Abstract:High efficiency all phosphorescent white electroluminescence was realized by double doping of blue-light-emitting bis(2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,C2') picolinate (Flrpic) and red iridium complex Ir(DMFPQ)(2)pbm into conjugated polymer host poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO). Effects of hole-transport layer (HTL) on the performances of white polymer light-emitting diodes (WPLEDs) were investigated. First of all, PVK as the HTL was essential, because the back energy transfer from Flrpic to PFO caused by the low-lying triplet energy level of PFO was suppressed by PVK. Furthermore, performances of the WPLEDs were enhanced by introducing CBP into PVK owing to improved balance of electron and hole current. The resulting all phosphorescent WPLEDs have a peak luminous efficiency of 15.5 cd/A and a peak power efficiency of 6 lm/W. Commisssion Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.41, 0.38) were realized at a current density of 18 mA/cm(2). The obtaining of the efficient all phosphorescent white electroluminescence with PFO as host polymer will broaden the approaches of white light generation and be a big promote for the application of phosphorescent WPLEDs. High Performance Non-Doped Blue-Hazard-free Hybrid White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Stable High Color Rendering Index and Low Efficiency Roll-off

Abstract:White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), for display and lighting applications, combine features such as high performance, high color quality, low efficiency roll-off and blue-hazard-free are extremely important. In this study, we manufactured a highly efficient bluish-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) OLED. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), power efficiency (PE), and current efficiency (CE) were 16.0%, 46.2 lm/W, and 45.9 cd/A, respectively. Next, a non-doped and blue-hazard-free hybrid WOLED was prepared by employing reasonably inserting several red and yellow ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between the bluish-green TADF emitters. The device showed a maximum EQE of 18.7% and a low EQE roll-off of 7%. At 1000 cd/m(2), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 87 and a low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2759 were obtained. The result showed that bluish-green TADF material has potential applications in healthy WOLEDs without blue-hazard. Also, the strategy of inserting several long-wavelength ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between bluish-green TADF emitters with bipolar transport characteristic, which can reduce efficiency roll-off and enhance device electroluminescence efficiency, was demonstrated.
Highly Efficient Nondoped Green Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Combination of High Photoluminescence and High Exciton Utilization

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and exciton utilization efficiency are two key parameters to harvest high-efficiency electroluminekence (EL) in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). But it is not easy to simultaneously combine these two characteristics (high PL efficiency and high exciton utilization) into a fluorescent material. In this work, an efficient combination was achieved through two concepts of hybridized local and charge-transfer (CT) state (HLCT) and "hot exciton", in which the former is responsible for high PL efficiency while the latter contributes to high exciton utilization. On the basis of a tiny chemical modification in TPA-BZP, a green-light donor-acceptor molecule, we designed and synthesized CzP-BZP with this efficeient combination: of high PL efficiency of eta(PL) = 75% in the solid state and maximal exciton utilization efficiency up to 48% (especially, the internal quantum efficiency of eta(IQE) = 35% substantially exceed 25% of spin statistics limit) in OLED. The nondoped OLED of CzP=BZP exhibited an excellent performance: a green emission with a CIE coordinate of (0.34, 0.60), a maximum current efficiency of 23.99 cd A(-1), and a maximum external quanturn efficiency (EQE, eta(EQE)) of 6.95%. This combined HLCT state and "hot exciton" strategy should be a practical way to design next-generation, tow-cost, high efficiency fluorescent OLED materials.
Efficient fluorescence/phosphorescence white organic light-emitting diodes with ultra high color stability and mild efficiency roll-off

Abstract:Efficient fluorescence/phosphorescence hybrid white organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with single doped co-host structure have been fabricated. Device using 9-Naphthyl-10 -(4-triphenylamine)anthrancene as the fluorescent dopant and Ir(ppy)3 and Ir(2-phq)3 as the green and orange phosphorescent dopants show the luminous efficiency of 12.4% (17.6 lm/W, 27.5 cd/A) at 1000 cd/m2. Most important to note that the efficiency-brightness roll-off of the device was very mild. With the brightness rising up to 5000 and 10 000 cd/m2, the efficiency could be kept at 11.8% (14.0 lm/W, 26.5 cd/A) and 11.0% (11.8 lm/W, 25.0 cd/A). The Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates and color rending index (CRI) were measured to be (0.45, 0.48) and 65, respectively, and remained the same in a large range of brightness (1000–10 000 cd/m2), which is scarce in the reported white OLEDs. The performance of the device at high luminance (5000 and 10 000 cd/m2) was among the best reported results including fluorescence/phosphorescence hybrid and all-phosphorescent white OLEDs. Moreover, the CRI of the white OLED can be improved to 83 by using a yellow-green emitter (Ir(ppy)2bop) in the device.

