Abstract:Simulating nature to manufacture self-powered device or motor has been an important goal in science and engineering. Conventional spontaneous motions of an abject were generally achieved through the Marangoni flow of organic liquid or water solution. Regarding the metallic materials, mercury had ever been developed as beating heart as a kind of self-propulsion example. However, the serious safety concern of such medium restricts its extensive application. From an alternative, Yi et al. (Breathing to harvest energy as a mechanism toward making a liquid metal beating heart, 6: 94692-94698, 2016 [1]) discovered an important mechanism to realize gallium-based liquid metal beating heart through introducing a breathing mechanism in analogy to living organisms. With the unique configuration of a semisubmerged liquid metal droplet partially immersed in alkaline solution, such a system would produce a surface tension gradient perpendicular to the three-phase contact line which subsequently leads to the oscillation of the droplet and the surrounding solution. This finding suggests a feasible way to fabricate self-oscillating liquid metal motors without external electricity or fuels input. Except for such air driving mechanism, more environmental factors such as heat can also be applied to power the liquid metal system given appropriate designing. The present chapter illustrates the basic behaviors of such environment enabled liquid metal machines and their self-actuating driving mechanisms.
Optimizing the Sewing Position of Flexible Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters on a Three-Dimensional Deforming Heart: an Integrated Approach Using FEA, Deep Learning, and Theoretical Modeling

Abstract:Abstract Flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (FPEHs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their potential applications in the field of biomedicine, such as powering implantable devices. Despite observations in numerous in vivo experiments that the electrical output of FPEHs varies considerably with sewing positions during energy harvesting from heartbeats, optimal sewing positions have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, an approach that integrates Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep learning method and theoretical modeling was proposed to investigate the impact of the sewing position on the harvest performance of the FPEH, utilizing real three-dimensional heart deformation data as the end-to-end displacement load for the FPEH. The results reveal that the sewing positions have a significant influence on the electric output performance of the FPEH. The optimal sewing position was identified near the posterior interventricular groove on the upper part of the left ventricle, with a corresponding optimal resistance value of 8 MΩ and an output power of 122.9 nW. Additionally, five suggested sewing positions across different regions of the heart's surface were provided for clinical application. The methodology that integrates FEA, deep learning approach and theoretical modeling in this paper can be extended to determine the optimal position for the flexible devices patching on other irregular and deforming surfaces.

Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) possess tremendous potential applications in flexible electronic devices, heat flow management, and smart actuators. Splitting the bulk LMs into microspheres is of great significance to fabricate free-standing and microscale LM-based functional materials and devices. However, it is difficult to disperse the bulk LMs into microspheres because of their large surface tension and high density. In this work, the capillary-based microfluidic chip is employed to continuously and automatically generate LM microspheres in a large scale. The capillary-based microfluidic fabrication is universally applicable in ionic aqueous solution, hydrophobic solution, and the polymeric aqueous solution. The precise size control of LM microspheres can be easily realized by the co-flowing configuration in the microchannels. The coefficient of size variation of monodispersed LM microspheres can be controlled to as low as 0.47%. The free-standing LM microspheres can be used as functional microelectrodes within a wide temperature range from -19.8 to 20 °C and to fabricate tunable integrated circuits with different output powers. Most importantly, the LM microspheres exhibit photothermal property, which is used to make the optical sensor with linear response and to conduct the solar energy harvesting. The capillary-based microfluidic fabrication of LM microspheres provides a facile and templated methodology for processing bulk LMs into microscale units. The LM microspheres with excellent electrical conductivity and photothermal property hold great promise for the development of miniature soft electronics, light-driven actuators, and energy conversion medium.

Abstract:Here, we report advanced materials and devices that enable high-efficiency mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion from the natural contractile and relaxation motions of the heart, lung, and diaphragm, demonstrated in several different animal models, each of which has organs with sizes that approach human scales. A cointegrated collection of such energy-harvesting elements with rectifiers and microbatteries provides an entire flexible system, capable of viable integration with the beating heart via medical sutures and operation with efficiencies of similar to 2%. Additional experiments, computational models, and results in multilayer configurations capture the key behaviors, illuminate essential design aspects, and offer sufficient power outputs for operation of pacemakers, with or without battery assist.

