Abstract:We report the formation and structure of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofiber shish kebabs (NFSKs) containing stereocomplex crystal (SC) shish and SC/homocrystal (HC) kebabs. PLA-based NFSKs were obtained by combining electrospinning and controlled polymer crystallization in order to investigate the interplay between PLA SC and HC formation. Nanofibers were produced by electrospinning poly(l-lactic acid)/poly(d-lactic acid) (PLLA/PDLA) blends and were used as the shish. A secondary polymer (either PDLA or PLLA/PDLA blends) was decorated on the nanofiber by an incubation method to form kebab lamellae. We show that both SC and HC kebab crystals can be formed using a SC shish following a soft epitaxy mechanism, while the subtle morphological differences in the resultant NFSKs reveal the propensity of SC nuclei in SC/HC crystallization.

Abstract:Understanding of crystal nucleation mechanism of nanohybrid shish-kebab (NHSK) structures will guide researchers to design new polymer materials with high performance. We performed dynamic Monte Carlo simulations to reveal the nucleation details of the NHSK structures in polymer solutions at molecular scale. The formation of the NHSK structures was induced by nanofillers with small lateral size under attractive polymer-filler interactions. The synergic effect of the filler geometry and the polymer-filler interaction induced the anisotropic absorption of chain segments onto the filler surface. Namely, the nanofiller absorbed the segments, which simultaneously oriented along the long axis of the nanofiller, resulting in the formation of a polymer coating with some local oriented segments on the filler surface. Those local oriented segments participated in the subsequent heterogeneous nucleation, and eventually developed into kebabs with uniform orientation.

Abstract:Nowadays, it is a research hotspot to realize the controllability of polymer crystal structure in polymer nanocomposites. However, polymer crystals induced by two-dimensional filler always exhibit random orientation, which somewhat limit the improvement of physical properties of polymer materials. In the current paper, dynamic Monte Carlo simulations were performed to explore the methods preparing crystals with uniform orientation. Heterogeneous nucleation of deformed polymer loops grafted on two-dimensional filler can induce the appearance of a special nanohybrid shish-kebab (NHSK) structure, in which the two-dimensional filler acts as "shish" and induces the formation of crystals with uniform orientation. The grafted deformed chains are first heterogeneously nucleated on filler; surface, and then free chain's participate in crystallization, resulting, in the formation of the NHSK structure. The NHSK structure can only be formed in the systems with high interfacial interactions at high temperatures or moderate interfacial interactions at moderate temperatures or low interfacial interactions at low temperatures. The method proposed here the controllability of polymer crystal orientation in experiments, can be used to achieve the controllability of polymer crystal orientation in experiments.
In Situ Formation of Nanohybrid Shish-Kebabs during Electrospinning for the Creation of Hierarchical Shish-Kebab Structures

Abstract:We successfully tested the hypothesis that the nanohybrid shish-kebab (NHSK) structure, i.e., polymer kebabs on a CNT shish, can be created in situ during electrospinning. In addition, the resulting nanofibers containing the NHSKs were used to create a hierarchical structure by introducing a second level of shish-kebabs: the nanofiber shish-kebab (NFSK), i.e., polymer kebabs on the nanofiber shish. A multiwalled CNT/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (MWCNT)/(PCL) solution was electrospun to form nanofibers of empty set approximate to 100 nm. The MWCNTs aligned in fiber direction within the MWCNT/PCL nanofibers. The first time creation of the NHSK during electrospinning was confirmed by bright field diffraction contrast in the transmission electron microscope. The NFSK was created by incubating the NHSK containing nanofibers in a supersaturated PCL solution. A simple model explaining the in situ NHSK formation is presented. The hierarchical structure based on the shish-kebab morphology is proposed as a high-performing building block in future advanced materials.

Abstract:The incorporation of nanofillers can result in the changes of crystallization behaviors of block copolymers. We performed dynamic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the crystallization behaviors induced by one-dimensional nanofiller in miscible diblock copolymers with selective interaction. The addition of nanofiller significantly improves the crystallizability of block copolymers by inducing heterogeneous nucleation on its surface. In addition, the presence of nanofiller leads to the formation of a novel nanohybrid epitaxial brush structure, which consists of a central nanofiller and surrounding “bristles” formed by lamellar crystals of crystallizable blocks with random coils of non-crystallizable blocks. During the formation of this hierarchical structure, the orientation of local crystallizable segments along the long axis of the nanofiller, as well as the local microphase separation between crystallizable and non-crystallizable blocks, both occur prior to crystallization.

