Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.
Dual-Emission Ratiometric Fluorescent Probe Based on Lanthanide-Functionalized Carbon Quantum Dots for White Light Emission and Chemical Sensing

Abstract:Herein, we develop a novel method to synthesize lanthanide-functionalized carbon quantum dots via free-radical copolymerization using the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer as a functional monomer and introducing a lanthanide complex to obtain the dual-emission fluorescent composite material FCQDs-Ln(TFA)3 (Ln = Eu, Tb; TFA: trifluoroacetylacetone). The obtained composites were fully characterized, and their structures were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Subsequently, a series of white-light-emitting polymer composite films FCQDs- (Eu:Tb)(TFA)3/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were designed and synthesized by adjusting the ratio of Eu(TFA)3/Tb(TFA)3 under different wavelengths. More significantly, FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 was selected as a sensitive probe for sensing metal cations due to excellent photoluminescence properties, revealing a unique capability of FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 of detecting Fe(III) cations with high efficiency and selectivity. Furthermore, the sensing experiment results indicated that FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 is ideal as a fluorescent nanoprobe for Fe3+ ion detection, and the lowest detection limit for Fe3+ is 0.158 μM, which is superior to many other previous related research studies. This pioneering work provides a new idea and method for constructing a dual-emission ratio sensor based on carbon quantum dots and also extends the potential application in the biological and environmental fields.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Conjugate area-controlled synthesis of multiple-color carbon dots and application in sensors and optoelectronic devices

Abstract:During the heretofore several years, Carbon dots (CDs) have achieved the widely used in fluorescence sensing, optoelectronics and bio imaging owing to their distinctive photoluminescence attribute. Here, CDs with bule to red emission were prepared by solvent heat treatment of phenol-derived with regulation the reaction time in the synthetic system, and their fluorescence spectra ranged from 450 ∼ 650 nm. Characterization through variety of methods and density functional theory calculations clearly demonstrates that the achieve stable long-wavelength emission caused in solvent is mainly due to the increase in conjugate area and oxygen elements of CDs. Importantly, conjugate area and oxidation degree can affect the level of HOMO-LUMO, further changing the band gap leading to fluorescent red-shift. Because of their excellent photoluminescent properties, we examined the performance in detection of non-metal ions by green and yellow-color CDs. The results show that they have high accuracy and rapid reaction to ClO- within the scope of 0 ∼ 50 μM and 4 ∼ 44 μM, with response limits are 31.1 nM and 56.5 nM, respectively. Moreover, we also prepared CDs/PMMA films and CDs/epoxy resin films with highly transparent and stability. Subsequently, the white-light emission diodes (0.32, 0.31; ClE coordinate) was obtained through mixing CDs in a certain proportion. This study provides a novel platform for fluorescence sensing of multi-color emission CDs, and provides strong potential for new optoelectronic equipment.

Abstract:N-doped carbon dots/hydroxyapatite:Eu,Gd (N-CDs/HA:Eu,Gd) composite was synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal route. The obtained composite exhibited porous structure which played key roles in inhibiting the aggregation of N-CDs and enhancing the light absorption. Interestingly, the photoluminescence performance of N-CDs and HA:Eu,Gd was maintained after the one-step in-situ synthesis. Thus, N-CDs/HA:Eu,Gd exhibited dual-emissive and solid state photoluminescence under single wavelength excitation. The unique optical features could endow N-CDs/HA:Eu,Gd potential applications in ion detection and other fields.
Modulation of the Photoluminescence in Carbon Dots through the Surface Modification: from Mechanism to White Light Emitting Diodes.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a new type of fluorescent material because of their unique optical advantages, such as high photoluminescence quantum yields (QYs), excellent photo-stability, excitation-dependent emissions, and low toxicity. However, the photoluminescence mechanism for CDs remains unclear, which limits their further practical application. Here, CDs were synthesized via a solvothermal route from citric acid and urea. Through the oxidation and reduction treatment of pristine CDs, the origin of the photoluminescence and the involved mechanism were revealed. We found that the blue/green/red emissions originated from three diverse emitting states, i.e. the intrinsic state, and C=O- and C=N-related surface states, respectively. Based on the as-prepared CDs, a pH sensor depending on the radiometric luminescence detection was developed. Furthermore, we constructed CD/PVP (PVP, polyvinylpyrrolidone) composite films, which exhibited white light emission with photoluminescence QYs of 15.3%. The white light emission with different correlated color temperatures (CCTs), from 4807 K to 3319 K, was obtained by simply changing the amount of PVP solution. Benefiting from the white light-emitting solid-state films, single-component white light-emitting diodes were fabricated with an average color rendering index value (Ra) of 80.0, luminous efficiency of 10.2 lm W-1, and good working stability, thus indicating a promising potential for practical lighting applications.

