6)MoO(12) are indirect bandgap materials, and the near-UV excitations are due to the electronic transitions from the O-2p orbitals to W-5d and Mo-4d orbitals, respectively. The lattice parameters and bandgap energies of hexagonal Lu(6)WO(12) and Lu(6)MoO(12) were determined.

Abstract:K+ ions were incorporated into Ca4.75(PO4)3Cl: 0.05Eu2+, 0.2Mn2+ Phosphors, which has a significant effect on the photoluminescence properties of phosphors. With increasing the K+ concentration (x value) in Ca4.75−xKx(PO4)3Cl: 0.05Eu2+, 0.2Mn2+ (x=0-0.15), the emission intensity of Eu2+ increases and reaches its maximum value at the x=0.1, and then decreases for the higher K+ concentrations, which can be explained by charge compensations and crystal lattice strain relaxing. The results show a potential for increasing the emission intensity of Ca4.75(PO4)3Cl: 0.05Eu2+, 0.2Mn2+ phosphors by properly doping K+ ions.
A Series of Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks with Interesting Adjustable Photoluminescence Constructed by Helical Chains.

Abstract:Based on the isonicotinic acid (HIN=pyridine-4-carboxylic acid), seven lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the formula [Ln(IN)2 L] (Ln=Eu (1), Tb (2), Er (3), Dy (4), Ho (5), Gd (6), La (7), L=OCH2 CH2 OH) have been synthesized by mixing Ln2 O3 with HIN under solvothermal conditions, and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Crystal structural analysis shows that compounds 1-6 are isostructural, crystallize in a chiral space group P21 21 21 , whereas compound 7 crystallizes in space group C2/c. Nevertheless, they all consist of new intertwined chains. Simultaneously, on the basis of the above-mentioned compounds, we have realized a rational design strategy to form the doped Ln MOFs [(Eux Tb1-x )(IN)2 L] (x=0.35 (8), x=0.19 (9), x=0.06 (10)) by utilizing Tb(III) as the second "rare-earth metal". Interestingly, the photoluminescence of [(Eux Tb1-x )(IN)2 L] are not only adjustable by the ratios of Eu/Tb, but also temperature or excitation wavelength.

Abstract:Seven lanthanide complexes [Ln(OPPh3)3(NO3)3] (1–3) (OPPh3 = triphenylphosphine oxide, Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd), [Dy(OPPh3)4(NO3)2](NO3) (4), [Ln(OPPh3)3(NO3)3]2 (5–7) (Ln = Pr, Eu, Gd) were synthesized by the reactions of different lanthanide salts and OPPh3 ligand in the air. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, IR and fluorescence spectra. Structure analysis shows that complexes 1–4 are mononuclear complexes formed by OPPh3 ligands and nitrates. The asymmetric units of complexes 5–7 consist of two crystallographic-separate molecules. Complex 1 is self-assembled to construct a 2D layer-structure of (4,4) net topology by hydrogen bond interactions. The other complexes show a 1D chain-like structure that was assembled by OPPh3 ligands and nitrate ions through C–H···O interactions. Solid emission spectra of compounds 4 and 6 are assigned to the characteristic fluorescence of Tb3+ (λem = 480, 574 nm) and Eu3+ (λem = 552, 593, 619, 668 nm).
