Abstract:Conventional polyvinyl alcohol-based gel electrolytes are generally limited in ionic conductivity and cannot well meet the requirements of the self-healing and flexible smart device. Herein, we design a highly conductive hydrogel electrolyte (ionic conductivity up to 84 mS cm −1 ), based on cross-linked aqueous acrylamide (AAm) solution in the presence of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), with excellent self-healing capability by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between PVP and PAM. The self-healing all-in-one flexible supercapacitor fabrication with the gel electrolyte and in-situ polymerization polypyrrole (PPy) electrode can achieve repeated healable 5 cycles without extra addition, stretch up to 750 % compared with the original lengths and bend different angles with slight performance decay. This work provides new idea for the synthesis of highly conductive, self-healing and flexible hydrogel electrolyte to promote the development of all-in-one supercapacitor with high specific capacitance for practical applications in flexible and wearable electronics.

A Regenerable Hydrogel Electrolyte for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:Easy regenerability of core components such as electrode and electrolyte is highly required in advanced electrochemical devices. This work reports a reliable, regenerable, and stretchable hydrogel electrolyte based on ionic bonds between polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyallylamine (PAH). PAA-PAH electrolyte (1M LiCl addition) exhibits high ionic conductivity (0.050 S·cm-1) and excellent mechanical property (fracture strain of 1,688%). Notably, the electrolyte can be regenerated to any desired shape under mild conditions and remains 96% and 90% of the initial ionic conductivity after the first and second regeneration, respectively. PAA-PAH/LiCl-based supercapacitor exhibits nearly 100% capacitance retention upon rolling, stretching, and 5,000 charge-discharge cycles, whereas the regenerated device holds 97.6% capacitance of the initial device and 90.9% after 5,000 cycles. This low-cost, high-efficiency, and regenerable hydrogel electrolyte reveals very promising use in solid-state/flexible supercapacitors and possibly becomes a standard commercial hydrogel electrolyte for sustainable electrochemical energy devices.

Abstract:Although the hydrogel electrolytes for flexible energy-storage device have made great progress, it still remains a huge challenge to assemble a smart supercapacitor with high ionic conductivity and excellent self-healing when suffering physical damage. Herein, a novel self-healing hydrogel electrolyte (B-PVA/KCl/GO) is designed and prepared through graphite oxide (GO) doped into a diol-borate ester bonding cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) network. It is found that the moderate amount of GO-doped into hydrogel (2.3 wt% GO, 47.5 mS/cm) is obviously improved ionic conductivity compared with bare B-PVA/KCl hydrogel (32.6 mS/cm). Interestingly, the B-PVA/KCl/GO hydrogel electrolyte exhibits excellent self-healing capability that can repair its original configuration with 5 min when it is cut. Moreover, the activated carbon-based supercapacitor with B-PVA/KCl/GO hydrogel electrolyte delivers high specific capacitance of 156 F g−1 at 0.3 A g−1 and can also restore its capacitive performances via 7 times healing cycles without external stimulus. The presented work provides a new strategy to construct a flexible and self-healing hydrogel to apply for wearable electronics, smart apparels or flexible robots.

Abstract:Superior self-healability and stretchability are critical elements for the practical wide-scale adoption of personalized electronics such as portable and wearable energy storage devices. However, the low healing efficiency of self-healable supercapacitors and the small strain of stretchable supercapacitors are fundamentally limited by conventional polyvinyl alcohol-based acidic electrolytes, which are intrinsically neither self-healable nor highly stretchable. Here we report an electrolyte comprising polyacrylic acid dual crosslinked by hydrogen bonding and vinyl hybrid silica nanoparticles, which displays all superior functions and provides a solution to the intrinsic self-healability and high stretchability problems of a supercapacitor. Supercapacitors with this electrolyte are non-autonomic self-healable, retaining the capacitance completely even after 20 cycles of breaking/healing. These supercapacitors are stretched up to 600% strain with enhanced performance using a designed facile electrode fabrication procedure.

Abstract:All-solid-state flexible supercapacitors provide favourable conditions for the development of portable and wearable devices. The development of electrolytes with excellent self-healing, mechanical and electrochemical properties have become an effective strategy to address the significant mechanical strain and damage of conventional solid state supercapacitors. Herein, a novel PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel electrolyte with slide-ring structure and hydrogen bonds was synthesized by copolymerization method. The PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel exhibits outstanding ionic conductivity (35 mS cm -1 ), remarkable self-healing behavior (healing efficiency of 91.3%) and large tensile strain (over 1000%). Furthermore, the supercapacitor with PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel electrolyte has a large specific capacitance (124 F g -1 ) and maintains 82.9% of its initial value after 5000 cycles. This study designed a multifunctional hydrogel electrolyte, which provides a promising insight for the development of emerging electronic products with customization functions.

