Abstract:Determination of the chemical composition of cement and ratio values of clinker plays an important role in cement plants as part of the optimal process control and product quality evaluation. In the present paper, a laboratory laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) apparatus mainly comprising a sealed optical module and an analysis chamber has been designed for possible application in cement plants for on-site quality analysis of cement. Emphasis is placed on the structure and operation of the LIBS apparatus, the sealed optical path, the temperature controlled spectrometer, the sample holder, the proper calibration model established for minimizing the matrix effects, and a correction method proposed for overcoming the 'drift' obstacle. Good agreement has been found between the laboratory measurement results from the LIBS method and those from the traditional method. The absolute measurement errors presented here for oxides analysis are within 0.5%, while those of ratio values are in the range of 0.02 to 0.05. According to the obtained results, this laboratory LIBS apparatus is capable of performing reliable and accurate, composition and proximate analysis of cement and is suitable for application in cement plants.

Abstract:The nanoparticle-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (NELIBS) technique has attracted much attention because of its significant spectral enhancement as well as the reduction of spectral noise. More NELIBS studies have focused on the effect of nanoparticles on spectral intensity and the optimization of experiments. NELIBS has not been studied for the detection of cement raw materials components and the repeatability of quantitative analysis. In this paper, the effect of NELIBS on the spectral quality as well as the repeatability of the quantitative analysis of cement raw materials is investigated. The effects of different AuNPs particle sizes and volumes on LIBS brought about by pre-ablation were compared and modeled for quantitative analysis. The results showed that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of NELIBS spectra after pre-ablation was improved from 2.72 to 7.81, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) of CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 in cement raw materials were reduced by 47%, 30%, 31%, and 33%, respectively. In summary, this paper provides a comprehensive discussion and comparison of AuNPS versus LIBS for quantitative analysis of cement raw materials components, and also provides a new solution for quantitative analysis of cement raw materials.

Quantitative Analysis of Cu in Cement by Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:In order to detect copper in the cement quantitatively, on the basis of the characteristics of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy method, the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy system was set up. The standard addition method for the calibration method was adopted and five samples of cement containing different content of copper were made. According to the LIBS spectra, 213. 598 nm and 219. 958 nm were chosen as analysis lines. The spectrum data were preprocessed by Savitz-ky-Golary convolution smoothing method, and the fitting curves by Guass, Lorentz and Voigt fitting were compared. The calibration curves were set up by single variable linear fitting method. The Ad-just R-Square of calibration curves of 213 . 598 nm and 219 . 958 nm are 0 . 9948 and 0 . 9864 re-spectively and the average relative errors are 3 . 20% and 5 . 78%. The results show that the accura-cy of 213. 598 nm as the analysis line is better than 213. 598 nm for copper detection. This tech-nique is reasonable to quantitatively analysis the metal elements in the cement by LIBS.
Calibration Curve and Support Vector Regression Methods Applied for Quantification of Cement Raw Meal Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a qualitative and quantitative analytical technique with great potential in the cement industrial analysis. Calibration curve (CC) and support vector regression (SVR) methods coupled with LIBS technology were applied for the quantification of three types of cement raw meal samples to compare their analytical concentration range and the ability to reduce matrix effects, respectively. To reduce the effects of fluctuations of the pulse-to-pulse, the unstable ablation and improve the reproducibility, all of the analysis line intensities were normalized on a per-detector basis. The prediction results of the elements of interest in the three types of samples, Ca, Si, Fe, Al, Mg, Na, K and Ti, were compared with the results of the wet chemical analysis. The average relative error (ARE), relative standard deviation (RSD) and root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) were employed to investigate and evaluate the prediction accuracy and stability of the two prediction methods. The maximum average ARE of the CC and SVR methods is 34.62% instead of 6.13%, RSD is 40.89% instead of 7.60% and RMSEP is 1.34% instead of 0.43%. The results show that SVR method can accurately analyze samples within a wider concentration range and reduce the matrix effects, and LIBS coupled with it for a rapid, stable and accurate quantification of different types of cement raw meal samples is promising.
Quantitative analysis of chlorine in cement pastes based on collinear dual-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:On-line detection of chlorine in cement is the key to evaluate the corrosion of the reinforced concrete inside the structure. A collinear dual-pulse LIBS system based on two nanosecond lasers with a total energy of 30 mJ is developed to detect the chlorine in cement. The key parameters of the dual-pulse LIBS system are optimized to improve the detection sensitivity of trace chlorine element in cement pastes, and the optimal values of the parameters are obtained to be: 4 L/min helium gas flow rate, 2000 ns inter-pulse delay, 800 ns gate delay, 19 mJ/11 mJ pulse energy ratio, and 42.8 mm lens-to-sample distance. After the optimization of the dual-pulse system, the signal-to-noise ratio of the trace chlorine emission line at 837.6 nm has been improved from 1.75 to 2.68 for a sample containing 0.706 wt% chlorine. The temperatures of plasma are obtained based on Saha-Boltzmann plot for exploring the plasma radiation features in the dual-pulse system. The results show that the plasma temperature which is influenced by laser irradiance and parameters of the double pulse configuration, is closely related to the signal-to-noise ratio of chlorine spectrum line. Sixteen standard cement pastes made from a series of sodium chloride solutions with various concentration are used for LIBS calibration. Two calibration methods including internal standardization and partial least squares regression are adopted for determining chlorine concentrations within a series of standard cement pastes, and the limit of detection based on internal standardization model is calculated to be 103.4 ppm. The prediction performance of IS and PLSR is evaluated by Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation with the root mean square error of calibration of 0.0910 and 0.0859, respectively.

