Abstract:Plane spiral orbital angular momentum (OAM) wave is a new form of OAM-carrying electromagnetic wave that propagates along the transverse direction. A traveling-wave circular slot antenna that can generate plane spiral OAM waves is developed and experimentally demonstrated in this letter. The antenna is excited by a 90 degrees hybrid coupler. In order to ensure that the OAM waves are propagating along the transverse plane, a ring horn is added outside the antenna. A prototype with OAM states l = +/- 3 for 10-GHz operation is fabricated and measured. The near-field phase distributions clearly indicate the azimuth phase shifting, and the radiation patterns show the characteristic of transverse propagation, respectively. The proposed antenna provides a novel approach to implement an OAM wireless communication link that has no phase singularity or divergence problem.

Abstract:Electromagnetic vortices, which describe the orbital angular momentum（OAM） carrying waves with a helical phase front, have recently attracted much interest in a radio frequency domain due to their potential applications in many diverse areas. In an OAM-based scenario, the antenna for OAM mode multiplexing/demultiplexing plays an essential role in controlling the overall system performance. In this paper, we demonstrated theoretically and experimentally an easily realized OAM antenna based on the traveling-wave circular loop structure for efficiently multiplexing/demultiplexing multiple OAM modes; in addition, its general propagation characteristics including the polarization, divergence, and radiation pattern are mathematically analyzed. Schemes for antenna size reduction and various radiation pattern manipulations have also been discussed to realize a more flexible and compact system.

Abstract:A method to generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) radio waves based on dielectric resonator antenna is demonstrated. An equivalent model is built to investigate this OAM antenna in detail. Simulation and measurement are also carried out for this antenna. Both simulated and measurement results show typical and efficient radiation of OAM-carrying radio waves. It can generate radio waves with different OAM mode numbers at different frequencies. Because of its compact structure, low cost, and small size, this antenna will be a cost-effective solution for OAM wave generation

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has become a research hotspot in radar, communication, and other fields because of its spatial spiral phase distribution in azimuthal domain. However, it encounters some problems in practical application scenarios owing to its inherent defects. Recently, several particular OAM waves and novel antenna structures have been proposed to make up for its defects or optimize its characteristics. However, there lack a universal and systematic theoretical analysis for these schemes. In this paper, the non-uniform travelling-wave current source (NTCS) model for OAM generation is proposed. This model is universal and suitable to be applied to many proposed antennas. The far field pattern and OAM spectrum distribution are theoretically derived based on the uniform travelling-wave source model. Bridged by the OAM spectrum analysis, an application-oriented antenna design process is presented. A PSOAM MG antenna optimal for the MIMO system is designed as an example. This work not only unifies the generation model of different OAM waves, but also provides a new view for the OAM based antenna design.

Abstract:A traveling-wave circular loop antenna with its phase distribution along the circle of l phi is demonstrated to generate the twisted radio wave. Theoretical formulations of its radiation fields are deduced in the cylindrical coordinate system and used to analyze its transmission characteristics, such as the radiation patterns, the evolution of the polarization states, and the angular momentum modes including the orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes and the spin angular momentum (SAM) modes. The prototype of a practical configuration for such antenna is proposed and conducted to validate the theoretical results. This theoretical analysis is applicable not only to radio waves but also to the whole electromagnetic spectrum.

Abstract:Generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams at radio frequency by the traveling-wave circular loop antenna (CLA) has been proved recently, where the analysis are based on an ideal condition. However, antenna loss is unavoidable in practice and sometimes cannot be ignored. In this paper, the radiation characteristics of different lossy traveling-wave circular antennas are studied carefully by both numerical calculation and CST simulation. Results demonstrate that the loss will affect the radiated OAM beams, including both the phase and amplitude; however, it may still work for communication when the loss is within a certain range. In addition, the performance of this lossy traveling-wave CLA can be improved by adopting multi-feed ports at the transmitting end.

Abstract:As one of the pivotal candidate technologies of 6G, orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying radio waves have attracted much attention in wireless communication and sensing technology fields owing to the particular twisted phase fronts. Various kinds of antennas have been proposed to generate this kind of wave; however, the antenna performance has not been well analyzed in terms of the OAM carrying wave’s characteristics. In this paper, some dedicated characterization parameters termed as conjugated receiving pattern, purity related bandwidth, and mode phase linearity based on well-known properties of OAM carrying electromagnetic waves are proposed for the first time. These parameters can be used to characterize the performance of OAM antennas. As an example, the performance of a fabricated helical OAM antenna with a wide bandwidth is characterized by the proposed parameters, which proves the reasonableness and necessity of the proposed characterization parameters.

Abstract:This paper gives a feasible and simple solution of generating OAM-carrying radio beams. Eight Vivaldi antenna elements connect sequentially and fold into a hollow cylinder. The circular Vivaldi antenna array is fed with unit amplitude but with a successive phase difference from element to element. By changing the phase difference at the steps of 0, ±45°, ±90°, ±135°, and 180°, the OAM radio beam can be generated with mode numbers 0, ±1, ±2, ±3, and 4. Simulations show that the OAM states of ±2 and ±3 are the same as the traditional states, while the OAM states of 0, ±1, and 4 differ at the boresight. This phenomenon can be explained by the radiation pattern difference between Vivaldi antenna and tripole antenna. A solution of distinguishing OAM states is also proposed. The mode number of OAM can be distinguished with only 2 receivers.