Abstract:Excellent self-healability and cold resistance are attractive properties for a portable/wearable energy-storage device. However, achieving the features is fundamentally dependent on an intrinsically self-healable electrolyte with high ionic conduction at low temperature. Here we report such a hydrogel electrolyte comprising sodium alginate cross-linked by dynamic catechol-borate ester bonding. Since its dynamically cross-linked alginate network can tolerate high-content inorganic salts, the electrolyte possesses excellent healing efficiency/cyclability but also high ionic conduction at both room temperature and low temperature. A supercapacitor with the multifunctional hydrogel electrolyte completely restores its capacitive properties even after breaking/healing for 10 cycles without external stimulus. At a low temperature of -10 °C, the capacitor is even able to maintain at least 80% of its room-temperature capacitance. Our investigations offer a strategy to assemble self-healable and cold-resistant energy storage devices by using a multifunctional hydrogel electrolyte with rationally designed polymeric networks, which has potential application in portable/wearable electronics, intelligent apparel or flexible robot, and so on.

Abstract:Next-generation wearable electronics are expected to endure significant deformations and mechanical damage. Therefore, self-healing stretchable electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and robust mechanical strength, that are high tolerance of deformations and to spontaneously recover electrochemical properties after external damage, are necessary conditions for the realization of flexible supercapacitors. Here, a new type of zwitterionic supramolecular hydrogels crosslinked through rationally designed ionic associations and hydrogen bonds is reported (PAD/H2SO4). The resultant supramolecular network realizes high ionic conductivity (57 mS cm-1) as well as unprecedented mechanical properties such as high toughness of 35000 J m-2, notch-insensitive up to 2200% strain, and efficient instantaneous self-healing within 5 minutes. Acting as electrolyte, a novel flexible supercapacitor design strategy is proposed by integrating capacitive materials directly onto the PAD/H2SO4 hydrogel to achieve exceptional electrochemical performance, which can be repeatable for at least 50 cutting/healing cycles. The facile and versatile strategy for construction of the integrated all-gel-state supercapacitors with self-healing stretchable electrolytes will provide new directions for future long-life flexible devices.

Abstract:Hydrogel electrolytes for energy storage devices have made great progress, yet they present a major challenge in the assembly of flexible supercapacitors with high ionic conductivity and self-healing properties. Herein, a smart self-healing hydrogel electrolyte based on alginate/poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (alginate/PEDOT:PSS)(A/P:P) was prepared, wherein H2SO4 was employed as a polymeric initiator, as well as a source of ions. PEDOT:PSS is a semi-interpenetrating network (IPN) that has been used in recent studies to exhibit quick self-healing properties with the H2SO3 additive, which further improves its mechanical strength and self-healing performance. A moderate amount of PEDOT:PSS in the hydrogel (5 mL) was found to significantly improve the ionic conductivity compared to the pure hydrogel of alginate. Interestingly, the alginate/PEDOT:PSS composite hydrogel exhibited an excellent ability to self-heal and repair its original composition within 10 min of cutting. Furthermore, the graphite conductive substrate-based supercapacitor with the alginate/PEDOT:PSS hydrogel electrolyte provided a high specific capacitance of 356 F g−1 at 100 mV/s g−1. The results demonstrate that the A/P:P ratio with 5 mL PEDOT:PSS had a base sheet resistance of 0.9 Ω/square. This work provides a new strategy for designing flexible self-healing hydrogels for application in smart wearable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible electrochemical energy storage devices have great potential in wearable and portable electronic devices. However, their practical applications have been deferred by mechanical damages such as repeated stretching, bending and squeezing. Self-healing hydrogel electrolytes can automatically repair such physical damages and maintain good electric contact at electrode/electrolyte interface. Herein, we report a hydrogel electrolyte with excellent tensile properties and good conductivity under large strain/stress. A solid state supercapacitor was further demonstrated, showing a high energy density of 21.3 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 350 W kg-1. The as-fabricated supercapacitor possesses good stretchability, with a 68% of retention of its initial capacitance after 40 breaking/healing cycles. The excellent self-healing capability of the hydrogel electrolyte can be attributed to the presence of hydrogen bonds and molecular chain fluidity within its structural motif. Our work provides promising routes towards developing new self-healing solid-state electrolytes for next-generation electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications with good performance and high safety.

