Abstract:To improve the performance of a pencil beam electron gun for terahertz traveling wave tubes (TWT), a support vector regression (SVR) method combined with a goal attainment algorithm, which is used to optimize its structural parameters considering the periodic permanent magnetic (PPM) focusing system, is proposed in this article. Moreover, a parameter correction method to reduce the impact of the thermal expansion on the electron gun is proposed. An electron gun for 0.22-THz TWT gun is developed, in which a 30-mA/23.8-kV electron beam emitted by a curved barium–tungsten cathode with a beam loading of 4 A/cm 2 is achieved with the optimized parameters. To the high current density for THz beam–wave interaction, the area compression ratio of electron beam is used in beam tunnel and reaches 144. The experimental results are very similar to the simulation results, which indicate that the methods would be beneficial to the development of TWT.

Abstract:An optimization methodology is put forward for the design of gridded electron gun, which pays special attention to the spacings among cathode, shadow grid and control grid. The optimization is carried out on the basis of Microwave Tube Simulator Suite MTSS and multi-physics simulation software ANSYS. Using this optimization method, the electric performance of the designed gridded electron gun under working condition has minor changes compared to the simulation results. Using the designed spacings among cathode and the grids as mounting dimensions, the unexpected contact among cathode and the grids due to thermal deformation has less possibility to occur.

Abstract:The periodic permanent magnet (PPM) focusing system is an important part of the traveling wave tube (TWT), which is used to focus the electron beams to pass through the beam wave interaction region stably. However, PPM field optimization is time-consuming, and the optimization results are closely dependent on the designer's experience. The automatic optimization method introduced in this paper, which combines magnetic focusing simulator (MFS) and Electron optics simulator (EOS) to calculate PPM and electron gun, can greatly improve the design efficiency, and the example has shown good performance.

Abstract:The initial structure parameters of the electron gun for Ka-band TWT can be obtained by the synthesis iteration proposed by Vaughan,and then,the modifications for electron gun's structure are performed by stimulation and optimization with the TAU.With comparison of the uniformity electron's emission density of the cathode surface,the influence of trajectories for different thermal emission angles of electrons,the trajectory's laminar and the radial current density distribution near the electron beam's waist,the final structure of the electron gun is got.The test result is in agreement with the optimized design for Ka-band TWT electron gun.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the preliminary structure design and optimization of a C-band photocathode RF gun for a compact electron diffraction facility, which is designed to work at the frequency of 5.712GHz. A dual coupler and elliptical iris between the half-cell and full-cell will be adopted in this gun to achieve lower emittance and larger mode separation. A detailed comparison on the beam dynamics parameters of the optimized structure and traditional RF gun is performed. This paper likewise presents the 3-D simulation and analysis of this RF gun.

Abstract:A 1.3 GHz photocathode RF gun is under study in peking University. The photocathode RF gun, composed of gun cavity, photocathode and Laser system, is expected to deliver a electron beam with a normalized transverse rms emittance of 1π mm·mrad at a charge of 1nC. Its performance has been studied by the space-charge tracking code PARMELA. The influences of the initialized electron beam were also studied. The emittance compensation technique is employed. After optimization of the parameters was achieved, the normalized transverse emittance is 1.39 πmm·mrad at the gun exit.

Abstract:Background:In an electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiment, the electron emitted by the electron gun collides with atoms and molecules, and the momentum and energy of the scattered electron are analyzed by EELS, then the information of electronic structure and collision dynamics of the target can be deduced.Purpose:A well designed intermediate-high energy electron gun with small beam size and divergence angle is needed to satisfy the requirement of EELS.Methods:To obtain the optimal beam condition, the electron optics software SIMION was utilized to simulate the space size and divergence angle of the electron beam at target position, the electron gun has a simple structure, i.e., consisting of thermionic cathode, grid electrode, anode electrode, focus electrode and deflection plates. The tuning range of electron energy is wide (1?3 keV) and easy to operate.Results:The beam size of 0.95mm, divergence angel of 0.93°, and beam current of 6.27?A of the constructed electron gun was obtained at 27mm from the exit of electron gun at a beam energy of 1.5 keV.Conclusion:An electron gun which satisfies the requirements of EELS has been developed.

