Abstract:An efficient gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for determination of sterol oxidation products (SOPs) in edible oils. The sample preparation involved cold saponification, liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction on a silica gel cartridge, and trimethylsilylation by N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl) heptafluorobutyramide with 5% 1-methyl imidazole. The trimethylsilyl ether derivatives of SOPs were separated by gas chromatography with a 30 m DB-5MS capillary column and quantified by a mass spectrometer in selective ion monitoring mode. 5a-Cholestane and 19-hydroxycholesterol were used as dual internal standards. The calibration curves for each compound showed correlation coefficients (R-2) better than 0.98. The detection limits were below 12.9 ng mL(-1) (except for epoxides). The intra- and inter-day determination precisions for diversiform SOPs were <10% in relative standard deviations; the recoveries ranged within 89.72% and 117.42%. The developed approach was successfully applied to study the presence of thirty-four different SOPs present at low levels in camellia, olive, sesame, peanut, rapeseed, rice bran, soybean and corn oils.
Analysis of (−)-Shikimic Acid in Chinese Star Anise by GC–MS with Selected Ion Monitoring

Abstract:A sensitive, specific, accurate, and reproducible GC–MS method with selected ion monitoring for quantitative determination of (−)-shikimic acid (SA) in Chinese star anise, using benzoic acid as internal standard, has been developed and validated. The homogeneity of the sample was evaluated by one way analysis of variance. The extraction efficiency of ultrasound-assisted and Soxhlet extraction was compared. Results showed that ultrasonic extraction was as efficient as Soxhlet extraction but was more rapid and simpler. Linearity and recovery were good. The method was used for analysis of (−)-SA in Chinese star anise from different areas in Wenshan state, Yunnan province. It was found that Chinese star anise collected from Pingbian and Funing counties contained more (−)-SA than other samples, with two plants from Pingbian county containing >15% (−)-SA.
Simultaneous Determination of Seven Components of Volatile Oil in Elsholtzia Blanda by Headspace Gas Chromatography

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To develnp a quantitative method for the determination of seven different components of volatile oil in Elsholtzia blanda,and compare primarily their contents extracted with different methods.METHODS The contents of seven components were analyzed by headspace gas chromatography with INNOWAX capillary column(0.53 mm×30 m,5μm).The column temperature raised by programming,the intial temperature was 60℃,and was raised to 90℃at the rate of 30℃·min~(-1)for 30 min and then was raised to 180℃at the rate of 5℃·min~(-1).The injector temperature was set at 200℃,the detector temperature of FID was at 240℃. RESULTS Seven components were completely separated.The calibration curves ofα-pinene,β-pinene,1,8-cineol,camphor,linalool, bornyl acetate,borneol,were linear within the range of 33～330,32～320,111～1110,238～2380,140～1400,65～650,53～530 mg·L~(-1),the correlation coefficient were 0.9999,0.9998,0.9998,0.9996,0.9997,0.9995,0.9995,and their average recover- ies(n=9)were 96.6%,97.0%,97.8%,99.9%,96.5%,97.4% and 97.1%,respectively.CONCLUSION The method is simple, accurate and sensitive,and can be used for quality control of E.blanda and its further reseach.

Abstract:Abstract To establish a method for fast discrimination of avocado oil for different extracted methods, the headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectroscopy (HS-GC-IMS) combined with principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analyze non-target volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The results showed that 40 VOCs were identified, and the VOCs of the extraction method had a significant difference and had been well distinguished in PCA. The species and content of avocado oil obtained by squeeze method were more than the aqueous methods and supercritical carbon dioxide extraction methods (SC CO 2 ). In addition, the different avocado oil had their characteristic compounds: the 2-acetylthiazole and ethyl propionate were the unique compounds in the avocado oil obtained by SC CO 2 . A rapid method for the determination of avocado oil obtained by different extraction methods based on HS-GC-IMS had been established, and the method was fast and simple and had a good application prospect in the prediction of avocado oil processing methods.

