Abstract:One-dimensional to three-dimensional lanthanide coordination polymers 1-8 based on benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylic acid (H3BIDC) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at different pH values, generally formulated as {[Pr(HBIDC)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) (1), [Yb(HBIDC)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)](n) (2), and [Ln(HBIDC)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(3)](n) [Ln = Ho (3), and Tb (4)] and {[Ln(H2BIDC)(HBIDC)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O}(n) [Ln = Tb (5), Sm (6), Dy (7), and Gd (8), H(2)ox = oxalic acid]. All coordination polymers have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structural diversity, luminescence and thermal properties of all coordination polymers have been investigated. Coordination polymers 1-8 exhibit four different structural types: topological analysis has given the 3-D pcu network, with the point symbol of {4(12).6(3)} in coordination polymer 1. Coordination polymer 2 exhibits a 4-connected 4(4) topology, and coordination polymers 3-4 appear as 2-D (6,3)-connected hcb network topology. The 1-D helical infinite chain of coordination polymers 5-8 around the crystallographic 21 axis spread along the b axis direction, with different 1-D helical infinite chains forming 3-D supramolecular framework via hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions. The coordination polymers 4 and 5 could be triggered to have intense characteristic lanthanide-centered green luminescence under UV excitation in the solid state at room and liquid nitrogen temperature, or dispersed in CH2Cl2 at 77 K. In coordination polymers 4 and 5, the oxalic acid introduced into coordination polymer 4 as a second ligand further sensitized the trivalent terbium ion, and resulted in longer fluorescence lifetimes of coordination polymer 4 (1058.58 mu s at 298 K, 679.42 mu s at 77 K in the solid-state, 867.82 mu s in CH2Cl2 at 77 K) than coordination polymer 5 (595.06 mu s at 298 K, 583.19 mu s at 77 K in the solid-state, 584.38 mu s in CH2Cl2 at 77 K). In coordination polymers 6 and 7, we not only measured emission spectra in the visible region, but also detected the infrequent NIR emission spectra in the near infrared region of samarium and dysprosium ions. The singlet excited state (30 303 cm(-1)) and the lowest triplet state energy level (24 390 cm(-1)) of H3BIDC ligand were calculated based on the UV-vis absorbance edges of ligand and the phosphorescence spectrum of Gd(III) coordination polymer (8) at 77 K, showing that the effective extent of energy transfer from H3BIDC ligand to lanthanide ions follows the sequence of Tb3+, Dy3+ > Sm3+. Finally, thermal behaviors of all coordination polymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, which exhibited high thermal stability.
Novel double layer lanthanide metal-organic networks for sensing applications.

Abstract:A trifunctional aromatic building block (H2L) containing three different types of functional groups (carboxyl C([double bond, length as m-dash]O)OH, aldehyde C([double bond, length as m-dash]O)H, and O-ether) was applied for the hydrothermal synthesis of two novel lanthanide 2D coordination polymers [Ln(μ-HL)(μ3-L)(phen)]n {Ln = Tb (1) and Eu (2); H2L = 5-methoxy-(4-benzaldehyde)-1,3-benzene dicarboxylic acid; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline}. Both compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and reveal very complicated 2D metal-organic double layers with the 3,4L27 topology. The presence of free aldehyde groups positioned outside of the double layers opens up a possibility of using them as functional groups toward sensing amines and small organic molecules. The fluorescence measurements for the Tb derivative 1 reveal that it acts as an efficient fluorescence sensor for p-phenylenediamine, benzidine and acetone molecules via a luminescence quenching effect. A similar sensing behavior was observed for the Eu compound 2. Moreover, thin-films of 1-PEG on glass (1-PEG-glass thin-film material) were fabricated and investigated for the detection of amine vapors.
A Lanthanide-Containing Coordination Polymer Using Tetraphenylethene-Based Linkers with Selective Fe 3+ Sensing and Efficient Iodine Adsorption Activities

