Abstract:Theoretical studies on anthracene and a series of its derivatives were performed using the AM I method and DFT. Based on B3LYP/6-31G(d) optimized geometries, the electronic, IR and NMR spectra of anthracene oligomers were calculated,using the Indo/Cis, AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G(d) methods, respectively. The energy gaps of the oligomers decreased and the main absorptions in the electronic spectra of the oligomers were red-shifted, whereas the IR frequencies for some of the C=C and C-H bonds were blue-shifted with increasing chain length and in the presence of substituents. The C-13-NMR chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms were upfield shifted in the presence of an electron-donating group, while the chemical shifts of the carbon atoms on the two side rings of the anthracene moiety shifted downfield in the presence of an electron-withdrawing group.

Abstract:Eighteen possible isomers Of C-78(CH2)(2) were investigated by the R 1)0 method. It was indicated that the most stable isomer was 42,43,62,63-C-78(CH2)(2), where the -CH2 groups were added to the 6/6 bonds located at the same hexagon passed by the longest axis of C-78 (C-2v), to form cyclopropane structures. Based on the most stable four geometries of C-78(CH2)(2) optimized at B3LYP/3-21G level, the first absorptions in the electronic spectra calculated with the INDO/CIS method and the IR frequencies of the C--C bonds on the carbon cage computed using the AM I method were blue-shifted compared with those of C-78 (C-2v) because of the bigger LUMO-HOMO energy gap and the less conjugated carbon cage after the addition. The chemical shifts of C-13 NMR for the carbon atoms on the added bonds calculated at B3LYP/3-21G level were moved upfield thanks to the conversion from sp(2)-C to SP3-C.

Abstract:The electronic structures and stabilities of the nine possible isomers of C80CH2 based on C 80(D-5d) were studied using density function theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G level. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectra, IR and C-13 NMR spectra of the isomers of C80CH2 were calculated using INDO/CIS, PM3 and B3LYP/6-31G methods, respectively. The most stable geometry of C80CH2 is predicted to be 27,28-C80CH2(A) with an annulene structure, where the additive bond is 6/6 bond near the equatorial belt of C-80(D-5d). Compared with those of C-80(D-5d), the first absorptions in the electronic spectra and main absorptions in the IR spectra of the stable C80CH2 isomers are red-shifted. The C-13 chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms in the cyclopropane structures in comparison with those in the annulene structures are changed upfield. The aromaticities are better maintained in the annulene structures than cyclopropane structures according to the NICS values of C80CH2 at B3LYP/6-31G level.

Abstract:Thearetical studies on a series of oligobenzothiophenes were carried out with the AMI and DFT methods. Based on B3LYP/6-31G(D) optimized geometries, the electronic spectra, IR spectra and NMR spectra of the oligomers were calculated by INDO/CIS, AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G(D) methods, respectively. The energy gaps decrease, and the absorption in electronic spectra exhibits a red-shift as polymerization increases. The IR frequencies are little affected by the polymerization and substituents. The C-13 chemical shifts are changed to be upfield since the electron-donating groups increase the electron density of carbon atoms but remain unchanged with the increase of polymerization.

Abstract:Twenty-tow possible isomers for C76BN were studied by INDO methods. The two most stable geometries are 52,53-C76BN and 29,28-C76BN, in which boron and nitrogen atoms are connected with each other and located at the 6/6 bond near the longest axis of C-78(C2v). Electronic spectra of C76BN were investigated with INDO/SCI method. UV absorptions of C76BN are red-shifted compared with those of C-78(C2v). The structures and IR spectra for the four stable isomers of C76BN were calculated by AM1 method. It was indicated that the substitution of the BN unit weakens the conjugation of carbon atoms, leading to the decrease of IR frequencies.

Abstract:The semi-empirical AM1 and INDO/CIS methods as well as density function theory were used to study equilibrium geometries and spectroscopic properties of the possible isomers of C78O5 based on C2v-C78. The most stable geometry of C78O5 is 28,29,30,31,52,53,70,71,73,78-C78O5(A) with one annulene-like structure and four epoxide structures. Compared with that of C2v-C78, the blue-shift in the electronic absorption spectra of C78O5 isomers is predicted. The reason for the blue-shift effect is discussed and the electronic transitions are assigned. The IR and NMR spectra of C78O5 are explored with the AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G methods based on the B3LYP/6-31G optimized geometries.

