Abstract:Bursting of nanobombs with co-encapsulating detonating molecule and nitromethane (NM) inside a carbon nanotube (CNT) has been investigated via nonequilibrium reactive molecular dynamics (NERMD) with density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The target detonating molecules were screened by using Kamlet–Jacobs (K–J) equations. The detonating molecules (i.e., HMX and RDX) exhibited a much higher decomposition rate than NM and contributed to the accelerated decomposition of NM. Subsequently, the CNT nanocontainer functionalized by reaction intermediates burst. The bursting time was shortened by detonating molecules, as predicted by DFT calculations. The overall reaction mechanism did not differ significantly with or without detonating molecules.

Abstract:The shock response has a great influence on the design, synthesis, and application of energetic materials in both industrial and military areas. Therefore, the initial decomposition mechanism of bond scission at the atomistic level of condensed-phase α-RDX under shock loading has been studied based on quantum molecular dynamics simulations in combination with a multi-scale shock technique. First, based on the frontier molecular orbital theory, our calculated result shows that the N-NO2 bond is the weakest bond in the α-RDX molecule in the ground state, which may be the initial bond for pyrolysis. Second, the changes of bonds under shock loading are investigated by the changes of structures, kinetic bond lengths, and Laplacian bond orders during the simulation. Also, the variation of thermodynamic properties with time in shocked α-RDX at 10 km/s along the lattice vector a for a timescale of up to 3.5 ps is presented. Abstract:Nitro explosive is a main type of energetic material which can release a large amount of energy when detonated under extreme conditions. Further study of the excited state dynamics of photo-induced nitro explosive can provide an effective method to understand the complex process of ultrafast detonation physics. In this paper, the initial step of photodissociation at the first excited electron state of some typical nitro explosives including nitromethane (NM), cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) is studied using the time-dependent density functional theory and the molecular dynamic method. The transient structures of energetic molecules and time evolutions of excited energy levels are observed. It is found that the structural relaxation of energetic molecules occurs immediately after the electronic excitation, and the entire photoexcitation process comes into being within a range of 200 fs. At the same time, the positions of molecular energy levels change to various degrees with the oscillations of different frequencies, such as the overlap between HOMO and LUMO, which is related to the obvious change of molecular configuration, indicating that the energy of excited carriers transfers to atoms in the form of heat through electron-phonon coupling, and the energy is redistributed through vibration relaxation in the initial stage of photodissociation which causes the chemical bonds of C-H, N-N and N-N to rupture, and the hydrogen atoms dissociated from methyl, methylene or amino groups, and the nearest nitro group to form some new intermediate states. In this process, the energy levels near the excited electron and hole energy also change significantly with time, suggesting that the coupling between electron and electron also plays a role in the dissociation process. Comparing with NM and RDX, the evolution of the excited energy level of TATB has obvious lower-frequency (phonon frequency) oscillations, showing that the coupling between electronic state and phonon of TATB is weak and thus makes it more difficult to dissociate. Our study can deepen the understanding of the structural relaxation of excited states and the time evolution of excitation energy levels in energetic materials, and provide a new understanding of the photoinduced reaction and the initial steps of laser ignition in energetic materials.

Abstract:Dimethylnitramine (DMNA) is a prototype system used in the investigation of the unimolecular decomposition mechanism of the nitramine-compound family. The photoinduced excited-state nonadiabatic processes and successive unimolecular dissociation of DMNA were investigated by trajectory surface-hopping dynamics at the semiempirical OM2/MRCI level. Two S-1/S-0 conical intersections (CI01 alpha and CI01 beta) were found to play essential roles in the nonadiabatic decay dynamics of DMNA. After the S-1 -> S-0 decay, the excess kinetic energy finally results in the cleavage of the N-N bond in the ground electronic state. The two reaction channels through CI01 alpha and CI01 beta show differences in molecular motions and decay features. The trajectories passing CI01 alpha can hop one or several times, and the intramolecular vibrational energy transfer in the ground state takes place before dissociation, whereas trajectories following the CI01 beta channel mainly dissociate directly after only one S-1 -> S-0 hop.

Abstract:Shock-driven electron redistribution of triamino trinitrobenzene has been studied by time-resolved Raman spectroscopy and first-principle calculation. The variation trends of electron densities of C-NO2 bonds, H-N-H bonds and intermolecular hydrogen bonds (inter-HB) are respectively analyzed from the Raman peak shifts and the intensity changes under shock conditions. In addition, the pressure-dependent effective bond order is calculated by density functional theory. By combining the experimental and computational results, it is deduced that electrons redistribute mainly through two paths under shock loading. In one path, the electrons transfer from the H-N-H, C-NH2, N-O bonds, and the intramolecular hydrogen bonds (intra-HB) to the inter-HB; and in the other path, the electrons transfer from the N-O and C-C bonds to the C-NO2 bonds. These results suggest that this mechanism is reversible under relatively modest shock conditions and may change the strength orders of some chemical bonds and make some chemical bonds broken easily under violent shock conditions.