High strength self-healable supercapacitor based on supramolecular polymer hydrogel with upper critical solubility temperature

Abstract:Here, we report poly(N-acryloylglycinamide-co-vinyltriazole) p(NAGA-co-VTZ) supramolecular polymer hydrogel doped with activated polypyrrole nanotubes (acPPyNTs) as a high-strength self-healable material for supercapacitors. First, the p(NAGA-co-VTZ) hydrogel films were synthesized by photopolymerization of N-acryloylglycinamide and 1-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole without any cross-linkers. Scanning electron microscopy and mechanical tests showed that initial monomer concentration strongly affects both hydrogel microstructure and resulted mechanical properties. The hydrogels demonstrated self-healing ability through hydrogen bonding at the temperatures above upper critical solubility temperature, excellent mechanical properties (0.9 MPa), large stretchability (1300 %) and cut resistance. Next, as active material for electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLC) carbonized and ethanol/KOH activated polypyrrole nanotubes (acPPyNTs) were prepared. Symmetric self-healable supercapacitor employing p(NAGA-co-VTZ) hydrogel, acPPyNTs and aqueous 3M KCl solution was assembled. Cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements showed that the prepared device gave a specific capacitance of 282.62 F g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 and high areal capacitance of 316.86 mF cm-2 at scan rate of 10 mV s-1. The supercapacitor operates over wide voltage window (0-1.2 V) and provides excellent cyclic performance with capacitance retention of 97 % after 10 000 cycles and 94 % after self-healing. Overall, the prepared self-healable supercapacitor appears to have considerable potential as high-performance energy storage device.

Abstract:Due to inherently poor healable and stretchable features, the most explored polyvinyl alcohol-based gel electrolytes cannot well meet the requirements of stretchable, healable and multifunctional supercapacitors. Here, we report a hydrogel of a copolymer cross-linked by double linkers of Laponite (synthetic hectorite-type clay) and graphene oxide. The resultant hydrogel shows high mechanical stretchability, excellent ionic conductivity, and superior healable performance. Along with designing wrinkled-structure electrodes, supercapacitors fabricated by using this hydrogel as a gel electrolyte not only exhibit ultrahigh mechanical stretchability of 1000%, but also achieve repeated healable performance under treatments of both infrared light irradiation and heating. More significantly, a broken/healed supercapacitor also possesses an ultrahigh stretchability up to 900% with slight performance decay. This hydrogel electrolyte could be easily functionalized by introducing other functional components, and extended for use in other portable and wearable energy related devices with multifunction.

Abstract:Hydrogels, with excellent flexibility, leakage-free, and high safety, are considered as desired electrolytes to build flexible quasi-solid-state supercapacitors. Sodium polyacrylate acid (PANa) hydrogel possesses high water retention capacity and ionic conductivity, but its uncontrollable swelling hinders its practical applications. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to fabricate flexible hybridized electrolyte, where the PANa hydrogel is restricted inside the interlayer spacing of GO membranes. The high-speed spin-treatment regularized GO membrane possesses uniform interlayer channels, where the hydrogel precursor can be infiltrated and in situ polymerized inside the interlayer spacing. Furthermore, the interaction between the PANa polymer chain and GO flakes can prevent structural deformation and uncontrollable swelling of the lamellar membrane. Therefore, the PANa-GO electrolytes exhibit excellent mechanical properties (24.36 MPa), high ionic conductivity (61.03 mS cm(-1)), and outstanding antiswelling ability. Moreover, the supercapacitor device assembled by the PANa-GO-15 electrolyte and MnO2 electrodes exhibits a high specific capacitance of 123.1 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and good rate ability. Even under bending or low-temperature conditions, the flexible device can still maintain its energy storage ability. This novel structural regularization and confinement approach may offer a new option for designing robust, antiswelling, and high ionic conductivity flexible electrolytes.

