Abstract:In order to improve the hydrophobicity of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fabric, micro-and nano-scale structures were built by coating the fabric surface based on the lotus effect. Silica aerogel was dispersed in polyvinylidene fluoride for preparing coating solution, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fabric was coated by the solution. The chemical composition and microstructure of the fabric surface were detected by a X-ray photoelectron spectrograph, a scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope. The self-cleaning properties of the fabric were mearsured by the ash collection test. The results show that when the mass fraction of PVDF is 12% and that of the silica aerogel is 8%,the maximum contact angle of the coated fabric surface is 157.8°,and the rolling angle is 3°. The coated film surface has micro-scale projections and nano-scale particle projections. Stain on the coated fabric surface can be taken away by water droplets,so the fabric surface has excellent self-cleaning property.
Dip-Coating Approach to Fabricate Durable PDMS/STA/SiO2 Superhydrophobic Polyester Fabrics

Abstract:The facile, simple, highly efficient, and fluorine-free fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces on fabrics with high durability has attracted considerable attention because of its urgent practical application. The simple dip-coating method was adopted to make a stable and durable polydimethylsiloxane/stearic acid/silica (PDMS/STA/SiO2) superhydrophobic fabric. The fabric’s surface morphology, roughness, and composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. The PDMS/STA/SiO2-coated fabric: demonstrated strong superhydrophobicity (a water contact angle (WCA) of around 163°), efficiently repelled different liquids (milk, coffee, orange juice, Coca-Cola, and 1 M of HCl and NaOH) with a contact angle above 155°, had excellent self-cleaning performance, and retained superhydrophobicity with a WCA greater than 150° after 72 h of ultraviolet irradiation and 700 cycles of mechanical abrasion. The PDMS/STA/SiO2 coating had few influences on the color fastness of the fabric. Superhydrophobic coatings are expected to be practically applied in the textile industry.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings have broad applications in a variety of industries. By using a low-surface-energy material and creating nanoscale roughness, a superhydrophobic surface can be produced. To overcome the health and environmental concerns of fluorine-based materials and the limitations of large-scale rough microstructure fabrication, a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based hierarchical superhydrophobic fabric coating prepared by simple thermal treatment and electrostatic flocking technology was introduced in this study. High-temperature thermal treatment is employed to create PDMS nanoparticle-decorated carbon fibers, which are further vertically implanted onto the surface of cotton fabric via electrostatic flocking technology. The environmentally friendly PDMS nanoparticles were adopted as low-surface-energy materials, and the electrostatic flocking technology was utilized to generate a vertically aligned carbon fiber array coating, mimicking a lotus leaf-like superhydrophobic surface microstructure. Therefore, an ultrahigh water contact angle of 173.9 ± 2.8° and a low sliding angle of 1 ± 0.5° can be obtained by the fabric coating with a PDMS-to-carbon fiber ratio of 20:1. The prepared superhydrophobic fabric also exhibits an excellent self-cleaning property and great durability after 60 cycles of washing. Through commercially available thermal treatment and electrostatic flocking processes, this strategy for fabricating fluorine-free superhydrophobic fabric can be easily scaled up for commercial manufacturing and promotes the design of superhydrophobic coatings for other substrates.

