Abstract:The experimental determination of capillary pressure drainage curves at the pore scale is of vital importance for the mapping of reservoir fluid distribution. To fully characterize capillary drainage in a complex pore space, we design a differential imaging-based porous plate (DIPP) method using X-ray microtomography. For an exemplar mm-scale laminated sandstone microcore with a porous plate, we quantify the displacement from resolvable macropores and subresolution micropores. Nitrogen (N2) was injected as the nonwetting phase at a constant pressure while the porous plate prevented its escape. The measured porosity and capillary pressure at the imaged saturations agree well with helium measurements and experiments on larger core samples, while providing a pore-scale explanation of the fluid distribution. We observed that the majority of the brine was displaced by N2 in macropores at low capillary pressures, followed by a further brine displacement in micropores when capillary pressure increases. Furthermore, we were able to discern that brine predominantly remained within the subresolution micropores, such as regions of fine lamination. The capillary pressure curve for pressures ranging from 0 to 1151 kPa is provided from the image analysis compares well with the conventional porous plate method for a cm-scale core but was conducted over a period of 10 days rather than up to few months with the conventional porous plate method. Overall, we demonstrate the capability of our method to provide quantitative information on twophase saturation in heterogeneous core samples for a wide range of capillary pressures even at scales smaller than the micro-CT resolution.

Abstract:Gravity drainage characteristics are important to improve our understanding of gas–liquid or liquid–liquid two-phase flow in porous media. Stable or unstable displacement fronts that controlled by the capillary force, viscous force, gravitational force, etc., are relevant features of immiscible two-phase flow. In this paper, three dimensionless parameters, namely, the gravity number, the capillary number and the Bond number, were used to describe the effect of the above mentioned forces on two-phase drainage features, including the displacement front and final displacing-phase saturation. A series of experiments on the downward displacement of a viscous fluid by a less viscous fluid in a vertical vessel that is filled with quartz beads are performed by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The experimental results indicate that the wetting properties at both high and low capillary numbers exert remarkable control on the fluid displacement. When the contact angle is lower than 90°, i.e., the displaced phase is the wetting phase, the average velocity Vf of the interface of the two phases (displacement front velocity) is observably lower than when the displaced phase is the non-wetting phase (contact angle higher than 90°). The results show that a fingering phenomenon occurs when the gravity number G is less than the critical gravity number G’=Δμ/μg. Moreover, the higher Bond number results in higher final displacing-phase saturation, whereas the capillary number has an opposite effect.

Abstract:Spontaneous imbibition plays an important role in many subsurface and industrial applications. Unveiling pore-scale wetting dynamics, and particularly its upscaling to the Darcy model, are still unresolved. We conduct image-based pore-network modeling of cocurrent spontaneous imbibition and the corresponding quasi-static imbibition in homogeneous sintered glass beads and heterogeneous Estaillades carbonate. We find that pore-scale heterogeneity significantly influences entrapment of the nonwetting fluid, which in Estaillades is mainly because of the poor connectivity of pores. We show that wetting dynamics significantly deviates capillary pressure and relative permeability away from their quasi-static counterparts. Moreover, we propose a non-equilibrium model for wetting permeability that well incorporates flow dynamics. We implement the non-equilibrium model into two-phase Darcy modeling of a 10 cm long medium. Sharp wetting fronts are numerically predicted, which are in good agreement with experimental observations. Our studies provide insights into developing a two-phase imbibition model with measurable material properties.

Abstract:Whether flowback bottom water can form effective structural traps has a significant effect on the effective sequestration of injected supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) in anticline reservoirs. An in-depth core flooding experiment was conducted to investigate the flow behavior characteristics of SC-CO2 in a heterogeneous tight glutenite sample. Three NMR/MRI pulse sequences (CPMG, GR-HSE and SE-SPI) were used to monitor the flooding processes. The CPMG pulse sequence provides T2 spectra for the whole sample and the results show that the injected fluid always displaces the initial existing fluid from the larger macropores first. However, as water could form thin films on the pore surfaces or isolated beads in the middle of pores, the T2 spectra does not truly reflect the water distribution in different size pores during the drainage and imbibition processes. The GR-HSE sequence gives the saturation profiles as a function of lateral position along the core allowing the migration front of fluid along the flooding direction to be determined. These profiles give direct evidence of the different influence of viscosity difference between SC-CO2 and water causing on heterogeneity-induced fingering during the drainage and imbibition process. During the imbibition process, the extent of viscous fingering is reduced significantly. The SE-SPI sequence shows the T2 spectrum for individual layers and provide a new perspective to determine the partial wettability of these layers. MRI imaging shows that the drainage and imbibition processes occurred mainly in the matrix, while the gravels were largely devoid of fluids. The displacement efficiency during drainage and imbibition processes (calculated by averaging the values obtained from the CPMG and GR-HSE sequences) are 65.6% and 92.3%, respectively.

