Abstract:The geology of Zhejiang coastal area in Southeast China is characterized by numerous Late Mesozoic intrusive rocks and widespread mafic dyke swarms, which indicate continental lithospheric extensional events during the Jurassic and Cretaceous. This work is focused on using multisource high-resolution remote sensing images (Worldview2, Geoeyel and Quickbird2) to identify the geometry, morphology and location of previously undocumented and poorly understood dyke swarms exposed on the islands in Zhejiang Province. The geometry of each dyke is described by its strike, length and thickness. The spatial distribution of the dyke density and crustal dilation are obtained based on the statistics of 774 extracted mafic dykes. Field surveys are performed in some islands in order to analyze the detailed geometric features and assess the interpretative accuracy. The spectral measurement and analysis of mafic dykes are performed as well for remote sensing imagery processing and lithological interpretation. The results show that the frequency distributions of the length and thickness of dykes follow power law curves. The maximum and mean dyke thicknesses are 11.2 m and 1.43 m, respectively. The crustal dilation of the islands ranges from 0.09% to 7.4%. From the north to the south islands, the dilation decreases gradually. The dyke frequency and density have the same distribution as the dilation. According to 40. _ Ar 3gAr age (Zhongshanjie archipelago) and U-Pb zircon age (Sijiao Island) of the mafic dyke, the dyke swarms on the eastern Zhejiang islands emplaced at around 87-97 Ma. The cross-cutting relationships of dykes and host rocks show that the mafic dyke swarms have close spatial correlations with granite. The dykes stretch in various directions whereas the NE-trending dykes dominate. Our research reveals four intrusive events that imply the crustal extension and intermittent variation of the regional stress field in the coastal area of southeastern China in the Late Cretaceous. Emplacement mechanism of diabase dyke swarms in Shengsi Island: Evidence from magnetic anisotropics

Abstract:Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility(AMS) has been extensively used in the last two decades to determine the emplacement mechanism of volcanic dykes. Late Cretaceous diabase dyke swarms are well distributed in Shengsi Island, eastern China. AMS was performed in 8 diabase dykes with distinct strikes. Rock magnetism shows that multidomain Ti-poor titanomagnetites with trace maghemites carry the magnetic fabrics in diabase dykes. The corrected anisotropy degree (P-j) of all specimens is less than 1.2, indicating an original fabric. The dimensional orientations of three susceptibility axes of different dykes are completely different. Two types of AMS fabric are recognized; (1) 'Normal' fabric (7 dykes) defined by the clustering of K-1-K-2 axes on the dyke wall whereas K-3 axis is nearly perpendicular to the wall, which is interpreted as fabrics induced by magma flow; (2) 'Inverse' fabric (1 dyke) defined by K-2-K-3 plane parallel to the dyke wall and K-1 perpendicular to dyke wall. Types of AMS fabric are not changed after AF demagnetization at 100 mT. According to the analysis of the imbrications of magnetic foliations with the dyke walls, we can infer magma flow direction: (1) In Huangsha Village, the NNE-trending dyke is fed by horizontal or sub-horizontal flow from southwest to northeast, while the EW-trending dyke is laterally injected from west to east; (2) At Liujingtan, the NW-trending dyke is laterally injected from southeast to northwest while the NE-trending dyke from southwest to northeast. This emplacement mode suggests that a mafic magma source may exist in the southwestern area far away from the study area. The diabase dyke swarms at Shengsi Island are the products of strong EW-trending or NNE-trending lithosphere extensions induced by Pacific Plate subducting to Eurasian plate.
Interlinking the Hotspot Track in the Arctic and its Implications for Paleo-plate Reconstrution

Abstract:The Siberian-Icelandic hotspot track is the only preserved continental hotspot track. Although the track and its associated age progression between 160 Ma and 60 Ma are not yet well understood, this section of the track is closely linked to the tectonic evolution of Amerasian Basin, the Alpha-Mendeleev Ridge and Baffin Bay. Using paleomagnetic data, volcanic structures and marine geophysical data, the paleogeography of Arctic plates (Eurasian plate, North American Plate, Greenland Plate and Alaska Microplate) was reconstructed and the Siberian-Icelandic hotspot track was interlinked between 160 Ma and 60 Ma. Our results suggested that the Alpha-Mendeleev Ridge could be a part of the hotspot track that formed between 160 Ma and 120 Ma. During this period, the hotspot controlled the tectonic evolution of Baffin Bay and the distribution of mafic rock in Greenland. Throughout the Mesozoic Era, the aforementioned Arctic plates experienced clockwise rotation and migrated northeast towards the North Pacific. The vertical influence from the ancient Icelandic mantle plume broke this balance, slowing down some plates and resulting in the opening of several ocean basins. This process controlled the tectonic evolution of the Arctic.

