Abstract:In this work, fumed silica was compounded with silicone rubber and processed under two different extraction conditions to quantitatively analyze bound rubber for studying filler–rubber interaction. When nanocomposites were treated with toluene at 90 °C under ultrasonic (US) irradiation, physisorbed polymer chains were more substantially removed when compared to the traditional room temperature (RT) extraction method. The bound rubber fraction of silicone rubber filled with 40 phr of silica was 32.85% by RT treatment, while the US-treated one was reduced to 6.20%. A thin layer of tightly bound rubber adsorbed on the silica surface could be obtained by US treatment as observed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Low-field 1H NMR results confirmed that the obtained tightly bound rubber chains were strongly constrained. The attenuated total reflectance-infrared spectra showed that the formation of tightly bound rubber caused redshift of the Si–O–Si characteristic peaks of silica, and the obtained tightly bound rubber has lower total surface energy than the rubber matrix, indicating the formation of a more stable structure. The reagglomeration potential energy of silica during the curing process was significantly reduced due to the presence of the bound rubber layer. In addition, the amount of tightly bound rubber is mainly related to the surface physical and chemical properties of silica and is less affected by the concentration. Fumed silica tends to form nanofiller networks in rubber that are woven of multiple fillers entangled with bound rubber chains to reinforce the rubber. Therefore, fillers with higher bound rubber content and a better-dispersed aggregate structure in the rubber could more significantly enhance the physical properties of nanocomposites.

Abstract:Factors affecting reinforcement of high temperature vulcanizates were investigated using(interfacial) bound rubber samples of silicon rubber reinforced by fumed silica nanoparticles with different surface properties.Its interfacial action was analyzed by field emission scanning electron micrographs.Network of SiO_2 nanoparticles formed the framework of the three-dimensional structure of bound rubber;the best reinforcement for silicon rubber was achieved using SiO_2 nanoparticles with the highest structural performance.The largest effective reinforcement volume and best reinforcement would be achieved with a SiO_2 filler content of 0.26~0.29(mass fraction) and/or 1.1 to 1.4 OH groups.

Abstract:Although the reinforcing effect of fumed silica on silicone rubber is always better than that of precipitated silica, their enhancement mechanism is still controversial due to the cognitive defects of the interface effect and filler network effect of polymer nanocomposites with the limited experimental study. Herein, significant entanglement network structure differences were revealed in the fumed and precipitated silica-filled phenyl silicone rubber by removing the physisorbed rubber gradually via 90 °C-ultrasonic solvent extraction method, which eventually obtained tightly bound rubber to explain filler-rubber interaction. The silica wrapped by tightly bound rubber was observed by SEM and TEM, where fumed silica is entangled with tightly bound rubber to robust dendritic structure, while precipitated silica is entangled with tightly bound rubber to the irregular agglomerate structure. Low-field 1 H NMR confirmed that the mobility of the tightly bound rubber was significantly lower than loosely bound and free rubber. Furthermore, during the US treatment, the Si–O–Si infrared peaks of fumed silica-filled rubber exhibited "blueshift-redshift-blueshift" while the precipitated silica one only "blueshift" appears, which directly confirmed that different nanoporous structures of nanofiller induced diversity of filler-rubber entanglement network. The tightly bound rubber of precipitated silica (16.71%) was much more than that of fumed silica (3.72%) (40 phr). Although fumed silica adsorbs less tightly bound rubber than precipitated silica, the prominent nanofiller networks formed by fumed silica-rubber greatly enhanced the Payne effect and damping properties. This work can help to deeper understand the formation of the filler-rubber entanglement network and its contribution to the physical properties.

Abstract:Engineered rubbery materials in practical applications usually contain nanoparticle and microscopic short fiber while no theories could describe the viscoelasticity of the compounds varying with these two kinds of fillers. We describe how the linear rheology of natural rubber compounds varies with the loading of precipitated silica, short nylon fiber, or both. We for the first time disclose a filler dimension-dependent hydrodynamic-to-non-hydrodynamic transition by applying the time-concentration superposition principle for accounting for the apparent liquid-to-solid transition related to filler composition and loading and the retarded dynamics of the matrix. A framework for simultaneous solving the reinforcement and dissipation of the multi-component compounds is suggested, providing a new perspective on understanding the filling effect for manufacturing high-performance rubber materials.

