Abstract:B-doped ZnO (B-ZnO) microspheres have been fabricated on PET-ITO flexible substrate by hydrothermal method. The B atoms play an important role in the formation of ZnO microspheres. The results of first principles calculations demonstrate that the B atoms prefer to occupy the octahedral interstice positions as the interstitial atoms, which can lead to the decrease of band gap. The B-ZnO/PET-ITO shows significantly enhanced efficiency of photocatalytic activities with good recyclable behavior. The corresponding mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures were fabricated on glass substrate through a convenient deposition process. Firstly, ZnO seed layers were deposited on glass substrates through sol–gel method. Secondly, the ZnO nanostructures were then grown in a Teflon-lined stainless steel autoclave by immersing the seed layers into aqueous solution containing zinc nitrate hexahydrate and ammonia. The microstructures, morphologies, photoluminescence spectra and hydrophobicity of the nanostructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, laser micro-Raman spectrometer and contact angle apparatus, respectively. It can be seen that ZnO nanostructures display different surface morphologies such as ZnO nanorods parallel to the substrate surface, like-pencil ZnO nanorods and bending ZnO nanorods by altering the PH value. The largest intensity ratio of the UV/visible emission and the superhydrophobic surfaces (CA = 156°) with high adhesion can be achieved in the sample grown in the solutions with the PH value of 11.2. The high adhesion may be attributed to the strong capillary force and the ZnO nanostructures with petal effect can be explained by Wenzel model.

Abstract:ITO nanoparticles were generated in the gas phase with a magnetron plasma gas aggregation cluster source. Their morphologies were modified by modulating the discharging power of magnetron sputtering. The shape of the nanoparticles changed from rough spheroid formed with a higher discharging power to multi-branch formed with a lower discharging power. With a discharging power of 25 W, the ITO nanoparticles were enriched with tripod and tetrapod-shaped nanoparticles. The formation mechanism of multi-branch nanoparticles was attributed to the oriented attachment of the initially nucleated smaller nanocrystallites. Transparent conductive ITO nanoparticle films were fabricated by depositing the preformed nanoparticles with controlled thickness. The electron conduction in the film was dominated by electron tunnelling and/or hopping in the percolative channels comprised of closely spaced ITO nanoparticle assemblies and could be tuned from highly resistive nonmetal-like to highly conductive metal-like by changing the deposition thickness. The film also displayed a SPR band in the near-IR region. The conductivity of the multi-branch ITO nanoparticle film was significantly superior to that of the spheroidal nanoparticle film. For a 46 nm thick multi-branch ITO nanoparticle film, a surprisingly low specific resistance of 3.09 x 10(-4) omega cm, which is comparable to the top-class conductivity of bulk ITO films, was obtained after annealing at a mild temperature of 250 degrees C, with a transmittance larger than 85%.

Abstract:Boron-doped zinc oxide sheet-spheres were synthesized on PET–ITO flexible substrates using a hydrothermal method at 90 °C for 5 h. The results of X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the B atoms were successfully doped into the ZnO lattice, the incorporation of B led to an increase in the lattice constant of ZnO and a change in its internal stress. The growth mechanism of pure ZnO nanorods and B-doped ZnO sheet-spheres was specifically investigated. The as-prepared BZO/PET–ITO heterojunction possessed obvious rectification properties and its positive turn-on voltage was 0.4 V. The carrier transport mechanisms involved three models such as hot carrier tunneling theory, tunneling recombination, and series-resistance effect were explored. The BZO/PET–ITO nanostructures were more effective than pure ZnO to degrade the RY 15, and the degradation rate reached 41.45%. The decomposition process with BZO nanostructure followed first-order reaction kinetics. The photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the B-doping could promote the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, which was beneficial to enhance the photocatalytic activity. The photocurrent density of B-doped and pure ZnO/PET–ITO were 0.055 mA/cm2 and 0.016 mA/cm2, respectively. The photocatalytic mechanism of the sample was analyzed by the energy band theory.

