Abstract:In this contribution, we reported the preparation of mesoporous silica with a reactive block copolymer as the porogen via sol-gel process. Firstly, poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-block-poly(E-caprolactone)-block-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) triblock copolymer (PGMA-b-PCL-b-PGMA) was synthesized with the combination of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Thereafter, the triblock copolymer was functionalized via its reaction with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to afford a new reactive block copolymer bearing triethoxysilane moieties. The latter was employed to perform the inter-component sol-gel reactions with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to obtain the organic-inorganic composites with various compositions. The organic-inorganic composites were subsequently used as the precursors to obtain the mesoporous silica materials via pyrolysis at elevated temperatures. The surface-area Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements indicate that the materials of mesoporous silica with adjustable porosity have been successfully obtained.

Abstract:The synthesis of hollow silica spheres with mesopore wall structures via CO2-in-water emulsion templating in the presence of non-ionic PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer surfactants as mesostructure-directing templates has been investigated under various conditions. The successful synthesis of hollow spheres strongly depends on the pressure and density of CO2. The mesoporosity (pore size) and morphology of the silica hollow spheres can be controlled by varying the operating CO2 pressure. Other types of surfactants, such as long chain alkylammonium ions, may also be used to template the porosity of the shells.

Abstract:A rigid colloidal silica template was formed by self-assembly of the monodispersed silica spheres prepared according to Stöber method. The silica template is highly ordered, which was verified by bright color effect due to Bragg diffraction and the results of SEM. The free radical polymerization of styrene was allowed within the interstices of the rigid template to result in the formation of the threedimensional periodic silica/polystyrene nano-composites. The titled porous polystyrene was prepared by chemical decomposition of the template with concentrated aqueous hydrofluoric acid. Scanning electron microscopy characterization showed that the macroporous polystyrene has ordered arrays of the uniform pores replicated from the template. Moreover, it was found that the morphology of the as-synthesized macroporous polystyrene was greatly affected by the connectivity of the silica spheres treated under different conditions.

Abstract:In this work, we reported a facile preparation of mesoporous silica materials assisted by a commercial polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (PS-b-PB-b-PS) triblock copolymer. For this purpose, the PS-b-PB-b-PS triblock copolymer was first functionalized with (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane via a thiol-ene radical addition approach, and then the functionalized triblock copolymer with the midblock bearing triethoxysilane moieties was employed to perform intercomponent sol-gel reactions with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to obtain the organic-inorganic gels. The organic-inorganic gels with variable compositions were then used as precursors to obtain mesoporous silica via pyrolysis at elevated temperatures. The functionalized triblock copolymer was characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The results of SAXS, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements indicate that the mesoporous silica materials were successfully obtained and the porosity of the materials can be modulated with the mass ratios of the functionalized triblock copolymer to the precursor of silica (viz. TEOS).

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous methylsilicone monoliths were prepared by filling monodisperse polystyrene microsphere (PS) as template and subsequently removing PS in selective solvent. The hierarchical porous structure can be tailored by adjusting the reactant ratio. The textural structure were investigated by the measurement of density, SEM observation, and N2 desorption and adsorption isotherm and pore size distribution. The results showed the hierarchical porous methylsilicone materials with interconnected macropores and mesopores were lightweight and hydrophobic.

Abstract:Several well defined block copolymers PEO-b-PS and PS-b-PEO-b-PS were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using PEO-Br and Br-PEO-Br as macroinitiators. These copolymers were characterized by GPC and 1H NMR. Mesoporous silicas with large and tunable accessible pores were successfully synthesized by evaporation-induced self-assembly using block copolymers as templates. The structures of these materials were characterized by BET and TEM. When block copolymers possess similar hydrophobic block length but different block architecture, the pore size of mesoporous silica templated by triblock copolymers is larger than that templated by diblock copolymers. For diblock copolymers, with the increasing of PEO block, the mesoporous size decreases; and with the increasing of PS block, the mesoporous size increases. The increase in the degree of polymerization of the PS block leads to a loss of pore organization. When PS block reaches long enough, the product was not mesoporous silica but silica nanowire. In addition, a method of a preparation of block copolymers vesicles by EISA approach was accidentally found.

