Abstract:The controlled growth of carbon nitride (CN) films with tailored electronic properties and surface area is quite challenging due to the solid-state reaction and the lack of efficient interaction between C-N monomers and substrates. Herein, controlled growth of CN films over robust carbon nanotubes (CNT) fiber fabric is reported, which is obtained by either direct calcination of melamine on their surface, that yields a bulk material, or by its chemical vapor deposition resulting in hybrid films. These materials are effective electrodes consisting of high surface-area CN containing CNT fiber fabrics acting as a scaffold and a highly conducting built-in current collector. The results confirm that CNTs act as nucleation centers for the formation of CN films, forming close contact at the CN/CNT interphase, and resulting in efficient charge transfer upon illumination and enhanced electrochemical surface area.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) is a promising material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) H2 generation due to its appropriate band gap, low cost and nontoxicity. However, current techniques, including drop casting and spin coating, fail to deposit uniform g-CN films on solid substrates. In this work, we report on a thermal vapor condensation method of depositing uniform g-CN films on various substrates using melamine as precursor. Surface morphology and film thickness of the g-CN film can be effectively tuned by changing the substrate and precursor mass, respectively. The g-CN film shows photocurrent density as high as 0.12 mA cm−2, the highest to date for g-CN based photoanode, at the bias of 1.55 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode with Na2S as the sacrificial reagent. The improved photoresponse of the g-CN film results from intimate contact between the film and the substrate, enhanced light absorption, decreased charge transport and charge transfer resistance with the increase of the process temperature. The success enables the g-CN films being effectively applied in multiple electronic and photoelectronic devices.
Water-Assisted Ions in Situ Intercalation for Porous Polymeric Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheets with Superior Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance

Abstract:Two-dimension layered polymeric carbon nitride possessing unique electronic structure and high specific surface area exhibits immense potentials for visible light driven photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production by the decomposition of water molecules. Herein, porous polymeric carbon nitride nanosheets were obtained by lithium chloride ions in situ intercalating bulk materials in thermal polycondensation process and followed by liquid exfoliation in water. The porous nanosheets show two-dimension layered structure with the thickness of 2-3 nm, a high density in-plane pores with 2-3 nm diameter, a higher surface area (186.3 m(2)g(-1)), enlarged bandgap (by 0.16 eV), prolonged charge carrier lifetime, enhanced electronic transport ability, increased charge carrier density and improved photocurrent responses, which could significantly give rise to photocatalytic activity. The results highlight the crucial role of 2D porous structure, high specific surface area and unique electronic structure on the photocatalytic performance of polymeric carbon nitride materials. Polymerization Improvement of Graphitic Carbon Nitride Films Derived from Melamine and Thiourea

Abstract:The well‐polymerized g‐CN film can be fabricated by a thermal vapor condensation method using thiourea (TU) and melamine. The carbodiimide (HN⁐C⁐NH) generated by TU greatly promotes the melamine growth into larger conjugated structures through polycondensation, cycloaddition/addition, and hydrogen shift reactions. The photocurrent density of the well‐polymerized g‐CN film can be improved up to 404 μA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. Deposition of low‐cost, efficient, and environmentally friendly graphitic carbon nitride (g‐CN) films as photoanodes is a crucial step for constructing photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells and exploring their PEC performance. Currently, the improvement of the photocurrent density of g‐CN films is badly needed for their practical applications in PEC water splitting. Enhancing the g‐CN crystallinity by optimizing their synthesis conditions only through screening appropriate reactant precursors is insufficient for this purpose. Herein, using melamine and thiourea precursors with mass ratio 5:1, the degree of polymerization of g‐CN thin films is successfully improved by a thermal vapor condensation method. The obtained pure g‐CN exhibits a remarkably enhanced photocurrent density of 404.4 μA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrodes. Theoretical calculations reveal that the continuous attachment of small carbodiimide (HN═C═NH) mainly generated by thiourea to the melamine matrix facilitates the formation of large‐area conjugated structure, which fundamentally determines better charge carrier separation and transfer thereby enhancing the PEC performance. This work realizes the synthesis of well‐polymerized g‐CN films with improved PEC activity and offers a computational understanding for the nucleation and growth mechanism of the polycrystalline g‐CN.