Abstract:As a star ligand, the construction of coordination polymers (CPs) based on tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene (H4TCPE) has drawn much attention, due to not only the various coordination configurations but also the intriguing chromophore feature causing aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Herein, by the solvothermal reaction of H4TCPE as connected nodes with lanthanide La(III) salts, the first example of the La(III)-TCPE-based CP (1) has been obtained. The structural analyses indicate that 1 exhibits a 3D framework connected by the sharing carboxylate groups with two kinds of 1D rhombic channels when viewed along the c direction. The photophysical properties of 1 have been explored by luminescence, photoluminescence decay, and quantum yield in the solid state. 1 shows strong luminescence in tetrahydrofuran that was attributed to a "pseudo-AIE process" and sensitive and selective sensing activity of Fe3+ toward metal ions via the obvious luminescent quenching. The sensing mechanism has been investigated and reveals a synergetic effect of the competitive absorption and weak interactions between 1 and Fe3+. Moreover, the high porosity, multiple conjugated π-electrons within the tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene backbone, and the uncoordinated carboxyl oxygen sites in this material also provide the capacity for iodine adsorption. Abstract:Two zinc(II) coordination polymers (CPs), namely, {[Zn2(µ5-tzbt)(µ-trz)]·3.5H2O}n (trz = 1,2,4-triazolate) (1) and {[Zn2(µ5-tzbt)(µ-OH)(phen)]·4H2O}n (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) (2) have been constructed from 1-(triazol-1-yl)-2,4,6-benzene tricarboxylic acid (H3tzbt) under hydrothermal conditions. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 1 displays 3D framework containing left - handed and right - handed helical chains, whilst 2 is a 2D layered structure. These new CPs both exhibit intensive fluorescence emission at room temperature. Notably, they perform as host for the encapsulation of Ln(III) ions and serve as an antenna to sensitize Tb(III) ions. By encapsulating different Ln(III) ions, both Eu0.2Tb0.8@1 and Eu3+@2 present white-light emission. In addition, 2 exhibits highly luminescent sensing properties for acetone.
A 2D Zinc Coordination Polymer Constructed from Long and Flexible N-containing Tricarboxylate Ligand for Encapsulating Ln(3+) Ions and Luminescent Sensing

Abstract:A new anionic coordination polymer (CP) has been solvothermally prepared with the long and flexible N-containing tricarboxylate ligand 5-[(3-(4-carboxyphenyl)-1H-pyrazol-1-y1)methyl]isophthahc acid (H3L) and zinc ions. {(Me2NH2)[Zn(L)(H2O)] DMF}(n) (1) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) exhibits a fascinating undulant two dimensional (2D) layered structure and adjacent layers are further linked by pi-pi interactions to form three dimensional (3D) frameworks with the rhombic channels along the b axis, in which the (Me2NH2)(+) cations are located. 1 emits blue light in solid state and possesses highly stability in different organic solvents. Moreover, it exhibits excellent luminescent sensing properties for Fe3+ and Cr2O72 with high sensitivity and selectivity, respectively. The K-sv value of Fe3+ ions is 2.06 x 10(4) M (1), while 1.35 x 10(4) M (1) for Cr2O72 ions. The luminescence quenching can be attributed to resonance energy transfer between 1 and analytes. Furthermore, the lanthanide ions doped materials Ln(3+)@1 are successfully prepared by cation-exchange, in which Eu3+/Tb3+ codoped materials show tunable luminescence and white-light emission by adjusting different molar ratios of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of novel lanthanide-based coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) from flexible organic ligands is still attractive and challenging. In this work, two isostructural Ln-CPs with a unique 2D network, namely, [Ln2(H3L)2(DMF)]]n (Ln = Dy for 1, Tb for 2) based on a flexible polycarboxylic acid ligand hexakis(4-carboxylato-phenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (H6L), have been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Significantly, it is the first observation of polycarboxylic acid ligands participating in coordination in the construction of coordination polymers in the form of semi-deprotonation. Magnetic measurements showed the presence of field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in complex 1. The luminescence property of 2 had been studied in the solid state at room temperature.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) {(Me2NH2+)[Ln(L)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (1-5) [Ln = Eu(1), Tb(2), Gd(3), Sm(4) and Pr(5)], were synthesized through the self-assembly of symmetric tetracarboxylic acid 3,5-bis (3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-pyridine (H4L) and different lanthanide ions. Ln-CPs 1-5 are isostructural and show two-dimensional (2D) layered structure constructed from LnO(9) tricapped trigonal prisms and L4- ligands. Solid state luminescent studies illustrate that 1, 2 and 4 exhibit the characteristic emission of the corresponding Ln(3+) ions, while 3 reveals blue emission arising from the organic ligand and 5 shows characteristic luminescence emission bands of Pr3+ ions in the near-infrared region (NIR). Notably, 1 exhibits good luminescent sensing for metal ions, such as Cr2O72- ions, MnO4- ions, Fe3+ ions, and small organic molecules, including acetone and trini-trophenol (TNP).

