Abstract:Nano-TiO2 immobilized antioxidant (TiO2-KH550-AG) was prepared to improve the ageing resistance of thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) exposed to UV/O-3. TiO2 nanoparticles were firstly modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) and then reacted with the antioxidant, 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (AG), through the acyl chloride reaction followed by the amidation. FTIR, XPS and TGA measurements confirmed that the antioxidant (AG) was chemically immobilized onto the nano TiO2 surfaces. TPV/TiO2-KH550-AG nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing. SEM observation showed that TiO2-KH550-AG was homogeneously dispersed into the matrix of TPV. The UV/O-3 ageing test of the samples was carried out in the environment with constant UV intensity of 1.40 mW/ cm(2) and ozone concentration of 100 +/- 4 mg/m(3). The ageing resistance behavior of the TPV/TiO2-KH550AG nanocomposites was evaluated by the changes of surface morphology, mechanical properties and carbonyl index during the UV/O-3 ageing test. It was observed that the TPV/TiO2-KH550-AG exhibited high stability during the process of UV/O-3 ageing. The results revealed that the anti-ageing efficiency of TiO2-KH550-AG was superior to the mixture of the corresponding AG and modified TiO2, owing to the better dispersion and migration resistance of TiO2-KH550-AG. Abstract:Mixed antioxidants composed of antioxidant IPPD and novel rare earth lanthanum complex were used as an additive to prepare natural rubber (NR) samples. The variations of macro-properties, surface characterizations, and internal groups were investigated by mechanical testing, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA/FT-IR), respectively, to study the thermal-oxidative stability of NR. The thermal-oxidative degradation kinetic parameters were determined by analyzing the thermogravimetric curves at different heating rates with two model-free methods, Kissinger method and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method. The results all showed that, compared with pure antioxidant IPPD, the same mass of mixed antioxidants could indeed improve the thermal-oxidative stability of NR. Furthermore, based on the TGA/FT-IR results and quantum mechanics simulations, the autocatalytic, free radical chain reaction mechanism for the thermal-oxidative aging of NR was clarified, and the different function mechanisms of antioxidants IPPD and p-ASALa were also discussed. Except for functioning as a labile-hydrogen donor which is similar to antioxidant IPPD in protecting NR against autoxidation, p-ASALa has strong coordination abilities and large coordination numbers, resulting in the high efficiency in enhancing the thermal-oxidative stability of NR.
Nanodot-Loaded Clay Nanotubes As Green and Sustained Radical Scavengers for Elastomer

Abstract:Radical-scavenging carbon nanodots (CDs) were loaded into the 50 nm diameter natural halloysite clay tubes to fabricate low toxic CD-delivery vehicles for elastomer composites with sustained antiaging functionality. Then, 2 nm diameter carbon nanodots released from the halloysite lumens interacted with reactive radicals, generated at the initial stage of oxidative processes, which significantly improved thermo-aging resistance of the elastomers. The antioxidative efficiency of these CD-delivery vehicles was further increased through the nanotubes' surface modification with a thin grafted-silane shell, which allowed the slowing of the release rate, thus extending the protection. This nanoarchitectural design of the carbon dot loaded clay nanotubes doped at 9 wt % into a rubber matrix allowed for sustained radical-scavenging and provides a new strategy for long-lasting elastomer protection. Our antiaging rubber nanoformulation based on a natural tubule clay and biocompatible CDs can decrease the environmental hazards of conventional petrol-derived antioxidants. Such clay core-shell systems may also be useful for biocompatible encapsulation of often-poisonous nanodots providing safe biomarkers.
Improving thermal‐oxidative stability of nitrile butadiene rubber composites by surface modification of zirconium phosphate

Abstract:Zirconium phosphate (α‐ZrP) was modified by o‐phenylenediamine (OPD) grafting to its surface, named ZPD, and used to improve thermal‐oxidative stability of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) by direct blending method. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X‐ray diffraction, and contact angle test, demonstrated that OPD was grafted to the surface of α‐ZrP successfully. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that OPD could effectively improve the interaction between α‐ZrP and NBR and a better the dispersion of α‐ZrP in the rubber matrix. The fracture strength of the NBR composites was increased by 3.3 Mpa with the addition of 3 phr ZPD fillers, respectively, compared with unmodified NBR/α‐ZrP composites. In addition, TGA, DMA, and FWO analysis showed ZPD fillers, combined lamellar barrier of α‐ZrP with radical trapping ability of OPD, could retard oxidative cross‐linking and fracture reaction of rubber chains, and improve the thermal‐oxidative aging resistance of the NBR composites. This work provides a practical and effective methodology for surface modification of α‐ZrP and preparation of high‐performance NBR composites.

