Abstract:For a recent discovered super-luminous supernova (SLSN): SN 2015bn, some significant undulations appear in its light curve after the first peak, while the underlying profile of the light curve can well be explained with a continuous energy supply to the supernova from the central engine (probably, a spinning-down neutron star). We propose that these unusual undulations are probably caused by some intermittent pulse energy supplies, which indicate that some energetic flare activities have happened on the central engine of this SLSN. In comparison, a great number of post-burst flares have been widely discovered in the X-ray afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It is further found that the empirical correlation between the luminosities and timescales of the GRB flares can basically be satisfied by the SLSN flares discovered here. Such a similarity and connection between the engine properties of SLSNe and GRBs suggest that these two very different phenomena could just be two branches from a common astrophysical origin.