Abstract:Luminescent carbon dots (L-CDs) with high quantum yield value (44.7%) and controllable emission wavelengths were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. Importantly, the surface states of the materials could be engineered so that their photoluminescence was either excitation-dependent or distinctly independent. This was achieved by changing the density of amino-groups on the L-CD surface. The above materials were successfully used to prepare multicolor L-CDs/polymer composites, which exhibited blue, green and even white luminescence. In addition, the excellent excitation-independent luminescence of L-CDs prepared at low temperature was tested for detecting various metal ions. As an example, the detection limit of toxic Be 2+ ions, tested for the first time, was as low as 23 μM.

Abstract:Multicolor emissive carbon dots (CDs) have potential applications in many fields such as photoelectric display, light-emitting devices, and bioimaging. Such CDs by heteroatom doping of nitrogen elements assisted with various solvents has achieved recently, yet generally low efficiency in red-light region. Herein, we developed a facile route to synthesize multicolor-emissive CDs governed by a solvothermal method of tetrahydrofuran solvent. The maximum emission locates at 432, 510, and 584 nm with the absolute FL QYs up to 21.1%, 11.0%, and 55.4% for selected B-CDs, G-CDs, and YG-CDs, respectively. By means of the analysis on their PL spectra, fluorescence lifetimes, and microstructures, the different graphitic degrees and surface states formed under the participation of S and N elements in as-prepared CDs determine the fluorescent color, and large sp2-conjugated domains within the YR-CDs is closely related to high QY. They, likewise, endow the YR-CDs with high sensitivity for ion detections of Ag+ and Fe3+, which was further illustrated to have different quenching mechanisms each other due to the affinity interaction with different surface groups of the CDs. High PL QYs of these CDs emission are beneficial to application in solid lighting, phosphors dried by these CDs solutions were mixed with PVP water solution to fabricate CDs/PVP films. The films exhibited stable fluorescence, and three phosphors were also mixed together in proportion to obtain white-light film with a CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.34), which demonstrates that these CDs are potentially fluorescent nanomaterial in the solid-state lighting field.

Abstract:Carbon dots have shown a broad application prospect in the fields of sensing and detection, biological imaging, and optoelectronic devices. However, it is still challenging to adopt a simple and green synthesis route and to develop new precursor systems to prepare full-color luminescent carbon dots. This study proposes a mechanism for fine regulation of carbon dot fluorescence spectra based on surface states of CN, COC, and OH, among which CN play a major role in long wavelength emission while COC and OH are responsible for the blue shift of emission wavelength. Using 4,4-bipyridine and p-phenylenediamine as precursors in safe and environmentally friendly glycol and water as solvents for the first time, the fine spectral carbon dots with full spectrum luminescence from purple (441 nm) to red (627 nm) were successfully synthesized by simply changing the composition of the reaction solvent and using a short reaction time. Compared with other reports on regulating polychromatic carbon dots, our method is more refined and has a wider distribution of luminescent colors. In addition, the obtained carbon dots based on such surface state luminescence mechanism have shown good application prospects in specific detection of Fe3+and cell labeling.
Lanthanide Functionalized Carbon Quantum Dots for White Light Emission, pH Sensing, and Co (II) Detection