Abstract:In this paper,a template free method has been employed to fabricate porous ZnO.Rod shaped precursor is first synthesized by a mild hydrothermal process.Accompanied with the decomposition of the precursor during the subsequent annealing treatment,porous ZnO with the inherited morphology of the precursor is obtained.The as-prepared products are characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis(TG-DTA).It exhibits that the porous hierarchical frame consists of nanopartiles with wurtzite-type.The size of the pores as well as the nanoparticles varies with the heating rate during the annealing process.Photoluminescence(PL) spectra of the porous ZnO shows a red-shift band edge exciton transitions due to the oxygen defects.

Abstract:Co-doped ZnO nanocomposites have been prepared on polyethylene terephthalate-indium tin oxide (PET-ITO) flexible substrates using hydrothermal method. The effects of crystal structure, doping mechanism, as well as photocatalytic properties have been intensive investigated. Compared with pure ZnO, Co-ZnO has distinct photocatalytic activity with the degradation rate of 71.36% for methylene blue (MB) solution. The stable electronic structures and the possible electronic sites for Co elements in combination have been discussed with theoretical calculations. Meanwhile, the mechanism to enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZnO has been discussed.

Abstract:Based on flexible materials, optoelectronic devices with optoelectronic technology as the core and flexible electronic devices as the platform are facing new challenges in their applications, including material requirements based on functional electronic devices such as lightness, thinness, and impact resistance. However, there is still a big gap between the current preparation technology of flexible materials and practical applications. At present, the main factors restricting the more commercial development of flexible materials include preparation conditions and performance. In this work, B-N co-doped ZnO nanorod arrays (NRAs) were successfully synthesized on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate coated with indium tin oxide (ITO) by the hydrothermal method. Based on the density functional theory, the effect of B-N co-doping on the electronic structure of ZnO was calculated; the incorporation of B and N led to an increase in the lattice constant of ZnO. The B-N co-doped ZnO has obvious rectification characteristics with the positive conduction voltage of 2 V in the I–V curve.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene terephathalate)/ZnO(PET/ZnO)nano-meter composites were prepared by means of esterization and condensation reactions of terephathalic acid/ethyl glyol (TPA/EG)in the presence of nano-meter ZnO.The effects of the content and dispersion method of nano-meter ZnO on the viscosity average molecular weight of PET,the dispersion of nano-meter ZnO in the composite and the crystalline properties of PET were investigated.It was found that the introduction of nano-meter ZnO and poly(ethyl glycol)(PEG)dispersing agent to the reaction system had influence on the viscosity average molecular weight of PET.The direct dispersion of nano-meter ZnO in EG resulted in an aggregation of ZnO in PET,lowered the crystalline degree and rate of PET.Nano-meter ZnO particles dispersed well in the composite when PEG was added during the ZnO dispersion process,and the resulted PET had higher crystallization degree and rate.

Abstract:Using NH3 as nitrogen source gas,N-doped ZnO(ZnO:N) thin films in c-axis orientation were deposited on glass substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature.The ZnO:N thin films display significant increase of resistivity and decrease of photoluminescence intensity.As-grown ZnO:N material was used as active channel layer and Si3N4 was used as gate insulator to fabricate thin-film transistor.The fabricated devices on glasses demonstrate typical field effect transistor characteristics.

Abstract:We have demonstrated the crystalline ZnO–Al2O3 core–shell nanowire structure by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a temperature 100°C. The core–shell structure could have potential applications in the fabrication of ZnO field effect transistor. After dissolving the ZnO core, shape defined, rigid and robust crystalline Al2O3 shelled nanostructures have been fabricated. Nanowire ZnO nanostructures have been replicated by alumina shell. This is one of the most effective techniques for producing core–shell or shell/hollowed nanostructures of any desired objects. The Al2O3 shelled nanostructures could have potential applications as space confined nanoreactors, drug delivery, nanofluidic channels and optical transmitting.

