Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of two novel symmetric triazine-ring opening ligands CA-MP (pyridine derivative)/CA-BOPhen (1,10-phenanthroline derivative) functionalized SiO2-P (P = Polymer) adsorbents for separation of Pd(II) from HNO3 solutions are presented. SEM, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, TGA and EDS spectroscopy characterization results showed that CA-MP and CA-BOPhen were successfully introduced into the pores of SiO2-P carrier via physical intermolecular interactions. CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P show high efficiency, high selectivity, extremely fast adsorption rates towards Pd(II) over 19 typical fission or corrosion products in HNO3 solution. The distribution coefficient Kd values of CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P are up to 206.5 and 205.7 cm3/g, respectively, within 10-15 min of contact time in 0.4 M HNO3. The adsorption capacities of them to Pd(II) were determined to be 0.36 mmol/g and 0.23 mmol/g, respectively. The fast adsorption rates and high selectivity of two adsorbents towards Pd(II) were related to the formation of the highly preorganized complex [Pd(NO3)(L)]+ (L = CA-MP or CA-BOPhen). These results demonstrate that CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P possess great potential for highly efficient removal of Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW).

Abstract:A series of Mg(Ca)Zr-doped acid-base bifunctional mesoporous silica were synthesized to study the impact of the one-step or two-step impregnation method on material structure. The two-step method seems to be a better way to synthesize metal-based functionalized catalyst and their catalytic performance is investigated using deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction as the probe reaction. The coexisting dual active sites and suitable designing routes endowed highly efficient (Conv. >99.6%, Sel. >99.8%) and robust stability (10 consecutive cycles) of these materials. The present process succeeded in preparing catalysts decorated with acid-base sites by doping acidic and alkali metal species rather than grafting organic groups.

Abstract:The effective removal of heavy metal 107Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW) is very valuable for reducing its hazardous and risk to public health and environment. For this purpose, a novel silica-bipyridine multidentate functional adsorbent was synthesized by vacuum infusing a new asymmetric N-donor ligand CA-MTBP (bipyridine derivative) into the macroporous SiO2-P support. SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA, XRD, FT-IR, 29Si solid-state NMR and XPS spectroscopy were utilized to systematically characterize the physicochemical properties of the adsorbent. The characterization results indicated that CA-MTBP was successfully immobilized onto the pores of SiO2-P by intermolecular interaction. Strong hydrogen-bonding interactions identified by single crystal structure of the ligand and 29Si NMR may play a key role in achieving this immobilization. TGA and TOC studies showed that CA-MTBP/SiO2-P had excellent thermal stability and highly HNO3 resistance. EDS and XPS investigations provided directly evidences for Pd(II) being selectively adsorbed onto the adsorbent. The adsorbent had excellent adsorption capability, fast adsorption kinetics and high selectivity for Pd(II) over other typical tested metals in HNO3 media.

BDIBTP/SiO2-P showed strong adsorption ability and high selectivity for Pd(II) over all the tested metals. The chromatographic partitioning of Pd(II) from a simulated HLW solution was conducted by BDIBTP/SiO2-P packed column. Pd(II) was effectively eluted with 0.2 M thiourea0.1 M HNO3. The others showed no adverse impact on separation of Pd(II). The results are beneficial to partitioning of minor actinides and Pd(II) together from HLW by BDIBTP/SiO2-P in the MPS process developed. Consideration of the complexation of BDIBTP for minor actinides MAs(III), the possibility and feasibility of effective partitioning of Pd(II) and MAs(III) simultaneously from a simulated HLW were discussed. A new concept process entitled MPS for the MA(III) and Pd(II) Separation has been proposed.

Pd(II) was effectively eluted with 0.2 M thiourea and separated from the others. The static-state adsorption of sortie typical alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals such as Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), and Ba(II) onto (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P was investigated. The effects of contact time, HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.3-7.0 M, and temperature on the adsorption were examined. (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P exhibited strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all tested elements, which showed weak or almost no adsorption except for Rb(I). The adsorption onto (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P of the tested metals in HNO3 medium was exothermic. The thermodynamic parameters for the adsorptions of Cs(I) and Rb(I) were determined. It was found that, in 3.0 M HNO3, application of the (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P polymeric composite in the partitioning of Cs(I), one of the heat generators, from highly active liquid waste in the SPEC (strontium/cesium partitioning from HLW by extraction chromatography) process is promising.