Abstract:In this paper we report the preliminary design and considerations on a multi-discipline ultra-fast source, which is capable of providing the user community with femtosecond electron bunch and light pulses with the wavelength ranging from IR to X-ray. The facility is based on photocathode RF gun driven by a Ti:Sapphire laser system. The low emittance subpicosecond electron bunch at the gun exit can be used in femtosecond electron diffraction setup to visualize the ultrafast structural dynamics. After acceleration and compression, the electron beam with the energy of 50 MeV is further used to provide high peak brightness X-ray by inverse Compton scattering with TW laser. We also consider the possibility and reliability of storing the electron beam in a compact storage ring and the laser pulse in a super-cavity. Operating in this scheme may increase the average flux of the X-ray photons by orders of magnitude.

Abstract:The nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II and the electron optics simulator were combined to form a multiobjective optimization design tool for electron optics systems of traveling-wave tubes. After determining the objective functions that vary with the macroscopic electrical parameters that need to optimize the electron optics system, the optimization tool is capable of obtaining the optimal solution set automatically. Then, the microscopic electron trajectories of the individuals in the optimal solution set are analyzed to get the final scheme. In the collector optimization, the maximum collector efficiency and the minimum back-streaming current are used as optimization goals. While for the demonstrated electron gun, the maximum waist position is set to be the optimization goal, together with constraints of emitting current and beam waist radius. After analyzing the energy density distribution on the collector inner surface or the laminar flow of the electron gun, the final scheme is determined from the optimal solution set.

Abstract:A compact C-band high brightness photoinjector for ultra-fast electron diffraction (UED) is under development at Tsinghua University. The C-band photoinjector, operating at 5.172 GHz, uses a 1.45-cell C-band RF gun as the electron source. The design of the RF gun has addressed the physics, beam dynamics and mechanical aspects, and based on these design studies, a prototype has been fabricated. In order to obtain optimized performance for the UED, beam dynamics simulation has been carried out using the particle tracking code Astra for the photoinjector consisting of an alternative multi-cell RF gun design and a C-band compressor downstream. The beam dynamics parameters that are optimized include the bunch length, peak current, horizontal emittance, and position of the minimum bunch length.

Abstract:Ultrafast and ultrashort pulsed electron beams with high peak energy facilitate important applications, such as ultrafast electron characterization and high-frequency radiation source. The development of electron gun device, which simultaneously meets the requirements of ultrashort duration, high efficiency, and miniaturization, remains a challenge. Here, a carbon nanotubes cold-cathode electron gun by a photo-electric synergistic excitation is proposed, to successfully generate an ultrafast and ultrashort pulsed electron beam with repetition frequency of 1 MHz and pulse width of 278 ps. With optimizing the gun structure, a high-performance electron beam was obtained with averaged (peak) beam current over 38 mu A (137 mA), averaged (peak) current density over 0.12 A cm(-2) (435 A cm(-2)), and electron transmittance higher than 64%, co-excited by electrostatic field of 1.88 V mu m(-1) and peak laser intensity of 7.68 MW cm(-2). This electron gun shows advantages of low excitation threshold, narrow pulse width and directly generating modulated electron beam from the laser excitation.