Abstract:In this work, Al-doped ZnO (AZO) nanosheets (NSs) were successfully synthesized on graphene-coated polyethylene terephthalate (GPET) flexible substrate via hydrothermal method. Studies have indicated that with the addition of Al3+, the nanostructure of ZnO gradually grows from nanorods (NRs) to NSs, and the (100), (002), and (101) diffraction peak strength of ZnO that grows perpendicularly to the substrate along the c-axis weakened. The mechanism of hydrothermal growth of AZO/GPET was also studied. The electrochemical properties of the samples were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and it was concluded that AZO NSs grown on GPET substrates has better capacitance performance than undoped ZnO NRs.

Abstract:In_2O_3∶SnO_2(ITO) thin films were fabricated on the substrate of flexible polyethylene terephthalate(PET) by DC magnetron sputtering from a ceramic target of In_2O_3/SnO_2(90∶10). Properties of the thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), four-point probe, Hall-effect measurement, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The effects of sputtering pressure, oxygen partial pressure and deposition temperature on properties of microstructure and optoelectronics properties of PET/ITO thin films were investigated in detail. High-quality ITO thin films on PET substrates with the resistivity as low as 8.5×10-4 Ω·cm and the optical transmittance over 80% in the visible spectrum range were obtained.

Abstract:Textured surface boron-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:B) thin films were directly grown via low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD) on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flexible substrates at low temperatures and high-efficiency flexible polymer silicon (Si) based thin film solar cells were obtained. High purity diethylzinc and water vapors were used as source materials, and diborane was used as an n-type dopant gas. P-i-n silicon layers were fabricated at ~398K by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. These textured surface ZnO:B thin films on PET substrates (PET/ZnO:B) exhibit rough pyramid-like morphology with high transparencies (T~80%) and excellent electrical properties (Rs~10Ω at d~1500nm). Finally, the PET/ZnO:B thin films were applied in flexible p-i-n type silicon thin film solar cells (device structure: PET/ZnO:B/p-i-n a-Si:H/Al) with a high conversion efficiency of 6.32% (short-circuit current density JSC=10.62mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage VOC=0.93V and fill factor=64%).

Abstract:Sb-doped ZnO microsphere film was fabricated by a carboxylate ion assisted hydrothermal route coupled with a post-calcination process. The structure, chemical composition and optical band gap of the Sb-doped ZnO microsphere film were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively couple plasma optical emission spectroscopy and UV–visible spectrophotometry, and compared with the un-doped ZnO microsphere film. The results suggest that the formation of zinc–antimony tartrate complex species during hydrothermal growth is the key to realize Sb-doped ZnO microstructures, and the present hydrothermal method with post-calcination is an effective way to dope Sb into ZnO. Furthermore, the Sb-doped ZnO microsphere film based electrochemical biosensor exhibits a good sensing performance for the detection of hydrogen peroxide, with a sensitivity of 271μAmM−1cm−2 which is more than three times higher than that of the un-doped ZnO biosensor.

Abstract:Surface-patterned ZnO thin films were fabricated by direct imprinting on ZnO sol and subsequent annealing process. The polymer-based ZnO sols were deposited on various substrates for the nanoimprint lithography and converted to surface-patterned ZnO gel films during the thermal curing nanoimprint process. Finally, crystalline ZnO films were obtained by subsequent annealing of the patterned ZnO gel films. The optical characterization indicates that the surface patterning of ZnO thin films can lead to an enhanced transmittance. Large-scale ZnO thin films with different patterns can be fabricated by various easy-made ordered templates using this combination of sol-gel and nanoimprint lithography techniques.