Abstract:Taking advantages of latex compounding method, clay was nano-dispersed into rubber matrix and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (named KH550) was simultaneously intercalated into clay galleries during co-coagulating procedure. Then bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide (named Si69) was incorporated into above KH550-modified nanocompounds by mechanical blending. The structure and properties of the nanocomposites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) and mechanical testing. The results showed that a chemical bridge between organically modified clay and rubber matrix through Si69 was built during vulcanization, and the interfacial strength of the cured nanocomposites was remarkably improved. Thus a high performance styrene–butadiene rubber/clay nanocomposite was gained by such a two-step method, which illustrated eight times higher modulus at 300% strain and seven times higher tensile strength compared with cured pure rubber.
Improving Thermo-Oxidative Stability of Nitrile Rubber Composites by Functional Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), modified with anti-aging agent p-phenylenediamine (PPD), was added into nitrile rubber (NBR) in order to improve the thermo-oxidative stability of NBR. The modification of GO and the transformation of functional groups were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mechanical performances of NBR composites before and after the thermo-oxidative aging were recorded. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) show an increased storage modulus (G') and a decreased value of area of tan δ peak after introducing modified GO into NBR. It indicates that filler particles show positive interaction with molecular chains. The thermo-oxidative stability of composites was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Then, the thermo-oxidative aging kinetic parameters were obtained by the Flynn⁻Wall⁻Ozawa (FWO) equation. The results of aging tests show that the thermo-oxidative stability of rubber matrix increases obviously after introducing GO⁻PPD. In addition, mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) of both before and after aged NBR/GO⁻PPD composites were superior to that of NBR. This work provides meaningful guidance for achieving multifunction thermo-oxidative aging resistance rubber composites.

Abstract:Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) loaded poly(1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl-quinoline) (RD), HNTs-RD, was successfully prepared and added as filler and antioxidant to form natural rubber (NR) composites. The thermo-oxidative aging behaviour of NR composites and the migration of the loaded RD were investigated by mechanical testing, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and energy dispersive spectroscopy. For the composites with only HNTs-RD as antioxidant, due to the changed conformation and mobility of the immobilized rubber chains approaching HNTs-RD surface, it took a long time for the released RD from the HNTs lumen to migrate into the free rubber phase, during which the free rubber chains were highly oxidized, leading to the poor thermo-oxidative stability of the rubber composites. For the NR composites with HNTs-RD and free RD, it was found that the free rubber chains were protected against oxygen and heat by the free RD. Besides, the released RD steadily migrated and dispersed into the free rubber phase, ensuring the relatively stable and high concentration of total antioxidant in the free rubber phase for a long time, leading to the much better thermo-oxidative stability compared to the rubber composites with only HNTs-RD. In general, this work is believed to provide better guidance for the preparation of rubber composites with long-term aging resistance.

Abstract:Improvement of thermo-oxidative resistance of rubber composite has not been solved well so far, it has always been a focus of research and attracts the great interest of scientists. In this work, a novel reactive halloysite nanotubes (RHNTs) loading zinc methacrylate (ZDMA) as chemical antioxidant were prepared via in situ preparation of zinc methacrylate (ZDMA) in the lumen of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The presence of ZDMA in the lumen of halloysite nanotubes was characterized and confirmed by FTIR, TEM, and TGA. The effect of RHNTs on the mechanical properties and thermo-oxidative resistance for HNBR/FKM-blended rubber composites was investigated, respectively. Especially, the RHNTs modified by silane coupling agent exhibited the best dispersibility in HNBR/FKM polymer matrix, and the tensile strength of HNBR/FKM/m 1 -RHNTs composites was much higher than that of blank sample. During thermo-oxidative aging at 150 °C, all the HNBR/FKM/RHNTs composites did not exhibit extreme value phenomenon of tensile strength due to aging reinforcement within the first 72-h period. The data of DSC curves showed that the HNBR/FKM/m 1 -RHNTs exhibited the minimum Δ Tg among all the samples. Based on the above results, obviously, it was verified that RHNTs showed better reinforcement and thermal oxygen aging resistance effect.

Abstract:In this study, in-situ aluminum oxide-poly(dopamine)-silver (Al2O3-PDA-Ag) hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized using simple and eco-friendly approach. Al2O3 nanoparticles were first modified by PDA through mussel-inspired method, and Ag nanoparticles were then anchored on Al2O3-PDA nanoparticles surfaces through reduction of Ag+ by glucose. The as-obtained Al2O3-PDA-Ag nanoparticles were subsequently incorporated into natural rubber (NR) matrix to yield elastomer composites. The synergistic effect of Ag and Al2O3 nanoparticles resulted in high thermal conductivity of 10 vol% Al2O3-PDA-Ag/NR composite reaching up to 0.20 W/mK. This value was two-fold superior to that of pure NR (0.10 W/mK). In addition, Al2O3-PDA-Ag/NR composites showed excellent electromechanical and mechanical properties. Overall, the proposed method looks promising for future preparation of high-thermal-conductive dielectric materials.

