Abstract:Conventional global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) control for photovoltaic (PV) systems shows certain limitations in terms of convergence speed and tracking accuracy, resulting from the sophisticated searching mechanism to ensure the operation under partial shading conditions (PSCs). To address these issues, in this paper, a high-performance GMPPT (HP-GMPPT) method is proposed with a modified explicit PV model to express the global maximum power point directly, thus, effectively reducing the invalid searching in conventional solutions. Notably, in this paper, the requirement for irradiance measurement in the conventional explicit PV model is eliminated after sufficient modification by integrating a low-cost irradiance estimation mechanism. It is cost-effective for the existing PV systems. To validate the proposed HP-GMPPT method, simulation evaluations and comparisons are carried out under various PSC scenarios.

Abstract:To reduce the levelized cost of photovoltaic (PV) en-ergy, traditional global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) schemes are more and more employing sophisticated scanning or artificial intelligence technologies to optimize energy harvesting under partial shading conditions (PSCs). This may affect the convergence speed and implementation simplicity. To address these issues, a simple GMPPT scheme is proposed with a region- dependent segmentation (RDS) strategy. With the proposed scheme, locating the global maximum power point (GMPP) is efficiently accelerated. Compared with the conventional methods, a redundant scanning process is avoided due to the use of a low- complexity estimation of the GMPP voltage. Thus, the dynamics under PSCs can be improved. Simulations and experimental tests are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme under diverse shading scenarios.

Abstract:Partial shading conditions (PSC) caused by the nearby trees and dust are inevitable in photovoltaic (PV) generation systems. Traditional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods may fail in tracking the global maximum power point (GMPP) under PSC. This paper proposes a novel global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) method whose tracking speed is faster than the previously published GMPPT methods since it directly estimates the locus of GMPP based on the shading information. The advanced performance of the proposed method has been validated through the simulation using Simulink. Two popular MPPT methods including perturb and observe (P&O) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) were also implemented, along with the proposed method under different shading scenarios, for the comparative validation.

Abstract:In this paper, the best load line based two-stage MPPT, the analog locating circuit, the real maximum power point tracking (RMPPT) proposed by Ji Young-Hyok, Fibonacci search based MPPT and their variations are compared by simulation at Matlab/Simulink platform under several partially shaded conditions with a DC/DC circuit. These MPPT techniques are compared at global maxima tracking, steady-state oscillation, dynamic performance, the cumulative power generating, convergence speed, implementation complexity etc. In addition, a further discussion of two-stage MPPT and RMPPT are made.

Abstract:Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is an integral part of a system of energy conversion using photovoltaic (PV) arrays. The power-voltage characteristic of PV arrays operating under partial shading conditions exhibits multiple local maximum power points (LMPPs). In this paper, a new method has been presented to track the global maximum power point (GMPP) of PV. Compared with the past proposed global MPPT techniques, the method proposed in this paper has the advantages of determining whether partial shading is present, calculating the number of peaks on P-V curves, and predicting the locations of GMPP and LMPP. The new method can quickly find GMPP, and avoid much energy loss due to blind scan. The experimental results verify that the proposed method guarantees convergence to the global MPP under partial shading conditions.

Abstract:Under partial shading conditions (PSCs), photovoltaic (PV) generation systems exhibit multiple local and a single global maximum power point. Consequently, global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) is required to improve the performance of PV systems in such scenarios. This paper comparatively studies and evaluates the tracking performance of modern heuristic-optimization-based GMPPT techniques. Monte Carlo method is used to statistically analyze different methods. Simulation and experimental results indicate that many of the algorithms have difficulties in balancing the explorative and exploitative searching behaviors. Therefore, we propose a variable vortex search (VVS), which is capable of improving the performance of GMPPT by using a variable step size and deterministic starting points. This paper will aid researchers and practical engineers to gain a thorough understanding on how to use modern heuristic algorithms for maximum power out of PV systems. Furthermore, it offers a comprehensive guidance on how to perform efficiently GMPPT in the PV systems under PSCs.

Abstract:Maximum power point tracking(MPPT) technologies and their applications were classified based on the differences of control algorithms with three typical methods analyzed,i.e.the perturb and observe algorithm,incremental conductance algorithm and fuzzy control algorithm.The control model for each method was established with the system simulated using MATLAB/Simulink.Experiments were made to verify the feasibility and performance of the methods.By analyzing and comparing the simulation and experimental results,the quantitative characteristics of each method were obtained,including the steady state accuracy,dynamic response,misjudgment correction and hardware requirements.Therefore,the results provide the applicable conditions of the three methods for choosing the optimal scheme in practical MPPT applications.

Abstract:In photovoltaic(PV) power generation systems,the output of PV array is vulnerable to surroundings.The P-V curve of PV array contains several peaks under partially shaded condition(PSC) so that conventional maximum power point tracking(MPPT) methods can hardly find the real maximum power point(MPP).To avoid that happens,this paper proposes an optimized MPPT strategy,which is not only fit for PSC but also suitable for uniform shaded condition(USC).Comparing the optimized MPPT strategy and conventional MPPT methods,this paper illustrates the improved performance of optimized strategy under PSC.The simulation and experiment results show that the optimized strategy can obtain the evidence that shaded condition has occurred and tracks the global MPP precisely to improve the efficiency of PV systems

Abstract:Multiple peaks in power-voltage (P-V) characteristics of photovoltaic (PV) strings under partial shading conditions (PSC) bring challenges to maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques for reaching the global maximum power point (GMPP). Early studies have revealed that the locus of the GMPP can be predicted from the shading information, which is the mathematical indicator to express the PSC. In this paper, a novel global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) method based on the detection of the shading vector is proposed in this paper. The locus of the GMPP is estimated from the peak matrix transformed by shading vector. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed GMPPT method is capable of tracking the GMPP efficiently under various shading patterns. By comparing with the original 0.8V(OC)-model-based MPPT method, the proposed method reduces the tracking step by 75% while maintaining good prediction accuracy.