Abstract:Intermediate neglect of differential overlap(INDO) calculations were used to study two isomers of C64H6: one of C2v symmetry and the other of Cs symmetry. The symmetry of C64H6 was discussed and related to 13C NMR results. The calculated electronic spectrum for C64H6(C2v) is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:Heteroaromatic species are commonly found in complex gaseous mixtures, from tobacco smoke to petroleum and asphaltene combustion products. At high temperatures, C-H bond rupture produces various dehydro radical isomers. We have used the spin-flip formulation of equation-of-motion coupled cluster theory with single and double substitutions (EOM-SF-CCSD) to characterize the energies and wave functions of the lowest lying singlet and triplet states of the diradical (2,3), (2,4), (2,5), and (3,4) di-dehydro isomers of pyrrole, furan, and thiophene. In all cases, these diradicals are minima on the broken-symmetry ωB97X-D/cc-pVDZ potential energy surface. In most cases, the diradical geometries distort to enhance through-space or through-bond coupling in the singlet states and to avoid Coulombic or exchange repulsion in the triplet states. EOM-SF-CCSD results indicate that all diradical isomers are two-configurational, closed shell singlet states. The only exceptions to this are for (2,3) and (2,4) thiophene and (2,3) pyrrole, which each contain more than two configurations. In all cases, the leading term in the multiconfigurational diradical wave function doubly occupies the symmetric radical σ orbital, indicative of either through-space or 1,3 through-bond coupling. We utilized the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) approach to qualitatively assess aromaticity and find that this property varies and may be related to the energetic splittings in these diradical isomers.

Abstract:The spectroscopic parameters and anharmonic force fields of three isomers (c-H2C3O, HCCCHO and CH2CCO) of C3H2O have been calculated by Density Functional Theory (B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, wB97XD) and second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) combining with 6-311++G (3df, 3pd) and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. The equilibrium geometries, energies, rotational constants, harmonic and fundamental frequencies, and centrifugal distortion constants of three isomers of C3H2O are calculated and compared with the existed results. The anharmonic constants, vibration-rotation interaction constants, Coriolis coupling constants and force constants of three isomers of C3H2O are firstly predicted. The ingredients of complex vibration modes, and infrared spectral characteristics of three isomers as well as the relationship between structure and spectroscopic properties are detailedly discussed.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized five anthracene derivatives using quinoa perch ether and 2-acetaldehyde pyridine or 4-acetaldehyde pyridine as raw material. Five compounds are 2-(9,10- dihydro-2,3,6,7-tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-2-yl) anthracen-9- yl)pyridine (1), 2-(2,3,6, 7-tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (2), 4-(9,10-dihydro-2,3,6,7 -tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-4-yl) anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (3), 4-(2,3,6,7-tetramethoxy- 10-(pyridin-4-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (4), and 4-(2,3,6,7- tetramethoxy-10-(pyridine-4-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine nitrate (5), respectively. Their single crystals were obtained and determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, and their Hirshfeld surface analysis has also been done. Different compounds with different structures can be obtained from the same raw material by changing the reaction conditions and the concentration of acid. Their fluorescence properties also changed greatly. Structural analysis showed that compounds (1) and (3) were chiral compounds. Both C9, C18 in compound (1) and C6, C15 in compound (3) are chiral carbon atoms. However, when compounds (1) and (3) lose their two protons and become compounds (2) and (4), respectively, which can form an π-conjugated system, there are no chiral carbon atoms and have fluorescence. It lays a foundation for the potential applications of these compounds in the future.

Abstract:Crystal structure analysis and DFT computational calculation of two symmetrical and unsymmetrical decahydroacridine-1,8-diones (DHACs) were carried out to elucidate the effect of the aryl-substituted heterocyclic core in these compounds on the comparative bond lengths, bond, and dihedral angles. According to these findings, the central heterocyclic ring in these compounds is exhibited in the pseudo-boat conformation, in which the aryl substitution occupies the pseudo-axial position. Moreover, the fused outer rings were in the twisted half-chair conformation. The weak and strong inter- and intramolecular interactions between the suitable donor–acceptor positions (N‒H···O, C‒H···O, H‒N···H and C‒H···π of the C=C double bond) in symmetrical and enantiomeric pairs of unsymmetrical DHACs affect the orientation of the molecules in the crystal packing. The relative contributions of various intermolecular interactions in these compounds are evaluated using Hirshfeld surface analysis. The DFT calculations were performed to outline the optimized structure, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), natural bond orbital (NBO) and to elucidate the effect of the space orientation of the attached aryl ring toward the heterocyclic ring on the total energy content of DHAC 2 . Additionally, MEP analysis in DHAC 2 revealed that the negative electrostatic potential is more concentrated around the O 1 -atom of the C 1 =O 1 double bond than the O 2 -atom of the C 13 =O 2 double bond. The results of the NBO analysis demonstrated that in the crystal packing of compounds 1 and 2 the strongest intermolecular interaction occurs from the LP(2)O 2 to σ*(N 1 –H) and LP(1)O 1 to σ*(N 1 ‒H), respectively.

