Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs)/graphene composites are interesting as promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors because they can well integrate the complementary features of QDs and graphene. Herein, we demonstrate a MnFe2O4 QDs/nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) material prepared by a controllable solvothermal synthesis, in which ultra-small MnFe2O4 QDs are uniformly anchored on NG surfaces. First-principles calculations elucidate that the oxygen-containing groups of graphene oxide play a crucial role in generating such a structure, and a ferrite octahedral skeleton is firstly formed followed by Mn atom insertion. Powdery MnFe2O4 QDs/NG exhibits a high specific capacitance of 517 F g(-2) within a negative potential window (-1 approximate to 0 V) in KOH electrolyte. When the lower cut off voltage is extended to -1.2 V, the specific capacitance can be increased to 905 F g(-1). And the condensed MnFe2O4 QDs@NG electrode (forming a similar structure to pitaya slices) with an astonishing loading mass of 18 mg cm(-2) can achieve high areal and volumetric capacitances (5.3 F cm(-2) and 277.6 F cm(-3)). Moreover, carbon encapsulation is favorable for the improvement of rate and cycling performance, allowing a satisfactory capacitance of 150 F g(-1) even at 200 A g(-1) as well as a superior lifetime up to 65000 cycles. These results make such materials competitive with supercapacitor electrodes and may speed up the development of QD-based electrodes for energy storage applications.
Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance Based on 3D Porous Graphene with MoO2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:Three dimensional (3D) porous graphene decorated with MoO2 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by SEM and TEM, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis and electrochemical experiments. The results revealed that the in situ formed monoclinic MoO2 nanoparticles were randomly decorated on the surface of graphene sheets and the obtained graphene–MoO2 nanohybrids were 3D porous structures. The mass ratio of molybdenum precursor with GO has effects on the specific surface area and the electrochemical properties of the nanocomposite. The M30G1 (the mass ratio of molybdenum precursor with GO was 30:1) composite electrode exhibited a higher specific capacitance and better cycling stability. The specific capacitances were 356 F/g at the current density of 0.1 A/g in KOH electrolyte, which predicted their potential application in energy storage. The electrochemical performance of M30G1 composite was also investigated in Na2SO4 electrolyte, which was poorer than that in KOH electrolyte. Therefore, the chosen of electrolyte is important to materials performance.

Abstract:A method for producing nanocomposites of transition metal oxides A(3)O(4) (where A represents Mn, Fe or Co) and graphene nanosheets (GNS) is presented. The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the formation of A(3)O(4) nanoparticles (NPs) were carried out simultaneously during the reaction. The electrochemical properties of A(3)O(4)-GNS nanocomposites as electrode materials for supercapacitors are investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. specific capacitance (708, 358 and 240 F g(-1), respectively), high energy density (20, 10 and 7 W h kg(-1), respectively) and good electrochemical stability (retention of 73%, 67.8% and 95.8%, respectively, after 1000 charge-discharge cycles). The excellent electrochemical performance of the A(3)O(4)-graphene nanocomposites indicates great potential in the application in commercial supercapacitors.

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of wearable electronic devices in contemporary society has led to heightened expectations for energy storage devices. These expectations encompass not only high power density and energy density, but also robust stability and resistance to bending. Consequently, the design and development of supercapacitors with versatile functionalities has emerged as a prominent area of research. The electrode material, which is one of the elements that can have the biggest impact on the operation of supercapacitors, has been the subject of numerous scientific advancements over the years. One promising approach is the combination of transition metal oxide and graphene material composite. By conducting a comprehensive review of relevant literature, this study synthesizes preparation methods from multiple sources, integrates the benefits of multiple technologies to develop a novel preparation method utilizing ultrasonic shock and the two-step interface self-assembly method, and compares the physical and chemical properties of different transition metal oxide mixed graphene electrode materials and their application in supercapacitors. In conclusion, the preparation methods of transition metal oxide mixed graphene electrode materials typically control their microscopic morphology in order to support structure, agglomeration, and spalling reduction, thereby enhancing the specific capacitance and cycle stability of supercapacitors and achieving the desired result of increasing specific surface area and support structure.

