Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was incorporated into composite nanofiltration membranes in situ by adding different amounts of PVA into piperazine (PIP) during its interfacial polymerization with trimesoyl chloride (TMC). Effect of PVA on membrane structures, nanofiltration performances and anti-fouling properties was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and cross-flow membrane module. It was found that the flux was increased without sacrificing rejection after adding PVA. XPS results show that the active layer contains PVA and polyamide components. AFM and SEM show that the roughness of these membranes decreases proportionally with increasing the mass fraction of PVA to PIP (the root mean square roughness value (RMS) decreases from 110.7nm to 41.6nm after adding 16% PVA). The hydrophilicity and flux of the composite NF membranes also increase with increasing the mass fraction of PVA to PIP. Moreover, the anti-fouling performance of composite polyamide NF membranes is improved with introducing the PVA into membranes. Therefore, PVA as an additive reagent has the potential to improve the nanofiltration performance of polyamide composite membranes.
Hydrophilic Modified Polydopamine Tailored Heterogeneous Polyamide in Thin-Film Nanocomposite Membranes for Enhanced Separation Performance and Anti-Fouling Properties

Abstract:To meet the larger-scale freshwater demand, it is necessary to develop advanced thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes with favorable separation performance and anti-fouling capacity. In this study, hydrophilic modified polydopamine nanoparticles (PDNPs) were synthesized by the co-polymerization of alkaline L-Arginine (Arg) with dopamine (DA). Subsequently, they were incorporated into the polyamide (PA) layer via in-situ interfacial polymerization (IP) to fabricate TFN membranes. The effect of different PDNPs loadings on the overall mem-brane physicochemical properties and performance was studied. The incorporation of PDNPs strengthened a heterogeneous network structure of the PA layer, with a denser front surface and loose interior structure. Compared to TFC-0 membranes, the optimal TFN-PDNPs-2 membranes demonstrated a water permanence of 4.33 L center dot m(-2)center dot h(-1)center dot bar(-1) (increased by 71.7%), a NaCl rejection of 98.4%, and an ultrahigh antibiotics (TCH) rejection of 99.9%. In addition, TFN membranes showed good stability under various conditions and enhanced anti-fouling properties. This work provides a useful guideline for designing advanced membranes for a wide range of water treatment applications.
Improving the Performance of Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane by Incorporation of Modified Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Polyamide reverse osmosis membranes incorporating carboxy-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by interfacial polymerization of metaphenylene diamine and trimesoyl chloride. The pristine MWNTs were pre-treated with mixed acids before being modified with diisobutyryl peroxide to enhance their dispersity and chemical activity. The prepared nanocomposite membranes had a 100–300nm skin layer and the modified MWNTs were embedded within the skin layer, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The surface of the nanocomposite membrane was shown to be more negatively charged than bare polyamide membrane. It was shown that with an increase in the carbon nanotube loading in the membrane, the membrane morphology changed distinctly, leading to a significantly improved flux without sacrificing the solute rejection. Meanwhile, the nanocomposite membranes showed better antifouling and antioxidative properties than MWNT-free polyamide membranes, suggesting that the incorporation of modified MWNTs in membranes is effective for improving the membrane performance.
Aminated Substrate Based Thin Film Composite Nanofiltration Membrane with High Separation Performance by Chemically Inhibiting the Intrusion of Polyamide

Abstract:In this study, aminated PES substrates were prepared and applied for the investigation on the interfacial polymerization of piperazine (PIP) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC) thereon, with relatively low (PIP: 0.1 wt%, TMC: 0.01 wt%) and high (PIP: 0.5 wt%, TMC: 0.05 wt%) monomer concentration. In low concentration condition, thin, dense, and defect-free selective layers were synthesized on the aminated substrates. In high concentration condition, thin film composite (TFC) membranes with thin selective layers and without the intrusion of polyamide into the substrates were formed. The reactions between the aminated substrate and selective layer were confirmed by XPS analysis on the back surface of the selective layer. The aminated substrates based TFC membrane (TFC-48-H) showed high separation performance, including high water permeability as 20.6 +/- 0.1 L/m(2) h bar and high Na(2)SO(4 )to NaCl selectivity as 86.7, indicating the application potential in divalent to monovalent salts separation process. A conceptual model was proposed to highlight the role of the aminated substrates in the interfacial polymerization process as (1) PIP loaders, (2) PIP diffusion hinders, and (3) polyamide intrusion chemically inhibitors in high monomer concentration condition.