Abstract:A novel traveling-wave circular slot antenna based on ring resonant cavity is proposed to generate orbital angular momentum beams at millimeter-wave frequency. To converge its radiation, a ring focus parabolic reflector is cleverly designed. All the antenna components are fabricated by 3D-print technique and the electro-less copper plating surface treatment process. The near-field and the far-field are measured with a 3D platform with open-end waveguide and a rotate platform with a standard antenna. 60GHz millimeter waves carrying OMA states of l=±3 are obtained. The experimental results show that the antenna achieves proper performances with low reflection within the bandwidth and main lobe direction of less than 7°.

Abstract: A partial slotted curved waveguide leaky-wave antenna which can generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-groups (MG) with high equivalent OAM order negative and positive 40 at 60 GHz is proposed in this paper. The proposed antenna with partial slotting is designed according to the circular traveling-wave antenna which can generate single conventional OAM wave, so it can be regarded as partial arc transmitting (PAT) scheme compared with the full 2pi aperture slotting of the circular traveling-wave antenna. The full-wave simulation results show that the generated OAM MGs present a high gain beam with a helical phase distribution. This method may lead to novel applications for next generation communication and radar system.

Abstract:Based on metallic traveling-wave ring-slot structure, an easily realized four-orbital angular momentum (OAM)-mode antenna capable of generating four coaxially propagating waves with OAM modes of l = -3, -2, + 2, and + 3, respectively, is experimentally demonstrated at 10 GHz. The feeding network is simply implemented using two 90. hybrid couplers. A ring-focus double-reflector with a favorable focus-diameter-ratio is specially designed to gain a high directivity. The main characteristics of the antenna-such as S-parameters, directivity, and near-field radiation-are presented both in simulation and experiment. Employing a pair of four-OAM-mode antennas, the experiment shows that the near-field OAM-based radio communication channels are naturally isolated.
Orbital Angular Momentum Generation Using A Bi-Layered Complementary Metasurface with A High Conversion Efficiency

Abstract:Summary form only given. A bi-layered complementary metasurface composed of subwavelength scatterers are proposed for orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation at microwave frequencies. It converts a circularly polarized plane wave to a transmitted helical wave carrying the OAM of desired orders with a conversion efficiency of 75%. Our design has low profile and is easy to fabricate, considering the unit cell size, substrate thickness and number of printed-circuit-board layers. By mathematical derivation, we conclude that if the co-transmission coefficients of a scatterer in the Carteisian basis satisfying T xx = -T yy while the cross-transmission coefficients are zero, an OAM of arbitrary orders can be introduced in the transmitted waves by rotating the scatterers. In the design process, we use an equivalent circuit model to describe the behaviour of the proposed scatterer. The fundamental resonance of the scatterer is considered and examined. Simulation results based on circuit model and full-wave simulation show a good agreement with each other. For the whole metasurface simulation, usually, it is very time consuming due to the complicated fine structure and large simulation domain. Therefore, according to equivalence principle, we replace the complementary scatterers by equivalent magnetic dipole sources. We calculate the electromagnetic response from the equivalent sources with the help of the magnetic dyadic Green's function. The theoretical model largely reduces the simulation time and facilitates a fast and simple engineering realization. Finally, full-wave simulations are done to validate the proposed model. Two metasurfaces that can generate OAM of order 2 and 4 based on the proposed model are simulated. Both the near- and far-field patterns are explored and characteristics of OAM are confirmed.

Abstract:A circular wire loop antenna with the phase distribution along the circle of exp(−jlϕ) is demonstrated to generate the orbital angular momentum (OAM). Theoretical formulation of the electromagnetic field is deduced and used to calculate the angular momentum mode including the OAM mode and the spin angular momentum (SAM) mode for these electromagnetic waves. The evolution and distribution of the OAM mode and SAM mode during the transmission is also proposed. The calculated results verify the feasibility of generation the OAM-carrying waves by the circular wire loop antenna.
UCA-based Orbital Angular Momentum Radio Beam Generation and Reception under Different Array Configurations