On the basis of the related results, the chromatographic separation of Pd(II) from 1.0 M HNO3 solution containing the tested metals was performed by BDIHTP/SiO2-P packed column. Pd(II) was effectively eluted with 0.2 M thiourea and separated from the others. The results are very beneficial to building an effective partitioning of minor actinides and Pd(II) together from HLW by the BDIHTP/SiO2-P materials.

Abstract:A new kind of silica-based adsorbent with high selectivity and efficient adsorption for palladium ion (Pd(II)) was synthesized in this study. A macrocyclic polyether isomer was modified for incorporation to the silica matrix as a ligand to realize the complexation between Pd(II) and the adsorbent. The adsorption of Pd(II) in HNO3 media was evaluated by both batch and column operations. Influences including acidity, contact time, initial metal concentration and elution conditions were detailed. From a practical viewpoint, the functionalized adsorbent was employed for the recovery of Pd(II) from the simulated high level liquid waste (HLLW) containing a large amount of interferences. Superior selectivity to Pd(II) as well as a recovery rate higher than 90% was obtained. A mechanism concerning the formation of complex ion-pair was proposed for the description of the Pd(II)-binding process. The macrocyclic ligand functionalized silica adsorbent possesses potential for the recovery of the palladium resource in radioactive liquid waste.
Novel Polyazamacrocyclic Receptor Impregnated Macroporous Polymeric Resins for Highly Efficient Capture of Palladium from Nitric Acid Media

Abstract:A novel composite resin C-8-Cyclen/CG-71M, with the specific binding ability to palladium ions in HNO3 solution, was developed by impregnating tetraoctyl-substituted 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (C-8 -Cyclen) receptor into the macroporous polymeric resins (Amberchrom CG-71M). The structure and morphology of obtained products were fully characterized. Study on the batch experiments revealed that C-8 -Cyclen/CG-71M resin exhibited rapid kinetics, favorable adsorption ability and high selectivity toward Pd(II) in a wide HNO3 concentration. The theoretical interpretation of the experimental data by employing kinetics models, Langmuir/Freundlich isotherms and thermodynamic equations were implemented to describe the adsorption behavior. The results showed that the adsorption process of Pd(II) by C-8 -Cyclen/CG-71M was comforted to a monolayer-coverage with the maximum adsorption capacity of 169.5 mg/g. Besides, the XPS analysis was performed to probe the underlying adsorption mechanism to Pd(II). A suggested mechanism involving the synergistic effect of four cyclic amines in C-8-Cyclen receptors was proposed to describe the interaction manner between Pd(II) and C-8-Cyclen/CG-71M. Furthermore, the resin was also applied to recovery Pd(II) from HCl media and similar results were obtained. Overall, due to the benign synthesis, efficient adsorption ability and facile operation, C-8-Cyclen/CG71M might be a promising resin material for Pd(II) selective capture from radioactive wastes, and other leaching solution of spent catalysts and electronic scraps.

Abstract:The development of economical and green technologies for the effective recovery of palladium has attracted worldwide attention in recent years. Magnetic separation involving the use of functional magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with superparamagnetic characteristics holds great promise in this respect. This study presents a novel class of core-shell structured superparamagnetic microspheres decorated with polyazamacrocyclic receptors, which show a highly-selective binding to Pd(II) in HNO3 media. The superparamagnetic microspheres possess a high saturation magnetization (53.8 emu g(-1)) and high adsorption capacity (q(max) approximate to 105.3 mu rnol g(-1)), affording efficient enrichment and fast separation (within 13 seconds) of palladium under an applied magnetic field. Adsorptive behavior was fully investigated combined with the corresponding theoretical analysis by using kinetic equations and Langmuir/Freundlich isotherm models. Moreover, the coordination mechanism of the polyazamacrocyclic receptors to Pd(II) was carefully examined based on high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FT-IR spectro-photometry. A suggested mechanism involving the synergistic effect of the cyclic amines and carboxyl arms of the polyazamacrocyclic receptors was proposed to describe the coordination manner, while explaining the selectivity to Pd(II) in HNO3 solutions. From a practical perspective, the Pd(II)-enriched microspheres could be readily regenerated for cycle use. We conclude that this kind of polyazamacro-cyclic receptor decorated superparamagnetic microsphere is of potential use for the effective recovery of Pd(II) as well as other precious metals.
Precise separation and efficient enrichment of palladium from wastewater by amino-functionalized silica adsorbent