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with fluorescence emission have been widely studied for versatile applications, but facile tunability of the spectral properties of CQDs by doping remains to be further explored. Herein, employing lanthanide ion Eu3+ as a dopant and activator, a simple and efficient synthesis route for pure CQDs and Eu-CQDs was demonstrated using N, N-dimethylformamide, oleic acid, and oleylamine as precursors for carbon sources. In comparison, with the popular citric acid precursor, the as-prepared CQDs and Eu-CQDs exhibited an obviously smaller particle size (1.72 ± 0.29 nm) and a more uniform distribution. Through systematic optimization of Eu3+ doping for the Eu-CQD system, colorful light emissions in the visible range were first realized under excitation of ultraviolet (UV) ∼360 nm for promising application of UV-triggered light-emitting diodes. Most interestingly, this Eu-CQD solution with UV-excited colorful light emissions was utilized as a visual pH sensor, experimentally featuring good repeatabilities and stabilities (pH values switching between 7 and 14). Besides, the Eu-CQD solution exhibited highly sensitive detection characteristics for Co (II) ions. Due to the spectral overlapping, the quenching efficiency is as high as 96.3%, and the detection limit is obtained as 0.139 μM, which is much lower than the maximum concentration of Co (II) in the drinking water permitted by WHO. All of these relevant results significantly demonstrate the great potential of lanthanide doping in the multifunctionalization of CQDs for certain emerging applications like lighting, sensing, and detection.
Solvent-controlled synthesis strategy of multicolor emission carbon dots and its applications in sensing and light-emitting devices

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as a new kind of carbon-based luminescent nanomaterials, have drawn widespread attention in the fields of fluorescence sensing, optoelectronic devices, and biological imaging. This work uses citric acid (CA) and Nile Blue A (NBA) as precursors. By simply changing the solvent in the reaction, their bandgaps were systematically controlled, thereby successfully obtaining bright blue, yellow and red fluorescence emission CDs (B-, Y- and RCDs). The higher quantum yield (QY) of B-, Y- and RCDs are 64%, 57% and 51%, respectively. The selected precursors and different solvents are the key to the formation of three emission CDs. Detailed characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that the difference in emission color of CDs is due to the size of the sp2 conjugate domain. In addition, we used multicolor CDs as fluorescent probes to investigate their performance in detection. Among them, BCDs and YCDs can detect Sudan Red I with high selectivity and sensitivity. In the concentration range of 0 to 80 µM, the detection limits are 56 and 41 nM, respectively. Multicolor emitting phosphors and fluorescent films are also obtained by mixing CDs with other matrices. Using Ultraviolet (UV) chip as the excitation source and combining with multicolor fluorescent film and a certain proportion of B-, Y-, and RCDs/epoxy resin composites, bright monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and white LED (WLED) with high color rendering index (CRI) were prepared. The above results indicate that the multicolor CDs prepared by us have great application potential in the fields of food safety control and optical devices.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon quantum dots (CDs), as one of the most potential fluorescent sensing materials, have attracted lots of attention in recent years. However, the low quantum yields, complicated separation and purification procedures have limited its application and large-scale production. In this paper, a facile and universal method was successfully developed to synthesize CDs-silica (SiO 2 ) spheres composites (CS composites), which not only demonstrates 10-fold fluorescence enhancement compared with single CDs but also enables the purification with a simple centrifugation step. Meanwhile, fabricated composites also presented superior photoluminescence (PL) stability and high PL intensity, even in some tough environments such as acid/alkali aqueous solution, high/low temperature, and high ion concentration aqueous solution. This simple, fast, low-cost, and efficient synthesis method would potentially expand the application of CDs for clinical analysis, optical sensing (ferric ion (Fe 3+ ) and pyrophosphate), bioimaging and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Abstract:Color-tunable luminescent polymer composite materials are desired for applications in light-emitting diodes. Herein, we directly use commercial humic acid as precursor to fabricate carbon dots by one-step hydrothermal method in formic acid and hydrogen peroxide solution. It is found that the size distribution of synthesized carbon dots ranges from 2 to 5 nm, and the carbon dots display concentration-dependent multi-color luminescence in formic acid, N,N-dimethylformamide and deionized water under 365-nm UV light, separately. The quantum yield of the as-made carbon dots with broad color tunability (445–587 nm) in formic acid is about 20% at 0.3125 mg/ml. Furthermore, by adjusting the concentration of carbon dots in polyvinyl alcohol, the composite films emit blue, cyan and light yellow fluorescence and the Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage color coordinates vary from (0.19, 0.23), through (0.25, 0.35) to (0.29, 0.40) at the content of CDs 3, 5 and 7 wt.% under the excitation of 365 nm, respectively. Meanwhile, the transmittance of the composite film at 5 wt.% is maintained at 81.8 to 87.2% of the pure polyvinyl alcohol film at 550 nm wavelength. This work provides an innovative, simple and efficient way to prepare concentration-dependent polychromatic carbon dots composite films, and the obtained multi-color light-emitting composites have a wide range of photoluminescence spectra, covering most of the visible light range, which opens up the possibility of applying these materials in the fields of optoelectronic materials.Graphical AbstractAn innovative, simple and efficient way to fabricate concentration-dependent multi-color CDs/PVA composite films, which promote the application of CDs in the fields of optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Turning waste into wealth, herein, two highly fluorescent N and S co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B) were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of contaminant reactive red 2 (RR2) and L-cysteine or L-methionine, respectively. The detailed morphology and structure of N, S-CDs were characterized by XRD, Raman spectrum, FTIR spectra, TEM, HRTEM, AFM and XPS. The maximum fluorescent of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B are 565 and 615 nm under different excitation wavelengths with moderate fluorescence intensity of 14.0 % and 6.3 %, respectively. The microstructure models of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B, which were induced by FT-IR, XPS and element analysis, had been applied in DFT calculation. The result indicated that the doping of S and N is beneficial to obtain the red-shift of fluorescent spectra. Both N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B showed highly sensitive and selective to Fe3+. N, S-CDs-A can also detect Al3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, N, S-CDs-B was successfully applied in cell imaging.

