Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is crucial in investigating and applying optical vortices (OVs). Here, we propose a novel diffraction device, a binaural circular aperture (BCA), to detect the OAM modes of OVs. The BCA is well designed and composed of a lemniscate and two semicircles. We first investigate the intensity distribution of the OVs passing through the BCA theoretically. The OVs with different OAM modes will produce different diffraction patterns, and the modes can be directly identified from the diffraction fringes. Building this BCA with an amplitude spatial light modulator, the OAM modes ranging from -6 to +6 are experimentally identified, and the results are well consistent with the simulation. When the BCA is resized in the millimetre level, the influence on the identification of OAM modes is very limited. These results show that the BCA we proposed can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly identify the OAM modes of OVs, and shows its insensitivity to the dimensional deviation.

Abstract:Vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) shows promising potential in enlarging communication capacity and improving modulation ability for its mode orthogonality. Although various OAM multiplexing schemes have been proposed to boost channel capacity density, few studies have focused on OAM shift keying (OAM-SK) communication because of the lack of rapid and low-latency mode demodulation technologies. In this study, we propose a neural-network-assisted coherent nanophotonic circuit (CNC) strategy for demodulating OAM modes and investigate its application in OAM-SK communication. The CNC comprises 380 Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) and achieves a unitary matrix transformation by simultaneously modulating the amplitude and phase of optical pulses via multi-light interference, where a neural network-assisted design algorithm is used to obtain the phase parameters in the CNC that satisfy the mapping relationship between feature information and OAM modes. Since the satisfied mapping relationship is performed in the optical domain, OAM modes can be demodulated at the speed of light. We show that this CNC can effectively identify the OAM modes ranging from -10 to +10, and the identification accuracy exceeds 90% under moderate turbulence intensity. As a proof of concept, we simulated a hexadecimal OAM-SK communication link, and the OAM signals under turbulent perturbations were successfully demodulated with an accuracy of 99.33%.

Abstract:We present a method to measure the high-order optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) with a variable cylindrical lens pair. The optical system consists of two cylindrical lenses with the opposite focal length. It produces a rotating position—spatial frequency transformation of phase modulation by changing the angle between the two cylindrical lenses. With this feature, the method can flexibly measure the OAM states of the vortex beams with different beam waists. The OAM states are determined by the number and direction of dark stripes of the diffraction pattern. The measurements of the topological charge and the radial index of Laguerre–Gaussian mode are demonstrated. As a compact high-order OAM measuring device, the variable cylindrical lens pair may find potential applications in optical communication.

Abstract:In recent years, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light with a central phase singularity composed of a specific topological charge has attracted increasing attentions. In addition to the wide range of applications of OAM in optical manipulations and optical communications, the special angular spatial structure of OAM offers irreplaceable advantages for use in rotation measurement. Because of the relationship between OAM and angular position, the azimuthal information of optical fields can be acquired via detection of OAM. Several techniques based on this concept have been proposed to sense objects remotely using their angular motion. This article introduces the applications of OAM in object orientation recognition, rotation sensing, small angle measurement and rotating object imaging.

Abstract:We construct an experimental measurement system for rotation vibration signal detection using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light in a Sagnac interferometer. Inputting light beams with different OAM, we demonstrate that the measured signal and signal-to-noise ratio can be increased by the OAM mode index l. In addition, the Sagnac interferometer can further improve the vibration signal and suppress the environmental noises. Such system has potential applications in high-precision sensing and monitoring of rotation vibrations.

Abstract:We present an optomechanical device designed to allow optical transduction of orbital angular momentum of light. An optically induced twist imparted on the device by light is detected using an integrated cavity optomechanical system based on a nanobeam slot-mode photonic crystal cavity. This device could allow measurement of the orbital angular momentum of light when photons are absorbed by the mechanical element, or detection of the presence of photons when they are scattered into new orbital angular momentum states by a sub-wavelength grating patterned on the device. Such a system allows detection of a $l = 1$ orbital angular momentum field with an average power of $3.9\times10^3$ photons modulated at the mechanical resonance frequency of the device and can be extended to higher order orbital angular momentum states.

Abstract:A novel optical fiber sensing technology based on intensity distribution change in orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode is proposed and implemented herein. The technology utilizes a chiral long-period fiber grating (CLPFG) to directly excite the 1st-order OAM (OAM1) mode. The intensity changes in the coherent superposition state between the fundamental mode and the OAM1 mode at the non-resonant wavelength of the CLPFG is tracked in order to sense the external parameters applied to the grating area. Applying this technology to temperature measurement, the intensity distribution change has a good linear relationship with respect to temperature in the range of 30 °C to 100 °C. When the intensity was denoted by the number of pixels with a gray value of one after binarization of collected images, the sensitivity was 103 px/°C and the corresponding resolution was 0.0097 °C. Meanwhile, theoretical and experimental results show that the sensitivity and resolution can be further improved via changing the area of the collected image. Compared with sensing methods based on spiral interference pattern rotation in previous work, this sensing technology has the advantage of exquisite structure, easy realization, and good stability, thus making it a potential application in practices.