Abstract:The condensed-phase high energy molecules,which reactions usually need the high temperature and high temperature condition,have a distinctly different reaction pathway from the gas-phase molecules.So the molecular dynamics simulations are usually needed for these molecules besides the computational analysis of the structures and electronic properties.In this work,by using the Reactive Force Field molecular dynamics simulations,we studied the initial reaction mechanisms of condensed-phase 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene(TATB) under the high temperature and high pressure.Due to the distribution of molecular structures and particle numbers at different time scales,we summarized that the early event C-N bond scission and hydrogen transfers may lead to detonation reactions.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to gain fundamental insights into the mechanisms for the primary detonation process of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) under shock wave loading using self-consistent charge density-functional tight binding(SCC-DFTB) calculations combined with the multiscale shock technique (MSST). The primary process starts with shock loading and ends with the formation of dynamically stable heterocyclic clusters, which could inhibit the reactivity of TATB. The results show that the initial step of shocked TATB decomposition is the N–O bond cleavage; then carbon rings aggregate and connect by N atoms to form clusters; after the carbon rings open, heterocyclic clusters with nitrogen are formed, and persist throughout the simulation. This is a new mechanism for the primary processes of shocked TATB and this initiation mechanism is independent of the initial shock speeds.

Abstract:We have developed a single-shot Raman spectroscopy experiment to study at the molecular level the initiation mechanisms that can lead to sustained detonation of a triaminotrinitrobenzene-based explosive. Shocks up to 30 GPa were generated using a two-stage laser-driven flyer plate generator. The samples were confined by an optical window and shock pressure was maintained for at least 30 ns. Photon Doppler Velocimetry measurements were performed at the explosive/window interface to determine the shock pressure profile. Raman spectra were recorded as a function of shock pressure and the shifts of the principal modes were compared to static high-pressure measurements performed in a diamond anvil cell. Our shock data indicate the role of temperature effects. Our Raman spectra also show a progressive extinction of the signal which disappears around 9 GPa. High-speed photography images reveal a simultaneous progressive darkening of the sample surface up to total opacity at 9 GPa. Reflectivity measurements under shock compression show that this opacity is due to a broadening of the absorption spectrum over the entire visible region.

Abstract:As the simplest nitroaromatic compound, nitrobenzene is an interesting model system to explore the rich photochemistry of nitroaromatic compounds. Previous investigations of nitrobenzene's photochemical dynamics have probed structural and electronic properties. These investigations paint, at times, a convoluted and sometimes contradictory description of the photochemical landscape. We investigate the ultrafast dynamics of nitrobenzene triggered by photoexcitation at 267 nm for the first time using a structural probe with femtosecond time resolution. Our probe complements previous measurements of nitrobenzene's electronic structure evolution and aids in determining the photochemical dynamics with less ambiguity. We employ megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction to follow nitrobenzene's structural evolution within the first 5 ps after photoexcitation. We observe ground state recovery within 160 ± 60 fs through nonadiabatic dynamics. Based on comparisons of the experimental signal with molecular dynamics simulations, we exclude a significant population of the triplet manifold. Furthermore, we do not observe fragmentation of nitrobenzene within the investigated time window, which indicates that previously observed photofragmenation reactions take place in the vibrationally "hot" ground state on timescales considerably beyond 5 ps.

Abstract:In this article, we review recent atomistic computational techniques to study the electronic structure aspects and chemistry of energetic materials at high-pressure and/or high temperature. While several mechanisms have been proposed for the initial events of energetic materials at high-pressure, we explore the validity of a proposed shear-induced local metallization via molecular bond bending in the insensitive explosive TATB. We study the effect of high-stress (both uniform and uniaxial) on the electronic energy band-gap and the first chemical event of a prototypical energetic material, that of nitromethane. We also determine chemical reactions rate laws and decomposition mechanisms from a quantum-based molecular dynamics simulation of HMX, a widely used explosive material, at conditions of high density and temperature similar to that encounter under detonation. Finally, we review a new multi-scale computational tool recently developed to model the shock-induced chemistry of energetic materials at the atomistic level, and report its applicability to shocked solid nitromethane.

Abstract:Numerical simulations on the performances of warheads require an immediate estimation on the equation of state (EOS) of explosive products. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out in this work to predict the PVT relation for the main products of explosive reactions of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB). A strategy of isolating the effect of density, temperature and composition change for predicting the PVT relation of the mixtures is proposed based on the computed results. The proposed equation makes good predictions on the pressure of TATB products of 1.60-2.20 g/cm3 in density, 2000-4000 K in temperature and +/- 10% in composition change. Moreover, its predictions match well with the commonly used Becker-Kistiakowsky-Wilson (BKW) equation, which was developed in an experiment-theory combined approach. Our study suggests a feasible and efficient approach for the EOS establishment of energetic materials.