Abstract:A piezoelectric mechanical energy harvesting (MEH) technique was recently demonstrated through in vivo experiment by harvesting energy from the motion of porcine left ventricle (LV) myocardial wall. This provides a new strategy of energy supply for operating implantable biomedical devices so as to avoid various shortcomings associated with battery energy. This paper resorts to an analytical electromechanical model for evaluating the efficiency of the piezoelectric MEH device especially of that used in closed chest environment. A nonlinear compressive spring model is proposed to account for the impeding effect of surrounding tissues on the device. Inputting the periodic variation of the LV volume as a loading condition to the device, numerical predictions for the electric outputs are obtained and compare well with experiments. A simple scaling law for the output electric power is established in terms of combined material, geometrical, circuit, and LV motion parameters. The results presented here may provide guidelines for the design of in vivo piezoelectric energy harvesting from motions of biological organs.

Abstract:Self-powered implantable devices with flexible energy harvesters are of significant interest due to their potential to solve the problem of limited battery life and surgical replacement. The flexible electronic devices made of piezoelectric materials have been employed to harvest energy from the motion of biological organs. Experimental measurements show that the output voltage of the device mounted on porcine left ventricle in chest closed environment decreases significantly compared to the case of chest open. A restricted-space deformation model is proposed to predict the impeding effect of pleural cavity, surrounding tissues, as well as respiration on the efficiency of energy harvesting from heartbeat using flexible piezoelectric devices. The analytical solution is verified by comparing theoretical predictions to experimental measurements. A simple scaling law is established to analyse the intrinsic correlations between the normalized output power and the combined system parameters, i.e. the normalized permitted space and normalized electrical load. The results may provide guidelines for optimization of in vivo energy harvesting from heartbeat or the motions of other biological organs using flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters.

Abstract:Mercury beating heart is a well-known phenomenon that consists of a mercury droplet covered with aqueous acid and an iron nail. However, mercury is highly poisonous, and its vapor is especially dangerous. Thus, related studies and applications on mercury have often been hindered. Here, we proposed another beating heart but employed a different material, i.e., GaIn alloy with low toxicity. A stainless steel wire was utilized to touch the side of the liquid-metal droplet in basic solution. Based on this method, periodic oscillation could be kept continuous and steady. This finding suggests a more feasible and safer way to realize beating behaviors, which would shed light on a variety of future applications, such as pump and mixer for the mini device.

Abstract:Implantable medical devices are mostly powered by battery that needs to be recharged or replaced frequently, resulting in the additional risk and economic burden on the patients. Harvesting the energy from the mechanical motion of biological organs using flexible electronics has attracted considerable research interest. The energy harvested from the heartbeat adequately provides sustainable power to these devices, whose energy consumption is approximately 10 $\mu~$W. Herein, we present a comprehensive review on the energy harvested from heartbeat through experiments and theoretical modeling, including the traditional strategies based on rigid solutions and most recent efforts on developing flexible piezoelectric devices. The research challenges and potential trends on this topic are also discussed.

Abstract:A novel approach is introduced to realize an artificial heart based on redistribution of charges on the surface of liquid metal droplets. The unique feature is that liquid metal droplets can be shaped into various forms when a driving voltage is applied at a specific condition. In addition, the deformed liquid metal droplets are easily restored to their original spherical shape by eliminating the driving voltage. The motions of electrically controlled liquid metal droplets make it possible to mimic the heartbeat. The heartbeat motions are precisely controlled by the modulation of the driving voltage amplitude and frequency. The maximum flow rate is ≈70 µL min−1 at 1.5 Vpp and 2 Hz square wave. To the best of our knowledge, this is the instance mimicking the artificial heart based on the electrically controlled liquid metal droplets. The experimental results reveal that the proposed deformation mechanism creates new opportunities in the field of soft robotics.