Abstract:Rubber blends are widely used for combining the advantages of each rubber component. However, to date, how to determine and distinguish the vulcanization kinetics for each single rubber phase in rubber blends during the co‐vulcanization process is still a challenge. Herein, high‐resolution pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HR PyGC‐MS) was employed for the first time to investigate the vulcanization kinetics of natural rubber (NR) and styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) in NR/SBR blends filled with modified silica (SiO2). The reaction rates of crosslinking of each rubber phase in NR/SBR were calculated, which showed that the crosslinking rates of NR were much lower than those of SBR phase in the unfilled blends and blends filled with unmodified and silane modified silica. Interestingly, the vulcanization rates of NR and SBR phase were approximately same in the vulcanization accelerator modified silica filled blends, showing better co‐vulcanization. In addition, the vulcanization accelerator modified silica was uniformly dispersed and endowed rubber blends with higher mechanical strength compared to the untreated silica. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A torsional strain-controlled rheometer named rubber process analyzer(RPA) was used in dynamic models for measuring the dynamic rheological properties of high-temperature vulcanites(HTV) filled with different fumed silica aggregate at a certain temperature and frequency.And the differences in aggregate network of fumed silica when dispersed on the filled silicone rubber were investigated by RPA.The effect of aggregate network on Payne effect of filled rubber was also studied.The results indicate that filled rubber with high branch aggregate exhibits obvious Payne effect and good reinforcement.Atom force microscope(AFM) indicates that fumed silica with high branch aggregate disperses uniformly showing three-dimension network in high-temperature vulcanites matrix and the particle size of aggregate rubber is approximately 100～200nm.Differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) analysis results indicate that filled rubber gets crystallization and loses elasticity at-42℃.
Effect of graphite and its surface modification on thermal conductivity of silicone rubber

Abstract:Thermal conductive filler with reinforcing agent and crosslinking agent was dispersed in poly(methylvinyl siloxane) using a two-roll mill and the thermal conductive silicone rubber was obtained after curing in a mould. Effects of filler species,content and surface modificaton of graphite and its combination with carbon black on the properties of silicone rubber were systematically investigated. The results showed that at the same filler content the higher the coefficient of themal conductivity of filler was,the better the thermal conductivity of silicone rubber was. The coefficient of thermal conductivity of silicone rubber increased with the increase of the filler content. The surface modification of graphite improved the interfacial compatibility between graphite and silicone rubber,therefore the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of silicone rubber increased. The silicone rubber with the complexed filler of graphite and carbon black having different sizes and morphology exhibited better thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. When the mass ratio of graphite to carbon black was 25/5,silicone rubber had the highest coefficient of thermal conductivity,and the tensile strength and elongation at break increased with increasing the content of carbon black in the complexed filler.

Abstract:The influence of the novel vulcanizing agent, silica supported sulfur monochloride (silica-s-S), comparing with sulfur on the filler-rubber interfacial interaction, mechanical properties and the strain-induced crystallization behaviors were investigated. Due to the formation of interparticle domain, silica-s-S immobilized more rubber chains approaching its surface as the crosslinking points than sulfur vulcanization system. Furthermore, the tightly immobilized rubber chains on silica-s-S surface bring to the significant enhancement of mechanical properties of NR nanocomposites. Meanwhile, the immobilized rubber chains also induced the formation of highest initial crystallinity index and slower decreasing lateral crystallite size with increasing strain ratio. Silica-s-S with more tightly immobilized rubber chains approaching its surface shown better reinforcing effect and strain-induced crystallization behaviors on rubber than that of sulfur vulcanization system.

Abstract:Three activated calcium carbonate (CaCO3) were used as filler for room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber.The dispersion state of CaCO3 in the silicone rubber was compared.The effect of the dispersion state of CaCO3 on the rheological properties of silicone rubber was analyzed.The results showed that,the dispersion state of CaCO3 in the silicone rubber was related to the degree of secondary aggregation,and the storage modulus of silicone rubber would be changed significantly by the aggregation and network structure of the filler.It was found that the dispersion of CaCO3 in silicone rubber could be reflected by temperature scanning test as well.

Abstract:The vulcanizate structure of filled compounds is affected by filler-rubber interactions (FRI) and the chemical crosslink density (CCD) of the matrix rubber. In particular, in filled compounds using a silica-silane system, FRIs due to silica-rubber coupling are a major influencing factor for the vulcanizate structure and physical properties. In this study, the effect of sulfur variation on the vulcanizate structure of silica-filled solution styrene-butadiene rubber compounds using a sulfide-silane coupling agent was studied. The vulcanizate structure according to sulfur variation was quantitatively analyzed using the swelling test and Flory-Rehner and Kraus equations. As the sulfur content increased, both FRI and the CCD increased, and it was confirmed that sulfur variation influenced the silica-rubber coupling efficiency through increased FRI. In addition, field emission scanning electron microscope images showed that increased FRI contributed to improvements in silica dispersion, abrasion resistance, and energy loss characteristics.

