Abstract:Hetero-structured TiO2 nanotree arrays on flurine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates were deposited by a two-step hydrothermal method, CdS/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (CdS/ZnS QDs) were deposited by a successive ionic layer absorption and reaction (SILAR) process. The TiO2 nanotree array is composed of a trunk-branch structure where the trunk is rutile TiO2 nanorod array and the branch is anatase TiO2 nanosheets standing on the trunk. Morphology, optical properties and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances were investigated in detail. After the deposition of CdS/ZnS QDs, TiO2 nanotree array photoanode shows much better PEC performance compared to TiO2 nanorod array photoanode that sensitized nanotree array show a higher photocurrent desity (1.5 mA/cm(2)) at 1.0 V and almost 2-fold current density (0.29 mA/cm(2)) than sensitized nanorod array (1.0 mA/cm(2) and 0.15 mA/cm(2)) in the measurement of linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and transient photocurrent, respectively. This result is due to the enlarged surface specific area for more quantum dots loading, and also due to the rutile/anatase junctions formed on the boundary of trunks and branches, leading to an effective charge separating and transporting. It suggests that the hetero-structured TiO2 nanotree array is very promising to be applied in highly efficient photoanodes for energy devices. (C) 2016 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:Inorganic/organic nanohybrids composed of arrayed TiO2 nanotubes (TiNTs)/porphyrin nanoparticles (NPs) have been fabricated via a wet chemical approach. The inorganic component, particularly the arrayed one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures, provides high charge-carrier mobility and rapid charge transport. The organic component exhibits extensive visible light absorption and good solution processability. Additionally, the geometric restraint by supramolecular assembly renders an improved photostability. A combination of these two components could thus allow for an efficient solar energy conversion. In this work, a colloid of porphyrin NPs prepared by a solvent exchange method is coated on anodic TiNTs by means of a dip-coating treatment to form inorganic/organic hybrids. The hybrids exhibit an improvement on solar absorption and a significant enhancement on photocurrent generation at a small bias compared with individual component. Herein, the inorganic/organic nanohybrids are proved to be excellent photoanodes highly responsive to visible light and thus pave a way to discover new inorganic/organic assemblies for high-performance optoelectronic applications, as well as for device integration.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical sensing represents a unique means for chemical and biological detection, with foci of optimizing semiconductor composition and electronic structures, surface functionalization layers, and chemical detection methods. Here, we have briefly discussed our recent developments of TiO 2 nanowire‐based photoelectrochemical sensing, with particular emphasis on three main detection mechanisms and corresponding examples. We have also demonstrated the use of the photoelectrochemical sensing of real‐time molecular reaction kinetic measurements, as well as direct interfacing of living cells and probing of cellular functions.
A Visible Light Responsive Photocatalytic Fuel Cell Using BiOBr/TiO2 Nanotube Array Photoanode for Simultaneous Wastewater Treatment and Electricity Generation

Abstract:BiOBr/TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) photoanodes were prepared via a two-step method. The microstructure and performance were investigated. BiOBr/TNAs with 15 deposition cycles showed the highest activity and thus worked as photoanode to construct a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC). Compared with a single photoanode, BiOBr/TNAs-Pt PFC improved photocatalytic activity due to better separation of photoexcited holes and electrons, and exhibited superior simultaneous electricity generation ability. Besides, the working mechanism of PFC was illustrated to clarify the photocatalytic reactions in detail.

Abstract:Photosystem I (PSI) from oxygenic photosynthetic organisms is an attractive sensitizer for nano-biohybrid solar cells as it has a combined light-harvesting and reaction center in one protein complex and operates at a quantum yield close to one in biological systems. Using a linker-free deposition technique enabled by an electrospray system, PSI was coupled to 1-D nanostructured titanium dioxide thin films to fabricate an electrode for a photoelectrochemical cell. After deposition, the surfactant in the PSI aggregate was dissolved in the surfactant-free electrolyte, ensuring that partly hydrophobic PSI was not resuspended and stayed in contact with titanium dioxide. A maximum current density of 4.15 mA cm(-2) was measured after 10 min of electrospray deposition, and this is the highest current density reported so far for PSI-based photoelectrochemical cells. The high current is attributed to 1D nanostructure of titanium dioxide and orientation of the PSI onto the surface, which allows easy transfer of electrons.

