Abstract:The chemical degradation of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes was studied both in-situ (during fuel cell operation) and ex-situ (by Fenton's test). During fuel cell operation, the degradation rate was quantified by monitoring the rate of fluoride release. The rate of degradation was found to be strongly dependent on operating conditions. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) were used to identify degradation products other than fluoride generated during fuel cell operation. Strong similarities were found between the organic fragments generated from both the in-situ (fuel cell operation) and ex-situ (Fenton's test) degradation processes. The chemical structure of the fragment is consistent with that of the side chain on the PFSA ionomer used in the experiments. The implications of the existence of this product for the chemical degradation mechanism are discussed.

Abstract:The durability of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) is a critical factor in the future commercial success of hydrogen fuel cell technology. Presently, the favored PEM material is made of perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers. Current efforts to improve PFSA durability are hindered by the lack of thorough understanding of the chemical mechanism by which PFSA degrades. In this paper, the PFSA chemical degradation mechanism is reviewed which incorporates two possibilities for initiation along the PFSA polymer: weak polymer end groups versus side chain cleavage. A kinetic model is developed which quantitatively distinguishes between these two degradation initiation mechanisms. Experimentally, degraded PFSA samples were obtained under both fuel cell and ex situ Fenton's test conditions, and infrared spectroscopy (IR) was used to measure the relative concentration of carboxylic acid end groups on the degraded polymer chains. The IR data, coupled with the corresponding ionomer fluoride loss data, validate the kinetic model and allow calculation of the kinetic constants which distinguish between the two degradation initiation mechanisms. Theoretical case studies are also included to illustrate the usefulness of the kinetic model.
Structure-Dependent Fenton Reactivity and Degradation Pathway of Methylimidazolium Ionic Liquids

Abstract:Short-chain imidazolium-based ionic liquids (IBILs) substituted by methyl groups are highly water-soluble and have the potential risk of entering the water environment with wastewater. In this work, the structure-dependent Fenton reactivity and degradation pathway of methylimidazolium ionic liquids were investigated, including the influence of the proton activity and structural symmetry of IBILs. The chemical reactivity of specific sites (atoms) was quantitatively predicted by a condensed Fukui function (f(A)(-)). Aprotic IBILs ([DMIM][BF4] and [TMIM][BF4]) were more resistant to the (OH)-O-center dot attacks than protic IBILs ([HHIM][BF4] and [HMIM][BF4]) because deprotonation reduced the f(A)(-) value of the attack sites. Structural symmetry increased the initial rate of the total organic carbon (TOC) reduction (k(0,TOC)) due to the existence of symmetric Fenton reaction sites. Trimethyl-substituted [TMIM][BF4] showed the lowest TOC removal efficiency and k(0,TOC) presumably because the C2-methyl substitution greatly weakened the f(A)(-) value of C2. The plausible mineralization pathways were proposed on the basis of gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry analyses. The more methyl substitution resulted in weaker Fenton reactivity but more oxidation pathways. For [TMIM][BF4], C2-methyl reduced the Fenton reactivity of the imidazolium skeleton but increased the oxidation opportunities of dual N-methyls.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has raised significant health concerns due to its high ecotoxicological risks and difficulties in removal by conventional water treatment process. Previous studies have demonstrated that photocatalytic techniques exhibit great potential in PFOA removal. However, the underlying mechanism of the degradation process has not been fully understood, particularly the contribution of the facet effects of catalysts. In this study, a combination of experiments and first-principles calculations were conducted to shed light on the facet-dependence of the interfacial interactions and oxidation during the PFOA degradation process. We proved that the interfacial interaction was essential in initiating the hole-dominated degradation process, and the {110}R3̅c facet of hexagonal In2O3 features the strongest interaction with PFOA. The overall defluorination rate was mainly controlled by the hole-dominated oxidation processes under UV irradiation, which were further attributed to the electronic structures and reaction site distributions of different In2O3 surfaces. This study provides molecular-level insights on the facet-dependent PFOA catalytic degradation process, which can guide the rational design of photocatalysts to achieve superior decontamination efficiency.

