Abstract:Transformation of mechanically interlocked molecules (e.g., rotaxanes and catenanes) into nanoscale materials or devices is an important step towards their real applications. In our current work, an azobenzene-modified β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) derivative that can form a self-inclusion complex in aqueous solution was prepared. The self-included β-CD derivative was then functionalized onto a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) surface via a ligand-exchange reaction in aqueous solution, leading to the formation of AuNP-[1]rotaxane hybrids. Corresponding non-self-included β-CD derivative functionalized AuNPs were also developed in a DMF/H<sub>2</sub>O mixture solution for control experiments. These hybrids were fully characterized by UV-vis and circular dichroism spectroscopies, together with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The competitive binding behavior of the hybrids with an adamantane dimer was investigated.

Abstract:For the excellent complex and recognition function,cyclodextrins have attracted wide research interest. In order to utilize these special properties of cyclodextrins more effectively, immobilization of cyclodextrins,with specific orientation,upon solid substrate is necessary in many potential applications. This paper summarizes the common methods to prepare monolayer/multilayers of cyclodextrins on solid substrate,including the Langmuir-Blodgett method,Layer-by-Layer technique,and chemical adsorption. These methods are compared and evaluated. The application situation of these systems is introduced. Finally,based on preparations and applications,the future research directions of cyclodextrins monolayer/multilayers membranes are discussed. Improving routine methods and developing simpler methods will be the key research of this area in the future.

Abstract:Functionalized surfaces have many applications in areas such as sensor technology, selective adsorbents and controlled drug release. In this paper, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films functionalized with a layer of cyclodextrin (CD) were prepared by using a facile and practical interfacial molecular self-assembly strategy. The surface and film structures were characterized and confirmed with FTIR-ATR and XPS spectroscopy. The prepared films were also tested for adsorption capacities for molecules of congo red and methylene blue and inclusion capabilities for antibacterial drug ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. For the CD layer preparation, amphiphilic cyclodextrin (am-beta-CD)was synthesized by region-selective modification of the primary hydroxyl groups of (3-cyclodextrin with long aliphatic chains, and then self-assembled on the interface between water and a PDMS organic casting solution. A layer of am-beta-CD molecules was assembled onto the surface of the PDMS substrate via the mechanisms of molecular chain entanglements and hydrophobic interactions, which was confirmed by various characterization techniques. Fluorescent molecular staining experiments indicated that the self-assembled cyclodextrins layer on the PDMS substrate surface mostly retained the ability to include guest molecules. Adsorption tests showed that the functionalized films had a much higher adsorption capacity for the dye molecules than that of bare PDMS films. Inclusion experiments also showed that ciprofloxacin hydrochloride loaded functionlized PDMS films exhibited excellent antibacterial performance, indicating that the films could be used as a reservoir to store small drug molecules. All these results demonstrated that the novel films prepared could have potential applications in various areas, such as drug-loaded system and water purification. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Host-guest systems have been widely used for nanostructure construction; however, studying host-guest behavior by immobilizing the guest molecule on a substrate's surface faces great challenges. In this study, phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) was selected as the ideal candidate to fabricate a guest molecule self-assembled monolayer (SAM). A remarkable PTES SAM growth mechanism, which includes two growth stages, was revealed. By controlling the PTES SAM formation in the first growth stage, the residual PTES ethoxyl groups will hydrolyze in a cyclodextrin (CD) aqueous solution, and the hydrolyzed PTES SAM, as a guest molecule, can provide suitable steric space for forming alpha- and beta-CD inclusion complexes. The experiments demonstrated that the inclusion configurations for alpha- and beta-CD SAMs are different, with the alpha-CD molecule tilting relative to the silica surface in order to include the PTES phenyl group; whereas the secondary surface of the beta-CD remains parallel to the silica surface due to its large cavity. The results corroborated that this simple, yet effective, platform can be readily used to investigate host-guest systems, and it has huge potential for fabricating materials containing CD monolayers. The article provided detail information about the synthesis and applications of both of rotaxanes formed by cyclodextrin ring and polymer axes, and supramolecular polymer without polymer backbone.
Controllable Self-Assembly of Gold Nanorods <i>via</i> Host-Guest Interaction between Cyclodextrins and Surfactants

