Abstract:BiFeO3 nanoparticles (BFO-NPs) have been successfully synthesized through modified microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The obtained BFO-NP was hexagonal phase with R3c structure and covered with a large number of surface hydroxyl groups. Compared with the bulk BiFeO3 microsphere, BFO-NP has much higher purity and similar band gap energy, about 2.10 eV. The photocatalytic performance of BFO-NP was evaluated by Rhodamine B (RhB) removal without any sacrificial agent under visible-light irradiation. A fivefold increase in the rate of RhB degradation and mineralization was obtained, which should result from effective separation of the electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the scavenger-experiments reveal that photo-generated holes and hydroxyl radicals were the primary reactive species. This study opens a new pathway to synthesize BiFeO3 nanoparticle by hydrothermal method and provides a referential route for other perovskite photocatalysts. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Stable catalysts require high catalytic efficiency and repeated consecutive use, low mass loss, and metal leaching. This study investigated BiFeO3 (BFO) composite with high stability and reusability using a one step microwave-assisted hydrothermal method (MAHS) to decompose bisphenol A (BPA) used as the target contaminant. After six consecutive reaction cycles in microwave-enhanced Fenton-like process (MW-Fenton-like), the removal rate of BPA decreased from 94 to 87.4% with low metal leaching ratio and mass loss. The morphology, crystal, reaction kinetics, and hydroxyl radical (·OH) were used to demonstrate the high stability of BFO-MAHS. The results indicated that the benign stability and reusability of BFO-MAHS probably occurred because (1) the thermal-effect of MW improved heating rate, which led to the rapid formation stable cube structure and (2) MW mechanical vibrations existed in the preparation process, which further enhanced the cube structure. Therefore, MAHS could be used as a green and environmental friendly method to apply in catalysts synthesis, which could immensely shorten preparation time and enhance the catalytic performance with no waste production.

Abstract:Polycrystalline BiFeO3 nanoparticles (size 30 similar to 50 nm) were prepared by a simple microwave synthesis technique. The nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM and TG-DTA. The applied experiments show that they are very efficient for photo-catalytic decomposition of organic contaminants under irradiation ultraviolet frequency. The as-obtained BiFeO3 nanoparticles also demonstrate strong ferromagnetism of about 0.045 mu(B)/Fe at room temperature, which is in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of bismuth ferrite multiferroic nanostructures, which were synthesized via microwave-hydrothermal method with a bismuth nitrate/iron nitrate mixture under alkaline conditions. Both BiFeO3 (BFO) nanocrystallites with spherical and rectangle-like morphologies and Bi2Fe4O9 nanowires were synthesized by microwave-hydrothermal process, and their nanoscale structural motifs were revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that BFO nanocrystallites with rectangle-like morphology had an average width of 140 nm and length of 205 nm, and the long side grew along the [100] direction, whereas the BFO nanoparticles with spherical morphology had a particle size in the range of 15-55 nm, and nearly monodispersive behavior was observed in these nanoparticles. The synthesized Bi2Fe4O9 nanowires growing along the [001] direction had a diameter of 40 nm and length up to about 0.5 mu m.

Abstract:Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by the microwave-solvothermal method in a simple reaction system during significantly shorter time than traditional solvothermal or hydrothermal methods. In this synthetic system, ethylene glycol acts as solvent, microwave mediate, and reductant; trisodium citrate works as assistant reductant and electrostatic stabilizer, which makes the Fe3O4 nanoparticles well dispersed in the solution; NH4Ac is the nucleating agent. In the process, a burst of “hot-spots” induced by quick microwave irradiation can create a condition for uniform seeding in the precursor solution, and accelerate the formation of Fe3O4 nanocrystals. F43O4 nanoparticles prepared by the microwave-solvothermal method showed a higher saturation magnetization than the sample synthesized by the conventional solvothermal method, which can be ascribed to the fact that the former has smaller particle sizes than the later.

Abstract:Well-crystallized pure BiFeO3 nanopowders were successfully synthesized at the temperature as low as 120 degrees C by an ethanol-assisted hydrothermal process. In this synthesis, the composition of the solvent played important roles in the formation of pure BiFeO3. The BiFeO3 nanopowders synthesized with 4:3 ethanol/water ratio mainly consists of cubic structures with size from 50 to 150nm. Zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) magnetization measurements indicated that pure BiFeO3 nanopowders showed a spin-glass transition below the freezing temperature. Moreover, the BiFeO3 nanopowders exhibited ferromagnetic order at room temperature.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of {100}c facets exposed single‐crystalline BiFeO3 (BFO) nanoplates, with thickness ranging from 20 to 160 nm and lateral size of submicrometers, via a simple and very rapid (1–2 min) microwave‐assisted hydrothermal approach. We show that the microwave treatment gives comparable improvement in crystallinity of BFO nanocrystals with respect to traditional hydrothermal processes while requiring significantly less time and energy. In addition, we show that microwave radiation power, reaction time, and alkali concentration play important roles in the crystallinity and morphology of the products. We discuss a possible formation mechanism of the nanoplates based on our experimental results. Additionally, the BFO nanoplates exhibit weak ferromagnetic properties at room temperature, which we attribute to the size‐confinement effect on magnetic ordering. The present microwave hydrothermal method has great potential in large‐scale fabrication of BFO nanomaterials as well as other composite functional materials due to significantly reduced time and energy.