Abstract:Degradation of MTBE in aqueous solution by UV/Fenton was investigated.It was found that under the conditions of 10 mmol/L H_(2)O_(2),2 mmol/L Fe~(2+),pH 2.4 and room temperature,and initial 1 mmol/L MTBE in aqueous solution,99% of MTBE could be reduced within 30min,with a two-stage reaction,i.e.,firstly decomposed rapidly due to UV/Fe~(2+)/H_(2)O_(2) reactionsand then somewhat less rapidly because of the sharp decrease of Fe~(2+).

Abstract:The degradation of selected chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) exemplified by trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,1-dichloroethylene (DCE), and chloroform (CF) was investigated with Fenton oxidation process. The results indicate that the degradation rate was primarily affected by the chemical structures of organic contaminants. Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) preferred to attack the organic contaminants with an electron-rich structure such as chlorinated alkenes (i.e., TCE and DCE). The dosing mode of Fenton’s reagent, particularly of Fe 2+ , significantly affected the degradation efficiency of studied organic compound. A new “time-squared” kinetic model, C = C o exp(− k obs t 2 ), was developed to express the degradation kinetics of selected CAHs. This model was applicable to TCE and DCE, but inapplicable to CF due to their varied reaction rate constants towards ?OH. Chloride release was monitored to examine the degree of dechlorination during the oxidation of selected CAHs. TCE was more easily dechlorinated thanDCE and CF.Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) was identified as the major reaction intermediate in the oxidation of TCE, which could be completely removed as the reaction proceeded. No reaction intermediates or byproducts were identified in the oxidation of DCE and CF. Based on the identified intermediate, the reaction mechanism of TCE with Fenton’s reagent was proposed.

Abstract:1, 1-Dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is the principal component of liquid propellant, which has been classified as a third class toxicant. The experimental study of oxidation of UDMH aqueous solution using UV-Fenton process was undertaken. In this study, two main UDMH degradation conditions which were initial H2O2. concentration and initial Fe2+ concentration were investigated. The experiment results showed that 4758.3mg/L H2O2 and 1296.9 mg/L FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O are the optimal experiment conditions for the UDMH UV-Fenton degradation process, and tinder this conditions the UDMH degradation raw can reach 99.6%. The kinetic model of UDMH degradation rate was established in this study, which were under the reaction conditions of solely ultraviolet and of UV-Fenton respectively,

Abstract:N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF)is a universal organic solvent in industry,while it is toxic and non-biodegradable.In this paper,Fenton oxidation was used to treat model DMF wastewater and the influence of pH,reaction time,dose of oxidation agent,as well as the effect of inorganic anions Cl- and SO42- were investigated.The experimental results showed that the optimum conditions with effluent COD<100 mg/L were as follows:when the concentration of DMF was 1 g/L,the dosage of 30% H2 O2 was 40 mL/L,pH=2.0,n(H2 O2 ):n(Fe2+)=3:1,reacting time is 2.5 h.Meanwhile,Cl- had a strong inhibition effect on Fenton oxidation:the COD of effluent increased from 90 mg/L to 250 mg/L with 1 g/L Cl-.The effect of SO42- on the reaction was very small:with a concentration higher than 10 g/L,it could accelerate the reaction to some extent.