Abstract:Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride , g-C3N4 , is a new organic photocatalyst with semiconductor property and proper band gap of 2.7eV,which possesses high thermal and chemical stability. In this paper,the structure,physicochemical properties and preparation methods of g-C3N4 are reviewed. As the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 is generally low,the methods to make it an effective photocatalyst are summarized,including texture modification,elements doping and constructing heterojunction with other materials,copolymerization and sulfur-mediated function. In addition,the applications of g-C3N4 for photocatalytic water splitting and degradation of organic water pollutants under visible light are discussed. At the end,it can be concluded that the developing tendency of g-C3N4 as a photocatalyst is exploring and further optimizing the preparation and modification methods to improve its photocatalytic activity.
Mesoporous Carbon Nitride with -Electron-Rich Domains and Polarizable Hydroxyls Fabricated via Solution Thermal Shock for Visible-Light Photocatalysis

Abstract:Carbon nitride semiconductors are competitive candidates for visible-light-responsive photocatalysts, but encounter weakened exciton dissociation arising from the elevated Coulomb force of singlet Frenkel excitons with narrowing bandgaps. We overcome this contradiction by co-infusing pi-electron-rich domains and polarizable hydroxyl units into mesoporous carbon nitride, realized by solution thermal shock. The embedded delocalized pi-conjugated aromatic domains derived from nonconjugated macromolecules downshift the conduction band edge and contribute to spatial separation of photogenerated electrons in the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and holes in the highest occupied molecular orbital. Meanwhile, polarizable hydroxyls induce distinct electron flow from heptazine-based skeletons to periphery sites and enhance water adsorption as well as proton reduction capacity. Consequently, the polymeric carbon nitride delivers an enhanced hydrogen evolution rate that is 17.5 times larger than thermally treated counterparts derived from urea fabricated via conventional strategies. These results show that our strategy can infuse different functional motifs into carbon nitride and thus improve photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) is considered to be an attractive material for application in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting cells and photoelectronic devices. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate high-quality CN films. Herein, high-quality CN films have been synthesized via closespaced thermal copolymerization of dicyandiamide and cyanuric acid for the first time. This method can not only prepare continuous and uniform CN films that grow directly on a conductive substrate but also effectively adjust the film structure (thickness and morphology).

Abstract:Homogeneous deposition of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) onto substrates on a large scale is of great interest in recyclable photocatalysis. However, g-C3N4 films prepared via conventional thermal condensation are thick and have problem of bad interface contacts with substrate, resulting in a poor photocatalytic performance. Herein, a thermal vapor condensation approach is developed for the growth of homogeneous g-C3N4 thin film on large area carbon fiber cloths (CFC). CFC serves as the template to guide g-C3N4 growth, resulting in a conformal thin overlayer of g-C3N4 on CFC surface. Moreover, a robust interaction between g-C3N4 and carbon fibers is achieved. A close stacking of g-C3N4 interlayers coupled with an efficient electron-withdrawing ability of carbon fiber expedites charge transfer and suppresses charge recombination. Consequently, the film exhibits an enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution compared with g-C3N4 powder. A solid–gas bi-phase photocatalytic system is also constructed for manifesting remarkable superiority in gas evolution than solid–gas-liquid tri-phase system. Moreover, the sample is highly durable and recyclable, ensuring a robust, economical and environmentally friendly photocatalyst films.

Abstract:Very recently, it has been shown that an abundant material, polymeric carbon nitride, can produce hydrogen from water under visible-light irradiation in the presence of a sacrificial donor [1]. We will present here the preparation and characterization of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) films on semiconducting substrates by thermal condensation of dicyandiamide precursor under inert gas conditions. Structural and surface morphological studies of the carbon nitride films suggest a high porosity of g-C3N4 thin film consisting of a network of nanocrystallites. Photo-electrochemical investigations show upon cathodic polarization light-induced hydrogen evolution for a wide range of proton concentrations in the aqueous electrolyte. Additionally, Synchrotron radiation based photoelectron spectroscopy has been applied to study the surface/near-surface chemical composition of the utilized g-C3N4 film photocathodes. Surface Engineering of Carbon Nitride Electrode by Molecular Cobalt Species and Their Photoelectrochemical Application

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) has been widely regarded as a promising photocatalyst since the discovery of its capability for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, we developed a functional CN film on a conductive fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode by using a microprinting-based direct growth method. Furthermore, the photoelectrochemical performance of the derived CN@FTO film was demonstrated to be enhanced by incorporating molecular cobalt species. The reduced charge transport resistance in the cobalt-modified CN@FTO films is suggested to accelerate the charge-carrier transfer rate and thus to improve the performance in photoelectrochemical application. The approach is versatile and can be further optimized by selecting a proper "ink" solution and modifier on various conductive substrates.

