Abstract:Emerging photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) systems synergize the advantages of electrocatalysis (EC) and photocatalysis (PC) and are considered a green and efficient approach to CO2 conversion. However, improving the selectivity and conversion rate remains a major challenge. Strategies mimicking natural photosynthesis provide a prospective way to convert CO2 with high efficiency. Herein, several typical strategies are described for constructing biomimetic photoelectric functional interfaces; such interfaces include metal cocatalysts/semiconductors, small molecules/semiconductors, molecular catalysts/semiconductors, MOFs/semiconductors, and microorganisms/semiconductors. The biomimetic PEC interface must have enhanced CO2 adsorption capacity, preferentially activate CO2 , and have an efficient conversion ability; with these properties, it can activate CO bonds effectively and promote electron transfer and CC coupling to convert CO2 to single-carbon or multicarbon products. Interfacial electron transfer and proton coupling on the biomimetic PEC interface are also discussed to clarify the mechanism of CO2 reduction. Finally, the existing challenges and perspectives for biomimetic photoelectrocatalytic CO2 reduction are presented.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (PEC-CO2R) represents a promising approach for producing renewable fuels and chemicals using solar energy. However, attaining even modest solar-to-fuel (STF) conversion efficiency often necessitates the use of costly semiconductors and noble-metal catalysts. Herein, we present a Cu2O/Ga2O3/TiO2 photocathode modified with Sn/SnOx catalysts through a simple photoelectrodeposition method. It achieves a remarkable half-cell STF efficiency of similar to 0.31% for the CO2R in aqueous KHCO3 electrolyte, under AM 1.5 G illumination. The system enables efficient production of syngas (FE: similar to 62%, CO/H-2 approximate to 1:2) and formate (FE: similar to 38%) with a consistent selectivity over a wide potential range, from +0.34 to -0.16 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode. We ascribe the observed performance to the favorable optoelectronic characteristics of our Cu2O heterostructure and the efficient Sn/SnOx catalysts incorporated in the PEC-CO2R reactions. Through comprehensive experimental investigations, we elucidate the indispensable role of Cu2O buried p-n junctions in generating a high photovoltage (similar to 1 V) and enabling efficient bulk charge separation (up to similar to 70% efficiency). Meanwhile, we discover that the deposited Sn/SnOx catalysts have critical dual effects on the overall performance of the PEC devices, serving as active CO2R catalysts as well as the semiconductor front contact. It could facilitate interfacial electron transfer between the catalysts and the semiconductor device for CO2R by establishing a barrier-free ohmic contact.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion promises an ideal route to store solar energy into chemical bonds. However, sluggish electron kinetics and unfavorable product selectivity remain unresolved challenges. Here, an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and borate-anchored Co single atoms were separately loaded on ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets. The optimized nanocomposite photocatalyst produces CO and CH4 from CO2 and water under UV-vis light irradiation, exhibiting a 42-fold photoactivity enhancement compared with g-C3N4 and nearly 100% selectivity towards CO2 reduction. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the ionic liquid extracts electrons and facilitates CO2 reduction, whereas Co single atoms trap holes and catalyze water oxidation. More importantly, the maximum electron transfer efficiency for CO2 photoreduction, as measured with in-situ μs-transient absorption spectroscopy, is found to be 35.3%, owing to the combined effect of the ionic liquid and Co single atoms. This work offers a feasible strategy for efficiently converting CO2 to valuable chemicals.

Abstract:The massive CO2 emissions from continuous increases in fossil fuel consumption have caused disastrous environmental and ecological crises. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold the potential to convert CO2 and water into value-added chemicals and O2 to mitigate this crisis. However, their activity and selectivity are very low under conditions close to natural photosynthesis. In this work, inspired by the photosynthesis process in natural leaves, we successfully anchored atomically dispersed Fe sites into interlayers of the photoactive triazine-based COF (Fe-COF) membrane to serve as a mimic metalloenzyme for the first time. It is found that under the conditions of gas-solid and no addition of any photosensitizer and sacrificial reagent, the highly crystalline Fe-COF membrane shows a record high CO2 photoreduction performance with the CO production of 3972 μmol g-1 in a 4 h reaction, ~100% selectivity of CO, and excellent cycling stability (at least 10 cycles). In such a remarkable photocatalytic CO2 conversion, the atomically dispersed Fe sites with high catalytic activity significantly reduce the formation energy barrier of key *CO2 and *COOH intermediates, the high-density triazine moieties supply more electrons to the iron catalytic center to promote CO2 reduction, and the homogeneous COF membrane greatly improves the electron/mass transport. Thus, this work opens a new window for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts and provides new insights into their structure-activity relationship in CO2 photocatalytic reduction.