Abstract:Magma flow directions for 6 Late Cretaceous mafic dyke swarms exposed in coastal southeastern China (SE China) were analyzed using anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and field evidence. Normal AMS fabrics are predominant. The AMS of the dyke swarms originates mainly from the distribution anisotropy of intersertal magnetite that crystallized during late stage magma flow or after the magma cooled. The AMS fabrics record tectonic stress combined with magma flow. Sub-vertical to vertical magma flow is inferred from symmetrical imbricated magnetic foliations of dyke walls and field evidence for 5 dyke swarms. The inferred (sub-) vertical flow directions also indicate that the magma chambers were probably just beneath the sampled locations. Low anisotropy degree, different orientations of principal AMS axes, and asymmetrical magnetic foliations of normal fabrics oblique to dyke walls indicate syntectonic emplacement of the Late Cretaceous dyke swarms under an extensional tectonic regime caused by Paleo-Pacific plate subduction.

Abstract:The Songliao Basin is characterized by episodic rifting and intense volcanism during its early development, and forms a key concealed part of the Late Mesozoic magmatic province of NE China. Few precise geochronological and geochemical data were previously available for the volcanic elements of this basin, restricting understanding of its geodynamic setting and evolution. We present new SHRIMP U–Pb zircon ages and geochemical data for the volcanic rocks from the northern Songliao Basin, which limit this volcanism to the Early Cretaceous period (115–109Ma). Although dominated by rhyolite, the rocks cover a wide compositional spectrum encompassing trachyandesite, basaltic trachyandesite, trachyte and dacite. This suite exhibits a range of geochemical signatures characteristic of subduction-related genesis, falling into a high-K calc-alkaline series, with enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), and weak depletion in high field strength elements (HFSE) and heavy rare earth elements (HREE). The suite also shares a common isotopic composition, consistent with derivation from partial melting of a single depleted mantle source. This Early Cretaceous volcanism occurred in an extensional back-arc setting associated with the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate, large scale upwelling of the asthenosphere, and intensive lithospheric thinning of the eastern continental margin of NE China which may have lasted until ca. 109Ma.

Abstract:The tectonogeomorphology of the area pre-dating the Indian-Eurasian collision in west China draws dramatic attentions of geologists,the understanding of former tectonogeomorphology will help us to rule out the previous tectonic events from the collision.We select the sediments at the bottom of Cenozoic sequences in Sikouzi section,which were revealed in the east of Liupanshan situated in the northeast of the Tibetan Plateau,to reveal the pre-dating tectonogeomorphology of Liupan Shan.Based on detailed sedimentologic and paleocurrent studies,we suggest that a geomorphologic relief existed in Liupanshan during late Cretaceous to early Cenozoic,which possibly resulted from the far-field effects of the assembly of Kohistan-Dras Arc and Gondwana fragments to Eurasian continent.

Abstract:The Arctic is rich in hydrocarbon resources,but its level of geological research is almost lowest in the world due to harsh natural climatic conditions and complicated tectonic evolution.Herein,the tectonic map of the Arctic (1 ∶ 5 000 000) was compiled based on newly updated geophysical data,and combination of geology,geomorphology,and resource data.From compiling of the tectonic map,this paper recognized the tectonic evolution of Arctic to be influenced by the vertical effect of Iceland Mantle Plume,and the horizontal effect of clockwise rotation of Eurasia-Laurentia supercontinent.The tectonic evolution of Arctic Ocean is divided into three stages:(1) Early Mesozoic.Paleo-Pacific Ocean subducted northwards.Paleo-Asian Ocean closed,leading to the formation of supercontinent.(2) Jurassic-Cretaceous.South Anui Suture was formed,accompanied by the coupling of Canada Basin opening and South Anui Ocean closing.This process is accommodated by development of transform faults.(3) Cenozoic.North Mid-Atlantic Ridge extended northwards,leading to the forming of Gakkel Ridge.Arctic Ocean represents the hinge of global tectonic domains.Along with the extension of Gakkel Ridge,it will connect with North Pacific tectonic domain (Far East Orogen),changing the global tectonic pattern since Mesozoic.