Abstract:Polymeric carbon nitride is a promising candidate for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution but mostly just shows moderate activity because of its inefficient charge separation and sluggish surface reaction kinetics. Phase-based heterostructures, especially crystal-phase heterostructures that are composed of identical compositions with different crystal phases, can endow nanomaterials with promising properties and efficient photocatalysis applications. In this study, a novel crystalline hexagonal-C3N4/g-C3N4 hetero-phase junction was synthesized using a direct in situ alkali salt template coupled with organic solvents strategy. High hydrophilicity was obtained because of the synergistic effect between alkali salt and organic solvents in the polycondensation process. The greatly increased separation and transfer efficiency of charge carriers and the improved proton absorption in the surface reaction of the photocatalyst were achieved by the constructed phase junctions between the crystalline hexagonal-C3N4 and amorphous g-C3N4 decorated with numerous hydrophilic groups. Thus, the carbon nitride hetero-phase junction exhibited dramatically enhanced photocatalytic performance in hydrogen evolution and excellent cycling stability under visible light irradiation. This work presents a novel insight into phase engineering based on carbon nitride materials with surface functional modification for an efficient photocatalytic activity.

Regulation on Polymerization Degree and Surface Feature in Graphitic Carbon Nitride Towards Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution under Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:A kind of graphitic carbon nitride (TSC-550) with high polymerization degree and improved surface property was prepared by a new precursor of thiosemicarbazide. The sulfur motif and high nitrogen content in thiosemicarbazide promoted the polymerization of thiosemicarbazide to form graphitic car-bon nitride framework with high degree of polymerization, which significantly influenced the electronic structure and surface chemical properties. TSC-550 possessed a narrow bandgap of 2.19 eV that facili-tated the utilization of visible light, and possessed a less positive charge, acidic surface that resulted in enhanced hydrogen adsorption ability in water solution, which promoted the H-2 evolution kinetics. In addition, the extended pi-conjugated electronic system promoted the separation and migration of photo-generated charge carries in plane of TSC-550 framework, as well as the increasing interlayer C-N in-teractions in TSC-550 created conductive paths across the layers to tunnel interlayers for rapid electron transportation. As a result, TSC-550 nanosheets showed excellent photocatalytic H-2 production activity, the AQY achieved 36.4% at 425 nm. Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a well-known two-dimensional conjugated polymer semiconductor that has been broadly applied in photocatalysis-related fields. However, further developments of g-C3N4, especially in device applications, have been constrained by the inherent limitations of its insoluble nature and particulate properties. Recent breakthroughs in fabrication methods of g-C3N4 films have led to innovative and inspiring applications in many fields. In this review, we first summarize the fabrication of continuous and thin films, either supported on substrates or as free-standing membranes. Then, the novel properties and application of g-C3N4 films are the focus of the current review. Finally, some underlying challenges and the future developments of g-C3N4 films are tentatively discussed. This review is expected to provide a comprehensive and timely summary of g-C3N4 film research to the wide audience in the field of conjugated polymer semiconductor-based materials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Sol−Gel Processing of Water‐Soluble Carbon Nitride Enables High‐Performance Photoanodes**

Abstract:In spite of the enormous promise that polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials hold for various applications, the fabrication of high‐quality, binder‐free PCN films and electrodes has been a largely elusive goal to date. Here we tackle this challenge by devising, for the first time, a water‐based sol–gel approach that enables facile preparation of thin films based on poly(heptazine imide) (PHI), a polymer belonging to the PCN family. The sol–gel process capitalizes on the use of a water‐soluble PHI precursor that allows formation of a non‐covalent hydrogel. The hydrogel can be deposited on conductive substrates resulting in formation of mechanically stable polymeric thin layers. The resulting photoanodes exhibit unprecedented photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance in alcohol reforming and highly selective (~100%) conversions with very high photocurrents (>0.25 mA cm –2 under 2 sun) down to <0 V vs. RHE. This enables even effective PEC operation under zero‐bias conditions, and represents the very first example of a 'soft matter'‐based PEC system capable of bias‐free photoreforming. The robust binder‐free films derived from sol–gel processing of water‐soluble PCN thus constitute a new paradigm for high‐performance 'soft matter' photoelectrocatalytic systems, and pave the way for further applications in which high‐quality PCN films are required.