Abstract:An acid resistant thin film composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane (named TPT-TMC/PSf membrane) was fabricated using interfacial polymerization. A precursor of poly(s-triazine-amine), 1,3,5-(tris-piperazine)-triazine (TPT), was synthesized and interfacially polymerized with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to fabricate NF membrane on the surface of a polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration membrane. The chemical structure, surface charge and morphology of the TPT-TMC/PSf membrane were characterized by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (ATR-FTIR), zeta potential measurement, and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The results indicated that the TPT-TMC/PSf membrane has a thinner skin layer and a smoother and more negatively charged surface than the conventional polypiperazine amide NF membrane. The newly fabricated TPT-TMC/PSf membrane exhibited excellent rejections against different aqueous salt solutions [Na2SO4 (98.6%) > MgSO4 (97.0%) > NaCl (40.5%)]. The membrane also exhibited excellent acid resistant behavior. After being immersed in the 0.05M H2SO4 aqueous solution for 720h, stable water permeance of about 8.68Lm−2h−1bar−1 and MgSO4 rejection above 94.2% still achieved.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is an urgent problem needing to be solved for practical application of nanofiltration membranes. In this study, an amphiphilic nanofiltration membrane with hydrophilic domains as well as low surface energy domains was developed, to integrate a fouling-resistant defense mechanism and a fouling-release defense mechanism. A simple and effective two-step surface modification of a polyamide NF membrane was applied. Firstly, triethanolamine (TEOA) with abundant hydrophilic functional groups was grafted to the membrane surface via reacting with the residual acyl chloride group of the nanofiltration membrane, making the nanofiltration membranes more hydrophilic; secondly, the 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS), well-known as a low surface energy material, was covalently grafted on the hydroxyl functional groups through hydrogen bonding. Filtration experiments with model foulants (bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein solution, humic acid solution (HA) and sodium alginate solution (SA)) were performed to estimate the antifouling properties of the newly developed nanofiltration membranes. As a result of surface modification proposed in this study the antifouling properties of an amphiphilic modified F-PA/PSF membrane were enhanced more than 10% compared to the PA/PSF specimen in terms of flux recovery ratio.

Abstract:In this work, a novel approach to improve the antifouling properties of membrane surfaces was developed. First, a polydopamine layer was attached onto the surface of an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/fabric composite microporous membrane based on dopamine self-polymerization and adhesive behavior. Then, methoxy polyethylene glycol amine was covalently bonded with the polydopamine layer via a Schiff base reaction. The physicochemical properties of the modified composite membrane surface were investigated, and the results indicated this modification could effectively enhance the membrane surface hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the protein fouling resistance of both dopamine-coated and methoxy polyethylene glycol amine immobilized composite membranes was evaluated. It was found that a dopamine coating cannot obviously enhance the membrane antifouling properties due to its strong bioadhesion behavior. However, the antifouling properties of the composite membranes were significantly improved after being immobilized with a methoxy polyethylene glycol amine layer. Consequently, a layer-by-layer modified composite membrane with excellent antifouling property was obtained. The pure water flux and flux recovery ratio of the resultant membrane were 764L m(-2) h(-1) and 83%, respectively. Surface modification of polypropylene microporous membrane via self-assembly and UV-crosslinking of lecithin and analysis of surface properties

Abstract:A novel approach to modification of polypropylene microporous membrane (PPMM) surface based on molecular self-assembly and UV-crosslinking was devised. First, natural amphiphilic lecithin was introduced onto the PPMM surface via self-assembly. Then, a stable biomimetic surface analogy with phospholipid layer was constructed through UV-crosslinking of lecithin, conferring the PPMM surface with good hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. The anchoring of lecithin was confirmed by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflection (FTIR/ATR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies. Water contact angle, fluorescence labeled protein (FITC-protein) adsorption, and enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) were used to evaluate hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of the membrane. Water contact angle of the PPMMs surface was significantly improved after modification, by a decrease from 130° to 30°. Moreover, the modified membranes showed lower protein adsorption. Furthermore, the self-assembly and UV-crosslinking modified membrane exhibited good stability even after multiple washing compared with the self-assembly modified one. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:High-quality thin-film composite (TFC) membranes with high selectivity and permeability have great significance owing to their practical applications, specifically for the accurate differentiation of monovalent and divalent ions. However, the trade-off effect between selectivity and permeability is still a big challenge due to the difficult structure adjustment of the selective layer. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) functionalized with a hydrophobic long alkane chain was first explored as a functional amphiphilic interlayer to synthesize high-quality TFC membranes via a confined interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. The amphiphilic interlayer not only restricted the formation of the polyamide (PA) matrix in the pores of the substrate but also accelerated spatially more homogeneous polymerization and formed a PA active layer with a more uniform pore size distribution. The method may provide an effective principle for the construction of versatile polyamide-based membranes with high perm-selectivity on various supports. The NaCl/Na2SO4 separation factor of the D-8/PA membrane reached as high as 204.07, while the flux increased up to 25.71 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. This progress provides a more feasible way for the construction of high-quality TFC membranes with a devisable and creative amphiphilic interlayer for industrial application.