Abstract:Very-high-frequency(VHF) gun photoinjectors,capable of producing high-brightness and high-repetitionrate electron bunches, are some of the best electron sources for driving MHz-class repetition-rate free-electron lasers.In this study, the beam dynamics optimization of a VHF gun photoinjector for Shanghai HIgh Repetition Rate X-ray Free Electron Laser and Extreme Light Facility(SHINE) is systematically demonstrated using a genetic algorithm.Through the inclusion of the solenoid geometry as an optimization variable into the genetic algorithm, the optimum projected normalized emittance for 100 p C bunches with bunch length of 1 mm rms is reduced to 0.1 mm mrad for 100% of the particles and 0.075 mm mrad for 95% of the particles, proving that sub-100 nm emittance can be achieved in the SHINE injector using a single-cell Tsinghua University(THU) VHF gun. This emittance fulfills the requirements not only of SHINE and Linac Coherent Light Source(LCLS)-II but also of LCLS-II-High Energy(LCLS-II-HE). We demonstrate that the optimal emittance in the VHF gun injector is reduced via the optimization of the solenoid geometry, thereby reducing solenoid spherical aberration. Through the inclusion of high-order(H.O.)energy spread among the optimization objectives, the H.O.energy spread can be reduced by a factor of nearly six using a high-harmonic cavity despite a 38% emittance growth. Finally, the beam dynamics in the SHINE main accelerator show that reducing the H.O. energy spread in the injector is of great significance to improving compression efficiency and reducing bunch current spike.

Abstract:The design of electron gun, which is one part of a linac for food irradicidation, is described. In order to get the optimum model, the electric field in the gun is calculated, and the process of beam emission is simulated considering the space charge effects. Parameters measured in debugging experiment show that the facility has satisfied the design targets. The effect of solenoid’s leakage field on the beam of the electron gun has also been discussed.

Abstract:Electron beam fluorescence technology is an advanced non-contact measurement in rarefied flow fields, the fluorescence signal intensity is positively correlated with the electron beam current. The ion bombardment secondary emission electron gun is suitable for the technology. To enhance the beam current, COMSOL simulations and analyses were con-ducted to examine plasma density distribution in the discharge chamber under the effects of various conditions and the electric field distribution between the cathode and the spacer gap. The anode shape and discharge pressure conditions were optimized to increase plasma density. Additionally, an improved spacer structure was designed with the dual purpose of enhancing the electric field distribution between the cathode-spacer gap and improving vacuum dif-ferential effects. This design modification aims to increase the pass rate of secondary elec-trons. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the performance of the optimized electron gun was effectively enhanced. When the electrode voltage remains con-stant and the discharge gas pressure is adjusted to around 8 Pa, the maximum beam current was increased from 0.9mA to 1.6 mA.

Abstract:This paper reports the simulation of an electron gun. The effects of some parameters on the beam quality were studied and optimal choices were identified. It gives numerical beam qualities in common electrostatic triode gun, and the dependences on design parameters such as electrode geometries and bias voltages to these electrodes are shown. An electron beam of diameter 5 mm with energy of five kilo electron volt was assumed for simulation process. Some design parameters were identified as variable parameters in the presence of space charge. These parameters are the inclination angle of emission electrode, the applied voltage to focusing electrode, the gap width between the emission electrode and the focusing electrode and the diameter of the focusing electrode. The triode extraction system is designed and optimized by using CST software (for Particle Beam Simulations). The physical design of the extraction system is given in this paper. From the simulation results, it is concluded that the inclination angle of the emission electrode is optimized at twenty two point five degrees, the applied voltage to the focusing electrode was optimized and found at minus sixteen volts, also, the separation distance (gap between emission electrode and focusing electrode) equals to four milli meter, and the diameter of the emission electrode is fourteen milli meter.

Abstract:An electron gun and a magnetic-focus system for folded waveguide millimeter-wave traveling wave tube(TWT) were designed by electron gun code(VBGUN) based on visual boundary element method and magnetic field code(MOM) based on boundary element method.A definition of relative coefficient was used to optimize parameters,and a sensitive coefficient was defined to review the effect of fabrication-errors.The design results show that this kind of gun is easily affected both by the shape of the electrodes and the fabrication-errors.The maximum magnetic field on axis is limited by the dimension of the slow wave structure.This is the main problem for the focus system design of the folded waveguide TWT,which can be solved by augmenting the working voltage or decreasing the beam current.Consequently the electron optics system design must be synchronized with the slow wave structure.
