Abstract:Colorful paintings were widely used to study the colour quality of museum LED lightings.Several psychophysical experiments were conducted in recent years, to study the colour appearance and the observer preference on paintings under LED lightings with various illuminance levels, colour temperatures, colour fidelity levels, and sizes and shapes of colour gamut.The results were compared with other researchers'' worldwide.The optimal colour temperature for museum lightings was found to be very culture dependent.In Asia, it was found between 3 000 K and 4 000 K.The colour fidelity and the colour gamut of LED lightings have significant effect on the visual perception on painting.It all points toward a spectrum tunable lighting system for illuminating fine art paintings.

Abstract:Recent years the subject of colour quality of LED lighting in museum was extensively studied. It was found that different experimental results can be effectively described as Comfort Zone in terms of illuminance and colour temperature of the museum illuminations. Work of updating colour rendering index for LED lighting can also be used for museum lighting applications. Recent studies on museum lighting and some related work are reviewed in this paper. Important recommendations about how to achieve high colour quality museum lighting are also given.

Abstract:It is possible to assess the damage to artworks by measuring different physical and chemical parameters. One of the most important parameters is colour difference, which is a consequence of chemical changes in the material. CIE 157:2004 'Control of Damage to Museum Objects by Optical Radiation' classifies museum collections into four groups, according to different levels of light fastness. However, these classes were developed from research using traditional light sources. Even though LED technology is becoming more popular, there is no advanced evaluation of colour fading or a colour change test for contemporary artworks. This study established that the CIE 157:2004 method, based on threshold effective radiant exposure, can be applied to an actual ageing test of ultraviolet-blocked light sources including two types of white LEDs and one traditional halogen lamp. The results also present a colour fading model that can be used in museum LED lighting to predict the colour difference in contemporary photographic materials for short- and long-term exhibition. This study also provides a revised light dosage classification of modern photographic materials for museums. Moreover, the verification studies can be used as a conceptual reference for assessing the damage potential of other art materials under the tunable multi-LED system of the future.

Abstract:This study is based on the survey data of Zhongshan Art Museum in Dalian. To investigate changes in the emotional response of visitors to various lighting conditions. The museum is divided into two areas: display space and non-display space. The optical parameters of each space and space are measured. Data analysis was used to evaluate the impact of museum interior lighting on visitors’ mood in different lighting environments. It is pointed out that the light intensity and the contrast of CCT, environment are the main viewpoints of the evaluation index. The degree of comfort of visitors in each space was discussed according to the scores of 11 emotional indicators. At the same time, the influence of illumination parameters on the mood of visitors was analyzed by investigating the illumination and color temperature in different scene modes, visual psychology of observer evaluation and so on. The range of illumination and color temperature that is most suitable for visitors is obtained.

Abstract:In the art museum, lighting plays a crucial role in visitors' understanding and appreciation of exhibits. This paper mainly explores the influence of different lighting mode (general lighting, accent lighting, and mixed lighting) and correlated color temperature (CCTs) (4000 K and 2700 K) changes on the observers' psychology to find the best lighting environment. Based on the simulation carried out at the National Museum of Western Art in Japan, we made six diverse lighting designs. 31 observers were invited to evaluate each scheme, and the results of subjective evaluation were analyzed by means of one-way analysis of variance and the paired sample T-test. According to the results of data analysis, suggestions can be given for art gallery lighting design. It is not recommended to use general lighting alone in art museums, and it is better to use mixed lighting. When the CCT is 4000 K, only accent lighting can be used. When the CCT is 2700 K, the mixed lighting effect is better.

Abstract:Colour in a Chinese painting not only conveys cultural, historical, and philosophical concepts but also carries specific symbolic meanings and emotions, possessing a high level of artistic value. However, the sensitivity of Chinese paintings to light results in exhibition environments being characterised by low illuminance and low colour temperature. Therefore, accurately assessing colour preferences in Chinese paintings under such conditions is an issue that needs to be addressed. This study conducted simulated experiments in real museum exhibition halls, with 36 participants providing subjective evaluations of Chinese paintings, to explore the effects of various lighting parameters on colour preferences. Through statistical analysis and multiple linear regression, the relationship between lighting parameters and colour preferences in a Chinese painting was determined, and an evaluation model was established. This research outcome provides important mathematical tools for selecting appropriate lighting and developing dedicated lighting for Chinese paintings, ensuring the artistic inheritance of Chinese painting colours.