Abstract:A biohybrid photoanode is constructed by integrating photosystem II with doped conducting polymer nanowires that are synthesized by template‐directed electrochemical deposition. Interestingly, at the same applied bias potential ranging from 0 to 0.5 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE), this hybrid photoanode shows a higher photocurrent than that of pure photosystem II coated on a bare indium tin oxide (ITO) surface. Particularly, the photocurrent for the integrated photoanode above is enhanced about 39.0‐fold with increased stability (0.25 V vs SCE). Such assembled system combining natural photoactive protein with artificial low‐cost conducting polymer shows great potential for advanced solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Solar-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen is an important solution to the problem of energy shortage and environmental pollution. The photolysis of water to produce hydrogen requires highly efficient and stable photocatalysts, and the anode used as catalyst for oxygen evolution is a bottleneck in this process. In this paper, the a-TNTAs/Ni2P composite photo-anode was constructed by electrodeposition to anchor the Ni2P co-catalyst for oxygen evolution at the active site of TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs). The a-TNTAs/Ni2P delivered excellent oxygen evolution at a photocurrent density of 1.058 mA cm-2, an improvement of 2.78 times, 13.2 times, and 15.8 times over a-TNTAs, TNTAs/Ni2P, and TNTAs photo-anodes, respectively. The Mott-Schottky curve showed that Ni2P as co-catalyst for oxygen evolution accelerated the rates of separation and transfer of the photogenerated electrons. This research provides a simple and efficient method to promote the OER performance of optical semiconductors.

Abstract:Photosynthetic biocatalysts are emerging as a new class of materials, with their sophisticated and intricate structure, which promise improved remarkable quantum efficiency compared to conventional inorganic materials in artificial photosynthesis. To break the limitation of efficiency, the construction of bioconjugated photo-electrochemical conversion devices has garnered substantial interest and stood at the frontier of the multidisciplinary research between biology and chemistry. Herein, a biohybrid photoanode of a photosynthetic membrane protein (Photosystem II (PS II)), extracted from fresh spinach entrapped on mesoporous WO film, is fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide. The PS II membrane proteins are observed to communicate with the WO electrode in the absence of any soluble redox mediators and sacrificial reagents under the visible light of the solar spectrum, even to 700 nm. The biohybrid electrode undergoes electron transfer and generates a significantly enhanced photocurrent compared to previously reported PS II-based photoanodes with carbon nanostructures or other semiconductor substrates for solar water oxidation. The maximum incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency reaches 15.24% at 400 nm in the visible light region. This work provides some insights and possibilities into the efficient assembly of a future solar energy conversion system based on visible-light-responsive semiconductors and photosynthetic proteins.
Enhancing the photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2 photoanode by employing carbon nanoparticles as electron reservoirs and photothermal materials

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is regarded as a potential technique for converting solar energy. However, the fast charge recombination and slow water oxidation kinetics significantly have hindered its practical application. It is found that an elevation in operation temperature can activate the charge transport in the photoanodes. Here, a strategy was performed that carbon nanoparticles were employed to TiO2 nanorods, acting as electron reservoirs as well as photothermal materials. More specifically, a record photocurrent density of 1.62 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE has been achieved, accompanied by a high charge separation efficiency of 96% and a long-term durability for 8 h. The detailed experimental results reveal that under NIR light irradiation, the synergistic effect between electron storage and temperature rise leads to accelerated charge transport in the bulk and water oxidation kinetics on the surface. This research offers a new perspective on how to boost the PEC performance of photoelectrodes.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous architectures are expected to perform well in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to their high specific surface area as well as favourable porous properties and interconnections. In this work, we demonstrated the facile fabrication of 3D interconnected nanoporous N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2 network) by annealing the anodized 3D interconnected nanoporous TiO2 (TiO2 network) in ammonia atmosphere. The obtained N-TiO2 network exhibited broadened light absorption, and abundant, interconnected pores for improving charge separation, which was supported by the reduced charge transfer resistance. With these merits, a remarkably high photocurrent density at 1.23V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) was realized for the N-TiO2 network without any co-catalysts or sacrificial reagents, and the photostability can be assured after long term illumination. In view of its simplicity and efficiency, this structure promises for perspective PEC applications.

Abstract:A heterojunction CdS/TiO2 photoelectrode is prepared by filling CdS nanoparticles into one-dimensional TiO2 nanotube (NT) array films. The self-assembled TiO2 NTs are fabricated by an anodization method and sensitized with CdS nanoparticles by the close space sublimation technique. The photoactivity of the as-prepared photoelectrodes was measured in a photoelectrochemical solar cell. Under AM 1.5G illumination, a 5.6 mA/cm(2) short-circuit Current density is achieved using the CdS modified photoelectrode, which represents an enhancement by a factor of 36 in photoactivity compared with that of the plain TiO2 NT array film.

Abstract:The TiO2/SrTiO3 combined nanotube structure was obtained by the anodization and hydrothermal process. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, etc. The behavior of photoelectrochemical activity in the combined films and pure TiO2 nanotube arrays had been investigated through photo-to-current conversion efficiency measurement. Compared with bare TiO2 electrodes, SrTiO3 modified TiO2 electrodes presented high charge transfer speed, high surface dominant photoelectrochemical response and photo-to-current conversion efficiency. The overall energy conversion efficiency was increased from 4.1% to 5.6% under the illumination of white light of 100mW/cm2 by using N719 dye. It demonstrates that the formation of a composite structure on surface of TiO2 nanotubes plays an important role in the kinetic behaviors (like charge separation efficiency and electron transport rate) of the as-prepared DSSC cells. The mechanism for the enhancement of the photoelectrochemical activity is discussed.

