Abstract:Single nanoparticle detection is of critical importance in many applications. Optical microcavities featuring high-Q factors and small mode volumes have been widely investigated in sensing applications. In general, the microcavity sensing depends mainly on reactive (i.e., dispersive) interactions, resulting in a resonance wavelength shift or mode splitting, which essentially responds to the real part of the polarizability of the targets. In the first part of this talk, we report the experimental demonstration of single nanoparticle detection using either resonance mode broadening or microcavity Raman laser splitting. In the second part, a dissipative sensing method is demonstrated to detect single lossy nanoparticles. This dissipative sensing method holds great potential in detecting nanoparticles of high absorption or ultralow polarizabilities, such as carbon nanotubes and metal nanoparticles, and in characterizing nanoparticle properties in combination with the reactive sensing method.

Abstract:Ultrasensitive optical detection of nanoparticles is highly desirable for applications in early-stage diagnosis of human diseases, environmental monitoring and homeland security, but remains extremely difficult due to ultralow polarizabilities of small-sized, low-index particles. Optical whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities, with high Q factors up to 108, provide a promising platforms for label-free detection of nano-scaled objects, due to significantly enhanced light-matter interaction. The mechanisms of the conventional WGM sensors, based on the reactive (or dispersive) interaction, measure the mode shift induced by the environmental variations of refractive index, which may fail to detect low-index nanoparticles. In this work, we propose a different dissipative sensing scheme, reacting as linewidth change of WGMs, to detect single nanoparticle using a silica toroidal microcavity fabricated on a silicon substrate. In experiment, detection of single gold nanorods in aqueous environment is realized by monitoring simultaneously the linewidth change and shift of cavity mode. Besides a good consistent with the theoretical predictions, the experimental result shows that the dissipative sensing achieves a better signal-to-noise-ratio compared to the dispersive mechanism. Remarkably, by setting the probe wavelength on and off the surface plasmon resonance of the gold nanoparticles, the great potential of the dissipative sensing method to detect single lossy nanoparticles is demonstrated. This dissipative sensing method holds great potential in detecting lossy nanoparticles, and may become a promising lab-on-a-chip platform for detecting small-sized, low-index particles with ultralow polarizabilities.

Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

In the experiment, detection of single gold nanorods in an aqueous environment is realized by monitoring simultaneously the linewidth change and shift of the cavity mode. The experimental result falls within the theoretical prediction. Remarkably, the reactive and dissipative sensing methods are evaluated by setting the probe wavelength on and off the surface plasmon resonance to tune the absorption of nanorods, which demonstrates clearly the great potential of the dissipative sensing method to detect lossy nanoparticles. Future applications could also combine the dissipative and reactive sensing methods, which may provide better characterizations of nanoparticles.

Abstract:Detection of nanoscale objects is highly desirable in various fields such as early-stage disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring and homeland security. Optical microcavity sensors are renowned for ultrahigh sensitivities due to strongly enhanced light-matter interaction. This review focuses on single nanoparticle detection using optical whispering gallery microcavities and photonic crystal microcavities, both of which have been developing rapidly over the past few years. The reactive and dissipative sensing methods, characterized by light-analyte interactions, are explained explicitly. The sensitivity and the detection limit are essentially determined by the cavity properties, and are limited by the various noise sources in the measurements. On the one hand, recent advances include significant sensitivity enhancement using techniques to construct novel microcavity structures with reduced mode volumes, to localize the mode field, or to introduce optical gain. On the other hand, researchers attempt to lower the detection limit by improving the spectral resolution, which can be implemented by suppressing the experimental noises. We also review the methods of achieving a better temporal resolution by employing mode locking techniques or cavity ring up spectroscopy. In conclusion, outlooks on the possible ways to implement microcavity-based sensing devices and potential applications are provided.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate experimentally the strong dissipative acousto-optic interaction between a suspended vibrating microfiber and a whispering-gallery microcavity. On the one hand, the dissipative response driven by an external stimulus of acoustic waves is found to be stronger than the dispersive response by 2 orders of magnitude. On the other hand, dead points emerge with the zero dissipative response at certain parameters, promising the potentials in physical sensing such as precise measurements of magnetic field and temperature. The strong dissipative acousto-optic interaction is then explored for ultrasensitive detection of broadband acoustic waves. A noise equivalent pressure as low as 0.81 Pa at 140 kHz in air is demonstrated experimentally, insensitive to cavity Q factors and does not rely on mechanical resonances.