Abstract:As traditional energy storage devices, supercapacitors exhibit the advantage of low cost, fast charge/discharge, long-term cycling stability and high powder density. The development of electrode materials is a major task for constructing high-performance supercapacitors. Among existing transition metal oxides, NiCo2O4 has a high theoretical capacitance, which has been received much more attention. In view of the excellent electrochemical performance of NiCo2O4, herein, we highlight the research advance of NiCo2O4 and NiCo2O4/graphene composites in supercapacitors. The controllable synthesis of NiCo2O4 and the electrochemical performance are introduced firstly, including commonly used methods, such as, hydrothermal/ solvothermal method, coprecipitation, chemical bath deposition, electrochemical deposition, and template method. According to the dimension feature of graphene matrix, we classify NiCo2O4/graphene composite into two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) composite, and summarize the design principle, microstructure and their application performance in supercapacitors. Finally, we summarize the existing problems about NiCo2O4 and NiCo2O4/graphene composite, and propose the solving strategies and future perspectives. The major purpose is to provide theoretical guidance for related researchers in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Adjusting the microstructure is an available strategy to obtain high-performance electrode materials. Herein, we propose a promising and simple hydrothermal method to prepare Co3O4 with improved electrochemical performance by adjusting its microstructure. Co3O4 with different morphologies in the form of band-like, chrysanthemum-like and feather-like can be easily obtained by adjusting the amount of urea in solutions. After analysis, the band-like and feather-like Co3O4 are dominated by surface-control during the oxidation reaction process, while chrysanthemum-like Co3O4 is dominated by diffusion-control during the oxidation reaction process. The experimental results show that the chrysanthemum-like structure of Co3O4 composed of nanowires can be obtained when urea addition is 7 mmol, and it exhibits exciting specific capacity (122.3 mAh g−1 at 1 A/g) and higher rate capability (70% at 20 A/g). Surprisingly, the specific capacity is still 100% of the initial value after 3000 cycles. The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with activated carbon as anode and Co3O4 as cathode outputs high specific energy (35.3 Wh/kg at 788.8 W/Kg), good cycle stability (capacity retention rate of 82.6% after 10,000 cycles) and excellent coulombic efficiency. These results fully demonstrate that Co3O4 prepared in this work has great potential as an energy storage electrode material.

Abstract:The high electrical conductivity and high specific surface area of graphene are traditionally regarded as the most intriguing features for its promise as the electrode material for supercapacitors. In this perspective, we highlight that from the engineering point of view, the unique colloidal chemistry of chemically functionalized graphene is the key property that has made graphene stand out as a promising nanoscale building block for constructing unique nanoporous electrodes for capacitive energy storage. We present several examples to demonstrate how the non-covalent colloidal forces between graphene sheets can be harnessed to engineer the nanostructure of graphene-based bulk electrodes for supercapacitors based on both the electrical double layer storage and the redox reaction or pseudo-capacitance mechanisms. The colloidal engineering strategy can be extended to enable other nanomaterials to achieve high energy storage performance.

Abstract:This investigation emphasizes on the facile, one spot in-situ microwave irradiation method used to synthesize cuprous oxide/graphene (Cu2O/G) nanocomposite without any templates. Microwave irradiation method assisted the conversion of graphene oxide to graphene in presence of Cu2+ ions in the water medium, and self-assembled Cu2O on graphene layers reveal the resultant Cu2O/G nanocomposite. X-ray diffraction pattern reflects the structure of Cu2O nanoparticles and graphene sheet. The morphology of electrode materials was studied with SEM and TEM to confirm the intercalation of Cu2O on graphene sheets. FTIR analysis confirmed the reduction of oxygen functional groups. The cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge analysis in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte reveals the electrochemical properties. The specific capacitance of Cu2O/G nanocomposite is 611 Fg−1 compared to the graphene (290 Fg−1) and Cu2O (160 Fg−1) at a current density of 1 Ag−1. The experiment under similar conditions revealed 100% retention in capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of Cu2O/G nanocomposite suggests the excellent supercapacitor performance with higher ion transport ensuring enhanced electrochemical performance.
Facile Synthesis of Mn3O4 Nanoparticles Decorated Graphene as Enhanced Performance Electrode for Supercapacitor

Abstract:Graphene was prepared by using the plant stem as a biotemplate through high temperature carbonization and Mn3O4/graphene composites were then prepared via a simple hydrothermal process. The surface morphology and structure of the Mn3O4/graphene hybrids were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Raman spectra, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrogram (XPS), N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and electrochemical test. The results showed that the metal oxide nanoparticles were uniformly supported on the surface of graphene. Judging from the XRD, XPS and Raman, we could acquire that the Mn3O4 nanoparticle was in the crystal form while the average crystallite size was about 21 nm. The composites exhibited excellent specific capacitance as high as 196 F/g and the capacitance of the composites was 88% retained after 1000 cycles in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte at a charging rate of 2 A/g. The superior electrochemical properties could be due to the improved accessible area for ions in electrolytes and enhanced conductivities. The present study provides a facile way to design a high-performance Mn3O4/graphene based supercapacitor electrode and the concept is extendable to other pseudo capacitive electrodes.