Abstract:Two silane coupling agents, bis-(gamma-triethoxysilylpropyl)-tetrasulfide (Si69) and vinyltriethoxysilane (A151), were selected to investigate their effects on structure and properties of silica-filled methyl vinyl silicone rubber (VMQ)/emulsion styrene butadiene rubber (ESBR) composites. The filler-rubber interactions were investigated via bound rubber content and solid-state H-1 low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and the mass ratio of VMQ and ESBR in the rubber-filler gel was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results revealed that VMQ showed a better compatibility with silica than ESBR. Compared with the A151 composite, the composite with Si69 showed the higher content of ESBR in rubber-filler gel, which resulted in the higher bound rubber content and the weaker Payne effect, and it also exhibited higher tensile strength, higher tear strength, better wear resistance, and lower hardness. However, the presence of Si69 reduced the crosslink efficiency of ESBR and completely inhibited the crosslinking of VMQ, which caused the composite to show higher tan delta value at 60 degrees C than the A151 composite.

Abstract:The effects of the blending process on the mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber/cis-butadiene rubber/silica systems was studied in relation to the order of addition of two kinds of rubbers during blending. The specific blending method of two-step rubber feeding method led to different mixing conditions, and consequently the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates varied significantly. The blending process was mainly influenced by two factors: the wetting of the filler and the interactions of the materials. This work focused on the influence of filler loading on different blending methods, in order to build up the relationship between bound rubber and various properties in silica filled SBR/BR compounds.

Abstract:The filler networks of natural rubber (NR) silica-filled coupling agents KH560, Si69, and NXT were studied using a rubber processing analyzer (RPA). The effects of different coupling agents on the rheological behavior of silica-filled NR were investigated. The results showed that the three types of coupling agents could control the surface properties of silica, diminish the silica network, reduce the storage modulus and loss modulus, weaken the Payne effect, and improve processability. A comprehensive modification effect was observed for the coupling agent NXT. For different modified silica loading scenarios, the rheological properties of natural rubber composites filled with silica modified by the silane coupling agent NXT were assessed. The Payne effects were more obvious with the increased loading of fillers, while G' and G '' nonlinearly rose with the increase of frequency. Finally, the platform effect appeared, demonstrating the shear thinning phenomenon. The best compatibility and minimum extent of agglomeration of silica was obtained from the composite filled with 50 phr silica.
Characterization of Filler-rubber Interaction, Filler Network Structure, and Their Effects on Viscoelasticity for Styrene-butadiene Rubber Filled with Different Fillers

Abstract:For styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds filled with the same volume fraction of carbon black (CB), precipitated silica and carbon-silica dual phase filler (CSDPF), filler-rubber interactions were investigated thru bound rubber content (BRC) of the compounds and solid-state H-1 low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The results indicated that the BRC of the compound was highly related to the amount of surface area for interaction between filler and rubber, while the solid-state H-1 low-field NMR spectroscopy was an effective method to evaluate the intensity of filler-rubber interaction. The silica-filled compound showed the highest BRC, whereas the CB-filled compound had the strongest filler-rubber interfacial interaction, verified by NMR transverse relaxation. The strain sweep measurements of the compounds were conducted thru a rubber process analyzer; the results showed that the CSDPF-filled compound presented the lowest Payne effect, which is mainly related to the weakened filler network structure in polymer matrix. The temperature sweep measurement, tested by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, indicated that the glass transition temperature did not change when SBR was filled with different fillers, whereas the storage modulus in rubbery state and the tan peak height were greatly affected by the filler network structure of composites.
Effect of Vinyltriethoxysilane on the Properties of Liquid Silicone Rubber

Abstract:Molding liquid silicone rubber with high hardness and strength was prepared using vinyl silicone oil as the raw material,fumed silica treated by vinyltriethoxysilane as the filler.The influence of the vinyltriethoxysilane on the performance of the molding liquid silicone rubber was studied.Results show that the content of vinyltriethoxysilane can significantly affect the vulcanization characteristics of the silicone rubber.With the increase of the amount of vinyltriethoxysilane,the scorch time of the silicone rubber gradually shortens,while the curing time gradually extended,and the tensile strength,tear strength,and electrical strength of vulcanized silicone rubber reach to a maximum and then decrease.There is no significant effect on the volume resistivity of the silicone rubber when the tensile elongation decreases,but the Shore A hardness and initial viscosity rate increases.With the loadings of vinyltriethoxysilane at 1 phr,the tensile strength of the silicone rubber reaches to the maximum value(8.8 MPa) with a tear strength of 22.2 kN/ m,a Share A hardness of 50,a tensile elongation of 370%,an electric strength of 22.5 kV/ mm,and a volume resistivity of13.5105 cm,with no significant effect on the viscosity and its growth rate.