Abstract:In order to minimize the oxidative degradation of SBR at high temperature, the nano-dispersed clay layers were introduced by using the SBR/clay (100/80) nanocompound to prepare SBR/clay/carbon black (CB) nanocomposites, then the effects of nano-clay on the properties of SBR nanocomposites are investigated. The clay layers and CB are uniformly dispersed in the SBR matrix at nano-scale. The mechanical properties of the SBR/clay/CB nanocomposites mostly decrease with the increase of clay loading, however, with the increase of clay loading, the change rate of the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites decreases and the aging coefficient of the nanocomposites rises, and the length and depth of the cracks of the aged nanocomposites after bending decrease, which means that the clay layers can provide the nanocomposites excellent thermal aging resistance and heat resistance. The experiment of aging with air and without air proved the importance of oxygen during rubber aging process. The FTIR spectra show the generation of oxygen-containing group on the external surface of the nanocomposites during aging. The DSC results indicate the differences between the internal layer and the external layer of the aged nanocomposites.
Enhancement of Dielectric Performance of Polymer Composites Via Constructing BaTiO3-Poly(dopamine)-Ag Nanoparticles Through Mussel-Inspired Surface Functionalization

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of a novel core-satellite-structured BaTiO3-poly(dopamine)-silver (BT-PDA-Ag) nanoparticle for improving dielectric properties of nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) nanocomposites. The BT-PDA-Ag nanoparticles are synthesized by dopamine oxidative polymerization and electroless plating of silver. The Ag nanoparticles decorated on the BT nanoparticles enhanced the dielectric constant of NBR nanocomposites due to the increased conductivity of the filler/matrix interlayer and nanocapacitor structure. In addition, the incorporation of the BT nanoparticles prevented the continuous connection of Ag nanoparticles and suppressed the formation of a conductive path in the NBR matrix. Moreover, the ultrasmall Ag nanoparticles trapped the carriers by Coulomb blockade and quantum confinement effects, which results in low dielectric loss and electrical conductivity of nanocomposites. The proposed method with simplicity and scalability can be adapted to process high-dielectric polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:An efficient and environmentally friendly strategy was demonstrated for enhancing the interfacial interaction between nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites. Herein, we coated the MMT surface with a thin coating of polydopamine (PDA), and then compounded PDA-coated MMT (DMMT) gel with the solid NBR via gel compounding method to obtain NBR/DMMT nanocomposites. It was revealed that the hydrogen bond interactions between DMMT and NBR are responsible for the nanodispersion of DMMT as well as for effective stress transfer. This led to a great improvement in the mechanical properties of the NBR/DMMT nanocomposite at low DMMT loading. Using only 6 phr DMMT, the tensile strength of NBR/DMMT nanocomposite was able to achieve 15.9 MPa, which is 4.1 times that of pure NBR.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, the research of blending anti‐aging modification of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) has been widely reported, but the surface effect in the rubber aging process has been obviously ignored. Starting from the surface microstructure design, the construction of surface protection barrier may be a new anti‐aging way. In this paper, the surface superhydrophobic NBR surf ‐polydopamine (PDA)‐(SiO 2 ‐g‐PFOMA) is prepared through a ordered modification of two‐step physical deposition to NBR with PDA and SiO 2 grafted with Perfluorooctylmethacrylate (SiO 2 ‐g‐PFOMA). By comparing the mechanical properties before and after aging, it is found that the DA surface pretreatment significantly improves the NBR thermo‐oxidative aging. On this basis, surface superhydrophobic SiO 2 ‐g‐PFOMA microstructure has set up to further prevents NBR from the attack of corrosive media such as acid, alkali, salt and water. After aging in HCl solution at 90°C for 96 h, the fracture strength, elongation and aging coefficient of NBR surf ‐PDA‐(SiO 2 ‐g‐PFOMA) compared with unmodified NBR(KB) were increased by 2.28 MPa, 48.76% and 0.18, respectively. This work can offer an surface anti‐aging technology to NBR.

