Abstract:A magnetic field sensor based on the silica optofluidic ring resonator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. Magnetic fluid is filled in the core of the microcapillary to experience the strength change of the applied magnetic field. When the whispering gallery modes circulate in the wall of the microcapillary, it can experience the increasing refractive index of magnetic fluid with the increase in the magnetic field strength, leading to the redshift of the resonant wavelength. The maximum sensitivity of 75.7 pm/mT and figure of merit of 105 T −1 are realized, respectively, corresponding to a large dynamic magnetic field range from 15 to 125 mT. By optimizing the concentration of the kerosene-based magnetic fluid, the detection limit of 2.2 mT and the measurement resolution of 0.9 mT are achieved, respectively. This work provides a novel magnetic field sensing scheme with high performance using the optofluidic ring resonator and further broadens its applications.

Abstract:A compact optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on a magnetic-ionic-liquid-functionalized photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The magnetic field sensor was fabricated by splicing an index-guiding PCF having one magnetic-ionic-liquid-infiltrated (MIL-infiltrated) air hole in the innermost layer infiltrated with conventional single-mode fibers. The transmission spectral magnetic response of the proposed sensor have been measured and theoretically analyzed. Owing to the effective interaction between the MIL and transmission light as well as the controllable attenuation property of MIL, the magnetic field sensitivity reaches up to -0.01991 dB/Oe for a relatively linear magnetic intensity range of 0 to 440 Oe.

Abstract:A kind of magnetic field sensing system based on capillary tube filled with magnetic fluids is developed in this work. The analytical expressions for the sensing system are derived in detail. The sensitivity and other sensing properties of the system are investigated numerically and experimentally. The focal line position of the emergent light after the capillary is related with the strength of the externally applied magnetic fields and recorded and judged by the CCD to sense the magnetic field indirectly. The sensing mechanism is analyzed and ascribed to the magnetically tunable refractive index of magnetic fluids. This kind of sensing unit has the advantages of miniaturization of device, easy operation, and lower dosage of sensing media.

Abstract:We report a magnetic-field sensor by merging the advantages of optical fiber Michelson interferometers with that of magnetic fluid. Compact and low-cost optical fiber Michelson interferometers were first fabricated by a high-frequency CO(2) laser, and then they were inserted into glass capillaries with water-based Fe(3)O(4) magnetic fluid as sensing elements. The sensing characteristics have been investigated and the experimental results show that the reflective spectrum of the fiber-magnetic sensor linearly shifted with the change of the magnetic-field strength that is perpendicular to the axial of the devices. The fiber-magnetic sensor with interference arm's diameter of 50 μm is most sensitive to the external magnetic field, and the sensitivity is up to 64.9 pm/mT, which is 20 times higher than that of 125 μm diameter.

Abstract:An intensity modulation optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on MZI and magnetic fluid is proposed and demonstrated. The MZI is composed of a no core fiber-thin core fiber-no core fiber (NTN) structure and the cladding of thin core fiber is etched by hydrofluoric acid. The fiber structure is immersed in magnetic fluid. The sensitivity of the etched device is 5.3 times that of the non-etched device. The maximum sensitivity of magnetic field intensity achieved in our experiment as high as 0.563 dB/Oe. Meanwhile, the fringe visibility achieved 30.78 dB. This device has the advantages of convenient manufacture, small volume and high sensitivity. It has application potential in the field of magnetic field sensing.

Abstract:A kind of novel and compact magnetic field sensor has been proposed and investigated experimentally. The proposed sensor consists of a tapered single mode fiber coupled with a nanostructured magnetic fluid-infiltrated photonic crystal fiber, which is easy to be fabricated. The response of magnetic fluid to magnetic field is used to measure the intensity of magnetic field via whispering gallery mode. The magnetic field-dependent shift in resonance wavelength is observed. The maximum magnetic field intensity sensitivity is 53 pm/mT. The sensor sensitivity is inversely proportional to the thickness of the photonic crystal fiber cladding.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel all-fiber magnetic field sensor based on a device consisting of microfiber knot resonator (MKR) and magnetic fluid (MF) is proposed for the first time. MF is infused into a homemade sealed cell containing a partially embedded MKR in low-index polymer as sensing element. Experimental results show that the resonance wavelength of the proposed sensor regularly varies with changes of the applied magnetic field. When the magnetic field increases to 22mT, the wavelength shift reaches nearly 200pm.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) sensitivity sensor filled with magnetic liquid is introduced and investigated with the finite element method (FEM). To regulate the energy coupling involving the two cores, the magnetic fluid is filled into the pore between the two cores. To adjust the coupling between the supermodes in the DC-PCF, the refractive index (RI) of the air hole filled magnetic fluid may change due to the external magnetic field. This specifically created a magnetic fluid-filled DC-PCF; the magnetic fluid-filled hole is not used as the core for energy transmission, thus avoiding transmission loss. The dip wavelength and the magnetic field displayed an excellent linear connection between 80 and 260 Oe, depending on the numerical data. The detection sensitivity of the magnetic field reached 515.75 pm/Oe at a short fiber length of 482 μm. The designed magnetic fluid-filled DC-PCF has high sensitivity and small volume and has great application prospects in magnetic field detection in the medical and industrial fields.