Abstract:The relative phase shift among different components in the superposition of orbital angular momentum (OAM) states contains significant information. However, with existing methods of measuring the OAM spectrum, the phase term of the spectrum coefficient is hard to obtain. In this Letter, a mode-matching method is proposed to identify the complex OAM spectrum with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a charge-coupled device camera. It has the potential to extend the applications of OAM in scenarios sensitive to the phase factor, for instance, in imaging and quantum manipulation. The method is experimentally demonstrated with the superposition of two or three OAM states, while the maximum deviation of the energy ratio and the relative phase shift is 8.4% and 5.5% of 2π, respectively.

Abstract:Light with helical phase structures, carrying quantized orbital angular momentum (OAM), has many applications in both classical and quantum optics, such as high-capacity optical communications and quantum information processing. Frequency conversion is a basic technique to expand the frequency range of fundamental light. The frequency conversion of OAM-carrying light gives rise to new physics and applications such as up-conversion detection of images and high dimensional OAM entanglements. Quasi-phase matching (QPM) nonlinear crystals are good candidates for frequency conversion, particularly for their high-valued effective nonlinear coefficients and no walk-off effect. Here we report the first experimental second-harmonic generation (SHG) of OAM light with a QPM crystal, where a UV light with OAM of 100 is generated. OAM conservation is verified using a specially designed interferometer. With a pump beam carrying an OAM superposition of opposite sign, we observed interesting interference phenomena in the SHG light; specifically, a photonics gear-like structure is obtained that gives direct evidence of OAM conservation, which will be very useful for ultra-sensitive angular measurements. We also develop a theory to reveal the underlying physics of the phenomena. The methods and theoretical analysis shown here are also applicable to other frequency conversion processes, such as sum frequency generation and difference-frequency generation, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.

Abstract:Measuring the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of vortex beams, including the magnitude and the sign, has great application prospects due to its theoretically unbounded and orthogonal modes. Here, the sign-distinguishable OAM measurement in optomechanics is proposed, which is achieved by monitoring the shift of the transmission spectrum of the probe field in a double Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) rotational-cavity system. Compared with the traditional single LG rotational cavity, an asymmetric optomechanically induced transparency window can occur in our system. Meanwhile, the position of the resonance valley has a strong correlation with the magnitude and sign of OAM. This originally comes from the fact that the effective detuning of the cavity mode from the driving field can vary with the magnitude and sign of OAM, which causes the spectral shift to be directional for different signs of OAM. Our scheme solves the shortcoming of the inability to distinguish the sign of OAM in optomechanics, and works well for high-order vortex beams with topological charge value $\pm 45$, which is a significant improvement for measuring OAM based on the cavity optomechanical system.

Abstract:Optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) provides an additional dimension for photons to carry information in high-capacity optical communication. Although the practical needs have informed the generations of miniaturized devices to manipulate the OAM modes in various integrated platforms, it is still a challenge for on-chip OAM detection to match the newly developed compact OAM emitter and OAM transmission fiber. Here, we demonstrate an ultracompact device, i.e., a single plasmonic nanohole, to efficiently measure an optical beam's OAM state in a simple and nondestructive way. The device size is reduced to a few hundreds of nanometers, which can be easily fabricated and installed in the current OAM devices. It is a flexible and robust way for in situ OAM monitoring and detection in optical fiber networks and long-distance optical communication systems. With proper optimization of the nanohole parameters, this approach could be further extended to discriminate the OAM information multiplexed in multiple wavelengths and polarizations.