Abstract:Power supply for medical implantable devices (i.e. pacemaker) always challenges not only the surgery but also the battery technology. Here, we report a strategy for energy harvesting from the heart motion by using ultra-flexible piezoelectric device based on lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics that has most excellent piezoelectricity in commercial materials, without any burden or damage to hearts. Experimental swine are selected for in vivo test with different settings, i.e. opened chest, close chest and awake from anesthesia, to simulate the scenario of application in body due to their hearts similar to human. The results show the peak-to-peak voltage can reach as high as 3 V when the ultra-flexible piezoelectric device is fixed from left ventricular apex to right ventricle. This demonstrates the possibility and feasibility of fully using the biomechanical energy from heart motion in human body for sustainably driving implantable devices.

Abstract:Wearable hybrid energy harvesters show enormous potential for supplying power to wearable electronics since they circumvent the issue of discontinuous source energy of single energy harvesters and thereby supply more available energy. The hybridization of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and biofuel cells (BFCs) is promising; however, there are two major challenges. First, the two energy harvesters' outputs are severely mismatched, but optimized power management and design principles have not yet been demonstrated. Second, previously reported devices are based on planar structures and lack breathability. Here, we develop a breathable and woven hybrid energy harvester (BWHEH) that is knitted with a textile TENG and fiber BFCs. A power management circuit is specially designed to match and optimize the output direct current power supply, which can enlarge the output power by ~46.1 times, significantly lowering the effective internal impedance of the power source and improving the power delivery for common wearable loading conditions. The design principles of the power management for the TENG–BFC hybrid are thoroughly revealed. The wearable BWHEH self-charging power system can sustainably power various portable electronics by harvesting biomechanical and biochemical energy. This work provides a new route for energy harvesting and offers fundamental guidance for high-power hybrid energy harvesters. Data availability The authors do not have permission to share date.

Abstract:Perceiving mechanical stimuli and converting them into bioelectric signals to complete sensing information transmission and computation is a fundamental mechanism for survival and evolution of natural animals. This leads to a variety of intelligent behaviors, such as processing, learning, judgment, feedback, and so on when tackling complex and changeable environmental challenges. Until now, the realization of a bionic system to mimic the above activities has long been an important goal which is mainly based on the integration of distributed functional units, lacking the coordination between functional units and the whole systems. Herein, based on the mechano‐electronic coupling effect of liquid metals and by following the basic principle of perception and transduction of piezo proteins, a biomimetic functional liquid metal mechatronic device is proposed with the switching behavior via establishing the reversible charge gradient. Owing to flexible features of liquid metals, this all‐soft mechatronic device exhibits excellent compliance with the whole system. Based on electrochemical characteristics of liquid metals, the passive intelligent device demonstrates versatile behaviors, such as self‐energy supply, encoding, computation, sensing, information identification, communicating, and controlling functions etc. which can only possibly be achieved by living animals. This work opens a new strategy for developing intelligent mechatronic systems. Inspired by the switching behavior of Piezo proteins, an all‐soft liquid metal mechatronic device is proposed, where input signals (liquid metal patterns) actuated by mechanical stimuli are mapped to electrical output signals. Based on the electrochemical characteristics of liquid metal, the all‐in‐one function integration, including encoding, computation, sensing, information identification, communicating, and controlling functions, is implemented in self‐powered manner.

Abstract:We describe and demonstrate a new energy harvesting technology based on a microfluidic realization of a Wimshurst influence machine. The prototype device converts the mechanical energy of a pressure-driven flow into electrical energy, using a multiphase system composed of droplets of liquid mercury surrounded by insulating oil. Electrostatic induction between adjacent metal droplets drives charge through external electrode paths, resulting in continuous charge amplification and collection. We demonstrate a power output of 4 nW from the initial prototype and present calculations suggesting that straightforward device optimization could increase the power output by more than 3 orders of magnitude. At that level the power efficiency of this energy harvesting mechanism, limited by viscous dissipation, could exceed 90%. The microfluidic context enables straightforward scaling and parallelization, as well as hydraulic matching to a variety of ambient mechanical energy sources such as human locomotion.