Abstract:BiFeO3 (BFO) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method assisted by a mineralizer at as low a temperature as 200 degrees C. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscope, and physical property measurement system. It was found that KNO3 as a mineralizer played an important role in the formation of BFO nanoparticles, and the as-synthesized BFO nanoparticles showed an enhanced ferromagnetism at room temperature.

Abstract:BiFeO3 particles with various morphologies and sizes were synthesized by a KNO3 assisted hydrothermal method. The Effect of KNO3 concentration was studied on the morphology and size of BiFeO3 crystal. The BiFeO3 samples were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results show that the morphology and size of the micro-/nano BiFeO3 crystals not only strongly influence the optical response but also the visible-light photocatalytic activities. The absorption edge shifts to shorter wavelength and the photocatalytic activity enhances with decrease in the size of BiFeO3 particles. The results reveal that BiFeO3 can also be used as an effective photocatalyst under visible light in addition to its ferroelectric and magnetic applications.

Abstract:In this study, BiFeO3 (BFO) powders decorated on nickel foam (NF) with a high catalytic activity are prepared via a one-step microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The factors that influence the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) with BFO/NFs as catalysts are optimized to improve the catalytic activity in a microwave-enhanced Fenton-like process. BFO/NF exhibit a superior catalytic activity with a high BPA removal ratio (98.4%) and TOC removal ratio (69.5%) within 5 min. Results indicate that NF significantly affect the improvement of the catalytic activity of BFO because it served as a source of hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) during degradation. The amount of center dot OH generated by BFO/NF is approximately 1.65-fold higher than that by pure BFO. After six reaction cycles, the stability and reusability of center dot OH remain high. These findings provide new insights into the synthesis of composites on heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency and easy recyclability for water treatment applications.

Abstract:The hierarchical spherical alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures were obtained by polyacrylamide (PAM)-assisted microwave fabrication method. The nanostructures exhibited mesoporous structures with relatively high remanent magnetization and coercivity at 300 K. The PAM was believed to play an important role in the formation of the hierarchical spherical alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of multiferroic BiFeO 3 perovskite nanoparticles using the microwave combustion technique. Phase evolution is investigated by XRD, which confirms that the formation of a secondary α-Bi 2 O 3 phase with a monoclinic structure along with the existing rhombohedral (BiFeO 3 ) structure. The average crystalline size has been found at 50 nm. The optical band gap was calculated from the Tauc's plot it has been found 2.18 eV. The appearances of FT-IR spectra revealed bands at 550 and 444 cm −1 were correlated to the rhombohedral stretching modes of BiFeO 3 nanostructure. The surface morphology showed the formation of nanosized grains with pores. The magnetization-Field (M-H) hysteresis curves revealed the appearance of ferrimagnetic behavior at room temperature. The BET surface area of BiFeO 3 perovskite nanoparticles was found 44.86 m 2 /g. The as-fabricated BiFeO 3 perovskite nanoparticles were investigated for their superior catalytic activity in two applications, which include (i) Glycerol to formic acid oxidation in the liquid phase with a high efficiency of over 98 percent, (ii) Under visible light, the photocatalytic breakdown of rhodamine B achieved maximal efficiency (almost 99 percent). Finally, we concluded that the BiFeO 3 perovskite nanoparticles exhibit high performance in future multifunctional devices is demonstrated by the simultaneous enhancement of catalytic and photocatalytic activities.

Abstract:Pure-phase Bi2Fe4O9 microstructures have been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method without using any organic surfactants. It was found that the synthesis of micro-cubes and micro-plates of Bi2Fe4O9 can be controlled by adjusting the NaOH concentration from 6 M to 12 M, at 200 °C for 12 h, with an optimized Bi/Fe molar ratio of 2:1. With the increase of NaOH concentration, the morphology of the products developed from micro-cubes with a lateral size of 1.5 μm to micro-plates with a lateral size of 1 μm and a curved outline. Moreover, the as-synthesized Bi2Fe4O9 micro-cubes and micro-plates were evaluated for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. A 90% degradation of MB with a time of 120 min has been achieved by using Bi2Fe4O9 micro-plates, where the first-order k constant was determined to be 0.01883 min−1. In addition, these micro-plates exhibit a typical ferromagnetic property at room temperature, offering an opportunity for efficient utilization and recycling via possible magnetic-assisted separation of organic pollutants for photocatalytic degradation.
Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of Nanosized Α-Fe2o3 for Catalysts and Adsorbents

Abstract:Nanosized alpha-Fe2O3 powder was synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal reaction of Fe(NO3)(3) and urea at 120 degrees C for 30 min. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, BET measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The catalytic performance of alpha-Fe2O3 was studied for the oxidation of CO and 2-propanol to CO2, and the adsorption properties were investigated for the removal of As(III) in water treatment. Uniform alpha-Fe2O3 particles about 5.0 nm in diameter were formed with a surface area of around 173.0 m(2) g(-1). When 0.1 g of alpha-Fe2O3 powder worked as a catalyst, CO was oxidized to CO2 over 120 degrees C and completely transformed to CO2 at 170 degrees C, and 2-propanol was fully oxidized to CO2 at 350 degrees C. The adsorption capacity for As(III) reached 51.8 mg g(-1) at room temperature. This work facilitates the preparation of nanosized alpha-Fe2O3 materials with excellent catalytic and adsorption performance.