Abstract:Lighting design for art exhibitions has a significant impact on the enjoyment and understanding of the displayed artworks. In particular, the selection of the light sources and the design of the museum space affect the visitors’ visual perceptions of the artworks and their color appearance. This project investigated some of the potential factors—the correlated color temperature (CCT) of the illumination, the overall color content of the painting and the lightness of its background—affecting a painting’s color appearance and appreciation in a museum setting. The study involved a survey conducted in the laboratory with both naïve observers and lighting experts. The CCT of the lighting was found to be the main factor affecting the painting’s appearance and the observers’ overall preference for the lighting arrangements, whereas the overall hue content of the painting and the background lightness had a minor influence. Furthermore, it has been found that the perceived brightness increases along with the CCT.

Abstract:High flexibility of LED offers possibility to adjust parameters of lighting, like CCT (correlated color temperature), luminance, and spectral power distribution so that lighting can be made to have positive effects on people. This experiment investigated the effects of available lightings on visual performance and atmosphere feeling. Lightings in the experiment included: LED, energy-saving lamp, tungsten, and a smart lighting product from Philips. 10 participants were asked to complete the experiment tasks and a questionnaire. The experimental tasks include: critical flickering frequency (CFF), calculation, proofreading, reading comprehension and a concentration test (d2 test). They were designed to test the visual performance of participants. The questionnaire was made up of categorical judgment of the atmosphere of lighting environment. It was designed to study the influences of lighting on people's perception of atmosphere in the environment. The result revealed that Hue-energetic (6300K, 150cd/m 2 ) made people performed best and that CCT and perception of brightness affected people's feeling of activeness and comfort. Furthermore, it also confirmed that blue light could trigger energetic arousal.

Abstract:The interior zone of tunnel belongs to the mesopic domain.In the present study,3 types of mesopic model are employed to analyze the influence of LED color temperature on lighting luminance.Results show that,LED can facilitate higher perception brightness for people in the interior zone,and the higher the color temperature of LED is,the higher perception brightness people can obtain.Lighting luminance design modified by the mesopic models can save 8％～ 28％ energy consumption.With the range of 1 ～ 3cd/m2,luminance calculated by MOVE ranks the highest,followed by MES2 and S model.Adopting the achromatic visual task,MOVE model is more accordance with the actual tunnel driving environment.

Abstract:This paper investigates the relationship between observer preference response and the light source with the same CIE-Ra, but different CIE-Ri value (i=1 similar to 8) in museum lightings. It is conducted by assessing colour preference response of the paintings under the lighting sources having the same illuminance level, correlated colour temperature (CCT), the same CIE-Ra, but different CIE-Ri values. Eleven observers assessed 6 paintings under 11 pair of test sources. The results show that it could be not enough to evaluate lighting quality in museum only by using CRI Ra index; the adding of main colour-based Ri value is rather expected in the future.

Abstract:A psychophysical experiment has been carried out to investigate the impact of dynamic lighting parameters on atmosphere perception. The experiment was conducted in a purpose-built LED lighting lab, where the lighting could be spatially and dynamically changed and colorimetric specifications controlled. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of speed, saturation and brightness of dynamic lighting on the perceived atmosphere, preference and suitability for certain spaces. Twenty native Chinese observers participated in the experiment, each assessing the environment under dynamic lighting conditions using 21 atmosphere terms. The results show significant gender differences on some scales such as safe, spatial, chilly, formal, preference and office-like. Factor analysis showed that the 21 scales can be grouped into three categories: tenseness, coziness and liveliness, and that a living room-like atmosphere evaluation is consistent with coziness. Dynamic lighting does have a significant influence on atmosphere perception. A more saturated LED light would lead to less tense, more cosy, more safe and more lively atmosphere perceptions. By increasing the speed, a more tense and less cosy atmosphere can be generated. Medium speed offers the most lively and preferred atmosphere. Brighter lighting will generate a less tense environment. More saturated colour and a slower speed will produce a more living room-like environment, but it seems that such dynamic lighting is not suitable for an office-like environment.