Abstract:A polystyrene-block-poly(2-hydroxyethylacrylate) diblock copolymer (PS-b-PHEA) was synthesized via a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization approach. This novel amphiphilic diblock copolymer was successfully used as the template to obtain the mesoporous silica materials. In order to modulate the porosity of mesoporous silica materials, this diblock copolymer was further functionalized via its reaction with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTES) to afford a new diblock copolymer bearing an alkyloxysilane subchain. This derivate diblock copolymer was also employed to prepare the mesoporous silica materials through the inter-component reaction between the block copolymer and silica matrix. The results of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurements showed that the inter-component reaction can be utilized to modulate the morphologies and porosity of the mesoporous silica materials.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous silica monoliths with well-defined interconnected macropores and uniform spherical mesopores were spontaneously prepared by combining polymerization-induced phase separation with an epoxide-mediated sol-gel route without any complicated aging and drying and high-temperature heat treatment. The precise control of pore structures can be realized by using propylene oxide (PO) as the gelation mediation agent, poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (P123) as the phase-separation inducer as well as the structure-directing agent and 1,3,5-trimethyl-benzene (TMB) as the micelle-swelling agent. The as-prepared silica monolith possesses an interesting hierarchically porous structure constructed by 10 nm uniform spherical mesopores confined in a macroporous framework of well-defined 1 mu m macropores, and exhibits a BET surface area as high as 848 m(2) g(-1). Heat treatment at 400-800 degrees C gradually decreases the BET surface area to 195 m(2) g(-1), while most of the uniform mesoporous structure remains intact.

Abstract:A polystyrene(PS)/nanosilica organic-inorganic hybrid material was prepared from styrene monomer and commercial aqueous silica sol containing large amounts of Si-OH by means of emulsion polymerization. The nanosilica sol was modified by the addition of the reactive coupling agent methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilsne (MPS), and the resulting latex particles were protected by surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulphonate(SDS), hydroxypropyl methyl yl cellulose(HMPC), and poly( vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). The effects of the type of surfactant, the amount of surfactant, and the coupling agent on the shape and stability of the resulting latex particles were investigated. The TEM observation indicates that among SDS, HMPC, and PVP, SDS is the best surfactant. When the content of SDS is 0.5% and the amount of MPS is 7 % in the system, the latex with obvious core-shell structure could be obtained. The average diameters of the monodispersed particles range from 182 to 278 rim, and the average number of silica beads for each composite are 1325 and 4409, respectively. The FTIR analysis shows that PS was chemically linked to silica through MPS. The thermal gravimetric analysis shows that when there is a higher silica content, the hybrid composites have a better heat resistance.

Abstract:In this paper, the bimodal pore silica monolith was synthesized through the one-step synthesis method, using the block copolymer Pluronic F127 （EO106 PO70 EO106 ） template agent, and the structure was characterized by the SAXD, SEM and Nitrogen Physisorption method. The results show that the mesoporous was formed with a certain degree of orderliness. The reaction conditions on the structure of the monolith were studied, and the sizes of the through-pore, framework and mesoporous could be regulated respectively. This kind of material with high surface area and double holes is suitable for a new kind of chromatographic separation material.

Abstract:In this paper,we reported a novel method for synthesis of non-oxide porous ceramics by using random copolymers as precursors.A silazane oligomer and styrene monomer were used as starting materials,which were copolymerized at 120 ℃ to form random polysilazane-polystyrene copolymers.The copolymers were then pyrolyzed at 500 ℃ to obtain porous ceramics by completely decomposing polystyrene（PS） and converting polysilazane（PSZ） into non-oxide Si-C-N ceramics.The obtained material contained a bi-model pore-structure consisting of both micro-sized and nano-sized pores with very high surface area of more than500 m~2/g.We also demonstrated that the pore structure and surface area of the materials can be tailored by changing the ratio of the two blocks.Current results suggest a promising simple method for making multiscaled porous non-oxide materials.