Abstract:A white organic light-emitting diode (WOLED) consisting of multiple-emissive-layer structure was realized by combining an efficient yellow-emitting iridium complex of fluorenylpyridine with red, green and blue phosphors for color mixing. The device shows an excellent color stability with high and stable color rendering index. The peak WOLED efficiencies can reach 13.0% ph/el, 24.6cd/A and 12.4lm/W, respectively.

Abstract:A new hybrid local and charge transfer (HLCT) molecule 2TPA-PPI is obtained for constructing the high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) in this work. 2TPA-PPI possesses the sufficient emission/charge-transporting properties, thus it is used as a neat emitter achieving an efficient deep-blue OLED with very high external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 10.7%, as well as a multi-functional emitting host matrix constructing the high-performance phosphorescent OLEDs. More importantly, a high-efficiency candle light-style OLED adopting the HLCT/phosphor hybrid strategy is realized, where 2TPA-PPI acts as not only a blue emitter, but also a universal host sensitizing both yellow and red phosphors. This quasi-white OLED represents almost the highest EQE/PE level of 25.2%/49.7 lm W−1 at the practical luminance level of 1000 cd m−2 for the white OLEDs with the excellent color rendering index values of more than 80 reported.

Abstract:For all-fluorescent white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), it is a current challenge to achieve comparable device efficiency to phosphorescent devices. A novel yellow fluorophor (Y), synthesized by our group, realizes ultra-high electroluminescence performance with maximum luminance and external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaching 74820 cd/m2 and 5.65%, respectively, indicating a huge potential applications in developing high-performance all-fluorescent WOLEDs. Herein, we employ above yellow emitter Y to demonstrate a series of all-fluorescent WOLEDs, where the devices are fabricated by doping yellow emitter Y in blue-emitting thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) host of mCP:PO-T2T-forming exciplex. And white emission are realized by the combination of blue and yellow emissions from mCP:PO-T2T host and yellow emitter Y through the incomplete energy transfer. By simply adjusting the doping ratio of yellow emitter Y in mCP:PO-T2T host, the optimized all-fluorescent white device achieves high device performance with maximum current efficiency, power efficiency, and EQE reaching 20.78 cd/A, 24.25 lm/W, and 8.22%, respectively. The EQE obviously exceed the theoretical limit value of 5% for all-fluorescent WOLEDs, and is comparable to some fluorescent/phosphorescent or all-phosphorescent WOLEDs in reported literatures. The achievement of such high performance is mainly ascribed to the highly efficient exciton utilization derived from excellent yellow fluorescent emitter Y and effective reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from triplet level to singlet level in mCP:PO-T2T exciplex host.

Abstract:With the increasing performance demand from the display market, it has become ever more important to realize wide color gamut and low power consumption. Employing a phosphorescence‐sensitized fluorescence (PSF) mechanism, we introduced a narrow‐spectrum green light‐emitting layer (EML) to the state‐of‐the‐art OLED device structure suitable for mass production and investigate its effect on device performance. Compared with the reference phosphorescent device, the optimal PSF devices have achieved more than 20% efficiency improvement in the range of CIEx 0.17‐ 0.27, showing the advantages of high efficiency and high color purity.
High-Efficiency All Fluorescence White OLEDs with High Color Rendering Index by Manipulating Excitons in Co-host Recombination Layer

Abstract:All fluorescence white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are an attractive route to realize highly efficient and high color quality white light sources. However, harvesting triplet excitons in these devices remains a formidable challenge, particularly for WOLEDs involving conventional fluorescent emitters. Herein, we report a universal design strategy based on a co-host system and a cascaded exciton transfer configuration. The co-host system furnishes a broad and charge-balanced exciton generation zone, which simultaneously endows the devices with low efficiency roll-off and good color stability. A yellow TADF layer is put forward as an intermediate sensitizer layer between blue TADF EML and red fluorescent EML, which not only constructs an efficient cascaded Förster energy transfer route but also blocks triplet exciton loss channel through Dexter energy transfer. With the proposed design strategy, three-color all fluorescence WOLEDs reach a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.4% with a remarkable color rendering index (CRI) of 92 and CIE coordinates of (0.37, 0.40). Detailed optical simulation confirms the high exciton utilization efficiency. Finally, by introducing an efficient blue emitter 5Cz-TRZ, a maximum EQE of 30.1% is achieved with CIE coordinates of (0.42, 0.42) and a CRI of 84 at 1000 cd m-2. These outstanding results demonstrate the great potential of all fluorescence WOLEDs in solid-state lighting and display panels.