Abstract:Rubber blends and their nanocomposites based on clay layers were developed. Two different mass ratio of styrene butadiene–nitrile butadiene rubber blend (SBR–NBR) were prepared. Montmorillonite clay modified with methyl dihydroxyethyl hydrogenated tallow ammonium and trimethyl stearyl ammoniums individually were dispersed in SBR–NBR rubber producing different nanocomposites. The mass ratio of organoclay was varied and optimized; also, the dispersion of organoclay sheets was investigated. The mechanical and thermal properties of the developed rubber nanocomposites were studied and improved. The tensile strength of the new nanocomposites was improved recording 16% improvement compared to blank rubber blend. Thermal stability of the developed rubber nanocomposites was enhanced achieving higher 40 °C in decomposition temperature compared to blank rubber blend. Furthermore, the flammability properties of the developed rubber nanocomposites were evaluated and rate of burning achieved 45% reduction compared to blank rubber blend. The chemical structure of organic modifier played an important role in the final nanocomposites performance. The intercalation of dispersed organoclay sheets with rubber blend was elucidated using X-ray diffraction and dispersion was confirmed using SEM.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Recently, dopamine and its secondary function are being used as the intermediate to tailor the surface molecular structure of high-dielectric-constant nanoparticles, which improves interfacial interaction of dielectric elastomer (DE) composites, due to their versatile adhesion properties. However, the high-cost of dopamine limits the large-scale applications of DE. Herein, a mussel-inspired modification of TiO2 nanoparticles is presented to prepare high-performance natural rubber (NR) DE composites by replacing dopamine with cheaper poly(catechol/polyamine) (PCPA). First, the TiO2 nanoparticles were deposited with PCPA. Then, the PCPA-coated TiO2 nanoparticles were further grafted with γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (KH570), which contains double bonds and denoted as TiO2-PCPA-KH570. Owing to the presence of CC bonds, the TiO2-PCPA-KH570 nanoparticles participated in the vulcanization of NR and the TiO2-PCPA-KH570/NR composites exhibited enhanced filler dispersion and interfacial interaction, leading to the improved mechanical, dielectric, and electromechanical properties. Furthermore, the 10 phr TiO2-PCPA-KH570/NR composite resulted in the largest actuated strain of 12.3%, which is ~2 times higher than that of the largest actuated strain of pure NR (6.0%). The present study provides a high-efficient and cost-effective route to obtain DEAs with enhanced electromechanical properties.

QPVA/SiO2 nanoclusters reinforced NR nanocomposite was prepared by latex compounding via electrostatic interaction. TEM micrographs demonstrated QPVA/SiO2 nanoclusters were distributed around NR particles, forming shell-core structure. The mechanical properties and thermal ageing resistance of NR-QPVA/SiO2 were significantly improved compared with that of neat NR. The tensile strength of NR-QPVA/SiO2 film was improved by 60%, when the SiO2 content is 3%. SEM pictures indicated SiO2 was homogenous dispersed throughout NR matrix in the presence of QPVA. It also demonstrated that SiO2 could enhance thermal stability of NR, as NR-QPVA/SiO2 had best surface morphology after 72 hours thermal ageing at 100 °C. The thermal decomposition temperature and glass transition temperature of NR-QPVA/SiO2 film increased to a higher temperature due to strong polymer–filler interaction, which also indicated that all the ingredients were compatible and homogenous.
A Novel Interface Agent for Preparation of High Gas Barrier Organic Montmorillonite/Brominated Butyl Rubber Nanocomposites

Abstract:Organic montmorillonite/brominated butyl rubber nanocomposites are prepared by improved solution blending, i.e., preparation of organic clay suspension and suspension blending with brominated butyl rubber solution by adding polytetramethylene ether glycol as interface agent. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy show that polytetramethylene ether glycol has good dispersing effect on organic clay. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates that both intercalated and exfoliated structures are obtained in organic montmorillonite/brominated butyl rubber nanocomposites. The mechanical performances and the gas barrier properties of the organic montmorillonite/brominated butyl rubber nanocomposites are improved greatly, which proves that the high-performance clay/rubber nanocomposites are prepared in nonpolar solvent.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA), recognized for its exceptional adhesion and high-temperature resistance, serves as an effective sizing agent in demanding composite material production. This study explores the application of PDA as an interface adhesive for carbon fiber-reinforced high-temperature phthalonitrile (PN) composites (CFRPN), assessing the effects of two PDA synthesis methods—electrochemical and solution oxidation—on interfacial modification. The electrochemical method uniformly fills grooves on CF surfaces, creating an optimal interface layer, yet it encounters challenges in bulk, multi-layer fiber processing. Conversely, the solution oxidation method, despite less uniform PDA distribution, exhibits greater consistency in batch processing and significantly enhances the interlaminar shear strength of CFRPN, outperforming the electrochemical method in mechanical enhancements. Given its simplicity and reduced equipment requirements, the solution oxidation method offers considerable potential for broader engineering applications.