Abstract:Implantable medical devices (IMDs) have become indispensable medical tools for improving the quality of life and prolonging the patient's lifespan. The minimization and extension of lifetime are main challenges for the development of IMDs. Current innovative research on this topic is focused on internal charging using the energy generated by the physiological environment or natural body activity. To harvest biomechanical energy efficiently, piezoelectric and triboelectric energy harvesters with sophisticated structural and material design have been developed. Energy from body movement, muscle contraction/relaxation, cardiac/lung motions, and blood circulation is captured and used for powering medical devices. Other recent progress in this field includes using PENGs and TENGs for our cognition of the biological processes by biological pressure/strain sensing, or direct intervention of them for some special self‐powered treatments. Future opportunities lie in the fabrication of intelligent, flexible, stretchable, and/or fully biodegradable self‐powered medical systems for monitoring biological signals and treatment of various diseases in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:As a fundamental and ubiquitous body motion, respiration offers a large amount of biomechanical energy with an average power up to the Watt level through movements of multiple muscles. The energy from respiration featured with excellent stability, accessibility and continuality inspires the design and engineering of biomechanical energy harvesting devices, such as triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), to realize human-powered electronics. This review article is thus dedicated to the emerging respiration-driven TENG technology, covering fundamentals, applications, and perspectives. Specifically, the human breathing mechanics are first introduced serving as the base for the developments of TENG devices with different configurations. Biomedical applications including electrical energy generation, healthcare monitoring, air filtration, gas sensing, electrostimulation, and powering implantable medical devices are then analyzed focusing on the design-application relationships. At last, current developments are summarized and critical challenges for driving these intriguing developments toward practical applications are discussed together with promising solutions.

Abstract:A flexible human energy harvesting generator – Liquid Metal Magnetohydrodynamics Generator (LMMG) is proposed and fabricated. Conceptual experiments were performed to investigate this electricity harvesting principle. Theoretical analysis predicts that the present method is promising at converting otherwise wasted human kinematical energy via a directional selective generation paradigm. In vitro experiment demonstrates output of 1.4 V/3.61 μW by 5.68 g Ga62In25Sn13 liquid metal with a rather high efficiency of more than 45%. The in vivo experiment actuated by a wrist swing during brisk walking with the plastic valve to rectify the flow, verified the potentiality of unidirectional actuation. This concept based on the flexible movement of LMMG is robust to supply electricity which would be important for future wearable micro/nano devices as a voltage constrained charge provider.

Abstract:Synthetic self-fuelled motors, which can spontaneously convert chemical energy into mechanical activity to induce autonomous locomotion, are excellent candidates for making self-powered machines, detectors/sensors, and novel robots. The present lab (Zhang et al. in Adv Mater 27: 2648-2655, 2004 [1]). discovered an extraordinary self-propulsion mechanism of synthetic motors based on liquid metal objects. Such motors could swim in a circular Petri dish or different structured channels containing aqueous solution with a pretty high velocity on the order of centimeters per second, and surprisingly long lifetime lasting for more than one hour without any assistance of external energy. The soft material liquid metal enables the motors to self-deform, which makes them highly adaptable for accomplishing tough missions in special environment. Interestingly, the motors work just like biomimetic mollusk since they closely resemble the nature by "eating" aluminum as "food", and can change shape by closely conforming to the geometrical space it voyages in. From practical aspect, one can thus develop a self-powered pump based on the actuation of the liquid metal enabled motor. Further, such pump can also be conceived to work as a cooler. Apart from different geometrical channels, several dominating factors, including the volume of the motor, the amount of aluminum, the property of the solution and the material of the substrate etc., have been disclosed to influence the performance of the autonomous locomotion evidently. This artificial mollusk system suggests an exciting platform for molding the liquid metal science to fundamentally advance the field of self-driven soft machine design, microfluidic systems, and eventually lead to the envisioned dynamically reconfigurable intelligent soft robots in the near future. In this chapter, the typical behaviors and fundamental phenomena of the self fuelled transformable liquid metal machines were illustrated.