Abstract:It is urgent to develop a polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) membrane with a new method in this study by designing and constructing a new nanomaterial support layer instead of the conventional support layer. Polydopamine-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes (PDA@MWCNTs) as the place of the polymerization reaction can optimize the PA film structure and performance. The resulting composite membrane presents a higher water flux of 15.8 LВ·mвҲ’2В·hвҲ’1В·barвҲ’1 and a rejection rate of 97% to Na2SO4, simultaneously maintaining this high separation performance in 300 min. It is a new ideal to construct novel support layer by using inorganic nanoparticles and organic polymer nanofiber membranes.

Abstract:This work provides a new and simple method to improve the performance of polyamide reverse osmosis membrane, including selectivity properties and antifouling ability. Herein, quaternary ammonium groups have been immobilized on polyamide membrane surface by grafting and self-polymerization reaction of epoxy group in 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride with tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol as curing catalyst. The surface properties of the modified membrane, such as surface charge, hydrophilicity and roughness have been characterized in detail and compared with virgin PA membrane. This novel modification method mainly achieves three advances in terms of membrane performance and fabricating technique. On one hand, the positively charged quaternary ammonium group immobilized on membrane surface can prevent cationic surfactant absorbing to improve fouling-resistance, due to the electric repulsion effect. On the other hand, self-polymerization reaction based on epoxy group occurred on polyamide surface can fill up the aggregate pore or reduce the pore size in polyamide, resulting in the increase of salt rejection. More importantly, the membrane modification process is very simple and efficient, which adapts to fabricate RO membrane with high performance on industrial production line completely.
Modification of PVDF membrane by post-modified NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) showing improved permeability and oil/water separation performance

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) possess excellent post-modification characteristics, high specific surface area, diversity of skeleton composition and pore tunability, have been increasingly applied in membrane modifications. In this work, NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) (NM88B) was first fixed onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by polyethyleneimine (PEI) through a vacuum-assisted self-assembly process, and the deposited NM88B was subsequently grafted with perfluoroalkyl polyethoxyacetic acid (FPEOAA) via a condensation reaction to realize the surface modifications. The modified membranes (named as N1Fx) showed improved hydrophilicity and underwater-oleophobicity. In addition, very high pure water flux (up to 9403 L‧m−2‧h−1) was obtained for the N1Fx membranes due to the high porosity of introduced NM88B. In the dead-end filtration experiments of n-hexadecane-water emulsion, the optimum membrane N1F20 showed a good oil rejection rate (98.3%) and high permeation flux (667 L‧m−2‧h−1) which is approximately seven times of the pure PVDF membrane, indicating that the surface-modified membranes had excellent permeability and good separation performance. Even after four filtration cycles of oil-water emulsion, the rejection rate maintained higher than 97%, showing good reusability. Furthermore, the study found that N1F20 had certain acid and alkaline resistance and great potential for engineering applications.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes have been widely used in manyfields owingto their high separation efficiency and low energy assumption. However,traditional substrates for thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltrationmembranes, such as polysulfone or polyethersulfone ultrafiltrationmembranes, suffer from low surface porosity and poor stability inorganic solvents. A microporous polypropylene membrane (MPPM) possesseshigh organic solvent resistance, high porosity, but poor hydrophilicity.Herein, MPPMs were surface hydrophilized for the preparation of TFCmembranes by interfacial polymerization. A green, fast, and stabledeposition system based on ferulic acid and Fe3+ was employedfor surface hydrophilization of MPPM, and thus, the aqueous solutionof piperazine can homogeneously distribute on the substrate surface,which was directly visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy.The nanofiltration membranes show rejection of 98.1% to Na2SO4 and water permeation flux of about 16 L/m(2)& BULL;h & BULL;bar. Moreover, the membranes are stable in a varietyof common organic solvents, demonstrating the potential in organicsolvent nanofiltration. The proposed strategy expands the selectionof porous substrates for interfacial polymerization and harsh applicationenvironments for nanofiltration.

Abstract:Nylon 66, which is an important membrane class used in manufacturing of chitin and chitosan, have a number of features that can be improved by surface functionalizations into a novel composite structure with support of ultrasound and silica gel (SiG) catalyst in a doubled amidation reaction. Firstly, nylon 66/para-phenylenediamine thin film composite (NP-TFC) is prepared from commercial nylon 66 membrane in an ultrasound assisted hydrolysis-amidation reaction. Secondly, carboxylic functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) are grafted on the NP fiber in an ultrasound assisted/SiG-catalyzed amidation reaction, where para-phenylenediamine (pPD) role is cross-linking. As an excellent result confirmed by either Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectrometry or scanning electron microscopic (SEM), bundled MWCNTs bridges are easily built in SiG-catalyzed ethanol media to connect nylon 66 fibers at distances of 0.3–1 μm. The vacuum filtration test confirmed that as-prepared nylon 66/pPD/MWCNTs structure has superior Ca2+ rejection efficiency to that of original nylon 66.Graphical