Abstract:This study investigated the main visual perceptions and the optimal LED lighting parameters for viewing museum paintings. Oil and gouache paintings seen under different LED illuminants were assessed using the categorical judgement method. It was found that visibility' and warmth' are the main perceptions for viewing paintings. The results showed that a correlated colour temperature around 3500K, a negative deviation of the target from the blackbody locus and a high colour rendering index can achieve satisfactory results. The difference between colour fidelity-based colour rendering indices and colour preference-based colour rendering indices for a museum application was also explored.

Abstract:Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) significantly influences mood, comfort, and potentially overall health. However, its impact on visitors' visual experience in museum design remains insufficiently explored. This study aims to investigate the effects of different CCT settings (3000 K, 4500 K, 6000 K) on visual comfort within a simulated museum space. Using 3D modeling and physiological recordings, 200 participants assessed visual comfort. Consistent findings support that a CCT of 4500 K provides the highest comfort level, aligning with the observed trend in eye gaze duration. Pupil diameter variability indicates that greater comfort is associated with higher CCT values. While differences in heart rate variability (HRV) were not statistically significant, there is a tendency for HRV to increase with longer fixation durations. These findings challenge literature advocating for lower CCT values in museum lighting, emphasizing the need to balance conservation and visitor experience. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the optimization of visual comfort in museum lighting design through a CCT value of 4500 K, offering valuable insights for practitioners. However, limitations include potential scene disturbance and the simulated environment. Future studies should diversify samples and explore a broader range of CCT values.

Abstract:This research proposes the use of colour-changing light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires to supplement daylight for more sensory working or living environments. An experiment was conducted to examine a room lit by a mixture of natural light from window walls and artificial light from LED luminaires which could be programmed to produce four colour lights: orange (correlated colour temperature around 2000K), yellow (around 3000K), green (around 7000K) and blue (around 8000K). Participants were required to answer questions pertaining to function (naturalness of selected objects) and sensation (brightness, relaxation, pleasantness and interest). Generally, when daylight was mixed with warm colour, such as orange or yellow, the room was more interesting. Further comparison pointed out that the green light might have a negative effect for daylight perception. The most important finding is that when daylight was supplemented with the blue LED luminaires, the room was most relaxing, pleasing and natural, which was preferred by participants. The findings of this research would inform architects, designers to decide on how to use coloured luminaires as a supplementary light source for daylight to enhance sensory experience in buildings.

Abstract:In our recent work, the colour preference of several LED white lights with different correlated colour temperatures (CCT) was investigated with a wide selection of objects. The results highlighted the dominant effect of light itself on the colour preference of lighting. In this study, we similarly implemented two psychophysical experiments with the same lights but with nothing in the light booth. It was found that the subjective ratings for the lit environment of the empty booth were quite close to those of the previous studies that used various coloured objects. Such a finding corroborates our former conclusion that light dominates colour preference and we suspect that this finding can be attributed either to the colour memory of the observers or to the subconscious effect of human vision. Thus, it seems that for general multi-CCT conditions where the light sources do not have very different gamut shapes or object desaturation/oversaturation properties, the preferred white light could be determined by simply asking the observers to rate their preference for the lit environment of the empty light booth. To verify this wild and interesting conclusion and further clarify its applicability, follow-up studies are needed.
Effects of Lighting Method on Atmosphere and Color Perception in Children's Clothing Stores

Abstract:In this paper LED light sources were used to simulate the lighting environment of three different physical parameters in children's clothing stores. 38 observers were invited to simulate consumers. The semantic difference scale method of psychophysical experiment was used to measure the corresponding lighting environment atmosphere and four perceptions (preference, attractiveness, color fidelity and softness) of five colors children's clothing (green, yellow, flower pattern, white and red). The results of principal component analysis showed that the two main dimensions of the lighting atmosphere were discrimination and coziness. The use of complex mixed lighting method to illuminate yellow, white and green children’s clothing can increase the positive response of consumers. Consumers' emotional responses to five colors of clothing in children's clothing stores were generally low under the general lighting method. Under the accent lighting method, the color of the red children's clothing was more real, which can produce some positive impact on the consumer's psychology and consumers believed that the lighting of flower-patterned children's clothing was softer.

