Abstract:Step junctions are made from epitaxial YBCO films which are fabricated by an in situ DC magnetron sputtering process. Both DC and AC Josephson effects are observed in liquid nitrogen temperature range. The DC Josephson current is found to be linear with radiated microwave amplitude and proportional to (T(c) - T)3/2.

Abstract:Application of Josephson effect in sensors, electronic and metrological devices working at temperature of 77 K requires fabrication of efficient and reproducible high temperature superconducting (HTS) Josephson junctions. In order to enhance the performance of HTS junctions, we introduce multilayered approach to YBCO-based step-edge Josephson junction manufacture. Thin YBCO and multilayered YBCO/NdBCO/YBCO films of a similar thickness ( ~ 210 nm) were grown by a pulsed-laser deposition technique on MgO (100) substrates with artificially created step edge. Large discrepancies of Ic and Rn values were found between these two types of junction. Results of their structural and electrical properties are reported.

Abstract:Using c-axis-oriented oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7−δ film deposited across a low-angle step on a SrTiO3 substrate, we successfully demonstrated intrinsic Josephson effects. In addition to several voltage jumps of large amplitudes (a few millivolts) and remarkable hysteresis on the dc current–voltage curves, we observed upturns on the current–voltage curves under microwave irradiation which appeared at increasingly high voltages with increasing microwave power. We proposed to explain this observation in terms of high-order microwave-induced Shapiro steps.

Abstract:Superconducting step-edge junctions were fabricated on step-edges in (100) LaAlO/sub 3/ substrates by sputter-deposited epitaxial YBaCuO and TlBaCaCuO thin films. The substrate steps were patterned by ion beam etching using metal film as a mask. The transport properties of the junctions were characterized by four-probe electrical measurements. The critical current-normal resistance product (I/sub c/R/sub N/) was larger than 0.2 mV (77 K) for most of the junctions. Clear Shapiro steps were observed in the current-voltage characteristics of the junctions with 36 GHz or 95 GHz millimeter-wave irradiation. The high frequency properties of these high T/sub c/ Josephson junctions showed that they were quite suitable for the Josephson harmonic mixer used in the digital phase locked millimeter and sub-millimeter wave sources.<>

Abstract:The YBa2Cu3O7–δ (YBCO) step-edge Josephson junction on MgO substrate has recently been shown to have important applications in making advanced high-transition temperature (high-TC) superconducting devices such as high-sensitivity superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), superconducting quantum interference filter, and THz detector. In this paper, we investigate the fabrication and transport properties of YBCO step-edge junction on MgO substrate. By optimizing the two-stage ion beam etching process, steps on MgO (100) substrates are prepared with an edge angle θ of about 34°. The YBCO step-edge junctions are then fabricated by growing the YBCO thin films with a pulsed laser deposition technique and subsequent traditional photolithography. The resistive transition of the junction shows typical foot structure which is well described by the Ambegaokar-Halperin theory of thermally-activated phase slippage for overdamped Josephson junctions. The voltage-current curves with temperature dropping down to 77 K exhibit resistively shunted junction behavior, and the Josephson critical current density JC is shown to follow the \begin{document}$(T_{\rm C}-T)^2$\end{document} dependence. At 77 K, the JC of the junction reaches 1.4 × 105 A/cm2, significantly higher than the range of 103–104 A/cm2 as presented by other investigators for YBCO step-edge junctions on MgO substrate with comparable θ of 35°–45°. This indicates a rather strong Josephson coupling of the junction, and by invoking the results of YBCO bicrystal junctions showing similar values of JC, it is tentatively proposed that the presently fabricated junction might be described as an S-s′-S junction with s′ denoting the superconducting region of depressed TC in the vicinity of the step edge or as an S-N-S junction with N denoting a very thin non-superconducting layer. By incorporating the MgO-based YBCO step-edge junction, high-TC radio frequency (RF) SQUID is made. The device shows decent voltage-flux curve and magnetic flux sensitivity of 250 \begin{document}$ \text{μ}\Phi_0/{\rm Hz}^{1/2} $\end{document} at 1 kHz and 77 K, comparable to the values reported in the literature. To further improve the RF SQUID performance, efforts could be devoted to optimizing the junction parameters such as the junction JC. By using the YBCO step-edge junction on MgO substrate, high-TC direct current SQUID could also be developed, as reported recently by other investigators, to demonstrate the potential of MgO-based step-edge junction in making such a kind of device with superior magnetic flux sensitivity.