Abstract:This study reveals important features of crystal nucleation and growth in coarse-grained structurally restricted polymer systems (i.e., one end of the chain is grafted on the surface of one-dimensional filler) based on the Monte Carlo simulation on cubic lattice. The structurally restricted polymer system includes two kinds of polymers: terminally grafted and free chains. The existence of more grafted chains increases the crystal nuclei number in the structurally restricted polymer systems, which shortens the nucleation induction time and accelerates crystallization. Intramolecular nucleation occurs when the chain structure is limited. Then, with the increase of restricted chains, the nucleation mechanism changes to intermolec-ular nucleation. When the interface interaction is introduced into the system, the change of crystalliza-tion rate is the result of the competition between conformation entropy and chain mobility. The chain elongation increases with the enhancement of interface interaction, which leads to the increase of the loss of conformational entropy and is conducive to the formation of crystal nucleus. However, the chain mobility slows down with the enhancement of interface interaction, which will hinder the formation of crystal nucleus. By tailoring the interface interaction, the crystal morphologies of polymer nanocompos-ites can be adjusted to form the unique nanohybrid shish-kebab structures, that is, the filler is used as shish, the crystal regions generated by free chains are attached to the outside of crystal regions generated by restricted chains to form kebabs. Abstract:When fillers with a high aspect ratio are added into polymer matrix, interfacial crystallization can drive the formation of hybrid shish-kebab (HSK)-like structures including hybrid shish-calabash, hybrid shish-kebab, and transcrystalline layer structures. Such structures have attracted much attention in the past 20 years due to their excellent mechanical properties and the potential to prepare novel functional materials. There are diverse one-dimensional (1D) templates being able to act as shish templates and various polymer matrix growing on its surface as kebab/calabash in the literature. In this review, we aim to summarize the HSK-like structures based on different categories of 1D shish templates including carbon nanotubes, electrospinning nanofibers, self-assembling nucleating agents, and commercial synthetic and natural fibers. Meanwhile, we will discuss the formation mechanism of HSK-like structures and strategies to adjust its morphology by polymer crystallization. The mechanical properties of the hybrid materials with HSK-like structures are also discussed. We hope this review will inspire innovative works in the preparation of novel HSK-like structures and boost the development of polymer materials in the near future.

Abstract:The microstructures of asymmetric diblock copolymer nanoparticles were investigated using real-space self-consistent field theory. The nanoparticle boundary provides a spherical confinement in which the highly deformable copolymers are forced into a closed and crowded space. The surface-field-induced effects on the microstructures were examined systematically, and a rich variety of novel structures, such as mixtures of distorted cylinders and spherical lamellae, was observed in the copolymer nanoparticles. Investigations of the free energies indicate that the surface-field-induced structural transitions are of the first order. The formation mechanism of the confinement-induced structures was reasonably elucidated, based on the interactions between the polymer chains and confinement boundaries, and on the spherical symmetry from confinements. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with available simulation and experimental observations. The asymmetric diblock copolymer nanoparticles show a rich variety of novel structures, such as mixtures of distorted cylinders and spherical lamellae, due to the surface-field-induced effects from the nanoparticle surfaces.
Flow-Induced Shish Nucleation in Lightly Crosslinked Polyethylene: Connecting Polymer Properties and Strain to the Final Shish-Kebab Structure

Abstract:Shish appears under certain conditions in flow-induced crystallization of polymers. The morphology of shish is determined by experimental conditions, such as strain and polymer properties. Moreover, shish distribution significantly affects the morphology and arrangement of subsequent epitaxial kebabs. Therefore, quantitatively clarifying the chain relation of experimental conditions-shish nucleation-final shish- kebab structure is of scientific and practical importance. We investigate this problem by measuring lightly crosslinked high-density polyethylene samples with small-angle X-ray scattering and an extensional rheometer. It is found that the critical strain for shish formation (epsilon(1)) is the one fully extending the crosslinked strand in the network. The shish radius (R-s) is determined by the spacing (S-||) between adjacent parallel stretched strands. Based on these observations, the mechanism for shish nucleation in the stretched network is discussed. As the strain further increases and exceeds the one fully stretching the whole chain (62), the limit on the growth of shish is suppressed by overstretching, resulting in a further increase of the shish radius. The packing of shish also undergoes a transition at the strain of (epsilon(2)) from an ordered state to a sparse and disordered state. The lateral ordering of shish induces the interlocked shish-kebab structure, which is a candidate for polymeric materials with ultrahigh moduli.