Abstract:A series of new 2D-layered structural rare-earth coordination polymers with the general formal [Ln(C8H4O5)(H2O)5]·(H2O)·(C8H4O5)1/2 (Ln=Eu for (1); Gd for (2); Tb for (3); Dy for (4); and Er for (5)) have been yielded by hydrothermal synthesis. The coordination polymers crystallize in monoclinic space group C/2c with a=19.838(16), b=10.529(8), c=17.752(14)Å, β=107.503(14)° for (1), with a=19.823(7), b=10.552(4), c=17.762(6)Å, β=107.443(6)° for (2), with a=19.770(4), b=10.519(2), c=17.698(4)Å, β=107.52(3)° for (3), with a=19.632(2), b=10.492(2), c=17.617(3)Å, β=107.470(12)° for (4), with a=19.648(7), b=10.480(3), c=17.598(6)Å, β=107.502(6)° for (5), respectively. And the metal ions (Ln3+) are located in nine-member coordination environment. The carboxyl groups from 5-hydroxyisophthalate chelate the metal ions to form 1D helical cation chains. It is interesting that these helical cation chains are arranged to form 2D anion–cation layers by the uncoordinated ligands' anions as template. And the luminescence properties of the rare-earth ions are studied in the paper.

Abstract:Three complexes of bifunctional 5-substituted tetrazolatecarboxylate ligands [2-(5-(pyrazin-2-yl)-2H-tetrazol-2-yl) acetic acid (Hpztza), 3-(5-amino-2H-tetrazol-1(5H)-yl) propanoic acid (Hatzp), and N,N'-bis(tetrazol-5-yl)anime-N2,N2'-diacetic acid (H(2)datza)], namely a mononuclear structure [La(pztza)(2)(H2O)(5)]center dot 4H(2)O center dot pztza (1), a 1D polymeric chain structure [La-2(atzp)(4)(H2O)(8)]center dot 2NO(3)center dot 2H(2)O (2), and a 2D layer network [La(datza)(H2O)(3)]center dot 4H(2)O (3) were prepared and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of these complexes are controlled not only by the number and different coordination modes of the tetrazole-carboxylate ligands but also the different 5-substituents of the tetrazole ring. The complexes show ligand-centered luminescence at room temperature in the solid state. The obvious enhancements in luminescence make these complexes to be the potential materials for optical use.

Abstract:Five new isomorphic coordination polymers of the Co(II) ion, namely, {[Co2L(bpy)0.5(H2O)2]·2H2O}n (1), {[Co2L(pbyb)0.5(H2O)2]·3H2O}n (2), {[Co2L(dpe)0.5(H2O)2]·2H2O}n (3), {[Co2L(dpa)0.5(H2O)2]·2.5H2O}n (4), and {[Co2L(dip)0.5(H2O)2]·3.5H2O}n (5) (H4L = cis,cis,cis,cis-1,2,3,4-cyclopentaneteracarboxylic acid, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, pbyb = 1,4-di(pyridine-4-yl)benzene, dpe = 1,2-di(pyridine-4-yl)ethane, dpa = (E)-1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)diazene, and dip = 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The L(4-) ligand maintains its original conformation of SSRR in all of these compounds, but {Co5L}n clusters show mirror coordination symmetry in 1, 2, and 4 while the clusters in 3 and 5 do not. The addition of different N-ligands can tune the distance between {Co2L}n layers and change the pore structures of the frameworks. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that 1-5 exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior.
In Situ Synthesis of a Series of Lanthanide Coordination Polymers Based on N-heterocyclic Carboxylate Ligands: Crystal Structure and Luminescence