Abstract:Flexible semisolid supercapacitors (FSCs) are a kind of essential energy supplies for fast-developed wearable devices. However, the widely reported FSCs use hydrogel electrolytes, dramatically limiting the improvement of the energy density and working potential. Using ionogel electrolytes can solve these problems, but tolerating destruction is still a challenge. Herein, an ionogel electrolyte with good flexibility, high mechanical strength, wide potential window, and fast self-healing feature is designed to assemble the FSCs, solving the above prob-lems simultaneously. The metal-ligand interaction of P(VI-co-VmimBF4) with Zn2+ as the dynamic motif is introduced in the ionogel electrolyte, which not only leads to good flexibility and high mechanical strength of 0.58 MPa, but also endows the fast self-healing ability. Benefitting from the good ionic conductivity of 0.36 mS/ cm and wide potential window of 3.2 V of the electrolyte, the assembled FSCs with a covalent organic frame-work/reduced graphene oxide electrodes achieve a high energy density of 46 Wh/kg. No capacitance deterio-ration appears for the assembled supercapacitor in bending, and 85% of the original capacitance can be retained for the healed device from two cut pieces. This work provides a way to design a high-performance gel electrolyte for assembling flexible and healable energy storage devices.

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), bacterial cellulose (BC) and sulfuric acid were used as raw materials to prepare PVA/BC composite hydrogel electrolyte (CHEPVA/BC) by physical cross-linking freezing-thawing cycle method. After freeze-thaw cycles, PVA and BC form a large number of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, which endow the composite hydrogel with good self-healing property (SHP) and mechanical properties (MPs). The effect of BC content (BCC) on MPs and ionic conductivity (IC) of CHEPVA/BC were discussed. The results show that the composite hydrogel with BCC of 0.6% has the best SHPs and MPs, with breaking strength and IC as high as 0.41 MPa and 138.9 mS/cm, respectively. After the first healing cycle (FHC), IC and healing rate still reach 84.1 mS/cm and 74%, respectively. Polyaniline electrode was polymerized in-situ on the surface of the self-healing CHEPVA/BC, and a flexible all-in-one supercapacitor was designed and assembled. The results show that when aniline concentration is 0.2 mol/L, the supercapacitor device achieved high specific capacitance (580.8 mF/cm2), excellent energy density (20.17 μW·h/cm2) and power density (50 μW/cm2) at current density of 0.2 mA/cm2, and the capacitance retention rate after the FHC reaches 66%, showing good self-healing performance and great potential to maintain mechanical integrity and electrochemical stability. These findings indicate that the self-healing CHEPVA/BC has great application prospects in flexible wearable energy storage devices.
Proton Hydrogel-Based Supercapacitors with Rapid Low-Temperature Self-Healing Properties

Abstract:Hydrogel-based supercapacitors are an up-and-coming candidate for safe and portable energy storage. However, it is challenging for hydrogel electrolytes to achieve high conductivity and rapid self-healing at subzero temperatures because the movements of polymer chains and the reconstruction capability of broken dynamic bonds are limited. Herein, a highly conductive proton polyacrylamide-phytic acid (PAAm-PA) hydrogel electrolyte with rapid and autonomous self-healing ability and excellent adhesion over a wide temperature range is developed. PA, as a proton donor center, endows the hydrogels with high conductivity (102.0 mS cm-1) based on the Grotthuss mechanism. PA can also prevent the crystallization of water and form multiple reversible hydrogen bonds in the polymer network, which solves the dysfunction of self-healing hydrogels in a cryogenic environment. Accordingly, the hydrogel electrolytes demonstrate fast low-temperature self-healing ability with a self-healing efficiency of 79.4% within 3 h at -20 °C. In addition, the hydrogel electrolytes present outstanding adhesiveness on electrodes due to the generation of hydrogen bonds between PA and activated carbon electrodes. As a result, the integrated hydrogel-based supercapacitors with tight bonding electrode/electrolyte interface deliver a 139.5 mF cm-2 specific capacitance at 25 °C. Moreover, the supercapacitors display superb self-healing ability, achieving 92.1% of capacitance recovery after three cutting-healing cycles at -20 °C. Furthermore, the supercapacitors demonstrate only 6.4% capacitance degradation after 5000 charging-discharging cycles at -20 °C. This work provides a roadmap for designing all-in-one flexible energy storage devices with excellent self-healing ability over a wide temperature range.