Abstract:We introduce a simple, fluorine-free, inexpensive route to fabricate a stable superhydrophobic coating comprising Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/ZnO composite modified with Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The MWCNTs/ZnO composite was prepared by a sol-gel method. The composite coating can be applied on various substrates using a simple dip-coating method to achieve superhydrophobicity. The wettability of composite coating was investigated by adjusting MWCNTs loading in the composite solution. The result indicates that 2.5 wt. % of MWCNTs in the PDMS modified MWCNTs/ZnO composite displayed excellent superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle of 156° and a sliding angle of 4°. The coating was applied onto the copper mesh to separate oil-water mixtures because of its unique superhydrophobic and superoleophilic property and shows the high efficiency of separation of over 95 % for different oils with outstanding reusability. Furthermore, coating shows excellent self-cleaning, anti-fouling properties and retained its superhydrophobicity against strong acidic/alkaline solutions, corrosive medium, and demonstrated long-term durability in the ambient environment. Importantly, the coating also displayed excellent flame retardant performance compared to the uncoated surface and still exhibited its water repellency property after combustion. The proposed facile, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technique can provide a new tool to design durable and scalable superhydrophobic materials with special properties in the near future.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have attracted extensive attention and possess widespread application prospects in different domains owing to their exceptional waterproofness. There is an urgent need to develop new high-performance superhydrophobic coatings in a low-cost way to meet the various requirements. Herein, utilizing spray coating and thermal treatment procedures, we prepared a high-performance superhydrophobic coating composed of mullite fiber, reduced graphene oxide , and methyl silicone via a one-dimensional (1D)/two-dimensional (2D) hybridization strategy. The surface morphology , chemical durability, mechanical durability, and heat resistance of the coating were investigated. Meanwhile, the wettability and self-cleaning ability of the coating were assessed through a sandpaper abrasion test. The results indicate the as-fabricated coating displays excellent water repellency. Moreover, aside from its excellent self-cleaning ability, the obtained coating has superhydrophobicity despite being immersed in NaCl, HCl, and NaOH aqueous solutions for 200 days. The coating also shows favorable heat resistance, so it can sustain superhydrophobicity up to 350 °C for 10 h. Furthermore, the coating exhibits superior mechanical durability under sandpaper abrasion for 12 m. All these results reveal that the eco-friendly, cost-effective, and durable superhydrophobic coating has great application potential in practical conditions.

Abstract:It is highly desirable to develop superlyophobic surfaces under liquid system that can act as a versatile platform for separation of both oil/water and oil/oil mixtures and removing dye from water, but it is still hard to achieve. Herein, a graphene oxide/polydopamine (GO/PDA) coating with superlyophobicity under liquid system was fabricated through the self-polymerization of dopamine anchored on the GO sheet surface. The obtained GO/PDA coating possessed both under-water superoleophobicity and under-oil superhydrophobicity. Utilizing its dual superlyophobicity under an oil/water system, the GO/PDA coated fabric was applied to on-demand oil/water separation. Amazingly, the GO/PDA coated fabric exhibited dual superoleophobicity under an immiscible oil/oil system, which allowed it to separate oil/oil mixtures effectively. Due to the water affinity, layered texture, and absorption effect of the GO/PDA coating, the GO/PDA coated fabric can be served as a filtration module for removing dye from water efficiently. Moreover, the GO/PDA coating could also serve as a barrier to protect metal against corrosion.
Superhydrophobic Al2O3/MMT-PDMS Coated Fabric for Self-Cleaning and Oil-Water Separation Application