Abstract:With anilino-methyl triethoxy silane (AMTS) as an intermedium, supermicro-macroporous silica was synthesized through pi-pi interaction under ambient conditions, utilizing synthetic polypeptide-based triblock copolymer poly(L-phenylalanine)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-phenylalanine) (Phe(7)-PEG(135)-Phe(7)) as a template. The prepared silica has mesoscale short-rangeorder and hierarchical structure with both supermicropores and interconnected macropores. It is proposed that the supermicropores are templated by the polypeptide segments, while the open 3D interconnected macroporous networks are presumably attributed to both PEG segments and organic solvent. Both polypeptide-based block copolymer and AMTS play important roles in the formation of mesoscale short-range-order and hierarchical structure.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous silica KIT-6 and SBA-15 mesostructures were successfully synthesized by using a mesomorphous complex of a nonionic triblock copolymer (pluronic P123) and an anionic polyelectrolyte (polyacrylic acid) as the dynamic template. The obtained mesoporous silica materials possessed both ordered mesopores (∼7 nm) and nanopores (∼15–50 nm), and the long-range order of the mesophase was not perturbed by the embedded larger secondary nanopores. Moreover, hierarchically porous silica KIT-6 exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity in enzyme and protein immobilization, which was attributed to the hierarchically porous structure.

Abstract:Hierarchically structured mesoporous SBA-1 single-crystal particles were first synthesized by employing organic mesomorphous complexes of polyelectrolyte-surfactant as templates to guide the assembly of inorganic silicon source precursor. By adjusting the synthesis conditions, the morphology and structure of hierarchically mesoporous silica could be controlled, and then a series of hierarchically mesoporous silica samples with various morphologies and structures were obtained. Hierarchically mesoporous molecular sieves with heteroatoms were produced by direct doping method, and applied in catalytic reactions. Moreover, with this method the mesoporous zeolite Silicalite-1 was successfully synthesized. Hierarchically porous synthesized by the method with polyelectrolyte-surfactant complex as template possessed the characters of single crystal and secondary pores, which were beneficial to the transmission and diffusion of materials. Compared to the mesoporous materials and zeolites with single channel, these hierarchically porous materials exhibited excellent performances in catalysis, adsorption, and so on.

Abstract:Communication: Ordered silica/polystyrene composites were prepared via radical polymerization in silica colloidal crystal templates, and ordered macroporous polymers were accordingly obtained after removing the silica templates. The confinement effect of the templates on the polymers in the composites was investigated. NMR results indicated that the polystyrenes formed both inside and outside the template were atactic. The polystyrene inside the template possessed a higher molecular weight and a narrower molecular weight distribution than the bulk one outside the template. The glass transition temperature of the confined polystyrene increased significantly with decreasing silica sphere size of the templates, and so did the contraction of polymer pores. The smaller the silica sphere size of the templates, the more remarkable is the confinement, which could be explained by entropic confinement of the polymer chains within a fixed inorganic meso-framework.

Abstract:Silica monolith with textural pores and ordered mesopores was fabricated through a sol–gel process by using triblock polymer of F127 as pore directing reagent. In the reaction, F127 demonstrated its dual functions––phase separation inducing function and template function. The former resulted in co-continuous structure of silica skeletons and textural pores, while the latter led to the formation of ordered mesopores.

Abstract:Hierarchically mesoporous silica materials with a bimodal distribution were template-prepared from uniaxially stretched polypropylene membrane in the presence of a surfactant via a sol-gel process. Their regularity and morphologies were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The larger channel pores formed by removing the microfibrils of uniaxially stretched polypropylene membrane have a broad pore size distribution, and their size is around 13 nm. In contrast, the smaller mesopores formed by surfactant templates have a narrow distribution; their size is about 3.9 nm. The size of the smaller pores could be tuned from 2 to 6 nm by selecting different surfactants and by changing the concentration of reactants.

Abstract:In this article, synthesis of nano-sized silica hollow spheres applying positive charged polystyrene as sacrificial templates was introduced. Firstly, nano-sized polystyrene particles were synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization under solvothermal condition. Secondly, silica hollow nanospheres were formed through a simultaneous ‘coating–etching’ process. PVP played a key role in the evolution of nano-sized hollow spheres even if the templates were positive charged and the formation mechanism was different from that of previous studies. TEM results revealed that the morphologies of nano-sized silica hollow spheres not only strongly relied on the amount of reactant, but also the sequence of adding them. TGA illustrated that the interiors of nano-sized silica hollow spheres were not completely ‘hollow’. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis showed that this material had a specific area of 399m2/g. The water retention property of the materials was also investigated.