Abstract:By using ab initio methods of all-electron or effective core potential calculations, the electronic structures and the possible aromaticity of some 10π-electron systems, C6H64− (1), N64− (2), P64− (3), S62− (4), Te62− (5) and S3N3− (6), have been studied at the SCF levels using 4-31G//4-31G and 6-31G∗//6-31G∗ basis sets. The bonding characteristics of these systems are analysed in terms of the canonical molecular orbital and the Foster-Boys localized molecular orbital results. The application of the second-order Jahn-Teller theorem to the stability of these diamagnetical planar species is presented.
Dicyclopenta[4,3,2,1‐cde:4',3',2',1'‐pqr]‐peri‐tetracene: Synthesis and An Example of Annulene‐Within‐An‐Annulene Aromaticity in Different Redox States

Abstract:We report a robust strategy for tuning the electronic structure and chemical stability of π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs). By fusing two cyclopentadienyl rings in the peri-tetracene bay regions, we introduce antiaromatic character into the π-system, leading to unique photophysical and electronic properties. A stable mesityl-substituted dicyclopenta-peri-tetracene derivative was synthesized through stepwise formylation/intramolecular cyclization at the bay regions of the dihydro peri-tetracene precursor, followed by oxidative dehydrogenation. This compound features an open-shell singlet diradical ground state, global antiaromaticity, exceptional stability under ambient conditions, and amphoteric redox behavior with a small energy gap. Its dication also possesses an open-shell singlet ground state, and its structure was identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, revealing a unique [14]annulene-within-[22]annulene global aromatic structure. In contrast, the dianion exhibits a closed-shell singlet ground state. This work provides valuable insights for designing and synthesizing novel open-shell PHs with tunable electronic structures and remarkable stability.

A Computational Study of the Relative Aromaticity of Pyrrole, Furan, Thiophene and Selenophene, and Their Diels-Alder Stereoselectivity

Abstract:The collinearity of terminal p orbitals of a diene with that of a dienophile is required for an effective overlap to result in s bond formation during the Diels-Alder reaction. The ease of the DA reaction of a cyclic diene with a given dienophile, therefore, must also depend on the distance between the termini of the diene. A distance larger than the unsaturated bond of the dienophile is expected to raise the energy of activation. This scenario has been amply demonstrated from the study of reactions of several dienes, some designed to serve the purpose, with different dienophiles. The five-ring heterocycles pyrrole, furan, thiophene and selenophene possess varying aromatic character for the varied resonance participation of the heteroatom lone pair with ring p bonds. The aromaticity decreases in the same order due to: (a) the increasing s C-X (X = heteroatom) bond length lifts the bond uniformity required for ring current, hence aromaticity, such as in benzene and (b) size-mismatch of the interacting lone pair orbital and the ring p orbitals, especially in thiophene and selenophene, both allowing poor overlap in the ground state structures. It is demonstrated that increase alone in the activation energies of the DA reactions of pyrrole, furan, thiophene and selenophene cannot be considered a measure of relative aromaticity as often done and even theoretically attempted in many ways to prove just that. The separation of the termini of the diene has a much larger role in the determination of activation energy, especially in thiophene and selenophene, than their aromaticity profile. There cannot be a measure better than the relative intensity of heteroatom lone pair overlap with ring p bonds, giving rise to a six-electron like system in following Hückel’s 4n+2 rule, to assess the relative aromaticity.
Theoretical study of the structure and torsional potential of substituted biphenylenes and their fluorene derivatives

Abstract:Conformational analysis was carried out on the methyl and methoxy substituted biphenyls as well as their fluorene derivatives by ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF), second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) and density functional theory (DFT) methods using the 6-31G* basis set. Both MP2 and B3LYP increase the relative height of the perpendicular energy barriers by electron correlation corrections to the self-consistent field torsional potentials of methyl and methoxy substituted biphenyls. All three methods predict the enhancement of the conjugation effects when going from biphenyls to the corresponding fluorene derivatives. All three methods lead essentially to identical descriptions of torsion potentials, with the MP2 results closer to the HF results. The theoretical results can be well correlated to the shifts in maximum absorption wavelength of related polymers.