Abstract:p-Nitrotoluene is a toxic, flammable, and explosive nitro-hazardous chemical in process industries. However, the combustion reaction mechanism is still unclear, and kinetic data on chemical reactions is lacking. This work investigated the combustion reaction pathways of p-nitrotoluene through ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations and calculated the reaction rate constants at the M062X/6-31+g**//CCSD(T)/cc-PVTZ theoretical level. A combustion reaction kinetic model for p-nitrotoluene was proposed, which included 367 species and 2509 reactions, thereby exploring the initial pathways and mechanisms of the p-nitrotoluene combustion reaction. Reaction force field molecular dynamics simulations and high-precision quantum chemical density functional theory calculations showed that the key intermediate products of p-nitrotoluene combustion are mainly C6H5CH3, C6H6, and C6H4CH3OH. Hydrogen extraction from CH3 center dot was the main hydrogen extraction pathway initiating the chain reaction, while NO2 center dot tended to depart from the benzene ring and participate in hydrogen abstraction reactions. Through sensitivity analysis of these three key intermediate products, the initial reaction pathways of combustion were elucidated. This research provides theoretical guidance for the process safety and risk engineering of nitro-hazardous chemicals.

Our lack of dissociation signal within the first 5 ps indicates that previously observed photofragmenation reactions take place in the vibrationally "hot" ground state on timescales considerably beyond 5 ps.

Abstract:The present work completed a series of one-dimensional plate impact experiments combined with an temperature control system, which could study the temperature effects on shock initiation characteristics of the tri-amino-tri-nitro-benzene (TATB)-based explosives. Buildup to detonation was measured with aluminum-based electromagnetic particle velocity (EMV) gauge technique, and the shock tracker gauges recorded the change in position of shock wave in the explosive sample over time. As temperature cooling to −20°C, the fitting line of Hugoniot had an obvious inflection point, and the run distance to detonation became longer than ambient temperature under the same initiation pressure, indicating that the explosives became less sensitive. Finally, the numerical simulation of the shock initiation process for explosives was performed by the Arrhenius, Wescott, Stewart, and Davis (AWSD) reaction rate model . The results indicated that the AWSD reaction rate model based on the impact temperature and pressure can better simulate the shock-to-detonation transition at different temperatures by only one set of model parameters.

Abstract:Abstract Microscopic electron properties of α-hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (α-RDX) with different shock wave velocities have been investigated based on molecular dynamics together with multi-scale shock technique. The studied shock wave velocities are 8, 9 and 10 km ⋅ s−1. It has been said that the shock sensitivity and reaction initiation of explosives are closely relevant with their microscopic electron properties. The reactions, including the reaction products, which are counted from the trajectory during the simulations are analysed first. The results showed that the number of the products strictly rely on shock wave velocities. The reaction rates and decomposition rates are also studied, which showed the differences between the different shock velocities. The results of electron properties show that α-RDX is a wide-gap insulator in the ground state and the metallisation conditions of shocked RDX are determined, which are lower than under-static high pressure.

Abstract:The solid phase thermal decomposition and nanocrystal effect are extremely important to understand the ignition, combustion, reaction growth and buildup to detonation under shock wave action. To explore the basic mechanism at the atomic level and understand the interaction among nanocrystal lattices, molecules, and intermediates during the solid phase decomposition, ReaxFF large-scale molecular dynamics simulation at 1000-3000 K was demonstrated on the solid phase of nanocrystalline RDX with a size in the range of 5-12 nm. Based on the analysis of the RDX decay and chemical species, we found that the whole decomposition process can be divided into the solid-affected stage and the following less-condensed phase stage. From the results of NO2 diffusion and high frequency reaction statistics for the nanocrystal effect on the RDX decay, intermediate diffusion was found to be strongly associated with the chemical pathway. In addition, it was found for the first time that the thermal decomposition of RDX originates from the inside of the nanocrystal instead of its surface. Furthermore, a promising uniform energy distribution mechanism transfer by vibration inside the nanocrystalline RDX was demonstrated. The detailed information derived from this study can aid in the thorough understanding of the size effect on the chemical kinetics of nanoexplosives, especially for thermal decomposition and reaction growth.
Identification of Nitro Explosives by Direct Analysis in Real-Time Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Nitro compounds such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, and pentaerythritol tetranitrate are common ingredients of high explosives found in homeland security threats, minefields, and industrial materials. This study aims at developing a convenient surface analysis method for rapid identification of these compounds by direct analysis in real time coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The possible ionization mechanisms and fragmentation pathways using the direct analysis in real-time ionization source were developed for each compound based on the ions produced by in-source collision-induced dissociation and acquired by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. These compounds release nitro groups and form nitroless characteristic fragments with other nitro adducts during in-source collision-induced dissociation processes. The characteristic ion [M+C2H4N3O2](-) produced by cyclotrimethylene trinitramine was observed for the first time to our best knowledge. Direct analysis in real-time time-of-flight mass spectrometry has provided rapid identification of residues from various samples from explosion scenes and, therefore, is a potential powerful screening tool for criminal evidence.