Porous Carbon Nitride Thin Strip: Precise Carbon Doping Regulating Delocalized Pi-Electron Induces Elevated Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:The photocatalytic efficiency of polymeric carbon nitride is hampered by high carrier recombination rate and low charge transfer. Herein, these issues are addressed by constructing 1D strip-like carbon nitride with a large pi-electron conjugated system from carbon-doping, realizing the synchronization control of its electronic structure and morphology. Nicotinic acid, a monomer with the carboxyl group and pyridine ring, and melamine are selected for assembling the strip-like supramolecular via hydrogen bond under hydrothermal process. Both peripheral pyridine unit and hydrogen bond have significant effect on self-assembly process of nicotinic acid and melamine along one dimension to form a strip-like precursor. Subsequently, 1D thin porous strip-like carbon nitride is obtained by calcination treatment of precursor. The as-prepared 1D strip-like carbon nitride with effective pi delocalization from carbon-doping and porous structure can accelerate charges and mass transfer and provide extra active sites. Both theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that carbon doping (pyridine heterocycle) narrows the bandgap via manipulating the band position and increases the pi electron density. Thus, the 1D porous thin strip-like carbon nitride realizes compelling hydrogen evolution rate (126.2 mu mol h(-1)), far beyond (approximate to 18 fold) the value of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) (7.2 mu mol h(-1)) under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water splitting converts solar energy into clean hydrogen fuel. In this system, the preparation of high-quality photoanode is essential for achieving efficient solar hydrolysis. Polymeric carbon nitride has emerged as a promising photocatalyst for solar water splitting due to its visible light absorption, suitable band edge positions and good chemical stability. However, considerable difficulties have been encountered for the preparation of robust and well-bonded carbon nitride films on conductive substrates. Herein, a combined strategy of electrophoresis and vapor deposition results in robust and high performing carbon nitride film photoelectrodes with good bonding on substrates, suitable thickness for light absorption, and enhanced charge separation and transfer abilities. The unique structure of the photoanode thus facilitates the oxidation of water and leads to an optimal photocurrent density of approximately 120 μA cm -2 at 1.23 V RHE . This work provides new insights for the preparation of polymeric carbon nitride film photoelectrodes, promoting the developments of photoelectric and photoelectrochemical applications based on carbon nitride.

Abstract:The light penetration effect will weaken the driving force of charge separation from phase to surface by the built-in electric field of nanoscale photocatalysts, like low-dimensional materials. Therefore, in this study, a novel nanoscale lamination catalyst design method was proposed using a polymeric carbon nitride (PCN)-nano polyhedral SrTiO3 core-shell structure catalyst (PCN-SrTiO3). The results showed that the nanoscale lamination effect could be generated by the formation of the N–Sr bond, which could regulate the built-in electric field of the PCN simultaneously. Moreover, detailed characterization indicated that the N–Sr bond, which facilitates the generation of N vacancies in PCN, could act as a novel channel for charge transfer. Both surface and interior core N-deficient PCN have been discovered, resulting in more positive and negative VB positions, respectively. Synchronously, the light absorption ability of the PCN-SrTiO3 samples increased. Consequently, the enhanced photocatalytic overall water splitting could be ascribed to the synergism of the built-in electric field regulation caused by the N-Sr formation-induced nanoscale lamination effect, which was favorable for energy flow adaption on the spatiotemporal scale.
Porous Carbon Nitride Thin Strip: Precise Carbon Doping Regulating Delocalized π‐Electron Induces Elevated Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:The photocatalytic efficiency of polymeric carbon nitride is hampered by high carrier recombination rate and low charge transfer. Herein, these issues are addressed by constructing 1D strip‐like carbon nitride with a large π‐electron conjugated system from carbon‐doping, realizing the synchronization control of its electronic structure and morphology. Nicotinic acid, a monomer with the carboxyl group and pyridine ring, and melamine are selected for assembling the strip‐like supramolecular via hydrogen bond under hydrothermal process. Both peripheral pyridine unit and hydrogen bond have significant effect on self‐assembly process of nicotinic acid and melamine along one dimension to form a strip‐like precursor. Subsequently, 1D thin porous strip‐like carbon nitride is obtained by calcination treatment of precursor. The as‐prepared 1D strip‐like carbon nitride with effective π delocalization from carbon‐doping and porous structure can accelerate charges and mass transfer and provide extra active sites. Both theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that carbon doping (pyridine heterocycle) narrows the bandgap via manipulating the band position and increases the π electron density. Thus, the 1D porous thin strip‐like carbon nitride realizes compelling hydrogen evolution rate (126.2 µmol h−1), far beyond (≈18 fold) the value of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) (7.2 µmol h−1) under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Abstract Poly(triazine imides) intercalated with Li + and X − (PTI/X, X=Cl or Br), which are described widely as crystalline polymeric carbon nitrides, were synthesized in a facile manner by heating a mixture of melamine and LiX. This method has the advantages of low cost, scalable production, and high efficiency. Importantly, both PTI/Cl and PTI/Br exhibit an enhanced photocatalytic performance compared to conventional graphitic polymeric carbon nitride in the degradation of rhodamine B under visible‐light irradiation because of their higher visible‐light‐harvesting ability and charge carrier separation efficiency.