Abstract:A series of novel lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) have been constructed by 2-(pyridin-2-yl-N-oxide)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate (H3POIDC) ligand, which derived from the partial oxidation of 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate (H3PIDC) in situ reaction. Compounds 1–3 with the infinite left- and right-hand helices show 3D supramolecular structure constructing from 1D chains connecting each other through strong hydrogen-bond interactions. Compounds 4–7 show 2D layered structure with sql topology which are built from 4-connected nodes. Moreover, compounds 1–6 show strong luminescence emission in solid state, especially compound 1 exhibits obvious luminescence quenching for Hg2+ ion.
Series of Resorcin[4]arene-Based Lanthanide Coordination Polymers and Selective Luminescent Sensing Properties

Abstract:By using tetracarboxylatoresorcin[4]arene 2,8,14,20-tetrapentyl-6,12,18,23-tetra- methoxy-4,10,16,22-tetra-carboxymethoxy-resorcin[4]arene (H4L), eight lanthanide-based coordination polymers (CPs), [M(HL)(DMF)(H2O)2]·3H2O (M = Tb 1, Eu 2, Gd 3, Yb 4 and Sm 5) and [M(HL)(DMF)(H2O)] (M = Ce 6, Pr 7 and La 8), have been constructed. Isostructural CPs 1–5 exhibit charming ribbons built with rare earth cations and cup-like HL3− anions. The ribbons are lengthened by hydrogen bonds to constitute supramolecular layers, respectively. CPs 6–8 are isostructural and show unique layer networks. The luminescent properties of 1 and 2 in solid states were studied. The detection of CPs 1 and 2 towards metal cations, polyoxometalates (POMs) and organic small molecules by luminescent quenching and enhancement process has been systematically investigated.

Abstract:Luminescent metal–organic frameworks Ln3+@1 (1:[Zn2(bpda)(chdc)2]∝) were synthesized. Through cation exchange, the novel compound 1 was induced to capture Tb3+, Sm3+, and Eu3+, and the photophysical properties of the resultant visible-emitting complexes were studied. The layered complex 1 was demonstrated to encapsulate and sensitize visible-emitting lanthanide cations within aqueous solutions.

Abstract:An in situ hydrolysis of the P-Cl bonds of the carbophosphazene [{NC(NMe2)}2{NPCl2}] (LPCl2) in the presence of hydrated lanthanide(III) nitrates in a dichloromethane and methanol (2:1) solvent mixture afforded a series of novel 1D coordination polymers: [{Ln(LHPO2)3(NO3)2(CH3OH)(H2O)} (Cl)]n {where Ln(III) = Gd (1), Tb(2), Dy(3), or Er(4) and LHPO2 is the hydrolyzed carbophosphazene (LPCl2) ligand}. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that complexes 1-4 are isostructural and crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system having P21/c space group. The coordination polymers are formed because of the involvement of the geminal P(O)(OH) moieties of the carbophosphazene ligand. Each lanthanide (III) ion is 9-coordinate (9O) in a distorted muffin geometry. Magnetic measurements revealed that both DyIII and ErIII analogues exhibit field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior at 0.8 kOe and 2.2 k Oe, respectively. At such dc fields, the dynamic magnetic susceptibility displays complex behavior with a triple magnetic relaxation contribution for 3, while two contributions were identified for 4. The observed static and dynamic magnetic behavior for complexes 1-4 were further rationalized with the aid of BS-DFT and CASSCF/SO-RASSI/SINGLE_ANISO calculations.

Structural change of supramolecular coordination polymers of itaconic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline along lanthanide series

Abstract:Five new supramolecular lanthanide coordination polymers of itaconic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline, {[La2(IA)3(phen)2]·2H2O}n (1), {[Ln(IA)1.5(phen)]·xH2O}n [x=1, Ln=Eu (2); x=0.25, Ln=Dy (3)], and [Ln(IA)1.5(phen)]n [Ln=Er (4); Yb (5)], with three different structures were obtained by hydro- and solvothermal techniques and structural changes along lanthanide series were discussed.

