Abstract:River confluences are key nodes for the transport of water, sediment, and contaminant in river networks. Revealing the distribution of specific phosphorus fractions in bed sediment at river confluences is important for ensuring water security in river networks, because each phosphorus fraction has individual physicochemical properties and ecological effects. The characteristic distributions of phosphorus fractions at river confluences are mainly influenced by hydrodynamics, bed morphology, and sediment transport. In this study, a distributed of sampling on bed sediment of a confluence of Huaihe River Basin was carried out in different seasons and under different hydrodynamic conditions, and the spatial and temporal distribution of phosphorus fractionation were assessed. Bed sediment samples were analyzed for Ca-P, Soluble and loosely bound phosphorus (S/L-P), Reductant Soluble Phosphorus (RS-P), ferrum-bound P (Fe-P), aluminium-bound P (Al-P), organic phosphorus (O-P). The results showed that the content of total phosphorus (TP) in non-flood period and flood period was 897.3 and 484.3mg/kg, respectively. Phosphorus enrichment occurred in the non-flood period but was inhibited during the flood period by coarsened bed surface, intensive hydrodynamics, high water temperature, and low DO. The average percentages of Ca-P, O-P, S/L-P, Fe-P, RS-P, Al-P were 43.6%, 36.6%, 12.0%, 2.9%, 2.8% and 2.1%, respectively, in non-flood period. The spatial distribution of Ca-P was influenced by sediment transport, with increased mixing distance in the flood period. S/L-P, RS-P, and Fe-P mainly enriched in the lateral bar, due to the low horizontal flow velocity and small bed sediment grain size. O-P mainly enriched in the scour hole, probably due to the formation of flocs after the mixing of organic phosphorus-containing suspended sediments from the two branches upstream, which settled in the scour hole. Due to the higher level of phosphorus bioavailability, the scour hole imposed a greater phosphorus exportation risk than other areas of the confluence.