Microfiber magnetic field sensor with enhanced sensitivity and resolution

Abstract:Magnetic field as a kind of objective substance contains abundant physical information, so high sensitivity and resolution measurement for the magnetic field has great significance in scientific and industrial fields. In this work, we verify a highly sensitive cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer (C-MZI) sensor based on optical Vernier effect for the magnetic field measurement, which is composed of a reference MZI (R-MZI) without magnetic fluids (MFs) connected in series with a sensing MZI (S-MZI) with MFs. An evident envelope and shift induced by the external magnetic field is observed in the transmission spectra of the C-MZI, resulting in the sensitivity being elevated by an amplification factor. The experimental results reveal a wavelength sensitivity of -5.148 nm/mT in the range of 10.15~30.44 mT, being ~4.77 of that in the single S-MZI. In order to further improve the detection resolution of the magnetic field, a magnetic field measurement system based on the combination of the above S-MZI and an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed, and the spectral response is tested in a small magnetic field range of 1.45~1.90 mT, obtaining a spectral sensitivity of 3.18 kHz/mT, which proves the detection of less than 1 Oe. The designed sensor and system possess the merits of high sensitivity, high resolution, simple fabrication, fast response and low phase noise, having broad prospects in the fields of magnetic field measurement.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a new type of optical functional material, which has interesting optical characteristics under an external magnetic field. In this letter, the magneto-optical characteristic of the magnetic fluid was adopted to form a novel fiber-optic magnetic field sensor. The sensor probe was composed of an extrinsic fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer and magnetic fluid. The refractive index of the magnetic fluid would be changed with the increase of magnetic field. Preliminary experiment was carried out to verify the feasibility of the sensor. The magnetic field measurement sensitivity was 0.0431 nm/Gs in the experiment. The measurement resolution was better than 0.5 Gs at the measurement range from 0 to 400 Gs. The sensor has the advantages of simple structure, compact size, and easy fabrication.

Abstract:A compact and ultra-sensitive magnetic field sensor has been proposed by exploiting a microfiber-assisted Mach-Zehnder interferometer functionalized by magnetic fluids. We have experimentally investigated the transmission spectral responses of the proposed sensor to the variation of applied magnetic field intensity and environmental temperature. The interference dips exhibit a magnetic field sensitivity as large as −1.193 nm/Oe for a low magnetic field intensity range of 3 Oe to 21 Oe. By using the sensing matrix containing the magnetic field as well as temperature sensitivities for different interference dips, the temperature cross-sensitivity issue could be effectively resolved. Our proposed sensor is anticipated to find potential applications in weak magnetic field detection, and moreover, the immunity to temperature cross-sensitivity effect ensures its applicability in temperature-fluctuated environments.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a new type of functional material. In a certain magnetic field, it can aggregate to form a magnetic fluid photonic crystal owing to a two-phase separation. When the material is used in surface plasmon resonance sensing technology, surface plasma waves can be influenced by the presence of the formed structure. In this paper, a novel magnetic field sensor is described. The modulatory effect of the surface plasma wave was analyzed when the magnetic fluid photonic crystal was formed near the Au film, and the shift of resonance angle with an increasing magnetic field was computed. The simulation results showed that when the magnetic fluid photonic crystal was formed, an evanescent wave would resonate with a surface plasma wave at a wavelength of 1.8 mu m. The resonance angle shifts from 79.2 degrees to 85.1 degrees when the applied magnetic field is increased from 15 to 25 mT. The obtainable sensitivity was 0.612 degrees/mT.
Solidly Mounted Bulk Acoustic Wave Resonant Magnetic Field Sensor Based on Magnetoelastic Effect

Abstract:This paper reports a nano-electromechanical resonant magnetic field sensor by integrating solidly mounted bulk acoustic wave resonator (SMR-BAW) with an ultra-sensitive magnetoelastic amorphous film. By exploiting Mason equivalent model and transmission line calculation method, we theoretically demonstrate the capability to realize both excellent resonance characteristic and ultra-high magnetic field sensitivity in such composite configuration. The proposed device achieves an outstanding maximum magnetic sensitivity of 172 MHz/Oe around resonance frequency of 2.836 GHz with quality factor of 552. Furthermore, we have also investigated the dependence of maximum sensitivity on the thickness of magnetic sensitive layer, which indicates there exists an optimal thickness value to maximize the sensitivity of the sensor. The demonstrated device holds great promise for ultra-low magnetic field detection in civilian and military applications.
Magnetic Field Sensor Based on Twisted Fiber and Magnetic Fluid

Abstract:A magnetic field sensor based on twisted single mode fiber and magnetic fluid (MF) is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor consists of two twisted points on a single mode fiber introduced by flame-heated and rotation treatment. Cladding modes are excited at the first twisted point and part of them are coupled back to the fiber core at the second twisted point, forming an inline Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Then the structure was inserted into a MF-filled capillary for magnetic field sensing. Owing to the refractive index tunable characteristic of the MF, the destructive interference wavelength will shift as the magnetic field intensity varies. Experimental result shows that a sensitivity of 55.5pm/Oe is achieved for static magnetic field measurement ranging from 20-120 Oe.