Abstract:In recent years, ionic liquids (ILs) have captured much attention of environment researchers due to their widespread use and potential biotoxicity. In this work, Fe 0 activated persulfate (Fe 0 /PS) oxidation system was systematically examined for its performance to degrade 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium (HMIm), a typical imidazole-based ILs, with the study of degradation kinetics, pathways, mechanisms and ecotoxicity. Under the conditions of pH 3.0, Fe 0 /PS/HMIm molar ratio of 200:50:1, the removal efficiency of HMIm reached 93.5 % within 10 min. With the increased of the cycle index, the degradation performance became better. The degradation of HMIm was inhibited to some extent in real waters, where the presence of inorganic ions may competitively consume or suppress the production of active species. As evidenced by the results of EPR technology and quenching experiments, • OH, SO 4 •− , 1 O 2 , and O 2 •− were generated and involved in the degradation of HMIm, with the corresponding contribution of 9.4 %, 71.4 %, 14.0 %, and 28.7 %, respectively. Twenty-seven oxidation products were identified by HPLC-QTOF-MS analysis, and side chain breakage, hydroxylation, 1 O 2 initiated oxidation and sulfate addition were the main reactions leading to the four primary products. Based on the frontier molecular orbital calculation, the imidazole ring of HMIm was determined as the main active sites for free radical attack. According to ECOSAR assessment, the products in the four oxidation pathways showed a decreased toxicity than HMIm. This study demonstrates that Fe 0 /PS is an effective and environmentally friendly method to eliminate HMIm, which also provide some technical reference for the treatment of ILs polluted waters.

Abstract:Tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), a common organophosphate flame retardant, was frequently detected in the environment and posed threats to human health. In this work, the main component of ilmenite FeTiO3 was synthesized by the sol-gel method and employed as the catalyst for the degradation of TCPP by activating persulfate (PS) under UV irradiation. The degradation processes were fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic. The kobs value in UV/FeTiO3/PS system was up to 0.0056 min-1 and much higher than that in UV/PS (0.0014 min-1), UV/FeTiO3 (0.0012 min-1) and FeTiO3/PS (0.0016 min-1) systems, demonstrating a distinct synergistic effect in TCPP removal. The degradation efficiency of TCPP increased with the increase of UV intensity, PS concentration and catalyst dosage, and with the decrease of pH. By quenching experiment and EPR analysis, ·OH was confirmed to be the dominant radical in the reaction of the UV/FeTiO3/PS system. The possible degradation pathways of TCPP were dechlorination, dealkylation, and further oxidation of alkyl groups based on the theoretical calculation of frontier molecular orbits. The toxicity of degradation intermediates evaluated by luminescence inhibition rate of photoluminescence was higher than TCPP. Thus, TCPP can be degraded in the UV/FeTiO3/PS system effectively at the premise of introducing controlling measures to reduce the toxicity of degradation intermediates.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: A mesoporous alumina supported nanosized Fe2O3 was prepared through an original synthesis procedure and used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Fenton process degradation of the model azo dye C. I. Acid Orange 7 enhanced by ultrasound irradiation (US/Fe2O3-Al2O3-meso/H2O2 system). The effect of various operating conditions was investigated, namely hydrogen peroxide concentration, initial pH, ultrasonic power and catalyst loading.RESULTS: The results indicated that the degradation of C. I. Acid Orange 7 followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. There exists an optimal hydrogen peroxide concentration, initial pH, ultrasonic power and catalyst loading for decolorization. The aggregate size of the spent catalyst was reduced after dispersion in water by ultrasonic irradiation. A very low level of iron leaching was observed ranging from <0.1 to 0.23 mg L-1. The intermediate products of C. I. Acid Orange 7 degradation were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).CONCLUSION: The optimal conditions for efficient C. I. Acid Orange 7 degradation were pH close to 3, hydrogen peroxide concentration 4 mmol L-1, catalyst loading 0.3 g L-1, and ultrasonic power 80 W. (C) 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:With the aim to evaluate the effect of temperature, 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (CMP) degradation by Fenton's reagent was investigated at 25 and 70 degrees C under the following initial conditions: [CMP]0 = 10 mM, [Fe2+]0 = 0.5 mM; ([H2O2]0/[CMP]0) = 80, pH0 = 3. The results indicated that CMP degradation was strongly influenced by temperature. In fact, the maximum TOC removal, achieved after ca. 24h, was by far greater at 70 degrees C (85%) than at 25 degrees C (36%). The same happened for organic chlorine (TOX) conversion into inorganic chloride, i.e. 100%, after 3 h at 70 degrees C, and 87%, after 27 h at 25 degrees C. As the recorded trends of CMP removal and chloride formation were basically the same, hydroxy substitution (ipso-substitution) was hypothesised as one likely mechanism of CMP degradation. The higher level of mineralization recorded at 70 degrees C was ascribed to: (i) a greater *OH concentration; (ii) a consequently greater extent of CMP oxidation to organic acids; (iii) a higher decarboxylation rate of such acids. An interesting consequence of such extended organic acids decarboxylation was a pH increase up to 8 that, in turn, caused, in the treated mixture, the decomposition of excess H2O2 as well as the precipitation of iron ions. These two latter outcomes are technologically important considering that usually, before discharging Fenton treated wastewater, specific polishing steps are required just to remove iron ions, decompose excess hydrogen peroxide and neutralise the pH.