Abstract:The DC and AC Josephson effects have been observed in constricted superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O films at liquid nitrogen temperature. The temperature dependence of the critical current was studied. It was found that Ic ∝ (Tc-T)32. The induced steps were seen in the I-V characteristics when the sample was irradiated by a microwave field. Separations between steps agrees with the Josephson relation.

Abstract:Established semiconductor process technologies are demonstrated to be suitable for the fabrication of high temperature superconductor (HTS) Josephson junctions. Single YBCO bridges were modified by local oxygen ion irradiation through a narrow slit in a PMMA mask which was formed by electron beam lithography. The influence of slit dimension and irradiation dose was investigated. The critical current and normal resistance ot the modified microbridges can be controlled by these two parameters. Proximity coupling across the modified region is observed up to a slit width of 250 nm. When exposed to microwave irradiation the microbridges exhibited Shapiro steps. In dc SQUIDs a voltage modulation as a function of an applied magnetic flux is observed.

Abstract:We have fabricated the edge junction by using epitaxial multilevel deposition technique. The dc and ac Josephson effects have been observed in liquid nitrogen temperatures. The current-voltage characteristics of the junction are nonhysteretic and have well-defined critical current. The dynamic resistances above the critical current are large and independent of bias current. The dependence of height of the microwave induced steps on the microwave power consists with the prediction of the resistively-shunted-junction model with dc and radio-frequency current bias.

Abstract:Using the screen printing method, YBaCuO high T c superconducting films were fabricated. The thickness of the films was ≃30 µm and maximum grain size was ≃70 µm. T czero=90.7 K and J c=20 A/cm2 at 77 K were obtained. With a razor edge, the films were cut and formed to grain boundary bridges having a few grain boundaries in the bridge region. The devices showed clear Shapiro steps and SQUID patterns at 77 K.

Abstract:As a newly developed method for fabricating Josephson junctions, a focused helium ion beam has the advantage of producing reliable and reproducible junctions. We fabricated Josephson junctions with a focused helium ion beam on our 50 nm YBa2Cu3O7 – δ (YBCO) thin films. We focused on the junction with irradiation doses ranging from 100 to 300 ions/nm and demonstrated that the junction barrier can be modulated by the ion dose and that within this dose range, the junctions behave like superconductor–normal conductor–superconductor junctions. The measurements of the I–V characteristics, Fraunhofer diffraction pattern, and Shapiro steps of the junctions clearly show AC and DC Josephson effects. Our findings demonstrate high reproducibility of junction fabrication using a focused helium ion beam and suggest that commercial devices based on this nanotechnology could operate at liquid nitrogen temperatures.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the successful fabrication and current-voltage characteristics of the YBa2Cu3O7 step-edge Josephson junctions on MgO substrates. Our junctions were fabricated by patterning the laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7 thin film on MgO substrates with ion-milled steps. Integer Shapiro steps were observed in the I–V characteristics up to 1 THz under 72 GHz external microwave irradiation. We also estimated the effective shunting capacitance from the voltage of the Fiske resonance observed.

