Abstract:This paper summarizes the findings of a three-year research project into the factors affecting the colour appearance of complex images on different media and under different viewing conditions. A series of experiments was conducted, with observers using the magnitude estimation technique to scale the lightness, colourfulness and hue of a sequence of coloured test patches in a complex field. The parameters studied included the type of illuminant, level of illumination, lightness of background, and medium (luminous colours were displayed on a high-resolution colour monitor and non-luminous colours were presented as patches on white, grey and black cards in a viewing cabinet). A mathematical model, based on that developed by Hunt, was shown to perform better in predicting colour appearance under a variety of viewing conditions than any other known model. Further experiments investigated the effect of chromatic induction on colour appearance, by varying the lightness, colourfulness and hue of an induction field surrounding the test colour.
