Abstract:(Ce,Cr)(x)O-2/MOy (M=Ti, V, Nb, Mo, W, La, respectively) mixed oxides are synthesized by deposition precipitation method, and evaluated for total oxidation of gaseous 1,2-dichloroethane, a typical chlorinated organic pollutant. The characterization results show that there exists strong metal-support interaction or synergistic effect between (Ce,Cr)(x)O-2 and MOy. The catalytic performances of these catalysts can be related to the nature of each MOy support, the crystal structure and composition, the surface elements distribution and the diverse redox properties of (Ce,Cr)(x)O-2/MOy. The improved redox property, as well as the increased content of Ce3+ and Cr6+ species on the surface can enhance the catalytic performances of the catalysts. Especially, (Ce,Cr)(x)O-2/Nb2O5 exhibits the best catalytic performance. (Ce,Cr)(x)O-2/Nb2O5 also represents high durability for 1,2-dichloroethane oxidation during the long-term continuous test. Moreover, though the presence of water or benzene in the reaction system slightly suppresses 1,2-dichloroethane oxidation, the catalytic activity can be recovered by the cut of water, while a little deactivation is found if benzene is removed away, since coke has been deposited on the catalyst surface by the combustion of benzene. Abstract:A series of (Ce, Cr)xO2/Nb2O5 catalysts with different (Ce, Cr)xO2 to Nb2O5 mass ratios were synthesized by the deposition-precipitation method for use in deep catalytic oxidation of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE), which is one of the typical chlorinated volatile organic compound pollutants. The textural properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, UV-Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The surface acidity and the redox properties were characterized by ammonia temperature-programmed desorption and H2 temperature-programmed reduction, respectively. The results show that the addition of a proper amount of (Ce, Cr)xO2 over Nb2O5 significantly improves the intrinsic catalytic activity towards the deep oxidation of DCE, and only a very small amount of C2H3Cl is detected as the byproduct of the oxidation process. Further study reveals the existence of an obvious synergistic effect between Nb2O5, with abundant strong acid sites, and (Ce, Cr)xO2, with strong oxidation sites, as the strong acid sites of Nb2O5 promote the adsorption and dehydrochlorination of DCE, while the strong oxidation sites of (Ce, Cr)xO2 contribute to the deep oxidation of the reactant, intermediates, and byproducts.

Abstract:The effect of various parameters on the catalytic oxidation of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCBz) present in simulated flue gas was investigated. A commercial V2O5-WO3/nano-TiO2 catalyst was used and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2-physisorption and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The 1,2-DCBz conversion efficiency was increased significantly with higher temperature and lower gas hourly space velocity (GHSV). Different influence levels of HCl on catalytic oxidation were found at lower and higher GHSV. The influence of HCl is irreversible due to the formation of volatile metal oxidochlorides, resulting in a decrease of the number of active sites.

Abstract:Developing efficacious catalysts with superior Cl resistance and polychlorinated byproduct inhibition capability is crucial for realizing the environmentally friendly purification of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). Activating CVOC molecules and desorbing Cl species by modulating the metal-oxygen property is a promising strategy to fulfill these. Herein, a bifunctional CoRu/Al2O3 catalyst with synergistic Co and Ru interactions (Ru-O-Co species) was rationally fabricated, which possesses abundant surface Co2+ and Ru delta+ sites and collaboratively facilitates the activation of lattice oxygen (O2-) and molecular oxygen (O-2 -> O2- -> O-), accelerating 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) decomposition via the reaction route of enolic species -> aldehydes -> carboxylate/carbonate. Furthermore, CoRu/Al2O3 stimulates 1,2-DCE oxidation under humid conditions as H2O molecules can be easily activated to active *OH (potential oxidizing agent) over Ru species, accelerating C-Cl dissociation and Cl desorption and promoting the transformation of catecholate-type (C=O) species to easily oxidizable carboxylic acid (COOH) species, remarkably suppressing the formation of hazardous CCl4 and CHCl2CH2Cl. This study provides critical insights into the development of bifunctional catalysts to synergistically activate surface oxygen species and H2O molecules for industrial CVOC stable and efficient elimination.