Abstract:A deuteration strategy enables a versatile multi‐resonance fluorescent emitter. The resulting OLED achieves pure‐green emission approaching BT 2020 gamut, high device efficiency with EQEmax of 35.2% and PEmax of 187.0 lm W−1, and long lifetime (LT50 = 3020 h @ 1000 cd m−2). In order to fulfill the demand for ultrahigh definition organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), pure‐green emitters with Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) y‐coordinate over 0.71 are in urgent demand. Meanwhile, the high device efficiency, small efficiency roll‐off, and operational lifetime also remain challenging issues. In this work, a series of narrowband pure‐green fluorescent emitters based on a double‐boron (B) doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) framework fused with naphthalene units is reported. The newly designed emitters realize green emission with peaks of 512–521 nm and extremely narrow full‐width at half‐maxima (FWHMs) of 16–17 nm in toluene solution. Utilizing these emitters in a phosphor‐sensitized fluorescence (PSF) system, the resulting OLEDs exhibit pure green emission with peaks in the range of 514–526 nm and very narrow FWHMs of 19–20 nm. Notably, the devices based on the partially deuterated emitter, DBN‐NaPh‐d, not only achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) as high as 35.2%, small efficiency roll‐off, along with a CIEy of 0.74 but also showcase impressive operational stability with a long lifetime (LT50) of over 3000 h at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m−2. This work represents one of the highest device efficiencies and superior device stability among fluorescence emitter‐based OLEDs.

Abstract:In principle, the ratio (Φ) of the maximum quantum efficiencies for electroluminescence (EL) to photoluminescence (PL) can be expected to approach unity, if the exciton (bound electron–hole pair) generated from the recombination of injected electrons and holes in OLEDs has a sufficiently weak binding energy. However, seldom are examples of Φ > 25% reported in OLEDs because of the strongly bound excitons for most organic semiconductors in nature. Here, a twisting donor–acceptor triphenylamine‐thiadiazol molecule (TPA‐NZP) exhibits fluorescent emission through a hybridized local and charge‐transfer excited state (HLCT), which is demonstrated from both fluorescent solvatochromic experiment and quantum chemical calculations. The HLCT state possesses two combined and compatible characteristics: a large transition moment from a local excited (LE) state and a weakly bound exciton from a charge transfer (CT) state. The former contributes to a high‐efficiency radiation of fluorescence, while the latter is responsible for the generation of a high fraction of singlet excitons. Using TPA‐NZP as the light‐emitting layer in an OLED, high Φ values of 93% (at low brightness) and 50% (at high brightness) are achieved, reflecting sufficient employment of the excitons in the OLED. Characterization of the EL device shows a saturated deep‐red emission with CIE coordinates of (0.67, 0.32), accompanied by a rather excellent performance with a maximum luminance of 4574 cd m−2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency (ηext) of ∼2.8%. The HLCT state is a new way to realize high‐efficiency of EL devices.
High‐Efficiency Hybrid White Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes with Extremely Low Efficiency Roll‐Off and Superior Color Stability Enabled by an Emitting System with Imidazole‐Biphenyl Derivatives

Abstract:By adopting pyrenoimidazole‐biphenyl as the non‐doped blue emissive layer and phenanthroimidazole‐biphenyl as the host of orange phosphorescent dye, the white organic light‐emitting diode achieves excellent external quantum efficiency of 23.5%, ultra‐low efficiency roll‐off of only 8.9% at 5000 cd m−2, and ultra‐high color stability with the color coordinates variation of only (0.004, 0.003) from 400 to 10000 cd m−2. Hybride white organic light‐emitting diodes (WOLEDs) have experienced great success as a prospective technology for the new generation lighting source. Nevertheless, WOLEDs exhibiting excellent effciency and good color stability at high operation brightness are still rare. Herein, a simple but efficient blue molecule, pyrenoimidazole‐biphenyl (PPyIM), which exhibits promising external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.6% and 7.2% at the luminescence of 1000 −and 5000 cd m−2 in nondoped blue OLED, is first developed. And then, phenanthroimidazole‐biphenyl (PPIM) with analogous molecular skeleton of PPyIM is chosen as the host of phosphorescent dye PO‐01, and the resulting doped device achieves excellent EQE of 26.5% at the high luminescence of 5000 cd m−2. Furthermore, adopting PPyIM as nondoped blue emissive layer, the two‐color hybrid WOLED exhibites stable warm white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.454, 0.439), color rendering index (CRI) of 45, and correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2996 K. The maximum EQE reaches 23.5%, and the EQE still maintains 21.2% even at the luminance of 5000 cd m−2. Notably, this device exhibits exceptionally stable warm white emission, the CIE coordinates variation is only (0.004, 0.003) in the wide luminance range from 400 to 10000 cd m−2, representing the best outcome for hybrid WOLEDs to date.