Abstract:Optical microcavity has proven its potential for unlabeled sensing. Here, we propose and demonstrate in a lithium niobate on insulator microcavity an enhanced sensing approach enabled by the nonlinear mode oscillation generated by the competition between thermal-optic and photorefractive effect, which breaks the intrinsic limitation in wavelength resolution set by the cavity's optical quality factor. It allows us to perform precise measurements of the mode shifting introduced by a nanoscale scatterer with a signal to noise ratio of 13.1 dB and paves a distinctive way to improve resonance shift resolution in widely studied microcavity sensors with a platform of great integration capability.

Abstract:We construct a strong dissipative acousto-optic interaction in a whispering-gallery-mode microcavity and a suspended microfiber. The dissipative response presents an improvement by two orders of magnitude compared with the dispersive acoustic response. Moreover, dead points with zero responses appear under certain parameters. This strong dissipative interaction is applied in ultrasensitive ultrasound detection, which is proved to be insensitive to quality factors.

Abstract:We reveal the cooperative effect of coherent and dissipative magnon-photon couplings in an open cavity magnonic system, which leads to nonreciprocity with a considerably large isolation ratio and flexible controllability. Furthermore, we discover unidirectional invisibility for microwave propagation, which appears at the zero-damping condition for hybrid magnon-photon modes. A simple model is developed to capture the generic physics of the interference between coherent and dissipative couplings, which accurately reproduces the observations over a broad range of parameters. This general scheme could inspire methods to achieve nonreciprocity in other systems.

Abstract:Optical microcavities are compact structures that confine resonant photons in microscale dimensions for long periods of time, greatly enhancing light–matter interactions. Plentiful and profound physical mechanisms within these microcavities or functional microcavities have been extensively explored, including mode shift/splitting/broadening, lasing and gain enhancements, surface plasmon resonance, fluorescence resonance energy transferring, optical frequency comb spectroscopy, optomechanical interaction, and exceptional point. The versatility in design and the diverse range of materials, particularly composites involving metals and 2-dimensional materials, have paved a way for innovative approaches and improved performance in biochemical sensing applications. Leveraging the advantages ranging from miniaturization, high sensitivity, rapid response, and inherent stability, optical microcavity-based biochemical sensors have emerged to address the growing and increasingly complex demands of biochemical detection. This review commences with an exploration of fundamental mechanisms and structures and then delves into typical applications in recent advancements, covering the detection of biomacromolecules, cells, solid particles, liquid ions, and gas molecules. This review also culminates with a forward-looking perspective, highlighting future development trends and crucial research directions.

Abstract:A dissipative sensing scheme based on a self-interference microring resonator (SIMRR), which is robust against lasing and microcavity frequency noise in the detecting system with a low noise level, is systematically investigated. The dependence of the performance of an SIMRR sensor in dispersive and dissipative sensing schemes on the physical structural parameters, e.g., the waveguide loss coefficient, the power coupling coefficient, the microring radius, and the initial sensing arm waveguide length in the SIMRR sensor, is studied. Based on the Cramer–Rao lower bound for parameter estimation, the detection limits of dispersive and dissipative sensing are theoretically and numerically analyzed, which demonstrate that the dissipative approach is immune from the frequency noises with a low noise level. The results show that the detection limit of dissipative sensing has great potential to achieve better performance than that of dispersive sensing for a practical commercial tunable laser scanning system.

Abstract:The dissipative sensing based on a self-interference microring resonator composed of a microring resonator and a U-shaped feedback waveguide is demonstrated experimentally. Instead of a frequency shift induced by the phase shift of the waveguide or the microcavity, the dissipative sensing converts the phase shift to the effective external coupling rate, which leads to the change of linewidth of the optical resonance and the extinction ratio in the transmission spectrum. In our experiment, the power dissipated from a microheater on the feedback waveguide is detected by the dissipative sensing mechanism, and the sensitivity of our device can achieve 0.22 dB/mW. This dissipative sensing mechanism provides another promising candidate for microcavity sensing applications.

Abstract:Optical microcavities have the ability to confine photons in small mode volumes for long periods of time, greatly enhancing light-matter interactions, and have become one of the research hotspots in international academia. In recent years, sensing applications in complex environments have inspired the development of multimode optical microcavity sensors. These multimode sensors can be used not only for multi-parameter detection but also to improve measurement precision. In this review, we introduce multimode sensing methods based on optical microcavities and present an overview of the multimode single/multi-parameter optical microcavities sensors. Expected further research activities are also put forward.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the application of coupled optical microcavities as refractive index sensors. Coupled microcavities support a very sharp asymmetrical Fano resonance, which gives rise to faster changes in output transmission than the changes from a single cavity. With the output transmission at a fixed wavelength that varies much faster than it does in a single-cavity resonance, the result is enhanced sensitivity of the device to the changes in refractive index. In addition, it is observed that both thermal and optical Kerr effects can be utilized to improve the sensitivity.