Abstract:Chlorobenzene (CB) inhibits SCR activity of V-based catalysts at low temperature, though the adsorption amount is small. NH3 adsorption increases due to the break in the C-Cl bond during CB oxidation. The dissociated Cl- ions provide extra Bronsted acid sites, leading to the formation of inactive NH4Cl. Ce and Mn improve dechlorination, forming more NH4Cl on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:There remain considerable challenges for Cs-based catalysts in gas-phase dehydrochlorination of 1,1,2-trichloroethane (TCE) due to their poor catalytic performance and harsh reaction temperature requirements. In this work, we report a novel supported ionic liquid (IL) phase Cs-based system and evaluate its catalytic performance and mechanism, combining the kinetic and DFT calculations. The optimal Cs-IL/SiO 2 catalyst achieved the TCE conversion of 60% and the selectivity to 1,1-Dichloroethylene (VDC) of 86% under the mild temperature of 200 °C. It is demonstrated that IL additives can significantly improve the dispersion of Cs species during the catalyst preparation and evaluation process. Moreover, IL promotes the activation of TCE and enhances the desorption efficiency of HCl, which is the main reason for its high activity. The selectivity is improved by changing the adsorption behaviors of the products, which ensures the preferential formation of the main product VDC. The enhanced activity and selectivity of Cs-IL/SiO 2 suggest a promising candidate for dehydrochlorination reaction.

Abstract:Enhancing chlorine and water resistance and suppressing by-product generation are crucial issues in the catalytic degradation of CVOCs. In this paper, surface acid modified (sulfurized and phosphorized) CoMnO x rhombic dodecahedra catalysts were synthesized for the deep destruction of o-Dichloroethane (o-DCB), considering its better reducibility, abundant acid sites, excellent mass transfer and higher specific surface area. The strong interaction between Co and Mn in the acid-modified CoMnO x stimulated the efficient production of active Co 3+ , Mn 4+ and oxygen species, which considerably promoted C-H bond and C-Cl bond cleavage. Acid etching also creates a rich surface defect structure that promotes the exposure of more reactive sites and facilitates the adsorption of reactant molecules. Furthermore, we found that the acid sites of the prepared CoMnO x -TAA materials effectively inhibited by-product formation and were highly selective for HCl. TPSR analysis gave the distribution of the reaction products and further confirmed that the final products were CO 2 and HCl. More importantly, CoMnO x -TAA exhibited excellent water and chloride resistance. Moreover, EPR characterization confirmed a significant increase in the number of oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface after acid modification of CoMnO x . TPD indicated that the modified catalyst possessed abundant weak and medium acid sites. The formation pathway and reaction mechanism of oxidative decomposition were also studied by in-situ FTIR and DFT calculations. This work provides promising candidates and new insights into the industrial catalytic degradation of o-DCB.

In this study, Ru- and Nb-co-modified CeO2 catalysts were designed to achieve excellent activity, stability, and CO2 selectivity in the catalytic oxidation of 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC). The formation of Nb-O-Ce bonds was observed to enhance the surface acidic sites, thereby improving HCl selectivity and reducing the production of chlorinated byproducts. Meanwhile, it inhibits the formation of Ru-O-Ce and promotes the generation of highly dispersed RuO2 particles on the surface, enhancing the redox properties and mobility of the surface oxygen, thus increasing CO2 selectivity. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results revealed that chlorine species preferentially attach to Nb species rather than to oxygen vacancies on the Ru/Nb/CeO2 catalyst. This allows more alkane groups to oxidize to formate on the oxygen vacancies, reducing byproduct concentration. Additionally, the oxidation of alkane groups to carboxylic acids is initiated on the Nb species, completing a comprehensive oxidation process under the synergistic effect of RuO2.

Abstract:Ru-based catalysts with increased attention for CVOC purification still have huge challenges in promoting their low-temperature activity and durability. Here, a Cr-modified RuO2/TiO2 catalyst was fabricated and employed for 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) destruction. The synergy of Cr2O3 and RuO2/TiO2 enhances the exposure of surface Ru, generating abundant reducible Cr6+ and Ru4+ species and chemically adsorbed oxygen, which promote the activity and CO2/HCl selectivity in 1,2-DCE decomposition evidently. 1,2-DCE primarily activates on the Lewis acid sites (LAS) over RuO2/Cr2O3/TiO2 with C-Cl cleavage. Meanwhile, C-C cleavage occurs along with the dehydrochlorination and chlorination reactions. The presence of Cr2O3 greatly improves the LAS concentration and redox ability of RuO2/TiO2, accelerating the deep destruction of 1,2-DCE and inhibiting the formation of CH2Cl2, C2HCl3 and CHCl3. Cr species with superior chlorine resistance elevate the durability of RuO2/Cr2O3/TiO2 under simulated conditions toward H2O, SO2, and chlorine species, making it a promising candidate for industrial CVOC catalytic degradation.