Abstract:In our experiments, YBaCuO films were deposited onto [100]MgO substrates by pulsed excimer laser ablation and annealed in low-pressure oxygen to make them oxygen deficient. The films, which were c-axis oriented with transition temperatures around 50 K, were then fabricated into mesa-like devices with an a-b plane area of a few square microns. Important features of our device are its novel microwave coupling and reduced leakage current between the top and bottom electrodes. By ramping the bias current up and down repeatedly and measuring the dc current-voltage curves, we successfully observed typical intrinsic Josephson effects such as hysteresis, voltage jumps of a few millivolts, as well as dozens of branches with regular voltage intervals. The observed microwave response, in the range of a few to 110 GHz, indicates that these oxygen-deficient YBaCuO intrinsic Josephson junctions may find many millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave applications.

Abstract:We have studied the microwave induced steps of the grain-boundary junctions fabricated with epitaxial superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thin films on bicrystal substrates. Clear steps up to N=46 were observed in the current-voltage characteristics at liquid nitrogen temperature. The comparison between the prediction of RSJ model has been made and the structure non-uniformity is introduced to interpret the discrepancy of step-height as a function of microwave amplitude.

Abstract:Reproducible High Tc Josephson junctions have been made in a rather simple two-step process using ion irradiation. A microbridge 1 to 5 micrometers wide is firstly designed by ion irradiating a c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7 film through a gold mask such as the unprotected part becomes insulating. A lower Tc part is then defined within the bridge by irradiating with a much lower dose through a 20 nm wide narrow slit opened in a standard electronic photoresist. These planar junctions, whose settings can be finely tuned, exhibit reproducible and nearly ideal Josephson characteristics. Non hysteretic Resistively Shunted Junction (RSJ) like behavior is observed, together with sinc Fraunhofer patterns for rectangular junctions. The IcRn product varies with temperature ; it can reach a few mV. The typical resistance ranges from 0.1 to a few ohms, and the critical current density can be as high as 30 kA/cm2. The dispersion in characteristics is very low, in the 5% to 10% range. Such nanojunctions have been used to make microSQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) operating at Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) temperature. They exhibit a very small asymmetry, a good sensitivity and a rather low noise. The process is easily scalable to make rather complex Josephson circuits.

Abstract:Observation of Shapiro steps is probably the most convincing demonstration of the Josephson effects in superconducting weak links. To observe Shapiro steps in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs), we used side-wall of gold to resistively-shunt these junctions in a conventional mesa structure. In the current–voltage (I–V) characteristics of these shunted IJJs, the voltage jumps and the hysteresis were greatly reduced. In particular, individual Shapiro steps were clearly observed with irradiation up to 100 GHz, thus providing direct evidence for the ac Josephson effect in intrinsic high-Tc stack junctions. Also discussed will be the conditions for achieving stable phase locking between the external irradiation and internal Josephson oscillation. We believe that resistive shunting of the junction stacks makes it possible for them to be used in on-chip detection or coherent oscillation up to terahertz region.

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) Josephson junctions can possibly accelerate the development of advanced superconducting device that utilizes the unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors such as spin-orbit coupling, spin-valley locking. Here, we fabricate vertically stacked NbS$_{2}$/NbS$_{2}$ Josephson junctions using a modified all-dry transfer technique and characterize the device performance via systematic low-temperature transport measurements. The experimental results show that the superconducting transition temperature of the NbS$_{2}$/NbS$_{2}$ Josephson junction is 5.84 K, and the critical current density reaches 3975 A/cm$^{2}$ at 2K. Moreover, we extract a superconducting energy gap $\Delta=0.58$ meV, which is considerably smaller than that expected from the single band s-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model ($\Delta=0.89$ meV).

Abstract:With a thin gold layer, we fabricated mesa-like shunted intrinsic Josephson junction stacks on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x single crystals. Instead of the multibranch structure and large voltage jumps often observed in conventional intrinsic junctions, current-voltage characteristics typical of resistively shunted junctions were obtained. Individual Shapiro steps were clearly visible with irradiation at frequencies from a few to 20 GHz. The experiments demonstrated not only the ac Josephson effects directly but also the possibility of employing intrinsic Josephson junctions in high-frequency applications. Abstract:A new technology for high temperature superconducting Josephson tunnelling junctions is developed to enhance their properties for applications on‐a‐chip, avoiding additional fabrication complexity. Junctions with alternating nano‐layers of YBa2Cu3O7 and NdBa2Cu3O7 superconductors with a small mismatch between their crystal lattices exhibit stronger tunneling properties due to tuning the artificial grain boundary interfaces of the junctions.