Abstract:The study of formation and dissociation of CO2 hydrate in porous media was characterized by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system in in situ conditions. This work simulated porous media by using glass beads of uniform size. The growth and dissociation habit of CO2 hydrate was observed under different temperature and pressure conditions. The induction time and the hydrate saturation during the growth and dissociation process in different sizes of porous media were obtained by using the MRI signal intensity. The results indicate that hydrate growth rate and the induction time are affected by the size of porous media, pressure, and degree of supercooling. There are three hydrate growth stages, i.e., initial growth stage, rapid growth stage and steady stage. In this study, the CO2 hydrate forms preferentially at the surface of vessel and then gradually grows inward. The hydrate tends to cement the glass beads together and occupies the pore gradually. As the hydrate decomposes gradually, the dissociation rate increases to the maximum and then decreases to zero.

Abstract:The study of immiscible fluid displacement between aqueous-phase liquids and non-aqueous-phase liquids in porous media is of great importance to oil recovery, groundwater contamination, and underground pollutant migration. Moreover, the attendant viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces are essential to describing the two-phase flows. In this study, magnetic resonance imaging was used to experimentally examine the detailed effects of the viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces on water–oil flows through a vertical straight capillary, bifurcate channel, and monolayered glass-bead pack. Water flooding experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure and 37.8°C, and the evolution of the distribution and saturation of the oil as well as the characteristics of the two-phase flow were investigated and analyzed. The results showed that the flow paths, i.e., the fingers of the displacing phase, during the immiscible displacement in the porous medium were determined by the viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces as well as the sizes of the pores and throats. The experimental results afford a fundamental understanding of immiscible fluid displacement in a porous medium.

Abstract:Entrapment of the non-wetting phase in porous media has been observed in a variety of fields such as petroleum engineering, geological storage of carbon dioxide, and remediation of ground water. We investigated gas trapping in porous media from a microscopic point of view. High-resolution, three-dimensional images of pore structure and trapped gas bubbles in Berea sandstones were obtained using a micro-focused X-ray CT scanner. We used vertical and horizontal Berea sandstone cores, 8 mm in diameter and 15 mm long. Based on the three-dimensional image analysis, the statistical distribution of the trapped gas volume was estimated. Trapped bubbles have a pore-network scale size and distribute over several pores. In the case of the vertical core, the porosity fluctuates along the flow direction due to the layered structure. The residual gas saturation also fluctuates with porosity along the flow direction. The higher gas saturation in porous layers at the end of gas injection results in a higher trapped gas saturation compared to dense layers. On the other hand, in dense layers the gas saturation at the end of gas injection is almost the same as the residual gas saturation. Therefore, most of the gas injected into the dense layers would be trapped. In the case of horizontal core, the gas saturation at the irreducible water condition is lower than that for the vertical core, because the injected gas selectively passes through the more permeable layers. However, the residual gas saturation is 29.2% for the horizontal core, which is comparable with that for the vertical core (30.9%). Finally, the effect of capillary number on stability of trapped gas bubbles has been estimated. Trapped gas bubbles are stable against the increased flow rate up to a capillary number of 1.0 x10(-5). Abstract:We applied three-dimensional X-ray microtomography to image a capillary drainage process (0-1000 kPa) in a cm-scale heterogeneous laminated sandstone containing three distinct regions with different pore sizes to study the capillary pressure. We used differential imaging to distinguish solid, macro pore and five levels of sub-resolution pore phases associated with each region. The brine saturation distribution was computed based on average CT values. The non-wetting phase displaced the wetting phase in order of pore size and connectivity. The drainage capillary pressure in the highly heterogeneous rock was dependent on the capillary pressures in the individual regions as well as distance to the boundary between regions. The complex capillary pressure distribution has important implications for accurate water saturation estimation, gas and/or oil migration and the capillary rise of water in heterogeneous aquifers.