Abstract:Alumina supported Pd-Ag and (Cu) bimetallic catalysts (denoted as sr-Pd-Ag/Al2O3 or sr-Pd-Cu/Al2O3) with varied Pd/Ag (or Cu) ratios were prepared using the surface reduction method, and the gas-phase catalytic hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane over the catalysts were investigated. For comparison, Pd-Ag bimetallic catalysts were prepared by the conventional co-impregnation method (denoted as im-Pd-Ag/Al2O3). The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and CO chemisorption. Characterization results indicated that surface reduction led to selective deposition of metallic Ag on the surface of Pd particles, while Pd and Ag just disorderly mixed in the catalyst prepared by impregnation method. Therefore, sr-Pd-Ag/Al2O3 exhibited a higher ethylene selectivity than im-Pd-Ag/Al2O3 for hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane at a similar Ag loading amount. Moreover, among sr-Pd-Ag/Al2O3, sr-Pd-Cu/Al2O3 and im-Pd-Ag/Al2O3 catalysts, the ethylene selectivity decreased over these catalysts following the order: sr-Pd-Ag/Al2O3 > sr-Pd-Cu/Al2O3 > im-Pd-Ag/Al2O3. The present results indicate that surface reduction can be used as a potential method to synthesize catalyst with enhanced ethylene selectivity in hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane. Catalytic Total Oxidation of 1,2-Dichloroethane over Highly Dispersed Vanadia Supported on CeO2 Nanobelts

Abstract:CeO2 nanobelts were synthesized via a facile aqueous-phase precipitation route under mild conditions (template-free and non-hydrothermal), and then the highly dispersed vanadia catalysts with a wide range of VOx loadings were prepared by a conventional incipient-wetness impregnation method. The target VOx/CeO2 catalysts were characterized in detail and used in catalytic combustion of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE). The results revealed that the monolayer dispersed VOx (6.0%VOx/CeO2) exhibited the most outstanding initial and stable activities, however, the main product containing carbon was CO2 not desired CO2. A reaction mechanism of DCE total oxidation was proposed based on the study of TPSR and in situ FTIR. The first step of this mechanism was considered to be a dissociative adsorption of C-Cl bonds on Lewis acid sites (such as Ce4+/3+, V5+/4+ or Ce3+-O2--V5+) via Cl abstraction, and then the dissociated DCE can be oxidized directly to CO2 by surface active oxygen species over pure CeO2. Whereas, over VOx/CeO2 catalysts, the formation of intermediate acetaldehyde was a key step via C-H bond activation and hydrogen transfer on VOx species, subsequently, partially oxidized to CO by the lattice oxygen of VOx. Abstract:Ru/Ce x Al y catalysts were synthesized with impregnation of RuCl3 aqueous solution on Ce x Al y (Al2O3-CeO2) and used in 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) oxidation. Characterization by X-ray diffraction, Raman, NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), CO2-TPD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and H2-temperature-programmed reduction indicates that CeO2 exists as a form of face-centered cubic fluorite structure, whereas the chemical states and the structure of Ru species are dependent on the Ce content. The reducibility and acidity of catalysts increase with Ce/Ce + Al ratio. However, the latter is promoted only in a Ce/Ce + Al range of 0-0.25 and then decreases quickly. Ru/Ce x Al y catalysts have considerable activity for 1,2-DCE combustion. TOFRu of 1,2-DCE oxidation increases with strong acid, which is ascribed to a synergy of reducibility and acidity. Ru greatly inhibits the chlorination through the decreases in both Cl deposition and CH2=CHCl formation. High stability of Ru/Ce10Al90 maintains at 280 °C for at least 25 h with CO2 selectivity of 99% or higher. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicates that 1,2-DCE dissociates to form ClCH2-CH2O- species, which is an intermediate species for the production of CH3CHO and CH2=CHCl, the former responsible for deep oxidation.
Comparative Studies of Phosphate-Modified CeO2 and Al2O3 for Mechanistic Understanding of Dichloromethane Oxidation and Chloromethane Formation

Abstract:A phosphate-modified CeO2 nanosheet as a promising catalyst presenting high activity, durability, and selectivity for catalytic oxidation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) was used to investigate mechanisms of dichloromethane (DCM) oxidation and monochloromethane (MCM) formation by comparison with Al2O3-based catalysts, and CeO2-based catalysts showed a higher activity for DCM oxidation and lower selectivity for MCM. A series of well-designed experiments including various isotopic experiments revealed that an acid-base pair catalysis was involved, that is, DCM mainly dissociated on Lewis acid sites and then dehydrochlorinated through hydroxyl groups/Bronsted acid sites, while the basicity was intrinsic to the generation of MCM via a hydride transfer reaction between DCM activated on basic sites and DCM dissociated on Lewis acid sites. Moreover, the superior redox ability could suppress the formation of MCM by a rapid catalytic oxidation but prompt the possible formation of Cl-2 and polychlorinated byproducts.