Abstract:Two novel lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs), [Ln11(OH)8(4,4′-oba)12(CH3COO)2]·(CH3)2NH2·3DMF·nH2O, (Ln=Yb(1), Er(2), 4,4′-H2oba=4,4′-oxybis(benzoic acid), DMF=N, N′-dimethylformamide, n=2 for 1, 3 for 2) have been self-assembled from the reaction of hexanuclear lanthanide complexes with flexible V-shaped organic ligands under solvothermal condition. Structural analyses reveal that they are isomorphous and feature a complicated three-dimensional (3D) framework containing novel octanuclear [Ln8(OH)8]16+ units. Moreover, they show the characteristic luminescence emission bands of the corresponding lanthanide ions in the near-infrared regions in the solid-state. Additionally, magnetic property of 1 shows typical antiferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:Developing photochromic materials and acquiring fundamental knowledge of their underlying photophysics is significant in diverse fields, including optoelectronics, sensing, catalysis, data storage, and more. Herein, we demonstrate how the photochromism of coordination polymers can be realized by creating lanthanide contraction, whose role in directing photophysics has previously remained elusive. Integrating different lanthanide cations and a π-electron conjugated terpyridine-based ligand (tpbz–) affords nine isomorphous one-dimensional lanthanide coordination polymers of the formula Ln(tpbz)3 (where the lanthanide [Ln] ranges from europium to lutetium). The decreasing ionic radii of the Ln centers across the 4f block result in increasingly condensed packing of the metal-ligand assembly. This trend affords a spectrally selective photochromic response in the lutetium polymer Lu(tpbz)3, contrasting sharply with the nonphotochromic earlier analogs. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the chromism can be attributed to the progressively enhanced intermolecular charge transfer of adjacent tpbz– moieties induced by either Ln contraction or external pressure.

Abstract:Two new isostructural lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) [Ln2(bpdc)3(DMF)2] (Ln=Tb for 1, Eu for 2) with two kinds of one-dimensional channels along the a axis, were synthesized by 2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid (H2bpdc) under solvothermal conditions. With exposed Lewis acid Ln3+ centers, 1 as a heterogeneous catalyst shows good catalytic reactivity and selectivity for the Strecker reaction affording medium to excellent conversion yields. Luminescent studies illustrate that 1 and 2 show intensive green and red luminescence triggered by efficient antenna effect of ligands under UV light, respectively. Moreover, 1 exhibits sensitive fluorescent response to Cu2+ in DMF solution.

Abstract:Reaction of hydrated lanthanide (III) nitrates and 4'-(3-carboxyphenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (HL) under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of auxiliary ligands afforded four series of lanthanide coordination polymers, [Ln2(L)2(ox)2(H2O)2]n (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2)), [Ln(L)(glu)]n (Ln = Eu (3)), [Ln(L)(adip)(H2O)]n (Ln = Pr (4), Sm (5)), [Ln2(L)2(1,3-bdc)2]n (Ln = Pr (6), Nd (7), Sm (8), Eu (9)), where H2ox, H2glu, H2adip and H2(1,3-bdc) denote oxalic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid and benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid, which have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 possess similar structures and display a two dimensional 6-connected hxl net ground on loop-like binuclear Ln2 units with the (36·46·53) topology. Compound 3 presents a fascinating 3D framework with paddle-wheel units, which exhibits a 2-nodal (3,10)-connected 3,10-T9 net with (418·624·83)(43)2 topology. Isostructural compounds 4 and 5 exhibit a (3,6)-connected kgd net with (43)2(46·66·83) topology. Isomorphous 6–9 feature a 3D (3,10)-connected 3,10-T9 net with (418·624·83)(43)2 topology. The structural diversity adequately demonstrate the abundant coordination chemistry of carboxylate terpyridine derivatives and the coordination geometries of LnIII ions, as well as the effects of introducing auxiliary ligands. Moreover, detailed discussion toward the photoluminescence and thermal stabilities of 1–9 were also conducted.