Abstract:An amine-based functionalized mesoporous silica (SBA-15-TEPA) adsorbent constructed from mesoporous silica was produced to realize efficient and highly selective recovery of palladium from wastewater. SEM-EDS, TEM, TG-DSC, and N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherm were used to evaluate the as-prepared SBA-15-TEPA, and the results demonstrate that the material has a good open pore structure, a high loading rate, and a sizable specific surface area. The performance analysis demonstrates that SBA-15-TEPA exhibits excellent selectivity (Separation factor of palladium for impurity ions >5565) in a broad range of acidity and good repeatability (≥5) toward palladium, good repeatability is important for clean adsorption, with a maximal capacity of 94.92 mg Pd/g at pH = 1.5 at 315 K. 0.1 M thiourea - 0.1 M HNO 3 was capable of desorbing the adsorbed Pd(II) almost entirely. The mechanism of adsorption and desorption was investigated by FT-IR, XPS and DFT calculation, which proves that the coordination structure occurs mainly between N in the adsorbent and Pd(II) with NO 3 − participation for change balance, i.e., the strong chemical complexation between the electron pair acceptor Pd(II) and the electron pair donor N. The dynamic separation of Pd(II) by SBA-15-TEPA from simulated electroplating wastes was evaluated by column experiment, and nearly 100% recovery of Pd(II) was obtained with demonstrating outstanding enrichment coefficients (>104). SBA-15-TEPA met the requirements of dynamic adsorption experiments and successfully achieved the complete separation and high enrichment of palladium from waste liquids in high throughput. This result fills the gap where functionalized silicon-based materials could not be separated and enriched for palladium in column experiments and will also provide new ways to address palladium scarcity, environmental protection and ensure cleaner production.

Highly Selective Adsorption and Recovery of Palladium from Spent Catalyst Wastewater by 1,4,7,10-Tetraazacyclododecane-Modified Mesoporous Silica

Abstract:A new silicon-based adsorbent with good adsorption performance on Pd(II) was synthesized from mesoporous silica as a carrier and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane as a functional ligand. The batch method was used to investigate and evaluate the adsorption performance of the adsorbent on Pd(II) in HCl-HNO3 solution. Influencing factors such as the contact time, pH, temperature, initial Pd(II) concentration, and elution conditions on adsorption and elution were systematically investigated and optimized. Simultaneously, adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and adsorption isotherms were investigated. The results revealed that under optimal adsorption conditions, the recovery rate of the adsorbent to Pd(II) could reach 98.30–99.75% in a mixed solution, which was mostly unaffected by other impurity ions. After five adsorption–desorption cycles, the recovery rate of the adsorbent to Pd(II) remained more than 93%. Pd(II) adsorption by the adsorbent was rapid within 30 min, and the recovery rate could reach 85%. In combination with density functional theory calculations, an adequate recovery mechanism was proposed to describe the selective adsorption and desorption process of Pd(II), in which the chemical adsorption dominated. As a result, this material can adsorb and recover Pd(II) with high selectivity, a rapid adsorption rate, good stability, and reusability, making it ideal for recovering waste palladium resources under acidic conditions.

Abstract:Palladium recovery in HNO3-containing radioactive waste is of great value due to its considerable amount and benign radioactivity level. In this study, a new calixcrown receptor decorated with amino ligands (soft N donors) was synthesized for the selective extraction of Pd(II) in HNO3 media. A high distribution ratio (D) of 278.6 was obtained within 10min in solvent extraction. Moreover, the calixcrown receptor was covalently grafted to micro-sized silica particles to obtain a novel solid phase extraction (SPE) material (labeled as ACGSi). Detailed batch and column experiments revealed that the ACGSi material had fast kinetics and favorable adsorption capacity towards Pd(II) in HNO3 solutions. Parameters influencing the adsorption ability such as contact time, acidity and initial metal concentration were fully evaluated. Kinetic equations (pseudo-first/second-order) and adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir and Freundlich models) were employed to fit the experimental data for inspecting the adsorption mechanism. On this basis, a facile chromatographic process was proposed for the selective enrichment and recovery of palladium in simulated high level liquid waste (HLLW). A recovery rate of 99.3% was obtained. New insights into the uranium adsorption behavior of mesoporous SBA-15 silicas decorated with alkylphosphine oxide ligands