Abstract:The PVA-based hydrogel electrolyte, characterized by its high ionic conductivity and degradability, holds significant promise for applications in flexible supercapacitors. However, pure PVA hydrogel electrolytes have suffered from deficiencies in flexibility, self-healing capability, and resistance to freezing. In this study, a novel approach was employed by in situ blending Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) with Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2) dissolved cellulose. When the mass ratio of PVA to cellulose was 2:1, the resulting PVA/cellulose composite hydrogel electrolyte exhibited commendable tensile strength (198 KPa) and remarkably high elongation at break (2415%); the assembled zinc/carbon asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrated an area-specific capacitance of 636 mF·cm-2 (2 mA·cm-2). Moreover, at -30°C, the capacitance retention exceeded 94%, indicating excellent anti-freezing properties. Subsequent electrical performance tests on the self-healed hydrogel electrolyte capacitors yielded a capacitance retention rate exceeding 94%, demonstrating outstanding self-healing capabilities. This novel class of hydrogel electrolytes provides a viable research perspective for addressing the aforementioned issues. Additionally, this study also involved a straightforward treatment of post-use hydrogels, allowing for the recovery of high-value zinc salts such as zinc carbonate and zinc chloride, with a recycling efficiency as high as 55%. The entirety of the experiment showcases an environmentally friendly and sustainable engineering process.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors based on hydrogel electrolytes are promising power sources for wearable devices but suffer from high interfacial resistance and other drawbacks. To address this problem, we herein prepared a tough poly(vinyl alcohol)-gelatine double-network hydrogel electrolyte and endowed it with self-healability and low interfacial resistance through the introduction of reversible boronic ester bonds, glycerol, and ammonium sul-phate. The in situ deposition of a conductive polypyrrole layer on the hydrogel surface afforded an all-in-one supercapacitor with decreased electrode-electrolyte interfacial resistance. The performance of this super -capacitor (areal capacitance = 1325.5 mF cm-2 at a current density of 1 mA cm-2, maximum energy density = 168.5 mu W h cm-2, maximum power density = 670 mu W cm-2) was superior to that of most of integrated supercapacitors reported to date and was hardly affected by low temperatures, long-term storage, bending, or self-healing after damage. Moreover, a biocompatible strain sensor based on the above hydrogel was used to detect the motion of human (face, elbow, knee) and mouse (thigh) models and thus monitor their behaviour and activity levels. Thus, the multifunctional integration of our dual-network hydrogel was concluded to hold considerable promise for the fabrication of wearable devices.

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes with a satisfied ionic conductivity have attracted interest in flexible energy storage technologies, such as supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries. However, the poor mechanical strength inhibits its widespread application. One of the most significant ways to avoid the drawbacks of the gel polymer electrolytes without compromising their ion transportation capabilities is to create a self-healing structure with the cross-linking segment. Herein, a new kind of macromolecule chemical cross-linked network ionic gel polymer electrolyte (MCIGPE) with superior electrochemical characteristics, a high flexibility, and an excellent self-healing ability were designed, based on chitosan and dibenzaldehyde-terminated poly (ethylene glycol) (PEGDA) via dynamic imine bonds. The ionic conductivity of the MCIGPE-65 can achieve 2.75 × 10-2 S cm-1. A symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor employing carbon cloth as current collectors, activated a carbon film as electrodes, and MCIGPE-65 as a gel polymer electrolyte exhibits a high specific capacitance of 51.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and the energy density of 7.1 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 500.2 W kg-1. This research proves the enormous potential of incorporating, environmentally and economically, chitosan into gel polymer electrolytes for supercapacitors.

Abstract:With the continuous development of flexible electronic devices, the corresponding demands for electrochemical storage devices with flexibility and self-healing properties have been raised. However, the current supercapacitors still have great limitations in mechanical and self-healing performance. Herein, flexible and self-healing poly (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPSA)/polyvinylimidazole (PVI)/LiCl polyelectrolyte is easily fabricated by a one-step copolymerization. The combined effect of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding significantly enhances the mechanical and self-repairing ability of polyelectrolytes, showing excellent stretchability of 1137%, fracture stress of 154.57 kPa, and high healing efficiency of 91% at room temperature for 24 h. Besides, flexible electrode is prepared by adsorbing poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/polystyrene sulfonate on a polyurethane sponge. After assembly with a polyelectrolyte, the as-prepared supercapacitor proves excellent electrochemical performance. The area capacitance is 106 mF cm−2 at 50 mV s−1 and excellent cycle stability (97% capacity retention rate after 2000 cycles). In addition, the completely cut off supercapacitor can be successfully restored to 90% of the original capacitance, and still maintain a capacitance retention rate of up to 98% after 1000 cycles. This work provides a possible solution for designing low-cost intelligent and durable electrochemical storage device for smart clothing or electronic skin.