Determination of Flavonoid Compounds in Shanxi Aged Vinegars Based on Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvent VALLME-HPLC Method: Assessment of the Environmental Impact of the Developed Method

Abstract:This research presents a novel, eco-friendly, vortex-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction (VALLME) approach, integrating hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with HPLC for the identification and quantification of nine specific flavonoids in Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV). The parameters of DES-VALLME, including the ratio of trioctylmethylammonium chloride to 1,4-butanediol (1:6), DES volume (150 μL), vortex duration (5 min), the concentration of NaCl (0.40 g), and centrifugation time (10 min), were optimized to achieve the maximum extraction efficiency of target substances. Under these optimal conditions, quantitative analyses performed via HPLC demonstrated a broad linear range of 0.20–50.00 μg/mL and correlation coefficients (r2) greater than 0.9944 for all nine calibration curves. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.09–0.18 μg/mL and 0.30–0.60 μg/mL, respectively, ensuring high sensitivity. The relative standard deviations for intra-day and inter-day variability were within the acceptable range, 2.34–3.77% and 3.04–4.96%, respectively, demonstrating the method's reliability. The recovery rates ranged from 85.97% to 108.11%, underscoring the method's precision. This technique exhibited a significant enrichment effect (enrichment factor: 43 to 296) on SAV flavonoids. Notably, the eco-friendliness of this procedure was evaluated using the Analytical Eco-Scale, Green Analytical Procedure Index, and Analytical Greenness Metric. The results suggested that this technique is a viable green alternative to traditional flavonoid determination methods in SAV. In summary, this novel method provides a theoretical basis for assessing flavonoid content in SAV samples and tracing SAV products. This contribution has significant implications for enhancing analytical techniques in food chemistry and environmental science and the sustainable development of the food industry.

[Determination of Underivatized Long-Chain Fatty Acids in Edible Oils by Fast Gas Chromatography].

Abstract:A fast gas chromatography (GC) method with short micro-bore capillary column was developed for the determination of underivatized long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) in edible oils. Baseline separation of eight kinds of LCFAs (dodecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, eicosanic acid, erudcic acid, behenic acid) was achieved within 2 min with high resolution performance. The linear correlation coefficients for underivatized LCFAs were higher than 0. 988 and detection limits (at signal-to-noise of 3:1 ) were 2. 80 -9. 60 mg/L. The method is easy and low-cost and has the ability to achieve an accurate determination of the LCFAs in three edible oils.
Separation and Detection of Catechins and Epicatechins in Shanxi Aged Vinegar Using Solid-Phase Extraction and Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents Combined with HPLC

Abstract:This research presents a new, eco-friendly, and swift method combining solid-phase extraction and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DES) with high-performance liquid chromatography (SPE-DES-HPLC) for extracting and quantifying catechin and epicatechin in Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV). The parameters, such as the elution solvent type, the XAD-2 macroporous resin dosage, the DES ratio, the DES volume, the adsorption time, and the desorption time, were optimized via a one-way experiment. A central composite design using the Box–Behnken methodology was employed to investigate the effects of various factors, including 17 experimental runs and the construction of three-dimensional response surface plots to identify the optimal conditions. The results show that the optimal conditions were an HDES (tetraethylammonium chloride and octanoic acid) ratio of 1:3, an XAD-2 macroporous resin dosage of 188 mg, and an adsorption time of 11 min. Under these optimal conditions, the coefficients of determination of the method were greater than or equal to 0.9917, the precision was less than 5%, and the recoveries ranged from 98.8% to 118.8%. The environmentally friendly nature of the analytical process and sample preparation was assessed via the Analytical Eco-Scale and AGREE, demonstrating that this method is a practical and eco-friendly alternative to conventional determination techniques. In summary, this innovative approach offers a solid foundation for the assessment of flavanol compounds present in SAV samples.

Multi-Residue Analysis of Chemical Additives in Edible Vegetable Oils Using QuEChERS Extraction Method Followed by Supercritical Fluid Chromatography