Abstract:Polyamide composite nanofiltration membranes prepared by interfacial polymerization have been widely used in brackish water purification, wastewater treatment and solvent recovery. However, it remains a challenge to further enhance the membrane performances by optimizing their structure due to the rapid reaction rate and poor controllability of the conventional interfacial polymerization. In this work, we report a facile strategy to fabricate polyamide composite membranes with improved nanofiltration performance by using lithium chloride as an additive in interfacial polymerization to regulate the membrane structure. The synthesized polyamide layers show a reduced harmonic amide bond density and an increased pore size from 0.51 nm to 0.59 nm, while the morphology, chemical structure, surface charge, and surface hydrophilicity remain almost unchanged under the optimal addition of lithium chloride at 1.25 gL-1. The resulting structure endows the polyamide composite membrane with a 17% enhanced water permeance, reaching up to 216 Lm(-2)h(-1)MPa-1, while maintaining a high rejection of Na2SO4 above 98.8%. In addition, nanofiltration membranes prepared demonstrate excellent performance stability when operated under various applied pressures, across a wide concentration range of feed solution, and during a 120-h long-term filtration process, indicating the potential of our membranes in practical applications.

Abstract:Antifouling properties are considered to be crucial parameter to polyamide (PA) composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes for practical applications. In this study, an antifouling material, surface zwitterionization of Metal-organic frameworks (Z-MIL-101 (Cr)) was firstly prepared by decorating zwitterionic polymer onto the MOFs surface. Subsequently, a novel type of MOFs-based hybrid membranes were fabricated via mixing the Z-MIL-101 (Cr) nanoparticle with the organic matrix by interfacial polymerization technique. The most optimal hybrid membrane had a high water permeation of 26 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , which was 2.1 times higher than that pristine PA membrane, while the retention for Na 2 SO 4 was still kept at a considerably high value of 93%. The significant increased water flue can attribute to the existence of water channels generated by the Z-MIL-101 (Cr). More important, the antifouling property of the hybrid membrane was much better than that pristine PA, which was due to the formation of superhydrophilic liquid layer surrounding the zwitterionic groups. The combination of the micropore structure of the MOFs and the excellent antifouling properties of the decorated zwitterionic polymer effectively improved separation performances and antifouling ability, which makes these hybrid membranes promising for water purification.

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) is an effective technology for removing trace organic contaminants (TrOCs), while the inherent trade-off effect between water permeance and solute rejections hinders its widespread application in water treatment. Herein, we propose a novel scheme of "monomers with sacrificial groups" to regulate the microstructure of the polyamide active layer via introducing a hydrolyzable ester group onto piperazine to control the diffusion and interfacial polymerization process. The achieved benefits include narrowing the pore size, improving the interpore connectivity, enhancing the microporosity, and reducing the active layer thickness, which collectively realized the simultaneous improvement of water permeance and enhancement of TrOCs rejection performance. The resulting membranes were superior to both the control and commercial membranes, especially in water-TrOCs selectivity. The effects of using the new monomers on the membrane physicochemical properties were systematically studied, and underlying mechanisms for the enhanced separation performance were further revealed by simulating the polymerization process through density functional theory calculation and measuring the trans-interface diffusion rate of monomers. This study demonstrates a novel promising NF membrane synthesis strategy by designing the structure of reaction monomers for achieving excellent rejection of TrOCs with a low energy input in water treatment.
Optimizing Polyamide Thin Film Composite Membrane Covalently Bonded with Modified Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Abstract:Novel modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (mMSN)/polyamide (PA) thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were prepared via interfacial polymerization of trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and piperazine (PIP). Mesoporous silica nanoparticles were functionalized with amino groups and introduced into PIP aqueous phase. Therefore, reaction between mMSN and TMC would occur during interfacial polymerization, giving rise to a covalent bonding between silica nanoparticles and active layer of TFN membrane. By adding an appropriate concentration of mMSN into aqueous phase (0.03wt%), the pure water flux of the mMSN/PA TFN membrane reaches to a maximum of 32.4L/m2h which is almost 1.5 times as high as that of TFC membrane, while the rejection to Na2SO4 of TFN membrane keeps at a relative high level (>80%). Two unique properties of mMSN were favorable for the membrane performance: mesoporous structure for water transport and functional groups for better interaction with polymer matrix. The obtained membrane exhibited a promoted anti-fouling ability as well as a good long-term stability. The effect of the mesopore structures of silica nanoparticles on the membrane performance was also investigated. Modified mesoporous silica nanopraticles with proper pore size was more suitable for the optimization of PA TFN membrane.