Abstract:Chemical reactivity, kinetics, degradation pathways and mechanisms, and ecotoxicity of the oxidation of 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium bromide ([VEIm]Br), the most common alternative to organic solvents, by Fe(VI) (HFeO4-) were studied by lab experiments and theoretical calculations. Results show that Fe(VI) can efficiently remove VEIm through the dioxygen transfer-hydrolysis mechanism, which has not been reported yet. The reactivity of VEIm toward Fe(VI) mainly depends on the double bonds in the side chain of VEIm. The second-order rate constant for VEIm was 629.45 M-1 s(-1) at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C. Typical water constituents, except for SO32-, Cl-, and Cu2+, had no obvious effects on the oxidation. The oxidation products were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, which proves that there were interactions between the oxidation intermediates of the anion and cation parts of [VEIm]Br during the degradation process. The structures of related products and oxidation mechanisms were further rationalized by theoretical calculations. The ecotoxicity of products from the three oxidation pathways all showed a trend of increase after the initial decrease. We hope that the findings of this work can give researchers some new inspirations on Fe(VI) degradation of other alkene-containing contaminants.

Abstract:Degradation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in aqueous solution by Fenton's reagent (Fe2+ and H2O2) was investigated. Effects of reaction conditions on the oxidation efficiency of MTBE by Fenton's reagent were examined in batch experiments. Under optimum conditions, 15 mM H2O2, 2 mM Fe2+, pH 2.8 and room temperature, the initial 1 mM MTBE solution was reduced by 99% within 120 min. Results showed that MTBE was decomposed in a two-stage reaction. MTBE was first decomposed swiftly based on a Fe2+/H2O2 reaction and then decomposed somewhat less rapidly based on a Fe3+/H2O2 reaction. The detection of Fe2+ also supported the theory of the two-stage reaction for the oxidation of MTBE by Fenton's reagent. The dissolved oxygen in the solution decreased rapidly in the first stage reaction, but it showed a slow increase in the second stage with a zero-order kinetics. A reaction mechanism involving two different pathways for the decomposition of MTBE by Fenton's reagent was also proposed. Chemicals including tert-butyl formate, tert-butyl alcohol, methyl acetate and acetone were identified to be the primary intermediates and by-products of the degradation processes.

Abstract:Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) have been regarded as one of the most rebarbative classes of emerging contaminants due to their persistence and toxicity. In the current study, Fe-based metal organic framework (MIL-88A) was synthesized and employed as photo-Fenton catalyst for the degradation of tris-(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), a typical representative of OPFRs. The observations indicated that visible light could boost the reduction of ≡FeIII to ≡FeII in Fe-O clusters of MIL-88A during the photo-Fenton system and consequently induce the transformation of H2O2 to OH, which realized efficient degradation of TCPP. Due to the excellent function of MIL-88A, the eﬀective pH application range of photo-Fenton system was extended in comparison with traditional Fenton system. The degradation efficiency of TCPP was visibly influenced in presence of humic acid (HA). MIL-88A exhibited a commendable reusability and stability after 3 times cycle. As the photo-Fenton reaction proceeded, TCPP was disintegrated to several kinds of carboxylated, dechlorinated and hydroxylated products. The observations of metabolomics endorsed that the interference of intermediate products mixture on E. coli weakened to a certain extent. In conclusion, carboxylation, dechlorination, hydroxylation and oxidation of TCPP were likewise effective for its detoxification, revealing that heterogeneous photo-Fenton system driven by Fe-based metal organic framework will be an attractive and safe treatment technique for OPFRs control.