Abstract:Highlights Dual-site electrocatalysts with in situ formed metal-oxide interfaces are proposed and demonstrated to enhance the formation of multi-carbon products from electrochemical CO 2 reduction. The 0.5-UiO/Cu delivers a high C2+ Faradaic efficiency of over 74% with notably boosted formation rate and durability, surpassing most reported electrocatalysts. A unique mechanism of UiO-66 to induce in situ reconstruction of Cu surface and formation of UiO-66-derived amorphous ZrO x /Cu interface is uncovered, which improves the selectivity and productivity toward C2+ products.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into valuable chemical fuels is considered as a prospective way to solve the energy crisis and environmental problems. Photoelectrocatalysis can integrate the merits of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis to lower energy consumption and improve the catalytic efficiency. In this work, a photoanode-driven photoelectrocatalysis system was prepared with TiO2 nanotubes photoanode and Bi2Se3-Bi2O3 nanocomposite electrocathode for CO2 reduction. The electrocatalytic test results demonstrated that Bi2Se3-Bi2O3-3 cathode exhibited excellent CO2 electroreduction performance with the formate Faraday efficiency of 81.33 % at −0.9 V vs RHE and an overpotential as low as 500 mV. In the photoanode-driven photoelectrocatalysis system, the formate yield was 1.6 times higher than that in the electrocatalytic system at −1.0 V vs RHE. The increased catalytic performance in the photoelectrocatalysis system may be due to the synergistic effect between photocatalysis and electrocatalysis caused by the photoanode. This work provides a reference for developing efficient CO2 reduction approaches and high-performance electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The efficient fixation of excess CO2 from the atmosphere to yield value-added chemicals remains crucial in response to the increasing levels of carbon emission. Coupling enzymatic reactions with electrochemical regeneration of cofactors is a promising technique for fixing CO2 , while producing biomass which can be further transformed into biofuels. Herein, a bioelectrocatalytic system was established by depositing crystallites of a mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF), termed NU-1006, containing formate dehydrogenase, on a fluorine-doped tin oxide glass electrode modified with Cp*Rh(2,2'-bipyridyl-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid)Cl2 complex. This system converts CO2 into formic acid at a rate of 79±3.4 mm h-1 with electrochemical regeneration of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide cofactor. The MOF-enzyme composite exhibited significantly higher catalyst stability when subjected to non-native conditions compared to the free enzyme, doubling the formic acid yield.

Abstract:(Photo)Electrochemical CO2 transformation to produce valuable chemicals or biofuels is one of the essential technologies for the carbon-neutral economy to store clean and renewable energy in chemical bonds. Herein, we show an efficient photocatalytic assembly formed by coupling formate dehydrogenase from Clostridium ljungdahliia (ClFDH), silver nanoclusters (AgNCs), TiO2, and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The resulting integrated system is stable and can convert CO2 into formate with a turnover frequency of 1 s-1 and a turnover number of over 10,000 in 4 h. We highlight the key roles AgNCs have played to achieve such durability and high efficiency, which include (1) increasing the overall loading of biocatalysts and optimizing the orientation of enzyme molecules upon semiconductors by the Ag-cysteine interaction; (2) as the electron mediator, facilitating the interfacial electron transfer; and (3) scavenging the enzyme-deactivating reactive oxygen species. Our results provide a paradigm of selective CO2- capturing reaction under ambient conditions.
Photoelectrocatalytic CO2 Reduction to Formate Using a BiVO4/ZIF-8 Heterojunction