Abstract:The emergence and fast development of carbon dots (CDs) provide an unprecedented opportunity for applications in the field of photoelectricity, but their practicability still suffers from complicated synthesis procedures and the substrate dependence of solid-state fluorescence. In this study, we design a unique microwave-assisted solid-phase synthesis route for preparing tunable fluorescent CD powders with yellow, orange, and red fluorescence (Y-CDs, O-CDs, R-CDs) by simply adjusting the mass ratio of reactants, a method which is suitable for the large-scale synthesis of CDs. The Y-/O-/R-CDs were systematically characterized using physics and spectroscopy techniques. Based on the perfect solid-state fluorescence performance of the proposed fluorescent CD powders, the Y-/O-/R-CDs were successfully applied for the construction of multi-color and white light-emitting diode devices at low cost. Furthermore, the Y-CDs displayed much higher yield and luminous efficiency than the O-CDs and R-CDs and were further used for fingerprint identification on the surfaces of glass sheets and tinfoil. In addition, the R-CD aqueous solution fluorescence is sensitive to pH, suggesting its use as a pH indicator for monitoring intracellular pH fluctuations. The proposed series of fluorescent powders composed of CDs may herald a new era in the application of optical components and criminal investigation fields.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) have raised broad interest because of their great potential in the fluorescence related fields, such as photocatalysis and bioimaging. CDs exhibit different optical properties when dissolved in various solvents. However, the effects of solvents during the process of preparation on the fluorescence emission of CDs are still unclear. In this work, CDs were prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal route. Typical critic acid and thiourea were used as precursors. Through changing the volume ratio of water to N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF), we have obtained color tunable CDs, with the emission wavelength from 450 to 640 nm. TEM images, Raman and XPS spectra indicate that the particle size of CDs and the content of surface functional groups (C–N/C–S and C≡N bonds) increase with the increasing ratio of DMF to water, which results in the optimal emission wavelength red-shifted. The prepared multicolor CDs may have prospects in the lighting applications. Graphical abstract