Abstract:Degradation of 4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol (PCMX) by a heterogeneous Fenton-like process using nanoparticulate zero-valent iron (nZVI) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at pH 6.3 was investigated. Interactive effects of three factors-initial PCMX concentration, nZVI dosage, and H2O2 concentration-were investigated using the response surface method based on the Box-Behnken design. Experimental results showed that complete decomposition of PCMX and 65% of total organic carbon removal were observed after 30 min of reaction at neutral pH under recommended reaction conditions: nZVI, 1.0 g/L; H2O2, 18 mM; and initial PCMX concentration, 0.15 g/L. Based on the effects of scavengers n-butanol and KI, removal of PCMX was mainly attributed to the attack of •OH, especially the surface-bonded •OH. A possible degradation pathway of PCMX was proposed.

Abstract:Bimetallic Fe-Cu oxide (CuFeO2) was prepared using a hydrothermal method and used as catalysis in Fenton-like process coupled with microwave to degrade azo dye Orange G (OG).The effects of various operation parameters and different reaction systems were tested.OG degradation indicated that CuFeO2/H2O2/MW can be conducted at a wide range of pH value (3~9) and the degradation rate was increased with the rise of microwave power,initial H2O2 concentration and CuFeO2 dosage.The determine of the reactive oxygen species during the Fenton-like process indicated that ·OH,·O-2,h+(electron hole) and FeIV=O were involved in OG oxidation which was dominated by ·OH.

Abstract:This study investigated the degradation of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in a reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) system in which a porous Magnéli phase titanium suboxide ceramic membrane served simultaneously as the anode and the membrane. Near complete removal (98.30 ± 0.51%) of PFOS was achieved under a cross-flow filtration mode at the anodic potential of 3.15 V vs standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). PFOS removal efficiency during the REM operation is much greater than that of the batch operation mode under the same anodic potential. A systematic reaction rate analysis in combination with electrochemical characterizations quantitatively elucidated the enhancement of PFOS removal in REM operation in relation to the increased electroactive surface area and improved interphase mass transfer. PFOS appeared to undergo rapid mineralization to CO2 and F-, with only trace levels of short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs, C4-C8) identified as intermediate products. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations and experiments involving free radical scavengers indicated that PFOS degradation was initiated by direct electron transfer (DET) on anode to yield PFOS free radicals (PFOS•), which further react with hydroxyl radicals that were generated by water oxidation and adsorbed on the anode surface (•OHads). The attack of •OHads is essential to PFOS degradation, because, otherwise, PFOS• may react with water and revert to PFOS.
Effects of different factors on photodefluorination of perfluorinated compounds by hydrated electrons in organo-montmorillonite system

Abstract:Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are considered as the most recalcitrant organic contaminants. Our previous research has shown that PFCs can be completely defluorinated in the UV/organoclay/3-indole acetic acid system, however, the factors that could affect the degradation of PFCs, are still not clear. In this study, we further investigated the effect of different indole derivatives and organo-modified montmorillonite on the degradation of perfluooctanoic acid (PFOA). Based on multiple linear regression analysis, our results clearly indicate that hydrated electron yields of indole derivatives, adsorption of PFOA and indole derivatives on organo-montmorillonite contributed independently to the degradation of PFOA. In addition, the results also show that the presence of humic substance (even at 10 mg C L-1) would not significantly suppress the degradation process due to the strong adsorption of humic substance on the organo-montmorillonite surface. This study would provide more information to design an efficient and environment-friendly system for degradation of PFCs, and this technique will have great potential for treatment of persistent contaminants under mild reaction conditions.