Abstract:This study introduces a novel superhydrophobic coating applied to the fabric surface through spray coating of the Al2O3/MMT nanocomposite and PDMS polymer to enhance the surface roughness and reduce the surface tension, respectively. The as-prepared coating exhibits a remarkable superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle (WCA) of ∼174.6° and a water sliding angle (WSA) < 5°. Notably, the fabric demonstrates a self-cleaning property through removing dust and dirt via adhering to water droplets. Moreover, the insignificant loss of WCA (3.2 and 1%) after exposure to alkaline and acidic media for 10 days verifies the promising chemical stability of the coated layer, whereas WCA > 160° after 24 h of immersion in various organic solvents further indicates the layer resistance. Besides, the layer sustains WCA of 174.5, 172.5, and 168.45° after 1 month of air exposure, ultrasonic washing, and 50 cycles of home laundry. The mechanical resistance of the fabric was verified by maintaining a WCA of 158.73° after 200 abrasion cycles. Also, the layer exhibits thermal resistance with <4.1% of WCA loss in the temperature range of -10 to 180 °C. Additionally, the superhydrophobic coating excels in oil-water separation, achieving >99% separation efficiency for various oils. These exceptional properties position the fabric for diverse applications, including protective clothing, outdoor gear, medical textiles, and sportswear, emphasizing its versatility and novelty in the realm of superhydrophobic materials.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a highly reliable thermosetting polymer with exceptional chemical and mechanical resistance, as well as remarkable water repellency and adhesive performance. Its unique features make it the preferred choice for fluorine-free hydrophobic coatings. However, the use of PDMS requires organic solvents that are toxic and environmentally hazardous. In this study, an emulsion composed of amine-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-NH2) in an environmentally friendly solvent, water, was prepared. Subsequently, glutaraldehyde (GA) was added and crosslinked to generate a hydrophobic PDMS–GA emulsion. The PDMS–GA emulsion is a low-viscosity solution that can infiltrate different types of fabrics (cotton, nylon, and polyester) or paper with numerous intertwined fibers. After dipping the fabrics and paper into the prepared PDMS–GA emulsion, they were washed in an aqueous solution containing dispersed kaolin particles and dried to yield a rough structure. As a result, a hydrophobic surface with a water contact angle of 151.2° was achieved. Furthermore, after exposure to strongly acidic or alkaline solutions (pH 1–13) and washing six times with water, the hydrophobic fabric remained chemically stable. Additionally, it withstood ten tape peeling tests, proving its mechanical durability. Crucially, the hydrophobic treatment method does not involve fluorine and uses eco-friendly water as the solvent. Therefore, this is a convenient way to apply waterproof coatings to functional textiles that require water resistance and are expected to have great industrial applications.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings with micro and nano structures have great potential in a wide spectrum of fields due to their multifunctionality. However, some disadvantages, such as poor wear resistance and containing toxic fluorine substances, greatly limit the practical application of superhydrophobic coatings. To overcome these shortcomings, herein we have prepared a double-layer coating without fluorine which demonstrates superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of 159.5°. The bottom layer of KH560-graphene oxide (GO)/epoxy (EP) and the surface layer of hydrophobic hexadecyltrimethoxysilane modified SiO 2 (HDTMS-SiO 2 ) is prepared by scraping and spraying, respectively. The bottom layer of KH560-GO/EP effectively promotes the adhesion of the top SiO 2 layer and the coating maintains a superhydrophobic state even after sandpaper sanding, compressive studies and sand impact. In addition, the coating also has superior self-cleaning, anti-fouling, and anti-icing abilities, and it takes 157 s for it to ice up. More importantly, the superhydrophobic coating also exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance due to the synergistic effect of well-dispersed GO and hydrophobic surfaces. This work has demonstrated the great potential of fabricating composite superhydrophobic coatings via artificial architecture design for diversified applications.

Abstract:As long-perfluorinated side chain polymers are phasing out due to healthy and environmental concerns, short-fluorinated polymers are garnering increasing attention as a substitute for superhydrophobic coatings. Challenges, however, are to be addressed due to the poor dynamic water repellency and unsatisfactory durability of short-fluorinated polymer coatings. This work reports the fabrication of self-crosslinkable poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate-co-isocyanato ethyl methacrylate) nanocoating with good dynamic water repellency and high mechanical strength using a solvent-free initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) method. The employment of highly reactive isocyanate groups in the coating not only facilitated covalent binding with functional groups on the substrate surface, but also enabled self-crosslinking reactions in the presence of water vapor. Crosslinking immobilized the fluorinated chains on the surface, thus alleviating the contact angle hysteresis. The crosslinked network also significantly improved the mechanical strength of the coating. Without affecting fabric morphology, the coating enabled superhydrophobicity of different fabrics with water sliding angle as low as 3˚. Such superhydrophobicity was well maintained after various harsh durability tests, including sandpaper abrasion for up to 20,000 cm, ultrasonication and boiling for more than 12 h, etc. The achieved durability was attributed to the enhanced adhesion strength and excellent mechanical property of the coating. This work thus paves a novel way towards eco-friendly fabrication of durable superhydrophobic fabrics.

Abstract:Poor wear resistance and the use of toxic chemicals restrict the marketization of most traditional superhydrophobic surfaces. The present work provides a method to prepare a durable and non-toxic superhydrophobic coating on the surface of a cotton fabric. Thermal polymerization of spray drying was used to obtain uniform structure of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose (TOC) with nano silica (SiO2), for achieving well-combined rough sphere-like micron particles with hierarchical dimensions, which were then immersed into isocyanate (IPDI) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) respectively along with cotton fabric to construct a superhydrophobic coating on the fabric surface. The surface morphology, chemical structure, roughness and wettability of TOC-SiO2/PDMS surface were studied by adjusting the mass ratios of SiO2 to TOC. The optimal superhydrophobicity was obtained while the mass ratio of SiO2 to TOC was 1:1, displaying a water contact angle (CA) of 158.6°. The introduction of the intertwined TOC-SiO2 blends can construct a hierarchical micro-nano structure to enhance the hydrophobicity, simultaneously improve the mechanical durability of the superhydrophobic surface to prevent multiple peeling and friction damage, as well as outstanding chemical stability in a variety of harsh conditions.