Abstract:A lot of Meso-Proterozoic undeformed and unmetamorphic NW-trending or N-trending mafic dyke swarms develop in the western Shandong, which are conspicuous extensional structures emplacing into Early Precambrian crystal basement. The mafic dyke swarms in the western Shandong are an unorogenic igneous activity as the tholeiite series basalt in the intraplate continental rift environment relative to the continental rifting. The dyke swarms are enriched in LILE, relatively depleted in HFSE, enriched in Cr and Ni and intensively depleted in tholeiite. The mode of REE with enriched LREE is right-dip curve. The trace elements and rare earth elements show that the magma source of the mafic dyke swarms in the western Shandong are from enriched mantle.The mafic dyke swarms in the western Shandong is with the original relation to the Yanliao—Zhongtiao aulacaogens based on the distribution, structural character, geochemistry,magma sources and paleotectonic stress field.
The Discovery of the Neoarchean Mafic Dyke Swarm in Hengshan and Reinterpretation of the Previous “wutai Greenstone Belt”

Abstract:The structural mapping and section study indicate that the “greenstone belts” in the southern to central parts of Hengshan were intensively sheared and transposed mafic dyke swarm, which originally intruded into the Neoarchean grey gneiss and high-pressure granulite terrain (HPGT). The HPGT is characterized by flat-dipping structures, to the south it became steep and was cut by the Dianmen mafic dyke swarm. After high-pressure granulite-facies metamorphic event, the mafic dyke swarm occurred, and was associated with the extensional setting and reworked by the late strike-slip shearing. The zircon age dating proves that the Dianmen mafic dyke swarm was emplaced during the period between 2499±4 Ma and 2512±3 Ma, followed by late tectonothermal reworking. The Dianmen mafic dyke swarm further documents the extensional episode in the central to northern parts of North China Craton (NCC), providing the important constraint for the limit between Archean and Proterozoic and correlation between NCC and other cratonic blocks of the world.

Abstract:A lot of Mesoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms develop in northern Shanxi, which are undeformed and unmetamorphosed as conspicurious marks in Precambrian tectonic evolution of North China Craton. These mafic dyke swarms emplaced quickly and their temperature was very high, about 1100 ∼ 1200°C. Based on the study of petrology and geochemistry of mafic dykes in this area, the dykes were formed in intraplate continental rift environment which was an extensional continental aulacogen. Comparing the geochemical analysis between the mafic dykes and volcanic rocks in Yanliao- Zhongtiao aulacogens, the mafic magma of dyke swarms maybe came from the deep bottom of aulacogens. The mafic magma emplaced northwestward into the pre-existed fractures in northern Shanxi to form the mafic dyke swarms from the deep bottom of aulacogens.

Abstract:Regional mafic dyke swarms are commonly emplaced in extensional tectonic settings and are typically considered to be linked with continental break-up. A large number of mafic dykes (areal extent of ~40,000km2) have recently been documented in the middle of the Qiangtang terrane, northern Tibet. Zircon U–Pb isotope analyses using a sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) indicate that the dykes were emplaced in the Early Permian (279±2Ma, 283±1Ma, 285±1Ma and 285±3Ma). Whole-rock geochemical data show that the Qiangtang mafic dykes are tholeiitic in composition and exhibit relative enrichment in light rare earth element (LREE) and depletion in Nb, Ta and Ti, resembling continental intra-plate basalts. Whole-rock Sr–Nd and zircon Hf isotopic data suggest that mafic dyke magma was derived from a depleted mantle source (εNd(T)=+5.1 to+7.6 and εHf(T)=+4.9 to+14.8). The chemical and isotopic characteristics make the mafic dykes similar to the Panjal Traps and Permian basalts in the Tethyan Himalayas. The contemporaneous and widespread emplacement of ca. 283Ma continental intra-plate basaltic rocks in the Qiangtang terrane and in the Himalayas is suggestive of a Large Igneous Province (LIP). This LIP is linked to the initial rifting and opening of the Meso-Tethys Ocean during the Permian.

Abstract:Siziwangqi of Inner Mongolia is located on the north margin of North China Craton,the junction of North China Craton and Siberia.Granulite xenoliths are found there in Cretaceous basalt.These xenoliths are mainly plagioclase-pyroxenite.The K-Ar isotopic dating of the basalt is between 108.6-128.4?Ma.These granulite xenoliths are not only important for understanding the composition and interaction between the lower lithosphere and the mantle,but also direct evidence for Mesozoic delamination of North China Craton.

Abstract:A suit of highly potassic basalt bearing deep-source xenoliths has been discovered recently in the Siziwangqi area, Inner Mongolia. The host rock shows black and compact structure, characterized by alkaline-rich(K 2O+Na 2O 5%), high K (K 2O 2.5%～3.19%) and high Ti (TiO 2 2.03%～2.71%). The whole rock K-Ar isotopic age is early Cretaceous.After the close of petro-asian ocean, the North China Craton(NCC) has experienced intensive intra-continental contraction and extension. In the late early Cretaceous ,the NCC turned into contraction stage again by the influence of the subduction of Pacific plate and Indian plate. Siziwangqi area is on the joint of NCC and Siberia. The discovery of the shoshonite is important to research Mesozoic tectonic and deep-inside substance evolution of the NCC.