Abstract:Since the quality and safety of food highly depend on its preservation and protection, the use of food packaging materials increases the risk of chemical contamination of the packaged food by migration. Herein, we focused on antioxidants, photoinitiators, UV absorbers and plasticizers which are extensive additives used in food packaging materials. In the present study, a rapid, simple, green and reliable method was developed and validated for the determination of twelve chemical additives in edible vegetable oils using SFC together with a modified QuEChERS procedure. Under the optimum conditions, twelve additives were separated within 10 min, and the consumption of the organic solvent was significantly reduced, which improved the environmentally friendliness. The performance of the developed method was evaluated. Good linearity (r > 0.999) was obtained in the range of 0.20-20.0 mu g/mL and 0.50-20.0 mu g/mL, respectively. The limits of detection and limits of quantification of the twelve additives in vegetable oils were 0.05-0.15 mu g/mL and 0.15-0.50 mu g/mL, respectively. Recoveries of all the chemical additives for the spiked samples were between 60.9% and 106.4%, with relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 9.9%. The results demonstrated that the proposed method was efficient, reliable and robust for the routine analysis of additives in edible vegetable oils and can be an alternative to the multi-residue analysis of chemical additives for other packaged foods.

Abstract:Edible oil blends are composed of two or more edible oils in varying proportions, which can ensure nutritional balance compared to oils comprising a single component oil. In view of their economical and nutritional benefits, quantitative analysis of the component oils in edible oil blends is necessary to ensure the rights and interests of consumers and maintain fairness in the edible oil market. Chemometrics combined with modern analytical instruments has become a main analytical technology for the quantitative analysis of edible oil blends. This review summarizes the different oil blend design methods, instrumental techniques and chemometric methods for conducting single component oil quantification in edible oil blends. The aim is to classify and compare the existing analytical techniques to highlight suitable and promising determination methods in this field.

Fast GC Analysis of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters Using a Highly Polar Ionic Liquid Column and its Application for the Determination of Trans Fatty Acid Contents in Edible Oils

Abstract:A simple and rapid methyl esterification technique for edible oils and a high-throughput procedure for the separation and quantification of fatty acid methyl esters including cis/trans isomers by fast GC using a highly polar ionic liquid column have been established. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of trans fatty acid contents in commercially available edible oils, such as margarine, fat spread, shortening, olive oil, rapeseed oil, salad oil, and sesame oil. Combining the developed methyl esterification and fast GC techniques reduced the time required for the analysis of one edible oil specimen to less than 30 min; thus, the analysis time was shortened substantially to less than one-third that required in the existing official methods such as those of the American Oil Chemists’ Society and Japanese Oil Chemists’ Society. The contents determined by the developed method agreed with those determined by the existing official methods, thus confirming the reliability of the fast GC method.

Research on Prediction Method of Fatty Acid Content in Edible Oil Based on Raman Spectroscopy and Multi-Output Least Squares Support Vector Regression Machine

Abstract:For the purpose of the rapid prediction of saturated fatty acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid content in edible vegetable oil, the Raman spectra of a batch of edible vegetable oils and their one-one mixtures with different ratios were measured in the range of 800-2 000 cm(-1), 91 samples were measured totally in this research, the obtained Raman spectra data were preprocessed by a new method proposed in this paper called auto-set fulcrums baseline fitting method based on peak-seeking algorithm, and 8 characteristic peak values (872 cm(-1) [v(C-C)], 972 cm(-1) [delta(C=C) trans], 1 082 cm(-1) [v(C-C)], 1 267 cm(-1) [delta(=C-H) cis], 1 303 cm(-1) [delta(CH2) twisting], 1 442 cm(-1) [delta(CH2) scissoring], 1 658 cm(-1) [v(C=C) cis], 1 748 cm(-1) [v(C=O)]) were extracted to be the eigenvalues for the whole spectra, among the 8 peaks there are three peaks (972, 1 267, 1 658 cm(-1)) that play an important role in the establishment of mathematical model, they are closely concerned with C=C band which distinguishes the three fatty acid types. By using these eigenvalues as inputs, and actual saturated fatty acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid contents of sample oils as outputs, a prediction mathematical model that predicts simultaneously the three fatty acid contents was established using multiple regression analysis: multi-output least squares support vector regression machine (MLS-SVR) and partial least squares (PLS). Results show that the MLS-SVR has better effects. The predicting results are compared with results of gas chromatography(GC), and the obtained root mean square error of prediction(RMSEP) for saturated fatty acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid are 0.496 7%, 0.840 0% and 1.019 9%, and the correlation coefficients (r) are 0.813 3, 0.999 2 and 0.998 1, respectively. When this model is applied in the detection of new unknown oil samples, the prediction error does not exceed 5%. Results show that the Raman spectra analysis technology based on MLS-SVR can be a convenient, fast, non-destructive, and precise new method for oil detection.