Preparation of multicolor-emissive carbon dots with high quantum yields and their epoxy composites for fluorescence anti-counterfeiting and light-emitting devices

Abstract:A facile solvothermal method for synthesizing full-color-emission carbon dots (CDs) was developed using p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and maleic anhydride (MAH) as raw materials under mild reaction conditions. By only changing the solvents, blue light-emitting carbon dots (B-CDs), green light-emitting carbon dots (G-CDs), orange light-emitting carbon dots (O-CDs) and red light-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) can be realized at 180 °C for 4h, and their emission wavelengths cover the visible spectrum ranging from 420 to 607 nm. The relative quantum yields for B-CDs, G-CDs, O-CDs and R-CDs are 55.6%, 76.5%, 59.5% and 30.9%, respectively. The different fluorescence features of these CDs are mainly attributed to various-sized sp2 conjugated domains with N- and O-decorated surfaces. The as-prepared CDs have good thermal properties with an initial thermal decomposition temperature of 187-223 °C and significant pH-dependent fluorescence relationships. Even after heat treatment at 100 °C for 1 h and staying at room temperature for 30 days, the four CDs can possess stable fluorescence performance. After CDs are introduced to epoxy resins (EP), the resulting CDs/EP composites with 0.25-1.0% CDs have enhanced tensile strengths (60-69 MPa) because of the higher conversion of epoxy groups and the excellent interface interaction between CDs and EP matrix. CDs/EP composites also display good thermal properties, high light transparency of over 80% and good photoluminescence stability. Using an ultraviolet chip as the excitation source combined with a CDs/EP film, bright monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and white LEDs are easily obtained. CDs/EP composites can potentially be used as fluorescence anti-counterfeiting device.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an easy chemical oxidation approach toward fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) using arc-synthesized carbon by-products. The as-synthesized CDs possess a strong excitation-independent photoluminescence emission located at ca. 502 nm and strong upconversion fluorescence under long wavelength radiation (from 900 to 550 nm). Importantly, the CD-based device has been investigated and exhibits excellent photoresponse under UV irradiation, highlighting the potential for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Phosphorescent Carbon Dots In article number 2206080, Siyu Lu and co‐workers design covalent bond engineered encapsulation structures for the preparation of efficient, long‐lived multicolor phosphorescent carbon dots (CDs)@silica composites. High temperature calcination collapses the silica and transforms the covalent bonds into shorter and more rigid covalent bonds. The synergistic effect inhibits the vibration and rotation of CDs' luminescence center, resulting in multicolor phosphorescence spanning 465 to 680 nm and with lifetimes of up to 2.11 s.

Abstract:A new class of carbon dots (E‐CCDs) is obtained with one‐pot solvothermal method. E‐CCDs exhibit dual fluorescence emission at 460 and 600 nm, which is related to different emission centers. The addition of cyanic acid enhances the room‐temperature phosphorescence behavior with a lifetime of 1.17 s. These unique carbon dots can be potentially used for fingerprint detection and multi‐information encryption. As one of the most promising fluorescent nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) are extensively studied. Nevertheless, one‐pot synthesis methods for CDs with both dual emission aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) and room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) could lead to significant breakthrough in extensive application fields. Herein, a new class of CDs (E‐CCDs) with reversible luminescence (blue dissolved fluorescence and red AIE) and RTP behavior is obtained with an eco‐friendly, low‐cost one‐pot solvothermal method. E‐CCDs exhibit dual fluorescence emission at 460 (Em‐1) and 600 nm (Em‐2), which is related to different emission centers. The addition of cyanic acid enhances the RTP behavior with a lifetime of 1.17 s, which lasts for ≈9 s to the naked eye. Based on the unique fluorescence and phosphorescence characteristics of CDs, E‐CCDs can be potentially used for fingerprint detection and information encryption.