Abstract:Converting CO2 into high-value chemical fuels through green photoelectrocatalytic reaction path is considered as a potential strategy to solve energy and environmental problems. In this work, BiVO4/ZIF-8 heterojunctions are prepared by in-situ synthesis of ZIF-8 nanocrystals with unique pore structure on the surface of BiVO4. The experimental results show that the silkworm pupa-like BiVO4 is successfully combined with porous ZIF-8, and the introduction of ZIF-8 can provide more sites for CO2 capture. The optimal composite ratio of 4:1-BiVO4/ZIF-8 showed excellent CO2 reduction activity and the lowest electrochemical transport resistance. In the electrocatalytic system, 4:1-BiVO4/ZIF-8 exhibits formate Faraday efficiency of 82.60% at -1.0 V vs. RHE. Furthermore, the Faraday efficiency increases to 91.24% at - 0.9 V vs. RHE in the photoelectrocatalytic system, which is 10.8 times that of pristine BiVO4. The results show that photoelectric synergism can not only reduce energy consumption, but also improve the Faraday efficiency of formate. In addition, the current density did not decrease during 34 h electrolysis, showing long-term stability. This work highlights the importance of the construction of heterojunction to improve the performance of photoelectrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into fuels via photoreduction is a promising method to reduce environmental pollution and alleviate the energy crisis. Herein, we report iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) that can host a photosensitizer Ru(dcbpy)(3)Cl-2 (PS) to form a range of photocatalytic systems, PS-Fe-MOFs, that are capable of increasing the activity of CO2 conversion. Among the four Fe-MOFs and PS composites, PSMIL-101(Fe) showed the highest activity for photocatalytic CO2 reduction under simulated visible light irradiation (yielding CO and CH4 at 116.7 and 79.1 mu mol.g(-1) within 5 h, respectively), approximately 13 times higher than that of pristine MIL-101(Fe). In situ FTIR spectra and theoretical calculations further elucidated the coexistence of CO and CH4 as the products of CO2 reduction by PSMIL-101(Fe). Additionally, the optical and electrochemical experiments, alongside theoretical calculations, indicated that PS bound on the surface of the Fe-MOFs provided a greater charge transfer efficiency, thus leading to a high photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity.

Abstract:Enzymatic CO 2 conversion by photocatalysis that mimicking natural photosystem offers an eco-friendly method for transforming CO2 into valuable chemicals or fuels at low-cost. However, the primary challenge in artificially enzymatic conversion arises from the high energy loss caused by low electron transfer efficiency and the instability of enzymes due to the incompatibility between enzyme catalysts and photocatalysts. Integrating natural enzymes, photoharvesting component and electron mediators to build a semiartificial photosynthetic cell surpasses the natural photosynthetic system in terms of simplicity, directed charge transfer, altered enzyme conformation and light utilization efficiency. Herein, a semiartificial cell is constructed by co-assembly of photoantennas and enzymes on stacked nanorods within microspheres. The microspheres, formed through L-Cystine self-assembly with excellent biocompatibility, facilitates the alteration of FDH to a conformation with an open active site cleft, exposing more active sites. The electron mediator (1-ethylamino-4,4'-bipyridine) is connected to meso-Tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin via an amide bond to enhance electron transport efficiency. By leveraging these attributes, formate production reaches 1.24 mmol•g -1 cat , and the semiartificial cell exhibit long-term durability.

Herein, we report selective CO2/HCO2- electrochemical interconversion by exploiting the flexible coordination modes and rich redox properties of a versatile iron-thiolate platform, Cp*Fe(II)L (L = 1,2-Ph2PC6H4S-). Upon oxidation, this iron complex undergoes formate binding to generate a diferric formate complex, [(L-)2Fe(III)(μ-HCO2)Fe(III)]+, which exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic performance for the HCO2--to-CO2 transformation with a maximum turnover frequency (TOFmax) ∼103 s-1 and a Faraday efficiency (FE) ∼92(±4)%. Conversely, this iron system also allows for reduction at -1.85 V (vs Fc+/0) and exhibits an impressive FE ∼93 (±3)% for the CO2-to-HCO2- conversion. Mechanism studies revealed that the HCO2--to-CO2 electrocatalysis passes through dicationic [(L2)-•Fe(III)(μ-HCO2)Fe(III)]2+ generated by unconventional oxidation of the diferric formate species taking place at ligand L, while the CO2-to-HCO2- reduction involves a critical intermediate of [Fe(II)-H]- that was independently synthesized and structurally characterized.