Abstract:A new kind of bio-nanocomposite photoelectrode was fabricated through direct immobilization of the bacterial photosynthetic reaction center (RC) proteins on a nanocrystalline TiO2 matrix prepared by anodic electrodeposition. The near-infrared (NIR)visible absorption and fluorescence emission spectra displayed that structure and activity of the RC remained unaltered on the nano-TiO2 film surface. High efficient light-harvesting of the NIR light energy by RC contributed to the distinct enhancement of the photoelectric conversion on such nanoporous matrix, which would provide a new strategy to develop versatile biomimic energy convertors or photoelectric sensors.

Abstract:Charge separation and transfer are central issues dominating the underlying energy conversion mechanisms of photosynthetic systems. Here, inspired by nature, a multi‐interfacial engineering strategy for constructing a strongly coupled interactive transmission network for stable and efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production is proposed. A multivariate all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme with intimate electron interactions is formed through strong bridging bonds due to Ti orbit modulation and stacking hybridization between hybrids. The electron couple structure realizes an efficient carrier directional separation and transfer, enabling the charge separation efficiency to be enhanced dramatically by 7.2 times. Furthermore, the resulting material provides a highly stable photocatalytic hydrogen activity, up to 15.29 mmol h−1 g−1, 18.8 times higher than pure carbon nitride, surpassing many reported photocatalysts. This work represents a significant development and helps develop a sound foundation for future design principles in accelerating charge transfer. The reported bio‐inspired TiO2/Ti3C2/carbon nitride nanosheets multicomponent Z‐scheme system designed and constructed using interface engineering principles represents a significant development that helps develop a sound foundation for a future design concept for accelerating Z‐scheme charge transfer efficiency. The Z‐scheme network with strong electron coupling interaction shows high and stable photocatalytic performance for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photoelectrodes that offer high light absorption and efficient charge separation hold great promise in photocatalysis. In this study, a simple and controllable method for fabricating hierarchical TiO2−x photoelectrodes by coupling femtosecond laser processing and anodization is proposed. The fabricated photoelectrodes consist of microcones (approximately 150,000 per square centimetre) covered with large quantities of nanotubes. The hierarchical structures possess significant light-trapping effect, meanwhile, oxygen vacancies were simultaneously introduced through laser processing with anodization, which can be attributed to the fs-laser mediated lattice phase transformation (polycrystalline and amorphous layer) of titanium. With the synergistic effects of hierarchical structures and oxygen vacancies, the hierarchical TiO2−x electrode exhibited a narrowed bandgap (1.95 eV) and remarkable light absorption. Especially under visible light, this photoelectrode demonstrated 15-fold photocurrent enhancement and double the usual photodegradation rate of methylene blue. This morphological control and defect introduction method may be extensively used in efficient solar utilisation.

Abstract:Photoactive artificial nanocatalysts that mimic natural photoenergy systems can yield clean and renewable energy. However, their poor photoabsorption capability and disfavored photogenic electron-hole recombination hinder their production. Herein, we designed two nanocatalysts with various microstructures by combining the tailored self-assembly of the meso-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl) porphine photosensitizer with the growth of titanium dioxide (TiO2). The porphyrin photoabsorption antenna efficiently extended the absorption range of TiO2 in the visible region, while anatase TiO2 promoted the efficient electron-hole separation of porphyrin. The photo-induced electrons were transferred to the surface of the Pt co-catalyst for the generation of hydrogen via water splitting, and the hole was utilized for the decomposition of methyl orange dye. The hybrid structure showed greatly increased photocatalytic performance compared to the core@shell structure due to massive active sites and increased photo-generated electron output. This controlled assembly regulation provides a new approach for the fabrication of advanced, structure-dependent photocatalysts.

Abstract:Organic/inorganic heterojunction photoanodes are appealing for making concurrent use of the highly photoactive organic semiconductors, and the efficient dielectric screening provided by their inorganic counterparts. In the present work, organic/inorganic nanotube heterojunction arrays composed of TiO2 nanotube arrays and a semiconducting N,N-(dicyclohexyl) perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDi) layer were fabricated for photoelectrochemical water splitting. In this arrayed architecture, a PDi layer with a tunable thickness was coated on anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays by physical vapor deposition, which is advantageous for the formation of a uniform layer and an adequate interface contact between PDi and TiO2. The obtained PDi/TiO2 junction exhibited broadened visible light absorption, and an effective interface for enhanced photogenerated electron-hole separation, which is supported by the reduced charge transfer resistance and prolonged excitation lifetime via impedance spectroscopy analysis and fluorescence emission decay investigations. Consequently, such a heterojunction photoanode was photoresponsive to a wide visible light region of 400-600 nm, and thus demonstrated a highly enhanced photocurrent density at 1.23 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode. Additionally, the durability of such a photoanode can be guaranteed after long-time illumination because of the geometrical restraint imposed by the PDi aggregates. These results pave the way to discover new organic/inorganic assemblies for high-performance photoelectric applications and device integration.