Superhydrophobic lotus-leaf-like surface made from reduced graphene oxide through soft-lithographic duplication

Abstract:In this work, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was used as a material to fabricate superhydrophobic lotus-leaf-like surfaces through soft-lithographic duplication. In the process, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp was prepared by replica molding against the surfaces of fresh lotus leaves that functioned as masters. A dispersion of octadecylamine-modified reduced graphene oxide (ODA-RGO) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) was used as "ink". The lotus-leaf-like surfaces were fabricated by microcontact printing on the solid substrates. The results showed that due to the good processibility of the ODA-RGO dispersion, the printed layers display papillary micro/nano-structures with high fidelity to the surfaces of lotus leaves. The RGO-based lotus-leaf-like surfaces possess superhydrophobic characteristics with a water contact angle larger than 160 degrees and the contact angle hysteresis less than 5 degrees. Due to the excellent chemical stability of the RGO sheets, as-prepared surfaces show remarkable superhydrophobic stability. The lotus-leaf-like surfaces maintain the superhydrophobicity after heating treatment at 150 degrees C for 24 h or being exposed to corrosive solutions with different pH values for 12 h. The present findings prove that the RGO-based material is an ideal candidate for fabrication of environment-durable lotus-leaf-like surfaces, which can be expected to have applications in different areas.

Abstract:Abstract Super-hydrophobic fabrics have shown great potential during the last decade owing to their novel functions and enormous potential for diver’s applications. Surface textures and low surface energy coatings are the keys to high water repellency. However, the toxicity of nanomaterials, long perfluorinated side-chain polymers, and the fragile of micro/nano-texture lead to the super-hydrophobic surfaces are confined to small-scale uses. Thus, in this article, a stable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated super-hydrophobic poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabric (PDMS- g -PET) is manufactured via dip-plasma crosslinking without changing the wearing comfort. Benefiting from the special wrinkled structure of PDMS film, the coating is durable enough against physical abrasion and repeated washing damage, which is suffered from 100 cycles of washing or 500 abrasion cycles, and the water contact angle is still above 150°. This study promotes the way for the development of environmentally friendly, safe, and cost-efficient for designing durable superhydrophobic coatings for various practical applications.

Abstract:Durable and stable superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted a great deal of attention, where simplification of their preparation procedures is being explored. Fluorine-containing superhydrophobic surfaces typically exhibit excellent durability, but their use has been constrained by environmental hazards. The presented study reported the facile and low-cost approach for the fabrication of the durable superhydrophobic and UV protective cotton fabrics using milled fly ash and graphene nanoplatelet. The polydimethylsiloxane was used as a non-fluorinated low-surface energy material. The fly ash graphene composite particles were prepared by a ball milling process with mechanical activation on the surface, exhibiting excellent superhydrophobicity based on the apparent micro/nanopore structure of the surface. The coated cotton fabric surface exhibited a large water contact angle of 151.76° with a sliding angle of 9.9°, demonstrating excellent superhydrophobicity. The coated fabric surface also showed long-lasting durability in different environments, withstanding approximately 150 abrasions, 20 washings, 30 h of continuous UV exposure as well as acid and alkaline immersion. In addition, the UV shielding properties of the coated fabric were also found, with the modified fabric achieving a maximum UPF value of 177.6. The superhydrophobic coatings in this study are facile and fast to prepare with excellent durability in different environments and therefore show promising applications in functional finishing of textiles.