Abstract:Alkylphosphine oxides functionalized mesoporous silicas (SBAVx-P(O)Pr-2) were prepared by a two-step process involving: (1) co-condensation synthesis of vinyl-containing mesoporous silica (SBAVx), and (2) addition reaction with secondary n-propylphosphine oxide to anchor the alkylphosphine oxide ligands. The functionalized mesoporous silicas exhibited ordered mesoporosity, high specific surface area, and narrow pore size distribution. Due to the strong binding ability of the alkylphosphine oxide ligands and the surface silanol groups, the mesoporous silicas showed effective adsorption toward uranyl ions in HNO3 solutions with a wide-range of concentrations. The existence of numerous ordered meso-pores in the silica matrix facilitated the mass transfer, resulting in fast adsorption kinetics with an equilibrium obtained in similar to 30 minutes. The relationship between structural parameters (ligand density, pore and network architecture) and uranyl adsorption performance was studied. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism associated with the variable role of the alkylphosphine oxide ligands and silanol groups in different acidic solutions was discussed. Besides, cycling experiments by column operation revealed that the mesoporous silicas had a reliable performance and could be conveniently recovered by elution with K2CO3 solutions. This paper highlights the potential application of mesoporous silicas functionalized with alkylphosphine oxide ligands as promising candidates for the preconcentration and adsorption of uranium from acidic or neutral aqueous solutions.
Highly Selective Adsorption of Pt2+ and Pd2+ Using Thiol-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica

Abstract:A noble metal ion (Pt2+ and Pd2+) adsorbent with uniform mesopore channels was prepared by grafting a thiol functional group, (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS), onto ordered mesoporous silica, SBA-15. Results show that the ordered mesostructure of SBA-15 was retained after modification and the thiol functional group was immobilized mainly inside the mesopore channel, as evidenced by Brunauer−Emmett−Teller surface area, small-angle X-ray scattering, Fourier transform infrared, and elemental analyses. The thiolated mesoporous silica exhibited a highly selectively adsorptive capability for noble metal ions such as Pd2+ and Pt2+, while the binding capability for other metal ions (Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+) both in the presence of equimolarity and at 10 times excess conditions was greatly decreased. For example these micelles occluded in the as-synthesized mesoporous silica such as MCM-41 are the unique resource, since they are distributed in the spoke-like configuration to form numerous sub-nanometer gaps between them and the silica walls, and these inherent chemical and geometric properties are very difficult, if not impossible, to be duplicated by other methods [3]. For this reason, it is necessary to utilize these template micelles orientated inside the channel. We had reported a simple approach previously: the as-made ordered mesoporous materials with template occluded in the pores were utilized as the specific support and manually ground with guest precursor salts such as magnesium acetate. And this mixture was then calcined to form high dispersion of guest species like MgO, performing the guest dispersion and the template removal at one step [4]. As the consequence, a solvent-free technique was employed for fast modification of mesoporous materials. Copper, chromium and iron oxide species could be highly dispersed in SBA-15 by manually grinding the corresponding precursor salts and the host, followed by calcinations for the first time. This method is more effective to spontaneously disperse oxide species onto SBA-15 than impregnation. Besides, Cr(VI) species dominate in the mixing sample while Cr(III) species dominate in the impregnation one. In the temperature programmed surface reaction of nitrosamines, the sample prepared by solvent-free method showed a higher catalytic activity than the impregnation one [5]. This method finely exploits the weak interaction of inorganic-organic hybrids to achieve spontaneous infiltration of guest species in the occluded pores of the as-made mesoporous materials so as to be a powerful means to fabricate guest-host composites. More importantly, this method hints a possibility to take advantage of the confined space between silica wall and template aggregates [4,6].

Abstract:In this work, we described a proof-of-concept method to promote the activity and selectivity of Pd nanoparticles for heterogeneous catalysis (exemplified by C–C coupling reactions) by using acid sites within a zeolite framework. The Pd nanoparticles were encapsulated inside the crystalline walls of mesoporous H-ZSM-5 leading to hybrid samples (denoted as Pd@mZ-x-H) with controlled number of acid sites. A linear relationship between the number of acid sites of the zeolite nanocrystals and the catalytic activities of the Pd nanoparticles in organic reactions was established. Moreover, the shape-dependent selectivity of Pd@mZ-x-H was not sacrificed when the final activity was enhanced.