Abstract:CO2 flooding is used extensively as a commercial process for enhanced oil recovery. In this study, the visualization of CO2 flooding in immiscible and miscible displacements in a high-pressure condition was studied using a 400 MHz MRI system. For CO2 immiscible displacement, the phenomenon of CO2 channelling or fingering was obviously due to the difference in fluid viscosities and densities. Thus, the sweep efficiency was small, and the final residual oil saturation was 37.2%. For CO2 miscible displacement, the results showed that pistonlike displacement occurred, and the phenomenon of the miscible regions and CO2 front was obvious. The viscous fingering and gravity override caused by the low viscosity and density of the gas were restrained effectively, and the velocity of the CO2 front was uniform. The sweep efficiency was high, and the final residual oil saturation was 13.5%, indicating that CO2 miscible displacement could recover more oil compared with CO2 immiscible displacement. Finally, the average velocity of the CO2 front was evaluated by analyzing the oil saturation profile. A special core analysis method was applied to in situ oil saturation data to directly evaluate the effect of viscosity, buoyancy, and capillary pressure on CO2 miscible displacement.

Abstract:The study of fluid absorption, particularly that of water, into nanoporous materials has garnered increasing attention in the last decades across a broad range of disciplines. However, most investigation approaches to probe such behaviors are limited by characterization conditions. In this study, a combined MRI and MAS NMR method was used to study a nanoporous silica glass to acquire information about its structural framework and interactions with confined water. Specifically, MRI was used for a quantitative analysis of water extent. While MAS NMR techniques provided structural information of silicate materials, including interactive surface area and framework packing. Analysis of water spin‐spin relaxation times (T2) suggested differences in water confinement within the characterized framework. Subsequent unsuccessful delivery of paramagnetic molecule into the pores enabled a quantitative assessment of the dimensions that "bottleneck" the pores. Finally, pore sizes were derived from the molecular size, density function theory (DFT) simulation and characterizations on standard samples. Our result matches with Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller (BET) analysis.. The use of a paramagnetic probe for pore size determination introduces a new approach of characterization in the liquid phase, offering an alternative to the conventional BET analysis that uses gas molecule as probes.

Abstract:The microstructure and growth habit of hydrates in pore space significantly affects the physical and chemical properties of hydrates. It is generally acknowledged that there are four pore-scale hydrate distributions. They are floating, supporting, coating and cementing. In this paper, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology is proposed for monitoring and analyzing the microstructure and growth habit of tetrahydrofuran hydrate and carbon dioxide hydrate in pore space. The growth process of hydrates was in-situ directly observed. Through the images acquired from the MRI, it was found that the tetrahydrofuran hydrate formation starts from the grain surface and then growing to occupy the room in between these grains gradually in porous media . The cementing microstructure of tetrahydrofuran hydrate in pore space was observed by using MRI. Ho wever, the growth of the carbon dioxide hydrate was influenced by the dissolved quantity of the carbon dioxide in the water.

Abstract:In this study, the displacement processes were observed as gaseous or supercritical CO(2) was injected into n-decane-saturated glass beads packs using a 400-MHz magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. Two-dimensional images of oil distribution in the vertical median section were obtained using a spin-echo pulse sequence. Gas channeling and viscous fingering appeared obviously in immiscible gaseous CO(2) displacement. A piston-like displacement front was detected in miscible supercritical CO(2) displacement that provided high sweep efficiency. MRI images were processed with image intensity analysis methods to obtain the saturation profiles. Final oil residual saturations and displacement coefficients were also estimated using this imaging intensity analysis. It was proved that miscible displacement can enhance the efficiency of CO(2) displacement notably. Finally, a special coreflood analysis method was applied to estimate the effects of capillary, viscosity and buoyancy based on the obtained saturation data.

Abstract:The water retention Curve (WRC) defines the relationship between matric suction and saturation and is a key function for determining the hydro-mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils. We investigate possible microscopic origins of the water retention behavior of granular soils using both Computed Tomography (CT) experiment and multiphase lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). We conduct a CT experiment on Hamburg sand to obtain its WRC and then run LBM simulations based on the CT grain skeleton. The multiphase LBM simulations capture the hysteresis and pore-scale behaviors of WRC observed in the CT experiment. Using LBM, we observe that the spatial distribution and morphology of gas clusters varies between drainage and imbibition paths and is the underlying source of the hysteresis. During drainage, gas clusters congregate at the grain surface; the local suction increases when gas clusters enter through small pore openings and decreases when gas clusters enter through large pore openings. Whereas, during imbibition, gas clusters disperse in the liquid; the local suction decreases uniformly. Large pores empty first during drainage and small pores fill first during imbibition. The pore-based WRC shows that an increase in pore size causes a decrease in suction during drainage and imbibition, and an increase in hysteresis.