Abstract:Highly‐durable hydrophobic and adhesive coatings fabricated from Graphene‐grafted copolymer The demand for highly‐durable protective coatings for use in extreme environments is continually growing, however, poor durability and adhesion restricted their practical applications. Herein, we prepared a novel solution‐processable graphene‐based copolymer for fabricating highly‐durable protective coatings. The random‐structured copolymer GO‐g‐(PMMA‐co‐PMPS) was prepared by graphene‐based initiator (GO‐g‐Cl) initiating methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 3‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) via surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). The copolymers rendered the coatings with high transmittance (~95%), high hydrophobicity (water contact angles = 113.8 ± 2.13°), and strong adhesion (1.26–1.38 MPa). Tetrahydrofuran (THF)‐casted coating surface presented a higher Si content and greater surface roughness than that cast from dimethyl carbonate (DMC), yielding more hydrophobic coating than those cast from DMC. The coatings could be coated on different substrates (glass, aluminum, and sandstone); and besides, the structures and performance of the coatings remained unchanged, even exposing to acid/alkali, salt, and ultraviolet light irradiation. These high‐performance properties make the GO‐based copolymers ideal candidates for fabricating high‐durability protective coatings.

Feasible Fabrication of A Durable Superhydrophobic Coating on Polyester Fabrics for Oil-Water Separation

Abstract:A durable superhydrophobic coating on polyester fabrics has been fabricated by a simple solution immersion method in a solution consisting of a methyl MQ (M: mono-functional silicon oxygen unit R3SiO1/2, Q: tetra-functional silicon-oxygen unit SiO2) silicone resin and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles. After coating, the microstructured fibers were wrapped by compact hydrophobic nanoparticles that could lower the surface energy of the fibers. Therefore, the obtained fabric exhibited an excellent superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle of 156 and a sliding angle of 5. It is worth mentioning that the as-prepared fabric was proved to be able to withstand extreme environmental conditions such as mechanical abrasion, acidic and alkaline attack, and UV irradiation. The practical application of the modified fabric for oil-water separation was also demonstrated with a high separation efficiency above 99%. This feasible fabrication method paves the way for using the superhydrophobic fabric on a large scale.

Abstract:A novel robust and flexible superhydrophobic fluoropropyl methylsiloxane-dimethylsiloxane multi-block copolymer containing methacryloxyl group was synthesized via ring-opening polymerization, followed by macromolecular modification using 3-(trimethoxsilyl) propyl methacrylate (TMPMA). The propionyloxy group of MAc(PTFMS-alt-PDMS) could be crosslinked under UV irradiation, and its silicon methoxy group (-SiOCH3) was simultaneously condensed under moisture ambient, so as to acquire both higher crosslink density and adhesion strength duo to the dual-curing mode. After coating and curing MAc(PTFMS-alt-PDMS) on the surface of cotton fabric, a robust superhydrophobic elastomer coating was obtained. The elastomer exhibited excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength > 4.0 Mpa and an elongation at break > 300%. Moreover, the elastomer exhibited superhydrophobic properties (contact angle CA > 150 degrees) and good adhesion properties (shear strength > 3.7 Mpa) on various inorganic and organic substrates such as steel, glass, paper, and polyethylene (PE) films, with the assistant of the hydrophobic silica particles. The excellent flexibility and adhesive strength of the MAc(PTFMS-alt-PDMS) allowed a PE film to be bent at a large angle (120 degrees). The results obtained here demonstrate that this material has good application prospects where flexible superhydrophobic coatings are desired.

Abstract:The separation of oil and water can be effectively addressed through the application of superhydrophobic coatings. This method, known for enhancing the self-cleaning, anti-corrosive, and friction-reducing properties of materials, typically employs fluorine reagents to ensure the durability of the coating nanostructure. However, the use of fluorine reagents raises concerns related to health and the environment. We present a straightforward and efficient approach to fabricate a robust, fluorine-free superhydrophobic composite coating. The coating solution, comprised of hydrophobic silica nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is formed through sonication. The resulting superhydrophobic coating is effortlessly applied to silk fabric through immersion and subsequent drying/curing. micrograph confirms the creation of porous micro/nanostructures on the silk fabric's surface. Exceptional superhydrophobicity is demonstrated with a water contact angle (WCA) of 161 °±1.5 ° and a small sliding angle (SA) of 5 °±0.5 °. The coating's firmness, durability, and UV resistance are assessed through 20 cycles of sandpaper friction (load 200 g) and repeated tape peeling tests. Furthermore, the modified silk fabrics exhibit excellent capabilities in oil-water separation. This fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating, characterized by its robustness, environmental friendliness, and ease of manufacture, holds promising applications in the textile industry.