Abstract:The self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals has emerged as a powerful strategy for the bottom-up fabrication of functional materials and nanodevices. Recently, the self-assembly of gold nanorods (GNRs) has attracted significant attention because of their unique plasmonic properties, but the realization of their adjustable self-assembly of GNRs through facile and effective approaches remains challenging. In this work, the controllable self-assembly of GNRs in aqueous solution was realized through the host-guest interactions of cyclodextrins (CDs) and the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) molecules adsorbed on the surface of the GNRs. The self-assembly of GNRs was readily achieved by the addition of aqueous alpha-CD solutions with varied concentrations into aqueous dispersions of CTAB-stabilized GNRs. At a relatively low alpha-CD concentration, slow aggregation of the GNRs occurred, resulting in their side-by-side assembly. This was revealed by the blue shift of the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band in the absorption spectra and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. On the other hand, when a higher concentration of alpha-CD was added, fast aggregation of the GNRs occurred, resulting in their end-to-end assembly. This was revealed by the red shift in the LSPR band together with the TEM observations. If beta-CD was employed instead of alpha-CD, the self-assembly of GNRs could also be induced, although a relatively higher concentration of beta-CD was required to achieve the extent of aggregation similar to that induced by alpha-CD, indicating that the supramolecular host-guest interaction between CDs and the surfactant CTAB was crucial to the directed self-assembly of GNRs. Furthermore, the alpha-CD-induced assembly was inhibited on addition of excess CTAB, confirming that the supramolecular interaction of alpha-CD and CTAB played a key role in directing the self-assembly of the GNRs. Based on these experimental results, a possible mechanism for the alpha-CD-induced self-assembly of GNRs was proposed as follows: at a lower alpha-CD concentration, the gradual formation of the host-guest inclusion complex alpha-CD/CTAB led to the partial replacement of the highly charged CTAB bilayers adsorbed on the GNRs by the less charged complex, which resulted in a slow side-by-side assembly of the GNRs; at a higher alpha-CD concentration, the CTAB bilayers were quickly replaced by the alpha-CD/CTAB complex, and the CTAB molecules adsorbed at both ends of the GNRs were almost completely replaced, resulting in a fast end-to-end assembly of the GNRs. Additionally, on the basis of the hydrolysis of alpha-cyclodextrin catalyzed by alpha-amylase, the self-assembly of GNRs directed by the host-guest interaction could be used to realize the feasible detection of alpha-amylase in solutions. This self-assembly strategy mediated by the host-guest interaction may be extendable to other colloidal systems involving surfactants adsorbed on the surface of nanoparticles, and may open new avenues for the controllable self-assembly of non-spherical nanoparticles.
Selective and Regenerable Surface Based on Β-Cyclodextrin for Low-Density Lipoprotein Adsorption

Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a family of cyclic oligosaccharides, whose unique hydrophilic outer surface and lipophilic central cavity facilitate the formation of inclusion complexes with various biomolecules, such as cholesterol and phospholipids, via multi-interactions. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the main carrier of cholesterol in bloodstream and is associated with the progression of atherosclerosis. The surface of LDL is composed of a shell of phospholipids monolayer containing most of the free unesterified cholesterol as well as the single copy of apolipoprotein B-100. To date, various LDL adsorbents have been fabricated to interact with the biomolecules on LDL surface. Owing to its elegant structure, CD is considered to be a promising choice for preparation of more economical and effective LDL-adsorbing materials. Therefore, in this study, interaction between β-CD and LDL in solution was investigated by dynamic light scattering, circular dichroism, and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Further, a supramolecular surface based on β-CD was simply prepared by self-assembled monolayer on gold surface. The effect of hydrogen bond and the cavity of β-CD on the interaction between β-CD and LDL was particularly explored by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis. The SPR results showed that such β-CD-modified surface exhibited good selectivity and could be largely regenerated by sodium dodecyl sulfate wash. This study may extend the understanding of the interaction between LDL and LDL adsorbent or the design and development of more efficient and lower-cost LDL adsorbents in the future.

Abstract:Desolvation processes, though common in self-assembled biological structures, are rarely evidenced and utilized in the design of crystalline architectures. In this study, we introduce a novel approach using the [Mo8S8O8(OH)8(guest)]2- complex, formed by the self-condensation of four [MoV 2O2S2]2- fragments around a guest unit (MoVIO6H4 or oxalate), as a chaotropic scaffold for crystallizing hybrid organic-inorganic systems with natural cyclodextrins. Our findings reveal that β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) facilitates the formation of host-guest complexes, while α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) induces the formation of a Kagome-type structure with significant voids. These new compounds were thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction (both powder and single-crystal), N2 adsorption, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, solution studies using 1H NMR titration and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) demonstrated pre-association of the building units in solution. These results enhance our understanding of the design principles for supramolecular structures composed of inorganic polyanions and cyclodextrins.
Controlled Synthesis of Dendritic Gold Nanostructures Assisted by Supramolecular Complexes of Surfactant with Cyclodextrin