Abstract:A highly sensitive reflective Fabry–Perot (FP) magnetic field sensor using magnetic fluid (MF) based on the Vernier effect is presented and experimentally verified. Capillary action acts as an injection of MF into an FP cavity, which is composed of a single-mode fiber (SMF), capillary glass tube, and a short section of SMF coated with gold film. Vernier effect is formed by the MF cavity and air cavity in the FP magnetic field sensor, where the surface of MF is concave. The refractive index (RI) of MF depends on the magnetic field, and therefore, the wavelength of the reflection spectrum of the fabricated sensor can be sensitive to the magnetic field. The magnetic field sensor's sensitivity is up to 1.02602 nm/Gs from 118.768 to 166.261 Gs, and the resolution is 0.0078 Gs. The sensor shows good linearity within the range of 71.317–231.751 Gs, and the linearity is larger than 0.999. In this article, a new type FP cavity fabricated by splicing SMF inside the capillary glass tube is proposed, and MF can be injected into the FP cavity, which can also be applied to other liquids to generate Vernier effect. The concave surface of MF is creatively applied to the sensors, and the experimental verification is carried out in a capillary glass tube, which provides a basis on the capillary action of other fluids in fiber sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel compact optical magnetic field sensor composed of a single-mode microfiber sagnac loop interferometer (SMSLI) and ferrofluid (FF). The refractive index of FF cladding in the twist area of SMSLI is changed with the externally applied magnetic field, which makes the dip-wavelength of the SMSLI transmission spectra shift. The experimental results show that the transmission spectrum of the proposed sensor shifts regularly with the change of externally applied magnetic field intensity. When the magnetic field intensity increased from 0 to 600 Oe, the dip-wavelength of transmission spectrum shifted nearly 200 pm. In addition, a minimal detectable magnetic field strength of the sensor responding to the 50-Hz alternating magnetic field was demonstrated to be ~3 Oe experimentally.

Abstract:A magnetic field measurement method based on the magneto-volume effect of magnetic fluid (MF) and Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometer (FPI) is proposed, which has higher magnetic field sensitivity and shorter response time than the traditional optical fiber methods. The MF is partially injected into the fabricated FP cavity composed of two sections of SMFs and a capillary glass tube (CGT), where the FPI is made up of optical fiber end face and MF end face. When the external magnetic field is applied to the sensor, the volume change of MF will cause the change of air cavity length. Therefore, the reflection spectrum changes with external magnetic field due to the magneto-volume effect of MF. Experimental results show that the magnetic field sensor shows a sensitivity of 268.81 pm/Gs from 15.5 to 139.7 Gs even with a small amount of MF. The response time is 0.2 s at a step magnetic field of 7.7, 31.0, 46.5, and 139.7 Gs. In this work, the magnetic field sensor boasts high sensitivity, good repeatability, short response time, and low cost, which shows a great potential in applications.

Abstract:A plasmonic fiber-tip based on the metallic metasurface and the multimode fiber (MMF) alleviates the limitation of the inevitable large sensing size caused by fiber side wall functionalization. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based on metasurface on the fiber-tip provides a promising way to manipulate and interrogate the transmitted and reflection light in sub-wavelength range. Combining the advantages of plasmonic fiber-tip and magnetic fluid, a compact magnetic field fiber-optic sensor is proposed and verified by experiments. The developed fiber-optic magnetic field sensor has linear response and high magnetic strength sensitivity of 0.532 nm/mT over a range of 0-20 mT. In addition, the results also prove the feasibility of pseudo-vector magnetic field sensing.

Abstract:A novel and compact magnetic field sensor based on a tapered photonic crystal fiber (PCF) coated with ferrofluid is proposed. It consists of a section of tapered PCF, which is spliced between two single-mode fibers with a waist diameter of 24 mu m. The ferrofluid is filled in the capillary to coat the PCF taper. Experimentally, the refractive index (RI) of the ferrofluid increased under increasing magnetic field intensity (H) with a sensitivity of 4 x 10(-5) RIU/Gs and the RI sensitivity in the evanescent field is 401 nm/RIU. Therefore, the interference spectrum is shifted as the change of H ranged from 100 to 600 Gs with a sensitivity of 16.04 pm/Gs and resolution of 0.62 Gs. The proposed magnetic field sensor is attractive due to its compact size, low cost, and immunity to electromagnetic interference beyond what conventional magnetic field sensors can offer.
