Abstract:Conventional stepped-frequency (SF) waveform achieves wideband via inter-pulse frequency diversity, however its frequency step is limited below the reciprocal of its pulse duration to avoid grating lobes. Applying modulated pulse, e.g. phase coded modulation (PCM) or linear frequency modulation (LFM), to stepped-frequency overcome the above limitation and makes it possible to obtain a wider band with the same number of pulses. But the modulated SF waveform is still not optimal in sense of range correlation sidelobes for two reasons. First, as the frequency is still equally spaced, its autocorrelation inside the reciprocal of modulation bandwidth is Sinc-type and shows about -13dB first lobe. Second, it applies identical modulation to all pulses, and thus its range sidelobes outside the reciprocal of modulation bandwidth are also not suppressed to the most extent. In this paper, we present the phase-coded frequency-hopping (PCFH) waveform to achieve optimal range correlation sidelobes. The present waveform applies nonlinear frequency evolution and different phase code to each pulse; thus it has much higher degree of freedom (DOF) in suppressing range correlation sidelobes. Also involved is a design method, which jointly optimizes the frequencies and phase code. Experimental evidence suggests that the present waveform achieves promising results in terms of sidelobe level.