Abstract:A reliable routine method based on headspace solid-phase micro-extraction coupled with chromatography–mass spectrometry for quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in apple was developed. Homogenization of apple always results in the losses or changes of VOCs by browning reactions. In this study, sodium chloride was added particularly before sample homogenization to avoid browning. After the optimization of key experimental parameters including sample preparation, incubation, and extraction, determination of VOCs in apples from various geographical origins of China was performed. Total 51 VOCs including 26 esters, 7 alcohols, 6 ketones, 6 aldehydes, 4 alkenes, 1 acid, and 1 phenol were detected in apples. This work offered an analytical method with great potential for VOCs analysis, and useful information of VOCs in apples from China.

Abstract:A sensitive and robust on-line LC/MS method was developed for quantitative determination of linoleic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and docosanoic acid from edible oil samples. The oil samples were dissolved in chloroform-isopropyl alcohol (20:80, v : v ) solution and the three fatty acids were separated by HPLC with a C4 column using 10 mmol/L ammonium acetate-isopropyl alcohol-acetonitrile (20:40:40, v : v : v ) mobile phase in isocratic elution. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry with the selected ion recording monitoring was used to detect and quantify the fatty acid. The calibration curves were linear in the range of 10.00–5000 pg/mL for linoleic acid and docosanoic acid, and 1.000–500.0 pg/mL for docosahexaenoic acid. The limit of detection was 2.0 pg/mL for linoleic acid, 3.0 pg/mL for docosanoic acid, and 0.20 pg/mL for docosahexaenoic acid. The results showed that the method described in this paper could be utilized for rapid determination of three fatty acids at picogram levels in edible oils.

Abstract:A method for rapid analysis of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in edible oils has been developed on the basis of a simplified solvent extraction and liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure photoionization tandem mass spectrometry performed in multiple reaction monitoring mode. The briefness of the experimental procedure, the use of milliliters of acetonitrile for extraction without any further cleanup process, the short analysis time, and the excellent sensitivity and selectivity demonstrated the advantages of this practical and environmentally friendly method. All the analytes exhibited satisfactory recoveries at three spiking levels (the recoveries ranged from 77.8 to 106.4 %), and the relative standard deviations were lower than 10 %. The limits of quantitation of this method for the 16 PAHs were in the range of 0.02–0.43 μg/kg. The validated method was successfully applied for the determination of PAHs in coconut oil reference material (BCR-458) and real edible oil samples. Abstract:This study employed headspace solid phase micro‐extraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS‐SPME‐GC–MS) coupled with multivariate statistical analysis to identify characteristic volatiles in various grades of Zhenjiang Aromatic Vinegar (ZAV). Two volatile compounds were discriminated as key compounds for differentiating the grades of ZAV. This study employed headspace solid phase micro‐extraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS‐SPME‐GC–MS) coupled with multivariate statistical analysis to identify volatile markers in various levels of Zhenjiang Aromatic Vinegar (ZAV). A full range of 40 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified and categorized into acids, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, heterocyclic compounds and others. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) demonstrated a clear clustering effect among different levels of ZAV, indicating distinct volatile characteristics at the relative content level. Furthermore, using Orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS‐DA), 20 significant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified as markers for distinguishing between the various levels of ZAV. To differentiate among the levels of ZAV, two volatile compounds, acetic acid and n‐hexanol, were identified as characteristic volatile compounds using a combination of Venn diagram, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and boxplot analysis. The results showed notable variations in VOCs among ZAV samples of different grades. Acetic acid and n‐hexanol can serve as reliable markers for grade distinction, providing valuable technical and theoretical support for the production and quality control of ZAV.