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of well-defined planar Au nanodendrites with a symmetric single-crystalline structure consisting of trunks and side branches grown along the 211 directions was realized by reducing chloroauric acid in aqueous mixed solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD). It has been revealed that the formation of the supramolecular complexes of DTAB with beta-CD due to host-guest interaction is indispensable for the fabrication of these unique planar Au nanodendrites, and a proper CD-to-DTAB molar ratio is essential to their exclusive formation. A variety of Au nanostructures, such as branched particles consisting of rodlike branches and flowerlike particles consisting of platelike petals, could be readily obtained by simply changing the CD-to-DTAB molar ratio. Moreover, the obtained Au nanodendrites exhibited both a good electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of methanol and a good surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensitivity for detecting p-aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules, indicating their potential applications including catalysis, biosensing, and nanodevices.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of Au nanoparticles with adjustable sizes (10−50 nm) and narrow size distributions (<10% in standard deviation) was realized by reducing hydrochloroauric acid with α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) in an alkaline aqueous solution, which was very simple and “green”. It was revealed that a proper pH was essential to the formation of stable dispersions of nonaggregated Au nanoparticles and a higher pH would lead to the welding of the Au nanoparticles into one-dimensional (1D) wires or three-dimensional (3D) aggregates. Moreover, 1D assembly of α-CD-capped Au nanoparticles into nanochains was readily induced by partial removal of the organic stabilization shell, which resulted from the host−guest interactions between α-CDs capped on Au nanoparticle surfaces and toluene molecules. Abstract:Gold (III) cyclometalated based amphiphiles in aqueous media have been revealed with excellent supramolecular transformations to external stimuli to open new pathways for soft functional material fabrications. Herein, we report a new chiral cyclometalated gold (III) amphiphile (GA) assembling into lamellar nanostructures in aqueous media confirmed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Counterion exchange with D-, L-, or racemic-camphorsulfonates features the significant supramolecular helicity enhancements, enabling transformations of GA from lamellar structure to vesicles and to nanotubes with multi-equivalents of counterion. The limited cytotoxicity of GA in aqueous media exhibits good biocompatibility.

Abstract:A novel kind of electroactive self-assembled monolayer (SAM) has been successfully prepared through the following procedure: (1) formation of inclusion complexes (denoted as CD/C8VC10SH) between N-(n-octyl)-N'-(10-mercaptodecyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide (C8VC10SH) and alpha-, beta-cyclodextrin (CD) under a mild condition; (2) spontaneous formation of SAM of CD/C8VC10SH on gold electrodes at room temperature. High-resolution H-1-NMR spectrum was used to confirm the formation of CD/C8VC10SH. Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the redox behavior of the resulting monolayers and chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to characterize their electron transfer kinetics. It was found that the redox sites in SAM of CD/C8VC10SH are effectively diluted, with a larger electron transfer rate constant than that of SAM of C8VC10SH.

Abstract:Highly ordered gold nanoparticle multilayer films were achieved conveniently using didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) films as a template. The template was produced by casting DDAB chloroform solution onto the surface of a (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane-modified indium tin oxide substrate and then evaporating the organic solvent. Gold nanoparticle multilayer films were prepared by soaking the template in 2.6 nm colloidal gold solution for 120 min. The well-ordered superlattice structure of the DDAB template and the gold nanoparticle multilayer films was identified by x-ray diffraction. The characterizations of the gold nanoparticle multilayer films by UV-vis spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammerty were described in detail. The application of the as-prepared gold nanoparticle multilayer films in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was investigated by using Rhodamine 6G as a probe molecule. It was found that the colloidal gold nanoparticle multilayer films exhibit remarkable enhancement ability and can be used as SERS substrates.

Abstract:This communication describes the use of polyelectrolyte multilayer as a preformed matrix in electrochemical deposition to adjust the morphology of gold clusters, and only the surface covered with dendritic gold clusters shows a super-hydrophobic property, with the contact angle above 150 degrees and the tilt angle less than 1.5 degrees , after the surface further chemisorbed with a self-assembled monolayer of n-dodecanethiol.

Abstract:We present a two-step route to produce a hierarchical cauliflower-like gold structure that involves the adsorption of gold nanoparticles described by the random sequential adsorption (RSA) model, followed by the electrochemical growth on the surfaces of the primary gold nanoparicles. The structure was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer analysis (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). After fluoroalkylsilane modification, the cauliflower-like structured surface exhibits a high contact angle and a low sliding angle.

Abstract:A hierarchically assembled necklace composed of amphiphilic diblock copolymer micelles is exquisitely produced by capitalizing on two concurrent self-assembly processes at different scales (i.e., "breath figure" strategy of diblock copolymer micelles solution evaporating in humid air to yield rings at the microscopic scale in conjunction with self-assembly of diblock copolymer micelles within individual ring at the nanometer scale). Intriguingly, hierarchical rings of diblock copolymer micelles comprising gold precursors or fluorescent dyes can also be crafted using this strategy. Upon exposure to hydrophilic block-selective solvent, core-corona inversion of micelles within the microscopic rings occurs. In contrast, such inversion is inhibited when the micelles are impregnated by gold precursors. This simple yet effective strategy for engineering diblock copolymer micelles may be extended to produce hierarchically assembled structures consisting of other functional block copolymers (e.g., stimuli-responsive block copolymer) and nanocrystals (e.g., semiconducting, magnetic, ferroelectric, etc.) with unique catalytic, magnetic, ferroelectric, optical, electronic, and optoelectronic properties.