Constructing multifunctional deep-blue emitters with weak charge transfer excited state for high-performance non-doped blue OLEDs and single-emissive-layer hybrid white OLEDs

Abstract:Deep-blue emitter with high photoluminescence efficiency (PLQY) is highly desirable in ultra-high definition displays and white solid-state lightings. In this work, two deep-blue phenanthro[9,10]imidazole derivatives, PPIS and PPPIS, with hot exciton property are successfully developed. Compared to PPIS, the embedded phenyl bridge in PPPIS is able to effectively increase the overlap of frontier molecular orbitals. In consequence, PPPIS shows higher oscillator strength and significantly enhanced PLQY. PPPIS also achieves better electroluminescence performance in non-doped device, showing deep-blue emission with Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.153, 0.087) and the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 8.5% with minuscule efficiency roll-off. Meanwhile, when PPPIS serves as the host for phosphor PO-01, high-efficiency orange phosphorescent device is obtained with high EQEmax of 29.8% and negligible efficiency roll-off at 1000 cd/m2. Further, efficient single-emissive-layer white device is assembled via utilizing PPPIS as a blue emitter as well as the host for PO-01 simultaneously, providing warm-white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.429, 0.433) at 1000 cd/m2, the forward-viewing EQEmax of 27.2% and maximum power efficiency (PEmax) of 80.1 lm/W, respectively. Our studies can establish a viable design strategy for deep-blue emitters in high-performance non-doped blue OLEDs and hybrid WOLEDs.

Abstract:Organic blue luminescent materials play a vital role in the fabrication of full‐color displays and white lighting devices, but high‐efficiency blue emitters that meet commercial demands are still quite insufficient. Herein, the authors wish to report the design and synthesis of four bipolar deep‐blue luminogens consisting of an anthracene core and various functional groups. Their photophysical properties, electronic structures, electrochemical behavior, thermal stability, carrier transport ability, and electroluminescence performance are systematically studied. The nondoped organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) based on DPAC‐TAn‐BI radiates stable deep‐blue light [Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIEx,y) = 0.15, 0.15] with a high external quantum efficiency (ηext) of 5.81%. Moreover, efficient two‐color hybrid warm white OLEDs are achieved using DPAC‐TAn‐BI neat film as a blue‐emitting layer, providing an excellent ηext of 27.6%, a small efficiency roll‐off of 2.9% at 1000 cd m−2, and ultra‐stable emission spectra with tiny CIEx,y variation of (0.01, 0.01) from 100 to 10 000 cd m−2. These results demonstrate that the deep‐blue luminogens are strong candidates for applications in blue and white OLEDs.