First Determination of Glycidyl Ester Species in Edible Oils by Reverse-Phase Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled with an Evaporative Light-Scattering Detector

Abstract:In this work, a new ultra-performance liquid chromatograph-evaporative light-scattering detector (UPLC-ELSD) method for quantitation of glycidyl esters (GE) contents in edible oils is presented. The method features complete separation of five GE species within 20 min by a C18 column and gradient elution with a mobile phase consisting of 85% and 2.5% methanol aqueous solutions. The coefficients of regression (R2) were all ≥0.9999 for the linear-quadratic regression curves of GE species in a concentration range of 5~80 μg/mL. The intraday and interday recoveries (%) of GE species in solvent were in a range of 81.3~107.3%, and the intraday and interday coefficients of variation (CVs, %) were all ≤8.6%. The average recovery (%) of GE species spiked in extra-virgin olive oil samples ranged from 88.3~107.8% and the intermediate precision (CV, %) of ≤14% indicated acceptable accuracy and precision. The method exhibited limit of quantification (LOQ) for each GE species (0.6 μg glycidol equivalents/g oil). The method was applied to determine GE concentrations of six commercial oil samples, and total glycidol equivalents were consistent with data obtained by GC-MS method. This UPLC-ELSD method could be adopted for precursory screening and research purposes to improve food safety when MS detectors are unavailable.

Abstract:A solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method was developed to determine the volatile compounds in Shanxi aged vinegar. The optimal extraction conditions were: 50 °C for 20 min with a PDMS/DVB fiber. This analytical method was validated and showed satisfactory repeatability (0.5 %<RSD<12 %), reproducibility (2.5 %<RSD<15.6 %), accuracy and linearity in analysis of volatile compounds. According to the calculation of odor activity value, 19 volatile compounds were identified as aroma-active compounds. Among them, propanoic acid, acetic acid, trimethyl-oxazole, butanoic acid, acetoin, 3-methylbutanoic acid and furfural were the most powerful odorants. The aroma wheel of Shanxi aged vinegar showed that the classes of sensory descriptors are first fatty and roasty, next woody and nutty and minor fruity and floral. Principal component analysis enabled us to investigate dissimilarity/similarity of Shanxi aged vinegar sample of different raw material and ageing time.

Abstract:In this study, vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (VA-LLME) based on hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) was used to efficiently and sustainably extract five phenolic acids and tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) from Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV). The VA-LLME technique was employed to investigate the extraction mechanism of HDES with the best extraction performance for the target compounds using a conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS). An artificial neural network combined with a genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) was developed to optimize the extraction conditions based on single-factor and response surface methodology, while also analyzing the interactive effects on the phenolic acids and TMP in the extracted solution during the extraction phase. The optimized conditions were determined, and the greenness of the procedure was evaluated using an analytical greenness metric, indicating that this technique can serve as a green alternative for the determination of phenolic acids and TMP in SAV.
Optimization and validation of in-situ derivatization and headspace solid-phase microextraction for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of 3-MCPD esters, 2-MCPD esters and glycidyl esters in edible oils via central composite design

Abstract:This study aimed to develop a headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method for the quantification of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol fatty acid esters (3-MCPDEs) and 2-monochloropropane-1,3-diol fatty acid esters (2-MCPDEs), and semi-quantification of glycidyl fatty acid esters (GEs) in edible oils. A central composite design was implemented to optimize the derivatization temperature and extraction time, which were 100 °C and 80 min, respectively. HS-SPME coupled with in-situ derivatization was more straightforward (three steps) and sensitive, with a limit of detection of 16% (3.9 µg/L) and 11% (5.3 µg/L) higher than that of liquid injection method, for 3-MCPD and 2-MCPD, respectively. The recoveries of 3-MCPD and 2-MCPD were in the range of 91.1% to 102.1%, with a relative standard deviation ranging from 0.08 to 9.29%. The validated methodology was successfully applied to oil samples. Further efforts will focus on shortening the extraction time, as 80 min is relatively long.

Abstract:Edible oil adulteration is the biggest source of food fraud all over the world. Since characteristic aroma is an important quality criterion for edible oils, we analyzed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in four edible vegetable oils (soybean, peanut, rapeseed, and sunflower seed oils) by headspace comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Headspace-GC×GC-TOFMS) in this study. After qualitative and quantitative analysis of VOCs, we used unsupervised (PCA) and supervised (Random forests) multivariate statistical methods to build a classification model for the four edible oils. The results indicated that the four edible oils had their own characteristic VOCs, which could be used as markers to completely classify these four edible oils into four groups.