The Late Mesoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms in Australia and East Antarctica might constitute additional subswarms of the giant radiating dyke swarm. A possible Late Mesoproterozoic mantle plume is placed at the focal area of the giant radiating dyke swarm between North America and the landmass (West Australia- East Antarctica). This mantle plume triggered the continuous extension at ca. 1.3-1.2 Ga, which extended into much of Columbia and led to the final fragmentation of the Columbia supercontinent. Abstract:The central Tibetan Plateau, particularly the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone, hosts abundant and complex Late Mesozoic geological records and world-class mineral resources. However, intense debate persists about the origin and tectonic setting of these geological records and mineral resources, which impedes a comprehensive understanding of regional Late Mesozoic tectonic evolution and mineralization. In this study, we investigated the petrochronology, geochemistry, and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic characteristics of similar to 120 Ma magmatic rocks in this region. We explored their petrogenesis and sources, and in conjunction with their spatiotemporal distribution and scale, we facilitated a first proposal that these magmatic rocks were derived from similar to 120 Ma hotspot-subduction zone interaction and that world-class mineral deposits were formed in this geological setting. This study is the first to identify geological records of hotspot-subduction interaction in the central Tibetan Plateau and it has significant implications for gaining a deeper understanding of the closing processes of the Late Cretaceous Epoch in the Meso-Tethys Ocean. This study also highlights the substantial contribution of this hotspot-subduction zone interaction to the formation of world-class mineral deposits in the region, and thus has crucial significance for guiding mineral exploration in the central Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract:Late Paleoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms are widespread in the Shanxi Province in the Western Block and Central Orogenic Zone, and also in the Shandong Province of the Eastern Block of the North China Craton (NCC). Both of the mafic dyke swarms in Shandong and Shanxi plot mainly in the field of continental rift environment. The trace element spidergrams and the rare-earth element (REE) graphs of both mafic dyke swarms show similar geochemical features to data from the lavas (Xiong'er Group) in the Zhongtiao–Yanliao aulacogens. This suggests that the origin of the mafic dyke swarms is related to the aulacogens. The trace elements and isotopic data from the mafic dykes and lavas in the aulacogens suggest that the mafic magma is derived from partial melting of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle, and contaminated by lower crust, then intruded the pre-existing fractures to form mafic dyke swarms in a rifting environment. The mafic dyke swarms and aulacogens represent a continuous extension event from 1.84–1.77 Ga in response to the breakup of the supercontinent Columbia.
Tectonic significance and geodynamic processes of large‐scale Early Cretaceous granitoid magmatic events in the southern Great Xing'an Range, North China

Abstract:The origin and geodynamic evolution of peak Early Cretaceous magmatism in the southern Great Xing'an Range, North China, have long been controversial. Here we report new U‐Pb zircon ages (141–129 Ma) of a suite of dioritic‐granitic rocks from central Inner Mongolia, far from the sutures or plate boundaries of the Paleo‐Pacific and Mongol‐Okhotsk oceans, thus delineating an Early Cretaceous intracontinental magmatic province, which had a peak activity at 130–120 Ma. Dioritic suite including diorite, tonalite, and granodiorite shows variable zircon εHf(t) of +1.4 to + 11.8 and δ18O values of +5.7 to +6.9‰, while granitic suite consisting of monzogranite, syenogranite, and granite porphyry also records variable zircon εHf(t) of −0.9 to +15.0 and δ18O values of +6.3 to +8.1‰, suggesting crustal melting by preexisting crustal source with important recycled supracrustal components including fluids. Furthermore, these rocks show variable whole‐rock δ7Li values (−0.6 to +12.1‰), indicating fluids played an important role in magma source. We propose a deep‐sourced water‐fluxed melting scenario by ancient hydrous slabs inherited from the Paleo‐Asian Ocean that were trapped in the deep interior, thus releasing aqueous fluids to melt the lithospheric mantle and produce water‐rich mafic magmas. These mafic magmas were underplated into crust where they promoted water‐fluxed partial melting to generate the large‐scale Early Cretaceous magmatism in the southern Great Xing'an Range. Such melting due to fluxing of aqueous fluids was probably operating as a widespread process responsible for the Early Cretaceous dramatically tectonomagmatic events and evolution of continental crust in NE Asia.