Abstract:Nanoparticles significantly reinforce rubber and enhance nonlinear mechanical behavior while the underlining mechanisms are not clear. Herein the effects of crosslinking, filler content and filler surface chemistry on the linear and nonlinear rheological responses of silica filled nitrile butadiene rubber are investigated. A time-concentration superposition principle is employed for constructing rheological master curves. While the strain amplification and dynamics retardation contribute to the high-frequency linear rheology of the compounds, the former is crucial for the vulcanizates with matrix of similar crosslinking degree. In both the compounds and vulcanizates, the Payne effect is initiated at a similar microscopic strain of the rubber phase. A weak overshoot of loss modulus appears in compounds containing hydrophilic silica and vulcanizates containing hydrophobic silica. It is suggested that the viscoelastic matrix is highly important for the rheological responses of the filled compounds and vulcanizates.

Abstract:Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites with silica, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and montmorillonite (MMT) were prepared and the interfacial and mechanical properties were compared to understand the reinforcing behaviours of these fillers based on the results of SEM, DSC, DMA, etc. Due to the formation of interparticle domain, HNTs immobilized more rubber approaching their surface than silica and MMT. Interestingly, only tightly immobilized rubber chains made contribution to the enhancement of interfacial and mechanical strength of SBR composites. This was because the tightly immobilized rubber acted as a bridge in the filler-rubber interface and induced the formation of stretched rubber chains linked filler network when the composites were loaded in tension, while loosely immobilized rubber were easy to slip off from filler surface, causing the separation between filler and bulk rubber. Therefore, silica with more tightly immobilized rubber approaching its surface showed better reinforcing effect on rubber than HNTs and MMT.

Abstract:Associating molecular structure and mechanical properties is important for silicone rubber design. Although silicone rubbers are widely used due to their odourless, non-toxic, and high- and low-temperature resistance advantages, their application and development are still limited by their poor mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of silicone rubbers can be regulated by designing the cross-link density and cross-linking structure, and altering the molar contents of vinyl in the side groups of methyl vinyl silicone rubber (MVQ) leads to different cross-linking structures and cross-linking densities in the vulcanized rubber. Therefore, this study investigated the differences in molecular parameters and molecular chain structures of unprocessed MVQ rubbers with different vinyl contents. The results showed that MVQ rubbers with high vinyl contents were branched polymers, better facilitating the cross-linking reaction than MVQ rubbers with low vinyl contents. In addition, silicone rubbers with different vinyl contents were co-cross-linked to introduce an inhomogeneous cross-linked network in the silicone rubber to improve its mechanical properties. The cross-linked network properties were analysed by the Flory-Rehner model and Mooney-Rivlin plots, and it was found that the long chains in the sparsely cross-linked domains of the network favoured high elongation at break and the short chains in the densely cross-linked domains contributed to high modulus, which could satisfy the functions of reinforcing and toughening the rubber materials at the same time. It was also found by analysing the filler network and aggregate morphology that the inhomogeneous cross-linked network led to an improvement in the dispersion of silica in the rubber and a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of silicone rubber.

Abstract:The effect of structure of unfilled silicone rubber on the mechanical properties and processability of reinforced silicone rubber was analyzed by dynamic mechanical property testing method. Effect of combined form of unfilled silicone rubber on the properties of reinforced silicone rubber was also investigated. The results show that the reinforced silicone rubber is able to endure properly with vinyl end silicone rubber at lower glass transition temperature (T_g). Presence of higher concentration of vinyl group in unfilled silicone rubber showed better performance in reinforced silicone rubber.The higher the molecular weight of unfilled silicone rubber, the worse the process fluidity of the reinforced silicone rubber. The optimum reinforced performance was observed in presence of 0.15%(mass fraction) vinyl content when unfilled silicone rubber contains 30phr vinyl and 70phr methyl as well.

Abstract:Improving the interfacial interaction between rubber and silica nanoparticles, and simultaneously reducing free sulfur and preventing migration and volatilization of a rubber vulcanizing agent, commercial sulfur compound aliphatic ether polysulfide (VA-7) was chemically attached to the silica surface to obtain a functionalized nanoparticle (silica-s-VA7). Functional nanoparticles can not only effectively crosslink rubber without sulfur as a novel vulcanizator, but are also evenly dispersed in the rubber matrix and improve the dispersion of the remaining pristine silica as an interfacial compatibilizer. In addition, the thicker immobilized polymer layer and prominent crosslinking density of SBR nanocomposites simultaneously demonstrate that the novel vulcanizing agent silica-s-VA7 gives rise to significant improvement on the rubber–filler interfacial adhesion on account of the covalent linkages of organic and inorganic interfaces between elastomer and nanofillers. We envisage that this strategy may provide a new avenue to implement high-efficiency design for a multifunctional rubber-vulcanizing agent through an organic and inorganic hybridization mechanism.