Abstract:Results are presented on the fabrication and characterization of high critical temperature Josephson junctions in thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−δ produced by the process of focused electron-beam irradiation using 350 keV electrons. The junctions so produced have uniform spatial current densities, can be described in terms of the resistive shunted junction model, and their current densities can be tailored for a given operating temperature. The physical properties of the damaged barrier can be described as a superconducting material of either reduced or zero critical temperature (Tc), which has a length of ∼15 nm. The Tc reduction is caused primarily by oxygen Frenkel defects in the Cu–O planes. The large beam currents used in the fabrication of the junctions mean that the extent of the barrier is limited by the incident electron-beam diameter, rather than by scattering within the film. The properties of the barrier can be calculated using a superconductor/normal/superconductor (SNS) junction model with no boundary resistance. From the SNS model, we can predict the scaling of the critical current–resistance (IcRn) product and gain insight into the factors controlling the junction properties, Tc, and reproducibility. From the measured IcRn scaling data, we can predict the IcRn product of a junction at a given operating temperature with a given current density. IcRn products of ∼2 mV can be achieved at 4.2 K. The reproducibility of several junctions in a number of samples can be characterized by the ratio of the maximum-to-minimum critical currents on the same substrate of less than 1.4. Stability over several months has been demonstrated at room and refrigerator temperatures (297 and 281 K) for junctions that have been initially over damaged and then annealed at temperatures ∼380 K. Junctions manufactured using conventional lithography (0.5 μm wide) and which are suitable for digital electronics (Ic=500 μA at 40 K) can achieve IcRn products of 650 μV at 40 K. The production of 100 of these stabilized junctions could be accomplished in ∼4 h of irradiation time. The IcRn scaling also indicates that junctions suitable for high sensitivity superconducting quantum interference devices (Ic∼100 μA) can be made with IcRn products of ∼120 μV at 77 K.

Abstract:This paper describes recent results on the fabrication, electrical characteristics, and microstructure of high-temperature superconducting edge-type Josephson junctions with modified interface barriers. The barriers are formed by surface modification of the YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-/spl delta// base layer. This process involves structural and chemical modification by ion irradiation and crystallization by annealing. The junctions showed resistively and capacitively shunted junction-like current-voltage characteristics and excellent uniformity. The spread in the critical current for one hundred junctions was smaller than 1/spl sigma/=10% at 4.2 K. The uniformity is now approaching 1/spl sigma/=5%. The junction characteristics have remained the same after two-year room-temperature storage. They also showed no change after high-temperature processing at about 700/spl deg/C. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that both the crystal structure and chemical composition in relatively thick barriers are different from those of YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-/spl delta//.

Abstract:Josephson devices have demonstrated the capability to work as harmonic mixers at terahertz frequencies. Low temperature devices, in particular Nb–Nb point contacts have proven particularly successful. However, practical applications of these devices have been limited by the need of utilizing liquid helium. To overcome this limitation we have investigated the use of high-Tc devices. In this paper, we report mixings up to the 154th harmonic at zero-bias in a series of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) grain boundary Josephson junctions. We have integrated a meander series of three bicrystal YBCO Josephson junctions with a log-periodic antenna. When properly operated, this configuration allows to reach a harmonic number much higher than what possible with a single junction. This shows that the mixing performance benefits from the synchronous operation which also results in an improvement of dynamic range. We believe that the integration of a higher number of phase-locked junctions may further improve the mixer’s performance. Future studies should investigate the effect of higher number of junctions on the mixer performances, as well as the effect of the meander length.