Abstract:The electromagnetic beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has a twisted phase front, which can induce a rotational Doppler frequency shift when it is illuminating on a spinning object. In this paper, the rotational Doppler effect induced by a radio wave carrying OAM is theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. Compared with an optical vortex beam, the divergence angle of a radio wave carrying OAM is typically larger than that of an optical vortex beam, which results in the radio OAM-based sensing system with short-range detection distance. In this case, the receiver's location and the deflection of the rotating plane are important factors that affect the radio rotational Doppler effect. For an off-axis receiver or a deflected spinning object, a series of extra Doppler frequency shifts (L ± N)Ω/2π are induced when the spinning object is illuminated by a wave carrying OAM with topological charge L, even for L = 0, the plane wave. Hence, the high order OAM wave should be used to distinguish the real rotational frequency shift and improve detection sensitivity of spinning velocity. Combining the rotational Doppler effect with the linear Doppler effect, a vector velocity detecting scheme is discussed.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) detection underpins almost all aspects of vortex beams' advances such as communication and quantum analogy. Conventional schemes are frustrated by low speed, complicated system, limited detection range. Here, we devise an intelligent processor composed of photonic and electronic neurons for OAM spectrum measurement in a fast, accurate and direct manner. Specifically, optical layers extract invisible topological charge information from incoming light and a shallow electronic layer predicts the exact spectrum. The integration of optical-computing promises us a compact single-shot system with high speed and energy efficiency, neither necessitating reference wave nor repetitive steps. Importantly, our processor is endowed with salient generalization ability and robustness against diverse structured light and adverse effects. We further raise a universal model interpretation paradigm to reveal the underlying physical mechanisms in the hybrid processor, as distinct from conventional 'black-box' networks. Such interpretation algorithm can improve the detection efficiency. We also complete the theory of optoelectronic network enabling its efficient training. This work not only contributes to the explorations on OAM physics and applications, and also broadly inspires the advanced links between intelligent computing and physical effects.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) using orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a recently developed physical layer transmission technique, which has obtained intensive interest among optics, millimeter-wave, and radio frequency due to its capability to enhance communication capacity while retaining an ultra-low receiver complexity. In this paper, the system model based on OAM-MDM is mathematically analyzed and it is theoretically concluded that such system architecture can bring a vast reduction in receiver complexity without capacity penalty compared with conventional line-of-sight multiple-in-multiple-out systems under the same physical constraint. Furthermore, a $4\times 4$ OAM-MDM communication experiment adopting a pair of easily realized Cassegrain reflector antennas capable of multiplexing/demultiplexing four orthogonal OAM modes of $l = {-3}$ , −2, +2, and +3 is carried out at a microwave frequency of 10 GHz. The experimental results show high spectral efficiency as well as low receiver complexity.

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 25, June 2022. In this Letter, we propose an orbital angular momentum (OAM) sensor to simultaneously measure the dynamic micro-displacement and the direction of a moving object in real time. The micro-displacement of the moving object can be detected by the calculation of the petals' rotation angle caused by the coaxial interference between the measured OAM beam and its reference OAM beam, and the direction (forward or backward) of the moving object can be achieved by the clockwise or anticlockwise of the petals' rotation. We also develop an algorithm to monitor the petals' rotation angle and the rotation direction. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed sensor can achieve high precision ([math]) and a longer measuring range ([math]). Additionally, the OAM sensor is sensitive to the topological charge in the OAM mode, the initial distance, and the velocity of the moving object. The sensor can perform the non-contact measurement, so it will be a promising method in micro-vibration sensing, surface unevenness sensing, and microbial movement sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel detection scheme for the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light using circular plasmonic lens. Owing to a division-of-amplitude interference phenomenon between the surface plasmon waves and directly transmitted light, specific intensity distributions are formed near the plasmonic lens surface under different OAM excitations. Due to different phase behaviors of the evanescent surface plasmon wave and the direct transmission, interference patterns rotate as the observation plane moves away from the lens surface. The rotation direction is a direct measure of the sign of OAM, while the amount of rotation is linked to the absolute value of the OAM. This OAM detection scheme is validated experimentally and numerically. Analytical expressions are derived to provide insights and explanations of this detection scheme. This work forms the basis for the realization of a compact and integrated OAM detection architect that may significantly benefit optical information processing with OAM states.

Abstract:The invention discloses an optical fiber sensor. According to the optical fiber sensor, a laser device is used for outputting basic-mode Gauss beams, one basic-mode Gauss beam is divided into a first beam and a second beam by an optical fiber sensing unit, the first beam is modulated into an orbital angular momentum beam, an interference beam is formed by the second beam and the orbital angular momentum beam, and the interference beam is output to a beam expander; the interference beam is expanded by the beam expander; the interference beam passing through the beam expander is divided into a first interference sub-beam and a second interference sub-beam by a measuring unit, first optical power corresponding to the first interference sub-beam and second optical power corresponding to the second interference sub-beam are measured, and the change value of the first optical power and the change value of the second optical power are obtained. In the optical fiber sensor, the interference beam is output after the basic-mode Gauss beam is divided into the two beams by the optical fiber sensing unit, the change values of the optical power of the two interference sub-beams are measured through the measuring unit, the change values of the optical power can be used for calculating the variation of optical path difference in later processing process, and then the functions of the sensor are achieved.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been adopted to measure the shape of static objects and the translation motion of moving objects in optical remote sensing. Most of these studies rely on measuring the intensity variation of OAM beams. However, the OAM intensity does not change with the rotation of the spinning object, but its phase changes. The phase variation is proved to be proportional to the object’s angular velocity. Since a rotating object will cause the OAM phase dependent on time, the OAM phase needs to be measured instantaneously, to support the OAM-based angular velocity measurement. In this work, we report a scheme to measure the angular velocity of a spinning object using a photonic OAM phase spectrum. A phase-to-intensity strategy is implemented to enable the real-time multi-OAM phase measurement, in which the phase can be determined with the intensities of four focal spots in a two-dimensional array generated by a phase-only spatial light modulator. The experimental results show that the average error of the measured angular velocity could be under 2.45% by detecting the phase of two OAM modes. This OAM-based angular velocity detection method provides a complementary approach to characterize the rotational Doppler effect, especially for slow angular motion.