Abstract:By using sol-gel spin coating method nanostructured Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3(PZT) ferroelectric thin films were fabricated on the Si substrates coated by nanoporous alumina membranes with average pore sizes of 20-100nm,in which metal(Au or Pt)nanowires were embedded as a part of the bottom electrode.The dielectric,ferroelectric properties and microstructure of the nanostructured PZT thin films were characterized.The dielectric measurements demonstrated that the dielectric constant of the PZT nanofilms with a thickness of 25nm decreased quickly from 860 to 100 as increasing the frequency below 104 Hz,and then remained almost constant of 100 as further increasing the frequency up to 106 Hz.Such a fast decrease of the dielectric constant in the low frequency region was resulted from the dielectric relaxation of space charges accumulated at the interfaces between the nanofilm and the(bottom and top)metal electrodes.The dielectric loss peak observed near 4000Hz was contributed from the resonant absorption effect of the space charges.The polarization-electric field hystere-sis loops of the nanostructured PZT films with a thickness 100nm showed that the remanent polarization of the PZT nanofilm was 50μC/cm2 and coercive field of 500kV/cm.Cross-sectional TEM images showed that the nanostructured PZT films contacted directly with the bottom electrode(metal nanowires),and the interface between them exhibited some degree of waviness.It was found that some Au nanowires became into branches at their ends after post-annealing the PZT nanofilms,whereas such a phenomenon was effectively prohibited by using Pt nanowires.A selection of proper post-annealing temperature was the critical processing parameter for fabricating nanostructured PZT ferroelectric thin films as making a trade-off between the ordered metal nanowires within the nanoporous alumina membranes and the crystallinity of ferroelectric nanofilms.
A facile method to fabricate ZnO hollow spheres and their photocatalytic property.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel and facile method for the fabrication of ZnO hollow spheres. In this approach, zinc ions were first adsorbed onto the surfaces of sulfonated polystyrene core-shell template spheres, and then reacted with NaOH to form a ZnO crystal nucleus, which was followed by a growth step to form ZnO nanoshells. During the formation of ZnO nanoshells or later on, the template spheres were "dissolved" in the same media to obtain ZnO hollow spheres directly. Neither additional dissolution nor calcination process was needed in this method to remove the templates, and the reaction conditions were very mild: neither high temperature nor long time was needed. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis were used to investigate the morphology, surface composition, crystalline structure, specific surface area, and porosity of the ZnO hollow spheres, respectively. UV-visible spectra show that these ZnO hollow spheres had very,good photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:ZrO2-doped TiO2 hollow nanospheres with anatase phase are efficiently fabricated via functionalized negatively charged polystyrene (PS) spheres without any surfactant or polyelectrolyte. The resulting Ti1−xZrxO2 (hereafter denoted as TZ) hollow nanospheres are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), nitrogen sorption, and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis). The Zr4+ incorporation decreases the anatase crystallite size, increases the specific surface area, and changes the pore size distribution. Furthermore, it induces enrichment of electron charge density around Ti4+ ions and blueshift of absorption edges. The TZ hollow nanospheres doped with moderate ZrO2 (molar ratio, Ti:Zr=10:1) exhibit better photocatalytic activity than the other samples for the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution, which is correlated with the effect of Zr4+ doping on the physicochemical properties in terms of surface structures, phase structures, and the electronic structures.

Abstract:The preparation of high specific area (86.5 m2/g) ZnO nanospheres with good photocatalytic efficiency via a simple, green and efficient mechanochemical method was reported in this work. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and UV–Vis. The ball milling parameters were improved to reduce the agglomeration hazard during the ball milling process, and the specific surface area, band gap and photocatalytic efficiency were investigated in relation to ball milling time. Our study developed the opportunity for the low-cost and facile synthesis of a high specific surface area photocatalyst on a large scale for future industrial applications.

Abstract:Porous ZnWO4 films have been fabricated on Indium–tin oxide (ITO) glass and its photoelectrochemical properties and high photocatalytic activities towards degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) has been investigated. Using amorphous heteronuclear complex as precursor and with the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG, molecular weight=400), the porous ZnWO4 films have been achieved at the temperature of 500°C via dip-coating method. It is composed of approximately 70nm-sized particles and exhibits substantial porosity. The textures and porosity of ZnWO4 films are dependent on preparation factors, such as the ratio of precursor/PEG and the annealing conditions. The formation mechanism of porous ZnWO4 films was proposed. The porous ZnWO4 films exhibited high photocatalytic activities towards degrading RhB. The top of valence band and the bottom of the conduction band was estimated to be −0.56 and 3.45eV (vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)), respectively.