Abstract:Abstract We report a facile synthesis of diindeno‐fused dibenzo[a,h]anthracene derivatives ( DIDBA‐2Cl , DIDBA‐2Ph , and DIDBA‐2H) with different degrees of non‐planarity using three substituents (chloro, phenyl, and hydrogen) of various sizes. The planarization of their cores, as evidenced by the decreased end‐to‐end torsional angles, was confirmed by X‐ray crystallography. Their enhanced energy gaps with twisting were investigated by a combination of spectroscopic and electrochemical methods with density functional theory, which showed a transition from singlet open‐shell to closed‐shell configuration. Moreover, their doubly reduced states, DIDBA‐2Ph 2− and DIDBA‐2H 2− , were achieved by chemical reduction. The structures of dianions were identified by X‐ray crystallographic analysis, which elucidated that the electron charging further distorted the backbones. The electronic structure of the dianions was demonstrated by experimental and theoretical approaches, suggesting decreased energy gaps with larger non‐planarity, different from the neutral species.

Molecular structure and spectroscopic properties of two radicals of C4H2N: a DFT study

Abstract:Context: The cyano propargyl radical (CH2C3N and HC3HCN) is important reaction intermediate in both combustion flames and extraterrestrial environments such as cold molecular clouds and circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars. The acquisition of spectroscopic constants and anharmonic effect facilitates a more in-depth study of this radical. However, the data available in the literature do not allow the precise predictions for it in the interstellar medium. In this work, complete spectroscopic parameters as well as anharmonic constants of two radicals of C4H2N have been evaluated by different DFT methods. The calculated results show that it is reasonable to study the molecular spectroscopic properties of C4H2N by wB97XD/6-311++G theoretical level. On this basis, the sextic centrifugal distortion constants, anharmonic constants, vibration-rotation interaction constants, and so on are predicted for the study of high-precision rovibrational spectrum. In addition, the relationship between the anharmonic effect and vibration mode of CH2C3N and HC3HCN and their infrared spectroscopic characteristics are discussed. Methods: The calculation of the anharmonic force fields and spectroscopy properties was performed using B3LYP, B3PW91, CAM-B3LYP, and wB97XD methods combined with the 6-311++G and aug-ccpVTZ basis sets, respectively, by the Gaussian16 program suite. The IR spectra were performed with Multiwfn3.8.
Structure and Chiroptical Properties of Anthra[1,2‐a]anthracene‐1‐yl Dimers as New Biaryls

Abstract:Dimers of anthra[1,2‐a]anthracene‐1‐yl units and its mesityl derivative were synthesized by Ni(0)‐mediated coupling of the corresponding chloro derivatives as new biaryls. The X‐ray analysis and DFT calculations revealed that two polycyclic aromatic units with nonplanar deformations took a twisted conformation about the single bond as a chiral axis. Enantiomers of the nonsubstituted compound were resolved by chiral HPLC, and the enantiopure samples showed intense Cotton effects at 321 nm in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra and emission bands at 449 nm in the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra with dissymmetry factor of |glum| 3.6 × 10–3. The absolute stereochemistry of this biaryl was determined by the theoretical calculation of CD spectrum by the time‐dependent DFT method. The barrier to enantiomerization was determined to be 108 kJ mol–1 at 298 K. The dynamic process proceeded via a stepwise mechanism involving the helical inversion of each aromatic unit and the rotation about the biaryl axis as analyzed by the DFT calculations.

Abstract:The synthesis of diradical organic compounds has garnered significant attention due to their thermally accessible spin inversion and optoelectronic properties. Yet, preparing such stable structures with high open-shell behavior remains challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of four π-extended, fused fluorene derivatives with high diradical character, taking advantage of a molecular design where the closed-shell does not include any Clar sextet, comparatively to a maximum of 5 in the corresponding open-shell state. This led to an unusual open-shell triplet ground state with an outstanding singlet-triplet energy difference (ΔEST) of ca. 19 kcal/mol, one of the highest values reported to date for an all-carbon conjugated scaffold. Incorporation of dithiafulvene units at each end of the molecule (at the five-membered rings) furnishes extended tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs) undergoing reversible oxidations to the radical cation and diradical dication. The various pro-aromatic structures presented herein show highly localized spin density and a limited conjugation due to the confined π-electrons in the aromatic cycles, as supported by 1H NMR, UV-visible, EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.
