Abstract:For investigating the effect of noise type on Chinese speech intelligibility of children, subjective listening tests were performed with 5 different types of noises (the impact noise, traffic noise, fan noise, Chinese speech-shaped noise and babble noise). The listeners were children in grades 2, 4 and 6 (7-8, 9-10 and 11-12 years old respectively). The experiments were carried out in two classrooms of different reverberation times (RT, 0.8s and 1.3s), under two signal-to-noise ratios (SNR, 0dB and 10dB). The speech intelligibility scores rise with the decreasing of RT and increasing of SNR and grade. The scores vary among different noise type under the same RT, SNR and grade. The impact noise has the highest intelligibility scores among all the noises for the both reverberation conditions, and the speech-shaped and babble noises result in lower scores than other noises. In general, the lower the grade is, the larger the increase of intelligibility score is with the increase of SNR. The largest score improvement occurs for the cases of babble noise. The scores of lower grades are more affected by the noises, especially by the speech-shaped and babble noises in the longer RT.