Abstract:The Orbital-Angular-Momentum (OAM)-carrying radio waves may provide extra rotational degree of freedom, which may potentially increase channel capacity and spectrum efficiency for future wireless communications. It has been demonstrated that circular antenna array could radiate OAM-carrying radio beam by feeding each element with certain phase offset. In this paper, by proper analyses and extensive simulations on the spatial amplitude and phase characteristics of the radiated electromagnetic field under three different array configurations, i.e., radial array, tangential array, and uniform circular array (UCA), respectively. We found that among the above settings UCA is the best way to generate the desired OAM-carrying beam with linear excitation. We then use multiple concentric antenna rings with elements of half-wave dipoles to generate and demultiplex multiple OAM states, and both spectral analyses and simulations verified the feasibility.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has recently attracted extensive attention in the radio frequency domain due to its potential applications in various areas. In the OAM-based communication system, the development of the OAM-generating antennas lies at the heart of the matter to generate and receive vortex beams. In this work, a multiplexing/demultiplexing millimeter-wave OAM antenna based on the traveling-wave circular loop structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The feeding networks are implemented using waveguide ports which are inherent integration in millimeter wave communication systems. A prototype with OAM states l = ±3 carried by the z polarization and l = ±2 for the x and y polarizations at 60 GHz is fabricated and measured. Measured near-field distributions and far-field radiation patterns show excellent agreement with the simulated ones. Furthermore, based on the designer strategy, four coaxially propagating waves with OAM modes l = ±3 and ±5 for the z polarization component and l = ±2 and ±4 for the x, y polarization components are investigated, respectively. The antenna will have a positive effect on the application potential of OAM-based wireless communication.

Abstract:A partial slotted curved waveguide leaky-wave antenna which can directly generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-groups (MG) with high equivalent OAM order l e = ±40 at 60 GHz is proposed in this letter. This partial arc slotted antenna is designed based on the circular traveling-wave antenna which can generate a single mode conventional OAM wave, so it can be termed as a partial arc transmitting (PAT) scheme compared with the full 2π aperture slotting of the circular traveling-wave antenna. The full-wave simulation results show that the generated OAM MGs present a high gain beam with a helical phase distribution. Thus it can be used in a MG based line-of-sight (LoS) multiple-in-multiple-out system (MG-MIMO), whose performance is numerically analyzed. These MGs can improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and decrease the spatial correlation of sub-channels, thereby the MG-MIMO has a better performance in terms of capacity or BER than conventional MIMO.

Abstract:Communications using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of radio waves have attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, a novel millimeter-wave dual OAM mode antenna is cleverly designed, using which a 60 GHz wireless communication link with two separate OAM channels is experimentally demonstrated. The main body of the dual OAM antenna is a traveling-wave ring resonator using two feeding ports fed by a 90° hybrid coupler. A parabolic reflector is used to focus the beams. All the antenna components are fabricated by 3D printing technique and the electro-less copper plating surface treatment process. The performances of the antenna, such as S-parameters, near-fields, directivity, and isolation between the two OAM modes are measured. Experimental results show that this antenna can radiate two coaxially propagating OAM modes beams simultaneously. The multiplexing and de-multiplexing are easily realized in the antennas themselves. The two OAM mode channels have good isolation of more than 20 dB, thus ensuring the reliable transmission links at the same time.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has become a research hotspot in radar, communication, and other fields because of its spatial spiral phase distribution in the azimuthal domain. The non-uniform travelling-wave current source (NTCS) model is a universal and systematic theoretical analysis for OAM generation. However, it is limited to two-dimensional distributed circle sources. In this paper, the NTCS model is generalized to the three-dimensional sphere. The far field distribution and OAM spectrum are theoretically derived. The proposed model is applicable to the analysis of many existing spherical antennas and the design of the expected OAM mode group (MG). As a case, a dual-mode dual-polarization OAM MG antenna modified from a Cassegrain structure is designed based on the proposed model. The simulated results show that the antenna generates four OAM MGs with high beam gains, equivalent OAM orders, and cross-polarization suppression.
Theoretical Analysis on Generating Composite-Orbital Angular Momentum Beam

Abstract:For orbital angular momentum (OAM) based practical applications in radio frequency, inherent puzzles of traditional OAM carrying waves will be encountered inevitably, such as the inherent dark zone in the beam center and severe beam divergence. To solve the problem, some specific beams, which are directional beams with high gain, retaining the vorticity and orthogonality of conventional OAM carrying beams have been put forward. They are termed as composite-orbital angular momentum (c-OAM) beam for the first time in this paper. Continuous arc source model (CASM) and discrete arc source model (DASM) are proposed to generate c-OAM beams, which are composed of several OAM waves with different weights. Mathematical models of CASM and DASM are demonstrated, and the field expressions are derived. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the characteristics of the c-OAM beams, including directivity, vorticity, orthogonality, etc., and certify the validity of the proposed model. In all, CASM and DASM are capable of generating c-OAM beams, which are more suitable for OAM property based practical applications. Since beamforming is one of the key technologies in 5G systems, c-OAM beams are beneficial to be applied in current communication systems.

Abstract:Reflective metasurfaces have been widely explored for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by vortex beams. However, the most OAM generators have narrow bandwidth or major for circular polarization waves, which are caused by the propagation phase and Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase. In this letter, by combining the propagation phase and reflection polarization conversion metasurface, a novel OAM generator operating at microwave band is proposed, which is based on a low $Q$ -factor C-shaped element. A proof-of-concept prototype is fabricated and measured. This generator not only covers a broad bandwidth from 12 to 18 GHz (40%) but can also be used for dual-linear and dual-circular polarized waves.