Abstract:Pump-probe measurements aim to capture the motion of electrons and nuclei on their natural timescales (femtoseconds to attoseconds) as chemical and physical transformations take place, effectively making “molecular movies” with short light pulses. However, the quantum dynamics of interest are filtered by the coordinate-dependent matrix elements of the chosen experimental observable. Thus, it is only through a combination of experimental measurements and theoretical calculations that one can gain insight into the internal dynamics. Here, we report on a combination of structural (relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction, or UED) and spectroscopic (time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, or TRPES) measurements to follow the coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics involved in the internal conversion and photodissociation of the polyatomic molecule, diiodomethane (CH_{2}I_{2}). While UED directly probes the 3D nuclear dynamics, TRPES only serves as an indirect probe of nuclear dynamics via Franck-Condon factors, but it is sensitive to electronic energies and configurations, via Koopmans’ correlations and photoelectron angular distributions. These two measurements are interpreted with trajectory surface hopping calculations, which are capable of simulating the observables for both measurements from the same dynamics calculations. The measurements highlight the nonlocal dynamics captured by different groups of trajectories in the calculations. For the first time, both UED and TRPES are combined with theory capable of calculating the observables in both cases, yielding a direct view of the structural and nonadiabatic dynamics involved.
Initial Decomposition Mechanism of 3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) under Shock Loading: ReaxFF Parameterization and Molecular Dynamic Study

Abstract:We report a reactive molecular dynamic (ReaxFF-MD) study using the newly parameterized ReaxFF-lg reactive force field to explore the initial decomposition mechanism of 3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) under shock loading (shock velocity >6 km/s). The new ReaxFF-lg parameters were trained from massive quantum mechanics data and experimental values, especially including the bond dissociation curves, valence angle bending curves, dihedral angle torsion curves, and unimolecular decomposition paths of 3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), 1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and 1,1-Diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7). The simulation results were obtained by analyzing the ReaxFF dynamic trajectories, which predicted the most frequent chain reactions that occurred before NTO decomposition was the unimolecular NTO merged into clusters ((C2H2O3N4)n). Then, the NTO dissociated from (C2H2O3N4)n and started to decompose. In addition, the paths of NO2 elimination and skeleton heterocycle cleavage were considered as the dominant initial decomposition mechanisms of NTO. A small amount of NTO dissociation was triggered by the intermolecular hydrogen transfer, instead of the intramolecular one. For α-NTO, the calculated equation of state was in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the discontinuity slope of the shock-particle velocity equation was presented at a shock velocity of 4 km/s. However, the slope of the shock-particle velocity equation for β-NTO showed no discontinuity in the shock wave velocity range of 3–11 km/s. These studies showed that MD by using a suitable ReaxFF-lg parameter set, could provided detailed atomistic information to explain the shock-induced complex reaction mechanisms of energetic materials. With the ReaxFF-MD coupling MSST method and a cheap computational cost, one could also obtain the deformation behaviors and equation of states for energetic materials under conditions of extreme pressure.

Abstract:Detonation theories for homogeneous, condensed energetic materials have focused on 1-d analysis in which the detonation ignition physics forms the most difficult part. The classic ZND model considers detonation ignition through a frozen shock transition followed by an induction period, in which the shock temperature induces vibrational, rotational and electronic excitation followed by molecular dissociation (i.e., thermal decomposition). The frozen shock assumption has been the topic of debate and an alternative model has been proposed whereby detonation ignition arises from excitation of the translational degrees of freedom in the shock front [1]. This raises an important postulation of detonation ignition of molecular condensed matter being initiated by non-equilibrium kinetic events within the shock front rather than equilibrium thermal molecular dissociation due to the shock temperature. Experimental support for this hypothesis must be derived from observations inside the shock front thereby requiring measurements on the time scale of 10−2−1 ps, which remains beyond the scope of current experimental techniques. However, the recent development of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations offers an alternative approach to elucidate possible mechanisms of detonation ignition. These methods are based on first-principle quantum mechanical calculations that allow for the simulation of chemical processes at the atomic level. Molecular dynamics simulations of bimolecular collisions using density functional theories serve as a most simplified model for shock-induced dissociation [2–3], while multimolecular collisions including neighbourhood molecules serve as a simple model for shock dissociation in bulk liquid [4].