Abstract:The working principle of the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) is interpreted.A LIBS experimental setup is developed based on Nd∶YAG laser and CCD grating spectrometer.Several experiments were carried out to study the effect of laser pulse energy,delay time and pressure.Atomic spectra was obtained using lower pulse energy;The best S/N could be realized by adjusting the delay time;Some samples could be induced to breakdown without strong continuum background;Emission signal with good S/N could be obtained at low pressure(5×10-5Pa),but the signal intensity was lower than at air pressure.The standard atomic spectra could be obtained by carrying out LIBS analysis of pure samples in the sample chamber,and the elemental recognition of unknown samples could be realized by comparing their atomic spectra with the standard spectra,in which the system recognition error was avoided.

Abstract:The ingress of chloride can lead to the pitting corrosion of rebars, causing severe damage to concrete structures during service. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been demonstrated as an in-situ and reliable technique that can present cement distribution in concrete profiles, where the chlorine concentration is severely limited in the China standard. Dual-pulse LIBS has frequently been reported to enhance plasma emission. The evolution of the induced plasma generated from cement pastes is studied using an optical diagnostic system coupled with fast photography, shadowgraph, and optical emission spectroscopy, which can simultaneously record time-resolved physical information, including plasma morphology, shockwave propagation, and spatially resolved emission spectra in both single-pulse and dual-pulse configurations. The transition of the action mechanism of the second laser pulse from "initial plasma reheating" to "ablation enhancement" is demonstrated, which is responsible for the change in the plasma morphology from hemispherical to umbrella-shaped. It is observed that the new shockwave formed inside the initial shockwave is produced by the secondary ablation, which propagates faster, and shockwave fusion occurs when it approaches the initial shockwave. The spatially resolved Cl I emission at 837.59 nm is acquired, and the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) closely follows the profile of plasma temperature. The maximum SBR (> 3.0) can be accessed in the region where the plasma temperature reaches its peak (> 9200 K). Under the excitation of dual pulse with an inter-pulse delay of 200 ns, the Cl I emission can be clearly identified in the sample with a chlorine concentration of 0.252 wt% close to the critical value (0.2 wt% in the China standard), and a calibration curve is constructed with limit of detection ( LOD ) estimated to be 1930 ppm (dual pulse) versus 2550 ppm (single pulse).