Abstract:Formation of polymer crystals inside a hollow nanotube provides the potential for its interior functionalization. Based on dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, the formation mechanism of crystal lamellae with uniform orientation inside hollow nanotubes in polymer solutions was investigated. In nanotubes with lateral size smaller than the size of chain coils, inside segments prefer to orient along the long axis of the nanotubes, due to the confinement effect exerted by side surfaces. Thus, crystal lamellae with uniform orientation along the long axis of the nanotubes can be formed inside. Further investigations revealed that the formation of these reverse kebabs is codetermined by the degree of confinement and the strength of interfacial interaction. Both the increase of interfacial interaction and the decrease of lateral size can lead to the improvement of segmental orientation of inside segments, thus favoring the formation of the reverse kebabs.
High-Yield Synthesis of Nanohybrid Shish-Kebab Polyethylene-Carbon Nanotube Structure

Abstract:We report a novel method to prepare nanohybrid shish-kebab (NHSK) structure of polyethylene (PE) and carbon nanotube (CNT). Pristine CNTs without surface modification with high concentration was effectively dispersed in xylene solution by a simple shearing method, which induces the quick crystallization of PE in xylene to form a novel NHSK structure with more dense and smaller PE kebab on CNT axis. The flocculated NHSK product was transferred quickly from the xylene solution to the ethanol solution, in order to shorten the preparation time. The freeze-drying method was used in vacuum instead of high-temperature drying to avoid the aggregation of NHSK product. These improvements allow the formation of NHSK with an absolute yield of 200 mg·h−1, which is 2000 folds of that reported previously. It is favorable to apply this structured material in high performance nanocomposite, by improving the compatibility of CNTs in polymer and the interfacial force between CNTs and polymer.

Abstract:The study of shear-induced polymer crystallization has so far overlooked heterogeneous crystal nucleation of shish-kebab crystallites, which can be initiated by the stretched local polymer chains in the sporadic events of shear fracture upon sudden startup or cessation of polymer shear flow or in the memory of these events. We performed dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of a binary blend of short and long polymers and investigated the formation process of shish-kebab crystallites in a driven field with Poiseuille-flow-like gradient forces presumably generated around the shear layer of melt fracture. The results demonstrated the synergetic coil-extension and segregation behaviors of long-chain fractions upon precursor formation, which lead to a discontinuous crystalline structure along the shish. We found that the shear fracture hypothesis can reconcile several controversial experimental arguments on the precursor formation of shish-kebab crystallites in shear-induced polymer crystallization.

Abstract:A facile approach for the preparation of well-controlled crosslinked core-corona (CCC) nanoparticles is described. Firstly, a core containing multiple initiating sites was generated by deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical homopolymerisation (DE-ATRP) of divinylbenzene (DVB). Then, the multiple halide initiating sites on this hyperbranched polyDVB core were used to initiate linear chains of methyl methacrylate (MMA) via ATRP. During the second step, the pendant vinyl groups within the core were consumed, leading to generation of a crosslinked nanogel core within the final polymer structures isolated, whilst linear arms (corona) were simultaneously growing from the periphery. The structure of the resulting CCC nanoparticles was confirmed using H-1 NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography equipped with MALLS (GPC-MALLS), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Abstract:In the present work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-induced solution crystallization of N, N′-dioctyl perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI-C8) in o-dichlorobenzene was studied. It is found that the nanohybrid shish-kebab (NHSK) supramolecular structure, wherein the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) serve as the shish and PTCDI-C8 crystals are the kebabs, with regular arrangement of the kebabs can be formed. UV–vis, photoluminescence spectroscopy and XPS studies reveal that there exist strong π-π interaction between PTCDI-C8 and SWCNTs, and some PTCDI-C8 molecules are already adsorbed on SWCNTs surface prior to crystallization. This is the first example of NHSK structure formed by CNTs and organic small molecules. Nevertheless, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) cannot induce PTCDI-C8 to form NHSK structure under the same conditions. This indicates that geometric confinement may be the predominant factor affecting the orientation of the pre-adsorbed PTCDI-C8 molecules and epitaxial growth of the crystals.
Synergistic Effect of Stretched Bridging Block and Released Packing Frustration Leads to Exotic Nanostructures