Abstract:Density‐driven convection mixing has been identified to enhance CO 2 trapping in deep saline aquifers storage. In this study, the dynamics of fingering instability and associated mass transfer caused by convection mixing between the movements of miscible analogue fluid pairs are investigated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Two kinds of homogeneous porous media and six kinds of heterogeneous porous media with varying permeability permutations were used at ambient pressure and temperature. In homogeneous porous media, the detail analyses on the data of fingering pattern, finger number and distribution identify that the large finger sizes and high sinking velocities can be developed when the permeability up to 3.3×10 ‐11 m 2 . In heterogeneous porous media, the sand layer first touched by downward fingers plays a dominant role in finger evolution, channeling and fingering convection mechanisms were found among these cases. Moreover, the dissolution rate characterized by Sherwood number (Sh m ) (enhance or inhibit fluid mixing, depending on the layout of the sand layer) was found to be independent of the local convection dissolution, such as vortex flow and finger splitting at the sand boundary with mutation permeability (enhanced fluid mixing, promoting CO 2 dissolution in carbon storage). Finally, the total CO 2 dissolution rate Sh m in all cases was compared, Sh m are at a range of 970 to 5079 in homogeneous porous media, while are 190 to 688 in heterogeneous porous media. In Situ Characterization of Three-Phase Flow in Mixed-Wet Porous Media Using Synchrotron Imaging

Abstract:We use fast synchrotron X-ray microtomography to understand three-phase flow in mixed-wet porous media to design either enhanced permeability or capillary trapping. The dynamics of these phenomena are of key importance in subsurface hydrology, carbon dioxide storage, oil recovery, food and drug manufacturing, and chemical reactors. We study the dynamics of a water-gas-water injection sequence in a mixed-wet carbonate rock. During the initial waterflooding, water displaced oil from pores of all size, indicating a mixed-wet system with local contact angles both above and below90 degrees. When gas was injected, gas displaced oil preferentially with negligible displacement of water. This behavior is explained in terms of the gas pressure needed for invasion. Overall, gas behaved as the most nonwetting phase with oil as the most wetting phase; however, pores of all size were occupied by oil, water, and gas, as a signature of mixed-wet media. Thick oil wetting layers were observed, which increased oil connectivity and facilitated its flow during gas injection. A chase waterflooding resulted in additional oil flow, while gas was trapped by oil and water. Furthermore, we quantified the evolution of the surface areas and both Gaussian and the total curvature, from which capillary pressure could be estimated. These quantities are related to the Minkowski functionals which quantify the degree of connectivity and trapping. The combination of water and gas injection, under mixed-wet immiscible conditions, leads to both favorable oil flow and significant trapping of gas, which is advantageous for storage applications.
Quantitative study of density-driven convection mass transfer in porous media by MRI

Abstract:CO2 geologic storage in deep saline aquifers is a promising technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain the pace of economic development. The dissolution and convection of CO2 injected into brines are the primary trapping mechanisms to enhance storage efficiency and provide long-term storage security. The spatial mass transfer characteristics of convection in porous media remain poorly understood. In this study, two kinds of analogous fluid pairs were used as the equivalents of CO2-saturated brine and in situ brine. Density-driven convection experiments using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology in heterogeneous porous media were performed at various stages, including the diffusion stage, the unstable trigger stage and the convection development stage. Combined with the spatial evolution of the fingers and the change in MRI mean intensity, the local fluid concentration and overall mass transfer behavior could be quantified. Physical quantities associated with mass transfer by convection, such as the mixing layer thickness and scalar dissipation rate at the diffusion stages, the onset time at the unstable trigger stage, the average velocity of the front finger, the finger number, the transverse concentration gradient of the finger, and the sweep area of the finger at the convection development stage, were also analyzed systematically. We found that convective mixing substantially promotes mass transfer over pure diffusion, and the dissolution rate can be further enhanced by improving the injection method at each stage. The range of Ra in this study covers most CO2 capture and storage (CCS) sites and can provide basic data for engineering applications.