Abstract:In recent years, with the increase in environmental awareness, people have become more and more concerned about the effectiveness with which coal burns. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become an important way of coal elemental analysis because of its uncomplicated sample handling, remote sensing capability, and superior sensitivity in identifying a wide range of elements, including both major and minor constituents, down to trace levels. However, the complexity of its mechanism of action, the experimental environmental factors, and the presence of matrix effects in its measurement spectrum have affected the measurement accuracy. In this paper, on the basis of introducing the experimental process and principle of LIBS, we summarize and analyze the influence of each factor on the LIBS detection medium, summarize the mainstream model analysis algorithms, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each model. While summarizing the LIBS in media detection in recent years, it aims to provide strong support and guidance for subsequent more in-depth exploration and research.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used to detect atomic species in various environments. The quantitative analysis (C, H, O, N and S) of representative coal samples are being carried out with LIBS, and the effects of particle size are analyzed. A powerful pulse Nd:YAG laser is focused on the coal sample at atmosphere pressure, and the emission spectra from laser-induced plasmas are measured by time-resolved spectroscopy, and the intensity of analyzed spectral lines is obtained through observing the laser plasma with a delay time of 0.4 μs. The experimental results show that the slope of calibration curve is nearly 1 when the concentration of the analyzed element is relatively low, and the slope of curve is nearly 0.5 when the concentration of C is higher than other elements. In addition, using the calibration-free model without self-absorption effect, the results show that the decreasing of particle size leads to an increase of the plasma temperature.

Abstract:This contribution presents the applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of several samples such as geological ores, cement, and industrial materials. A combination of LIBS with the laser ablation time‒of‒flight mass spectrometer (LA-TOF-MS) assists in elemental quantification and isotopic abundance analysis. Different elemental components such as aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), rubidium (Rb), silicon (Si), strontium (Sr), and titanium (Ti) in cement varieties, as well as rare earth metals, lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), and neodymium (Nd) in geological ore samples, and cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and molybdenum (Mo) in industrial standard material samples, have been precisely identified and their relative weight percentages estimated using CF-LIBS and LA-TOF-MS diagnostic techniques. To ensure the reliability of LIBS for the elemental analysis of industrial materials, a comparative study with other compatible techniques, including EDX, PIXE, and XRF, utilizing different excitation sources is presented. The results suggest that LIBS offers unique advantages, enabling rapid elemental analysis in circumstances where other techniques may face certain limitations.

Abstract:Measurement of coal carbon content using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is limited by its low precision and accuracy. A modified spectrum standardization method was proposed to achieve both reproducible and accurate results for the quantitative analysis of carbon content in coal using LIBS. The proposed method used the molecular emissions of diatomic carbon (C 2 ) and cyanide (CN) to compensate for the diminution of atomic carbon emissions in high volatile content coal samples caused by matrix effect. The compensated carbon line intensities were further converted into an assumed standard state with standard plasma temperature, electron number density, and total number density of carbon, under which the carbon line intensity is proportional to its concentration in the coal samples. To obtain better compensation for fluctuations of total carbon number density, the segmental spectral area was used and an iterative algorithm was applied that is different from our previous spectrum standardization calculations. The modified spectrum standardization model was applied to the measurement of carbon content in 24 bituminous coal samples. The results demonstrate that the proposed method has superior performance over the generally applied normalization methods. The average relative standard deviation was 3.21%, the coefficient of determination was 0.90, the root mean square error of prediction was 2.24%, and the average maximum relative error for the modified model was 12.18%, showing an overall improvement over the corresponding values for the normalization with segmental spectrum area, 6.00%, 0.75, 3.77%, and 15.40%, respectively.
An Echellograms-Based Quantitative Analysis Method of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:The high-resolution broadband LIBS spectrum is typically acquired using an echelle spectrometer and array detectors. However, the full frame (i.e., echellogram) captured by detector is commonly converted to 1D spectrum for the further analysis, which would both limit the detection speed of LIBS and potentially degenerate the analytical performance. In this work, we propose an echellograms-based analysis method for the quantification of minor metal elements in steel. Two metal elements, Mn and Ti, are chosen to validate the feasibility of the analytical method. The LASSO algorithm is used to build the multivariate regression model using LIBS spectra and echellograms respectively. The analytical performance obtained with the echellograms-based model is compared with that of spectra-based model. The efficiency of the echellograms-based quantitative analysis method is demonstrated with better prediction accuracy and precision. Notably, the echellogram-based regression model involves only tens to thousands of pixels from the echellogram, which can be selectively read out using a CMOS detector. The combination of echellogram-based quantitative analysis method and CMOS detector provides new ideas for high-frequency LIBS detection.