Abstract:Metal oxide nanoparticles equipped graphene with outstanding performance display broad application. Compared with graphene sheets loaded nanoparticles, such 3D architecture not only has the intrinsic perfor-mance of 2D graphene and nanoparticles, but also provides advanced functionality in many aspects. Up to now, many strategies have been explored to construct 3D graphene hybrids. However, the application of extra agents and/or agglomeration nanoparticles has a detrimental impact on particle applications. Herein, we present a molecular self-assembly strategy for producing high-quality 3D graphene microstructures with uniform metal oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles by directly deriving 3D amphiphilic Zn(MAA)2 precursors with a well-layered structure into 3D graphene hybrid. Notably, the organic part of organized Zn(MAA)2 molecules play a struc-turally crucial function in the formation of the graphene layers. It not only guides the ordered self-assemblies, but also facilitates the rapid in-situ formation of graphene structures by generating lots of allyl radicals in the heating process. Meanwhile, during the formation of graphene layers, ZnO NPs generated from carboxylate groups of Zn (MAA)2 molecules penetrate into the graphene. The as-obtained ZG-500 HSs as supercapacitor electrode displays a specific capacitance of 272.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on ZG-500 HSs and activated carbon provides an energy density of 13.4 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 387.5 W kg-1. This novel strategy opens up a potential and green route to high quality 3D graphene hybrids for supercapacitor.

Graphene-quantum-dots Induced NiCo2S4 with Hierarchical-Like Hollow Nanostructure for Supercapacitors with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance

Abstract:As a new class of zero-dimensional (0D) carbon nanomaterial, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted increasing attentions due to their unique properties of both graphene and quantum dots. In this paper, GQDs-decorated hierarchical-like hollow NiCo2S4 nanostructures are fabricated through simple two-step hydrothermal reactions. Compared with the bare NiCo2S4 nanowires, it is found that the surface morphology and internal structure have been changed with the introduction of the GQDs during the similar growth process. The unique nanostructures have resulted in better electrochemical performance for supercapacitors, such as good rate capability, high specific capacitance (678.22 F g(-1) at the current density of 0.2 A g(-1)) and enhanced cycling stability (94% retention after 5000 cycles), due to the lower impedance, larger specific surface area, more interspace and pathways for both ion diffusion and volume changes. These results show that the introduction of the GQDs during the fabrication process could be a feasible route to obtain novel nanostructures, and the GQDs decorated nanocomposites are promising for the development of next generation electrochemical devices. In-situ Growth of N-doped Graphene-Like Carbon/mof Nanocomposites for High-Performance Supercapacitor