Abstract:The power-voltage (P-V) characteristics of a photovoltaic (PV) array exhibit multiple peaks under partial shading conditions (PSC). The classical 0.8VOC-model-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method assumes that the peaks are located at multiples of the 0.8VOC (open-circuit voltage). The global maximum power point (GMPP) is obtained after comparing the power of these voltage regions. In this paper, the proposed method reduces the comparison process and the voltage region can be determined based on the shading information. The improved performance of the proposed method has been verified using Simulink. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed technique is feasible and efficient in comparison with the classical 0.8VOC-model-based method.

Abstract:Under partial shading conditions (PSC), the powervoltage (P-V) characteristic curve of a photovoltaic string exhibits multiple peaks, posing a big challenge to the problem of global maximumpower point tracking (GMPPT). The traditional 0.8V(OC)-model-based GMPPT method locates the global maximum power point (GMPP) locus by comparing the power at each local power peak. However, a considerable amount of time is required for iteratively scanning each 0.8V(OC) vicinity. To address this problem, an improved 0.8V(OC)-model-based GMPPT method is proposed in this article. A shading vector is introduced to characterize the PSC. The proposed GMPPT method estimates the 0.8V(OC) region with the GMPP directly from the measured shading vector by the k-nearest neighbors approach and saves the time consumed in the comparison process used in the conventional method. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of tracking the GMPP efficiently and accurately under various shading patterns.

Abstract:In this paper a comparison of different types of maximum power point search methods for the photovoltaic panels is presented. The methods that represent each group of maximum power point techniques will be implemented in the software that allows to test the behaviour of photovoltaic panels in different environment conditions including partial shading. In this paper each implemented method was compared including time of convergence with the maximum power point, tracking error and differences in the energy obtained from photovoltaics during the simulation time. The algorithms were compared under both uniform lighting and partial shade conditions.

Abstract:This study firstly presents a concise overview and comparison of 96 fast maximum power point tracking (FMPPT) methods documented in the existing literature. Subsequently, a simulation and experimental framework is established to refine parameter settings and evaluate the performance of 10 FMPPT algorithms, including eight variable step size strategies, one numerical optimization method, and one deterministic soft computing approach, using statistical analysis. Key performance indicators such as steady-state time, tracking accuracy, energy-tracking loss, and power-tracking loss are considered. The simulation and experimental results are deliberated under uniform insolation conditions (UIC) and EN50530:2010 test conditions. Weighted scoring and the Friedman ranking test are utilized to analyze the data collected and provide users with a fair and informative basis for selecting an appropriate FMPPT methodology. This study is expected to be a valuable reference for researchers involved in FMPPT technology investigations.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved Simulated Annealing (SA) based Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technique designed for photovoltaic (PV) systems under partial shading conditions (PSC). Compared with existing SA MPPT algorithms, the proposed method performs faster convergence speed, higher tracking accuracy and continuously tracking of the global Maximum Power Point (GMPP) under climate changes. The new SA MPPT principle is fully explained, discussed and verified by simulation.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on analyzing the output characteristics of PV array under uniform irradiance and partial shading conditions (PSC). The algorithm adds partial shadow judging conditions in variable step perturb and observes (P&O) method. The system runs the variable step P&O method to realize MPPT when photovoltaic array is under uniform irradiance. Under PSC, the control method can eliminate the interference of local maximum power point (MPP) to make the PV array running at global MPP. Experimental results verify that the proposed algorithm can automatically track the global MPP under uniform irradiance and PSC.

Abstract:This paper presents the analysis, design and implementation of a high-performance step-up Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system for grid-connected Photovoltaic (PV) generation. The high-achieved MPPT control method, which is an important essential part of the efficient and low-cost PV system, needs to solve two main problems: wrongly tracking the local maxima under partial shading, and tracking in the direction opposite to reality under rapid atmospheric changes. Furthermore, the MPPT strategy should have the following traits: practical, ability to reach the global maxima in a minimum of time, costless and high efficiency. A simple boost topology using radiometer and a voltage sensor is proposed with the MPPT algorithm and the operation characteristics are analyzed. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive review of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques applied to photovoltaic (PV) power system available until January, 2012. A good number of publications report on different MPPT techniques for a PV system together with implementation. But, confusion lies while selecting a MPPT as every technique has its own merits and demerits. Hence, a proper review of these techniques is essential. Unfortunately, very few attempts have been made in this regard, excepting two latest reviews on MPPT [Salas, 2006], [Esram and Chapman, 2007]. Since, MPPT is an essential part of a PV system, extensive research has been revealed in recent years in this field and many new techniques have been reported to the list since then. In this paper, a detailed description and then classification of the MPPT techniques have made based on features, such as number of control variables involved, types of control strategies employed, types of circuitry used suitably for PV system and practical/commercial applications. This paper is intended to serve as a convenient reference for future MPPT users in PV systems.

Abstract:Aiming at the solar photovoltaic characteristics and the lower transformation efficiency problem in grid-connected photovoltaic power generation, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is put forward. According to the changes of amplitude and frequency of power-grid voltage, the proposed algorithm can calculate the correction value of maximum power point, which will be stacked with the maximum power obtained by means of perturbation and observation method, and then the MPPT control is realized. Simulation experiment results present that, compared with the traditional MPPT method using perturbation observation, the proposed method can avoid misjudgment, guarantee the shorter time for maximum power point tracking, and reduce the shock around the maximum power point. Moreover, it can effectively suppress the influences of instable factors on the maximum power point, and meet the optimal power point for stable operation of power grid.