Abstract:In the field of quantitative analysis utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), ensuring the stability and precision of the technique is a crucial consideration. This is particularly pertinent for certain engineering applications, where utilizing electric translation stages for sample scanning is not feasible. In this study, a compact optical scanning LIBS analysis system was developed using a deflection mirror design to replace the translation platform. The system achieved rapid scanning and precise analysis, with a total weight of less than 5 kg. Moreover, to quantitatively analyze Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, and other elements in various alloy steels, a general method for selecting spectral analysis line combination was proposed. The calibration model was established utilizing 16 alloy steel samples, and its validity was assessed through a verification set of seven samples (with element content ranging from 0.021 to 2.0 wt%). The results indicate a high degree of accuracy. The calibration model determination coefficients ( ) for Mn, Ni, Cr, and Cu elements exceeded 0.99. The root-mean-square error of validation (RMSEV) was less than 0.05, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was not more than 4%. Additionally, the relative prediction errors for Mn range from 2.98% to 67.44%, for Ni range from 0.57% to 15.93%, for Cr range from 3.91% to 55.56%, and for Cu range from 0.95% to 38.1%.

Abstract:Abstract Although laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), as a fast on-line analysis technology, has great potential and competitiveness in the analysis of chemical composition and proximate analysis results of coal in thermal power plants, the measurement repeatability of LIBS needs to be further improved due to the difficulty in controlling the stability of the generated plasmas at present. In this paper, we propose a novel x-ray fluorescence (XRF) assisted LIBS method for high repeatability analysis of coal quality, which not only inherits the ability of LIBS to directly analyze organic elements such as C and H in coal, but also uses XRF to make up for the lack of stability of LIBS in determining other inorganic ash-forming elements. With the combination of elemental lines in LIBS and XRF spectra, the principal component analysis and the partial least squares are used to establish the prediction model and perform multi-elemental and proximate analysis of coal. Quantitative analysis results show that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of C is 0.15%, the RSDs of other elements are less than 4%, and the standard deviations of calorific value, ash content, sulfur content and volatile matter are 0.11 MJ kg −1 , 0.17%, 0.79% and 0.41% respectively, indicating that the method has good repeatability in determination of coal quality. This work is helpful to accelerate the development of LIBS in the field of rapid measurement of coal entering the power plant and on-line monitoring of coal entering the furnace.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been regarded as a future superstar for chemical analysis for years due to its unique features such as little or no sample preparation, remote sensing, and fast and multi-element analysis. Chinese LIBS community is one of the most dynamically developing communities in the World. The aim of the work is to inspect what have been done in China for LIBS development and, based on the understanding of the overall status, to identify the challenges and opportunities for the future development. In this paper, the scientific contributions from Chinese LIBS community are reviewed for the following four aspects: fundamentals, instrumentation, data processing and modeling, and applications; and the driving force of LIBS development in China is analyzed, the critical issues for successful LIBS application are discussed, and in our opinion, the potential direction to improve the technology and to realize large scale commercialization in China is proposed.
Parametric Study of Spot Size and Multi-Elemental Quantification of Geomaterials under Complex Matrix Conditions Using Fiber-Optic Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has provided an optional access method to analyze multiple components of geomaterials with the advantages of rapid detection and minimal damage and preprocessing of samples compared with other conventional analytical methods. A fiber-optic LIBS (FO-LIBS) system with a compact laser probe was established to analyze ten different sediment samples, with Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, Mn, V, and Cr successfully detected. The spectra from the different samples are quite different due to matrix effects, and the spot size has a great influence on both plasma evolution and emission spectra for the same sample. The laser irradiance decreased from 1.382 to 0.855 GW/cm(2) with increasing the spot diameter from 480 to 610 mu m as the spectral fluctuation was gradually aggravated. Internal standardization (IS) was utilized to decline the spectral fluctuations caused by the spot size and matrix effects for the quantification of multiple elements. By adopting the most suitable combinations of emission lines, the fluctuation of emission lines caused by the spot size was also limited with a relative standard deviation lower than 30%. The R-2 of all the calibration curves was higher than 0.9 with the major element Si out of the detection range and spectra mixed at different spot sizes, which outperformed normalization by the whole spectrum. Two multi-variate chemometric methods, including partial least squares regression and support vector regression, were also applied to establish quantitative models for the sediments. It was found that three methods provided similar prediction results, while IS could establish a more robust calibration model that was less sensitive to spot size. This study also demonstrated that FO-LIBS has the potential to quantitatively analyze the chemical compositions of geomaterials combined with IS and machine learning.