Abstract:Developing economical and robust catalysts for the highly selective and stable destruction of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) is a great challenge. Here, hollow nanosphere-like VOx/CeO2 catalysts with different V/Ce molar ratios were fabricated and adopted for the destruction of1,2–dichloroethane (1,2–DCE). The V0.05Ce catalyst possessed superior catalytic activity, reaction selectivity, and chlorine resistance owing to a large number of oxygen vacancies, excellent low-temperature redox ability, and chemically adsorbed oxygen (O− and O2−) species mobility. Typical chlorinated byproducts (CHCl3, CCl4, C2HCl3, and C2H3Cl3) derived from the cleavage of C–Cl and C–C bonds of 1,2–DCE were detected, which could be effectively inhibited by the abundant acid sites and the strong interactions of VOx species with CeO2. The presence of water vapor benefited the activation and deep destruction of 1,2–DCE over V0.05Ce owing to the efficient removal of Cl species from the catalyst surface.

Abstract:A BaF(p-BDC)0.5 catalyst was prepared by solid state reaction at room temperature with Ba(OH)2 as precursor, NH4F as F source, and H2(p-BDC) as organic ligand. The calcined samples were used as catalysts for dehydrochlorination of 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane to generate vinylidene fluoride (VDF) at 350 °C. Commercial production of VDF is carried out at 600–700 °C. Clearly, pyrolysis of the BaF(p-BDC)0.5 catalyst provided a promising way to prepare VDF at low temperatures. Prior to calcination, the activity of the BaF(p-BDC)0.5 catalyst was low. Following calcination at high temperatures, BaF(p-BDC)0.5 decomposed to BaF2 and BaCO3, and then the catalyst was chlorinated and fluorinated to BaClF, which showed high activity and stable VDF selectivity for dehydrochlorination of 1-Chloro-1,1-Difluoroethane to VDF.

A comparison of nanoscale and large-size BaCl2-modified Er2O3 catalysts for the selective oxidation of ethane to ethylene

Abstract:The nanoscale Er2O3 and 30 mol% BaCl2/Er2O3 catalysts prepared by a modified sol-gel method have been compared with their large-size counterparts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODE) to ethylene. The nanoscale catalysts showed better catalytic performance than the corresponding large-size ones, especially at lower reaction temperatures and shorter contact times. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the extent of cubic Er2O3 lattice expansion in nanoscale BaCl2/Er2O3 was larger than that in the large-size one and that more defects were formed in the nanoscale catalyst. We detected further enlargement of the cubic Er2O3 lattice in the nanoscale 30 mol% BaCl2/Er2O3 catalyst during the first 40 h of on-stream reaction. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation demonstrated that after 40 h surface chlorine composition on nanoscale 30 mol% BaCl2/Er2O3 increased slightly, while that on the large-size catalyst decreased. O-2 temperature-programmed desorption studies illustrated that, compared to the large-size catalysts, there were more oxygen species desorbed from the nanoscale ones. In situ Raman studies indicated that the reduction in particle size was beneficial for the activation of oxygen molecules. Taking into consideration the catalytic activity and Raman results, we suggest that dioxygen species such as O-2(delta-) (0<delta<1), O-2(-), O-2(n-) (1<n<2), and O-2(2-) are responsible for the selective oxidation of C2H6 to C2H4. Effect of Acid Sites Modification on the Catalytic Combustion of 1,2-Dichloroethane: Revealing the Synergy Between NbOx and CeO2

Abstract:1,2-Dichloroethane are primarily sourced from the emissions of the chlor-alkali industry, resulting in severe pollution of soil, air, and water. In this work, Nb/CeO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method, and their performance for EDC oxidation was evaluated. The addition of Nb improved the activity, selectivity, and stability of CeO2. Nb was highly dispersed on CeO2 surface in the form of NbOx, and partially entered the lattice of CeO2. This caused lattice distortion and more surface defects, thereby increasing the number of oxygen vacancies. Nb-O-Ce bonds formed in between Nb and CeO2 weakened the Ce--O bonds and enhanced lattice oxygen mobility. The presence of NbOx increased the number of Lewis acid (Nb--O) and Bronsted acid (Nb-OH) sites, which facilitated the cleavage of C-Cl and C-C bonds. Increased acidity promoted the removal of Cl species in the form of HCl and effectively mitigated the chlorine poisoning of CeO2. In-situ DRIFTS results indicated that EDC oxidation on Nb/CeO2 catalysts followed a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism and progressed via the pathway of alcoholate-* formate/methoxy-* COx.