Abstract:Nanostructured BiFeO3 particles have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and the effects of particle size on photocatalytic activity and magnetic property of BiFeO3 were investigated. The optical absorption spectra indicate that the band-gap energy increases with decreasing crystalline size due to the quantum-size effect. The enhancement of room-temperature weak ferromagnetism can be observed in nanoscale BiFeO3 particles, which should be attributed to the size-confinement effect on the magnetic ordering. In addition, BiFeO3 nanoparticles with diameter about 5 nm show good photocatalytic performance by photodegradation of Congo red under visible-light (lambda>400 nm) irradiation.

Abstract:Spherical perovskite-type bismuth ferritic nanocrystals with diameters of 10-50 nm and hexagonal-shaped sillenite-type ones with sizes of 18-33 nm were synthesized at low temperatures by microwave hydrothermal process. Their structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties were investigated. The single-crystalline nature of the as-synthesized nanocrystals was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, selected area electron diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations show that Fe element exists as the Fe3+ valence state, as well as Bi element as Bi3+ in the as-prepared bismuth ferritic nanocrystals. The visible-light photocatalytic activities evaluated by the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution show that the sillenite-type bismuth ferritic nanocrystals exhibit higher photocatalytic ability than the perovskite-type ones, which can be ascribed to their small mean particle size and the unique hexagonal-shape morphology, and also the structural characteristics of sillenite-type compound. The present results demonstrate that the hexagonal-shaped sillenite-type bismuth ferritic nanocrystals can be used as novel visible-light-responsive photocatalysts for degradation of organic compounds.

Abstract:alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with different sizes were successfully synthesized by a simple SDS-assisted grinding reaction and subsequent heating treatment process. Effects of calcination temperatures on crystal structure, optical and photocatalytic properties of the products were investigated by TG-DSC, FTIR, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and UV-Vis techniques. Results showed that growth of the alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles was very slow, and the average crystallite size gradually increased with increasing calcination temperatures. Optical measure and calculation showed that there is an increasing trend for the band gap with increase of calcination temperature. The alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles obtained at 500 degrees C revealed higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency for MB than the other samples, attributing to the optimal value between transiting electrons and recombination of electron-hole pairs. Radical scavengers experiments implied that center dot OH and e(-) played important roles in the photocatalytic process. The photodegradation time was greatly shortened, and the photocatalytic efficiency was further enhanced and raised to over 90% after adding H2O2, which is due to generation of a large number of the highly oxidative center dot OH by photo-Fenton reaction. Controlled Fabrication of BiFeO<sub>3</sub>Uniform Microcrystals and Their Magnetic and Photocatalytic Behaviors

Abstract:Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) uniform microcrystals with various morphologies (microspheres and micro/submicrocubes) were successfully synthesized by a controlled hydrothermal method. The resulting microstructures were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning/transmission electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. Possible formation mechanism for BiFeO3 microcrystals was proposed. UV-vis spectra showed that the optical properties of the microsized BiFeO3 crystals were strongly related to their shape and size. We further demonstrated the useful photocatalytic activity of these regular-shaped structures as determined by degradation of Congo red under visible-light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm). Additionally, magnetic responses were observed to be influenced by the morphology of as-synthesized BiFeO3 products, and the ferroelectric performance of BiFeO3 submicrocube was also Studied by piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM). Being a multiferroic semiconductor with suitable narrow band gap (similar to 2.2 eV) and uniform morphologies, these BiFeO3 microcrystals might be useful for the design of devices combining magnetic, electronic, and optical functionalities.
Ultrafast Preparation Of Monodisperse Fe3o4 Nanoparticles By Microwave-Assisted Thermal Decomposition

Abstract:Thermal decomposition, as the main synthetic procedure for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), is facing several problems, such as high reaction temperatures and time consumption. An improved a microwave-assisted thermal decomposition procedure has been developed by which monodisperse Fe3O4 NPs could be rapidly produced at a low aging temperature with high yield (90.1%). The as-synthesized NPs show excellent inductive heating and MRI properties in vitro. In contrast, Fe3O4 NPs synthesized by classical thermal decomposition were obtained in very low yield (20.3%) with an overall poor quality. It was found for the first time that, besides precursors and solvents, magnetic NPs themselves could be heated by microwave irradiation during the synthetic process. These findings were demonstrated by a series of microwave-heating experiments, Raman spectroscopy and vector-network analysis, indicating that the initially formed magnetic Fe3O4 particles were able to transform microwave energy into heat directly and, thus, contribute to the nanoparticle growth.