Abstract:A blue delayed fluorescence molecule (2PCz‐XT) that can sensitize green, orange, and red phosphorescent emitters efficiently is developed. Hybrid white organic light‐emitting diodes with a high external quantum efficiency (26.8%), high color rendering index (83), and high device operational stability are realized by ultra‐thin design of delayed fluorescence 2PCz‐XT sensitized phosphorescent layers. In consideration of energy economization and light quality, concurrently attaining high external quantum efficiency (ηext) and high color rendering index (CRI) is of high significance for the commercialization of hybrid white organic light‐emitting diodes (WOLEDs) but is challenging. Herein, a blue luminescent molecule (2PCz‐XT) consisting of a xanthone acceptor and two 3,6‐diphenylcarbazole donors is prepared, which exhibits strong delayed fluorescence, short delayed fluorescence lifetime, and excellent electroluminescence property, and can sensitize green, orange, and red phosphorescent emitters efficiently. By employing 2PCz‐XT as sensitizer and phosphorescent emitters as dopants, efficient two‐color and three‐color WOLED architectures with ultra‐thin phosphorescent emitting layers (EMLs) are proposed and constructed. By incorporating a thin interlayer to modulate exciton recombination zone and reduce exciton loss, high‐performance three‐color hybrid WOLEDs are finally achieved, providing a high ηext of 26.8% and a high CRI value 83 simultaneously. Further configuration optimization realizes a long device operational lifetime. These WOLEDs with ultra‐thin phosphorescent EMLs are among the state‐of‐the‐art hybrid WOLEDs in the literature, demonstrating the success and applicability of the proposed device design for developing robust hybrid WOLEDs with superb efficiency and color quality.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials can be well utilized to fabricate high efficiency blue fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to its fast reverse intersystem crossing (hRISC) from high-lying triplet state (Tn2) to low-lying singlet state (S1) and high photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency in solid film, which should be conducive to the preparation of high efficiency white OLEDs (WOLEDs). In this paper, we fabricated high efficiency two-color and four-color hybrid WOLEDs based on an AIEgen of 4′-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-5′phenyl-[1,1′:2′,1′′-terphenyl]-4-carbonitrile (TPB-AC) as the blue emitter and host of yellow phosphor, and the efficiency and efficiency roll-off were greatly improved by incorporating a triplet-triplet fusion (TTF) layer in TPB-AC blue emitter. Finally, The two-color WOLED exhibited the low turn-on voltage of 2.6V, and the maximum EQE, CE, and PE of 23.2%, 73.2 cd A-1, and 78.7 lm W-1, respectively. The CE, PE and EQE yet remained at 21.1%, 63.2 cd A-1, and 58.3 lm W−1 at the luminance of 1000 cd m−2, respectively, achieving an extremely low efficiency roll-off. The optimized four-color hybrid WOLED also showed the maximum EQE, CE and PE of 24.9%, 49.6 cd A-1, and 51.9 lm W-1 with low efficiency roll-off and CRI was over 85. Our results fully demonstrate the potential application value of AIEgens in the preparation of high-performance WOLEDs.

Abstract:Despite that the majority of practical organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) still rely on blue fluorophors with low triplet (T1) for creating blue light, hybrid white OLEDs based on low T1 blue fluorophors are still much lagged behind in power efficiency. Here, "ideal" hybrid WOLEDs with recorded efficiency as well as low roll-off, good color-stability and long lifetime were realized by utilizing the bipolar mixed materials as the host of green phosphor as well as the spacer to reduce T1 trap, while blue fluorophors with p-type delayed fluorescence to recycle the trapped T1. An electron transport material with both high electron mobility and good exciton confinement ability was used to boost the TTA efficiency. Hybrid WOLEDs with maximum current efficiency, external quantum efficiency and power efficiency of 49.6 cd/A, 19.1%, and 49.3 lm/W, respectively, together with a high color rendering index of 80 and a half lifetime of over 7000 h at an initial luminescence of 1000 cd/m(2) were realized, manifesting the high potential of the strategy.

Abstract:We report hybrid white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) based on yellow phosphorescence of Iridium (III) bis(4-phenylthieno[3, 2-c]pyridinato-N, C2′)acetylacetonate (PO-01) and blue fluorescence of p-bis (p-N,N-diphenyl-amino-styryl) benzene (DSA-Ph). By introducing appropriate thickness of tris (phenylpyrazole) Iridium [Ir(ppz)3] as interlayer between the adjacent emission layers, taking advantage of the assistance electron-transporting behavior of guest molecules, efficient WOLEDs with negligible efficiency roll-off and high color stability are obtained. The best device shows a peak current efficiency of 21.0cd/A at 2, 300cd/m2 and the value can be maintained as high as 20.1cd/A at 9, 300cd/m2. Furthermore, the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinate of the corresponding device only changes marginally from (0.41, 0.46) to (0.40, 0.46) over 103–104cd/m2.

Abstract:We have demonstrated white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) based on a yellow phosphorescence iridium complex and an efficient blue fluorescence. The property of the blue fluorescence is studied and the pure blue device can obtain a peak current efficiency (CE) of 8.5cd/A. The best obtained WOLED shows a peak CE of 24.7cd/A at 1000cd/m2 with Commission Internationale De L'Eclairage coordinate of (0.44, 0.48), while WOLEDs based on different architectures exhibit good color stability.