Abstract:The self-assembly of amphiphilic macromolecules into various mesocrystals has attracted abiding interest. Although many interesting mesocrystals have been achieved, mesocrystals of a low coordination number (CN) such as simple cubic are rarely reported. Here we purposely design an AB-type multiblock copolymer to target exotic spherical phases of low CNs. Self-consistent field theory reveals that two sophisticated mechanisms are realized in the copolymer, that is, stretched bridging block and released packing frustration, synergistically leading to the formation of three spherical phases with extremely low CNs, including the simple cubic spheres (CN = 6), the cubic diamond spheres (CN = 4), and normally aligned hexagonal-packing spheres (6 < CN < 8) in a considerable parameter region. Moreover, we demonstrate that these exotic phases are hard to be stabilized by either of the two mechanisms individually.
Relaxation and Crystallization of Oriented Polymer Melts with Anisotropic Filler Networks

Abstract:The coexistence of nanofillers and shear flow can influence crystallization of polymer melts. However, the microscopic mechanism of the effect is not completely revealed yet. Thus, dynamic Monte Carlo simulations were used to study the effect of the filler networks formed by one-dimensional nanofillers on relaxation and crystallization of oriented polymer melts. The filler networks restrict the relaxation of oriented polymers and impose confinement effect on the chains inside the filler networks, resulting in higher orientation and lower conformational entropy of the inside chains compared to those of the outside chains. Thus, the confined inside chains have stronger crystallizability. During crystallization, the confined chains are nucleated on the filler surface and then form nanohybrid shish kebab structures. Furthermore, the effect of fillers and chain orientation closely depends on some factors, such as polymer filler interaction, filler content, and filler spacing. Our simulation results are consistent with some experimental findings. Thus, these results can provide new insights into the mechanism of crystallization of filled polymers and also guide researchers to develop new polymer nanocomposites with high performance.

Abstract:Decoration of polymers onto nanoparticles has drawn much scientific and technological interest due to the potential for directed assembly of large-scale nanoarchitectures. However, there have been no previous reports on such decoration of polymers derived from highly-ordered inorganic–organic nanolayered features that have the potential to chemically bond to the nano-reinforcement. In this work, polymers derived from octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODMS) were successfully decorated onto carbon nanofibers (CNFs) yielding unique hybrid shish-kebab structures. Interestingly, only under highly alkaline conditions were shish-kebab structures formed onto the CNFs. Chemical characterization of the polymeric shish-kebab structure was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), indicating extended hydrocarbon chains with crosslinking of the siloxane groups. For the siloxane polymer with the distinctive shish-kebab forming structure, NMR results showed that there was an incomplete reaction of siloxane groups, which may have facilitated heterogeneous crystallization of the polymer onto the Ox-CNFs. Potential applications for these unique nanohybrid structures are discussed.

Abstract:The aggregation behaviors and phase separation of binary nanoparticles immersed in semiflexible polymer brushes are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. The conformations of the binary nanoparticle-brush mixtures are very sensitive to the size ratio q = sigma(l)/sigma(s) where sigma(l) and sigma(s) are the diameters for large and small nanoparticles, respectively, and the attractive interactions epsilon(M) between the nanoparticles and polymer brushes. The phase separation of the binary nanoparticles is observed at a relatively strong attractive interaction under the effects of inter-nanoparticle depletion attractions provided by polymer brushes. Furthermore, the crystallization of small nanoparticles occurs at a strong interaction and a hexagonal close-packed-like (hcp-like) ordered structure is formed. The present results may promise a new approach for controlling the self-assembling behavior of nanoparticles and constructing a better macroscopic performance of the material.

In this research, we demonstrate the molecular chain self-assembly of tetragonal crystals under cylindrical confinement. We specifically selected poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (P4MP1) with a 41 or 72 helical conformation (usually crystallizing with a tetragonal lattice) as the model polymer. We found a coherent crystal branching of the tetragonal crystal in the P4MP1 nanorods. The unusual 45°- and 135°-{200} diffractions and the meridional 220 diffraction (from 45°-tilted crystals) have shown a uniform crystal branching between the a1-axis crystals and the 45°-tilted crystals in the rod long axis, which originates from a structural defect associated with tetragonal symmetry. Surprisingly, this chain packing defect in the tetragonal cell can be controlled to develop along the rod long axis in 2D confinement.