Abstract:Graphene-like materials and metal-organic framework (MOF) materials hold significant promise for advanced energy systems. However, the accumulation of two-dimensional (2D) material and the low conductivity of MOF have seriously affected their practical application. The universal method for synthesizing homogeneous nitrogen-doped graphene-like carbon/metal-organic framework (N-GLC/MOF) composites, including N-GLC/MOF-74, N-GLC/ZIF-8, N-GLC/Cu-BTC, and N-GLC/FeCo-PBA was presented. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the two components, the N-GLC/MOF-74 composite exhibits a specific capacitance of 470.18 F/g at 1 A/g and maintains a coulombic efficiency of 95.04% at 5 A/g over 5500 cycles. Our work lays a solid foundation for the design and synthesis of N-GLC-based composites. We anticipate that this research will furnish valuable insights for the advancement of N-GLC/MOF composites, with a primary focus on enhancing supercapacitor performance.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped graphene is of great interest for energy storage applications due to its improved local electronic structures compared with undoped graphene. However, a tunable method for the preparation of heteroatom-doped graphene with a special microstructure is still worth developing. Herein, a novel nitrogen-doped graphene with different microstructures is facilely synthesized via an in situ interlamination self-assembling method that employs the in situ formed Fe3(PO4)2 and organoamine as the catalyst and carbon source, respectively. By tuning the alkyl chain length in organoamine, octylamine and dodecylamine, bubble-like and sheet-like nitrogen-doped graphene are obtained, respectively. In three-electrode supercapacitor tests, besides the double-layer capacitance, the as-prepared graphene electrode material indeed exhibits pseudocapacitance due to the N-rich feature, delivering a good rate capability (166 F g–1 at 20 A g–1) and cyclic performance (96% capacitance retention over 20,000 cycles at 20 A g–1). More importantly, the symmetrical supercapacitor studies reveal the promising practicality due to the achieved excellent energy and power densities together with long-term cyclability. Thereby, this work establishes a new milestone for the facile synthesis of heteroatom-doped graphene with a desired microstructure for energy storage and other applications.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have attracted intense attention due to their great potential to meet the demand of both high energy density and power density in many advanced technologies. Various carbon-based nanocomposites are currently pursued as supercapacitor electrodes because of the synergistic effect between carbon (high power density) and pseudo-capacitive nanomaterials (high energy density). This feature article aims to review most recent progress on 3D (3D) carbon based nanostructures for advanced supercapacitor applications in view of their structural intertwinement which not only create the desired hierarchical porous channels, but also possess higher electrical conductivity and better structural mechanical stability. The carbon nanostructures comprise of CNTs-based networks, graphene-based architectures, hierarchical porous carbon-based nanostructures and other even more complex carbon-based 3D configurations. Their advantages and disadvantages are compared and summarized based on the results published in the literature. In addition, we also discuss and view the ongoing trends in materials development for advanced supercapacitors.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials have been full of vigor and tremendous potentiality for application in supercapacitors due to its variety of unique properties such as electronic properties, simple synthesis, etc.In developing new macroscopic nanostructured graphene materials for supercapacitors, considerable efforts have been made by the scientist including our research group. In this account, we describe our development of the construction of the assembled graphene especially fiber and foam, which have great potential in addressing the challenges in the synthesis of graphene-based electrode materials for supercapacitors. As the supercapacitors are reviewed in this article, they are accordant with the rapid development of flexible, lightweight, and wearable-electronic devices, overcoming the major some drawbacks of conventional bulk supercapacitors. We hope that this summary will benefit the further research of graphene-based materials for the applications in electrochemical energy storage devices and beyond.

Abstract:Multi-element transition-metal oxides have attracted much attention in the field of energy storage due to their excellent specific capacitance and multiplicity. Herein, Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 hollow electrode materials were prepared by a novel solvothermal method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a soft template, followed by a subsequent annealing treatment. The materials were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and BET, and their supercapacitor properties were tested on an electrochemical workstation. The unique hollow structure of Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 can act as a "charge reservoir" for exposing more active sites and increases its specific surface area to 74.67 m 2 ·g −1 . In the three-electrode system, the electrode material of Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 exhibits a high specific capacitance (2952.5 F·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 and 540 F·g −1 at 15 A·g −1 ). Meanwhile, the electrode material still possesses 80.8% of the original capacitance after 3000 cycles at a current density of 15 A·g −1 , demonstrating good cycling stability. Finally, the electrode material was assembled with activated carbon to form an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). The electrochemical performance of the ASC device tested in the two-electrode system exhibited an energy density of 118.2 Wh·kg −1 when the power density was 1428 W·kg −1 . In addition, the ASC device could light up a small light bulb. The redox reaction kinetics was controlled by both diffusion and capacitive behaviors. With increasing scanning rate, the capacitive contribution gradually dominated the kinetics. The electrode material of Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 Co 2 O 4 offers possibilities for actual applications in the future.

Abstract:The performance of supercapacitor electrodes is determined largely by their components and structure. Graphene has revealed the intriguing potential in developing high performance electrodes. To optimize the electrochemical properties, hierarchically structured graphene networks have been utilized to prepare the electrode of supercapacitors and exhibited the specific surface area larger than the theoretical value and the specific capacitance close to the maximum of single-layer graphene nanosheets. When graphene is combined with other high capacitance components such as nanostructured metal oxide and conductive polymers, the hierarchical composite electrodes exhibited a large development space for high performance supercapacitors. Herein, we review their recent advances and discuss the effect of molecular structures (oxygen functionalities, heteroatom doping), deposited metal oxide and conductive polymer nanoparticles on the performance of hierarchically structured graphene supercapacitor electrodes.