Abstract:Capillary imbibition in variably saturated porous media is important in defining displacement processes and transport in the vadose zone and in low-permeability barriers and reservoirs. Nonintrusive imaging in real time offers the potential to examine critical impacts of heterogeneity and surface properties on imbibition dynamics. Neutron radiography is applied as a powerful imaging tool to observe temporal changes in the spatial distribution of water in porous materials. We analyze water imbibition in both homogeneous and heterogeneous low-permeability sandstones. Dynamic observations of the advance of the imbibition front with time are compared with characterizations of microstructure (via high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT)), pore size distribution (Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry), and permeability of the contrasting samples. We use an automated method to detect the progress of wetting front with time and link this to square-root-of-time progress. These data are used to estimate the effect of microstructure on water sorptivity from a modified Lucas-Washburn equation. Moreover, a model is established to calculate the maximum capillary diameter by modifying the Hagen-Poiseuille and Young-Laplace equations based on fractal theory. Comparing the calculated maximum capillary diameter with the maximum pore diameter (from high-resolution CT) shows congruence between the two independent methods for the homogeneous silty sandstone but less effectively for the heterogeneous sandstone. Finally, we use these data to link observed response with the physical characteristics of the contrasting media-homogeneous versus heterogeneous-and to demonstrate the sensitivity of sorptivity expressly to tortuosity rather than porosity in low-permeability sandstones.
Pore-scale Imaging of Displacement Patterns in an Altered-Wettability Carbonate

Abstract:High-resolution X-ray imaging combined with a steady-state flow experiment is used to demonstrate how pore-scale displacement affects macroscopic properties in an altered-wettability microporous carbonate, where porosity and fluid saturation can be directly obtained from the grey-scale micro-CT images. The resolvable macro pores are largely oil-wet with an average thermodynamic contact angle of 120°. The pore-by-pore analysis shows locally either oil or brine almost fully occupied the macro pores, with some oil displacement in the micro-porosity. We observed a typical oil-wet behaviour consistent with the contact angle measurement. The brine tended to occupy the larger macro pores, leading to a higher brine relative permeability, lower residual oil saturation, than under water-wet conditions and in a mixed-wet sandstone. The capillary pressure was negative and seven times larger in the carbonate than the sandstone, despite having a similar average pore size. These different displacement patterns are principally determined by the difference in wettability.

Abstract:The geometric structure variation of the nonwetting phase (NWP) in porous media plays a critical role in numerous energy-related processes. This work conducted a series of gas/liquid displacements in three rock cores using high resolution x-ray microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), including two sandstones and a Berea core with different pore architectures. The morphological and topological characteristics of NWP were investigated at the pore scale in a full cycle of primary drainage (PD), main imbibition (MI), and main drainage (MD). It is found that roof and distal snap-off occurred during drainage, resulting in nonwetting (NW) singlets and ganglia. These NW bubbles occupied 10%–20% NWP volume. Both throat snap-off and pore snap-off were observed in MI, which generally occur at a single-pore scale. The effect of viscous force is significant even at a capillary dominant displacement. The trapped NWP during PD can be partially or totally displaced in MI through further snap-off events or viscous remobilization. Due to the temporal and spatial scale diversion in pore scale events, the amplitude of pressure drop fluctuations among PD, MI, and MD is different. The significant difference in NWP characteristics between PD and MD is connectivity, thus leading to hysteresis.

Abstract:Spontaneous imbibition has been receiving much attention due to its significance in many subsurface and industrial applications. Unveiling pore-scale wetting dynamics, and particularly its upscaling to the Darcy scale are still unresolved. In this work, we conduct image-based pore-network modeling of cocurrent spontaneous imbibition and the corresponding quasi-static imbibition, in homogeneous sintered glass beads as well as heterogeneous Estaillades. A wide range of viscosity ratios and wettability conditions are taken into account. Based on our pore-scale results, we show the influence of pore-scale heterogeneity on imbibition dynamics and nonwetting entrapment. We elucidate different pore-filling mechanisms in imbibition, which helps us understand wetting dynamics. Most importantly, we develop a non-equilibrium model for relative permeability of the wetting phase, which adequately incorporates wetting dynamics. This is crucial to the final goal of developing a two-phase imbibition model with measurable material properties such as capillary pressure and relative permeability. Finally, we propose some future work on both numerical and experimental verifications of the developed non-equilibrium permeability model.