Abstract:An experiment was conducted to investigate the white illumination in a room and to assess the appearance of the room and colour patches in it. The room was illuminated by LED lighting providing 25 different illuminant chromaticities distributed around the blackbody locus. The whiteness results confirmed the findings of Rea and Freyssinier that the locus exhibiting a white appearance is located above and below the blackbody locus when the correlated colour temperature is above and below 4000 K, respectively. The appearance of the room and the colour patches were assessed using typical colour appearance attributes including brightness, colourfulness and hue composition. Various visual phenomena have been revealed by the results. The effects of correlated colour temperature and Duv on the appearance attributes were also examined.

Abstract:The lighting environment has an important influence on the psychological and physical aspects of a person. On certain occasions, reasonable lighting design can regulate people's emotions and improve their feelings of comfort in a space. Besides, specific lighting can create a specific atmosphere according to space requirements. However, in the study of an individual's affective impressions, there is still some uncertainty about how colored lights affect an individual's moods and impressions toward visual objects. This research improves the understanding of the emotional impact of colored light in space. To better understand the lighting environment in the observation process, the project studied the effects of four groups of lights (green, blue, red, and yellow) on the participants' moods and impressions. Participants watched two sets of visual images under four different lighting conditions and provided feedback on their emotions and evaluations through the Multiple Mood States Scale, Two-Dimensional Mood Scale, and Semantic Differential Scale. The results show that different colors of light have a significant effect on mood, and red light can arouse emotional changes to calm, irritated, relaxed, nervous, stability, and pleasure. At the same time, different colors of light have a certain relevance to participants' impressions and this provides further research value for the design of the colored light environment in an individual's affective impressions. Therefore, this study discusses the feasibility of colored lights as a display method, which has potential application prospects for constructing different space atmospheres.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of light-emitting diode LED lighting on elderly people's color discrimination and preference, to improve the lighting environment for elderly people. In this study, experiments were conducted under LED lighting with two different spectra with color-correlated temperature [CCT] of 2800K and 6000K, and three different illuminance levels 30lx; 100lx; 1000lx. Six elderly observers aged 55-65 years participated in the experiments and were exposed to each lighting condition to finish one trial of a color discrimination test Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue Test and a 7-scale, 6-item preference evaluation test. We conclude that elderly people perform better in color discrimination with higher CCT of LED light sources, which compensate for their decreased lens transmission at short wavelength. Their performance also increases with higher illuminance 30lx-1000lx of LED lighting. Meanwhile, they prefer higher illuminance, which makes them find the lighting environment more comfortable, brighter, and better for reading; but for CCT, although they feel a higher CCT is better for reading, they still have different tastes regarding CCT of light sources. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Correlated color temperature (CCT) is one of the most important lighting factors to influence the subjective perceptions, while there currently are few researches involving a wide range of CCT to study the comfort and preference within specific indoor scenarios. Therefore a psychophysical experiment with the method of forced choice was carried out in a light-emitting diode (LED) light booth with a panel of twelve observers to evaluate these estimations with different combinations of CCT and illuminance. The results show that Kruithof’s rule is just a qualitative conclusion rather than an accurate expression about pleasing combination of CCT and illuminance, and that illuminance is not a significant factor to influence the estimations if it is limited within a moderate range. The detailed analysis indicates that CCT has significant impact on the subjective comfort and preference, and a set of models were proposed to predict these subjective perceptions for the scenarios of relaxing and working.
