Abstract:Traditional economics research method can't match it's demand faced with more and more complex economy problems,the computer simulation method to make up the insufficiency of traditional economics;Agent-based computational economics(ACE) has become a branch of Economics.This paper analyses five frontier development research areas of ACE.It includes different agent learn and adaptive characteristics,interactive complex network models,tests and optimizations of ACE models,modeling of different markets and policy making,these areas is the core of contemporary economics.The survey show that the most attractive characteristics of ACE is it can analyses economy evolutionary process and its macro-"emergency" character by research heterogeneous agents behavior.It reveals the contradiction between the micro and macro economy,and almost each area of economics can use ACE.ACE has put influence on deep innovation not only of economics research but also thinking way of economics and research paradigm.

Abstract:Agent-based computational economics (ACE) is the computational study of economies modeled as evolving systems of autonomous interacting agents. Thus, ACE is a specialization of economics of the basic complex adaptive systems paradigm. This study outlines the main objectives and defining characteristics of the ACE methodology and discusses similarities and distinctions between ACE and artificial life research. Eight ACE research areas are identified, and a number of publications in each area are highlighted for concrete illustration. Open questions and directions for future ACE research are also considered. The study concludes with a discussion of the potential benefits associated with ACE modeling, as well as some potential difficulties.

Abstract:The history of research in finance and economics has been widely impacted by the field of Agent-based Computational Economics (ACE). While at the same time being popular among natural science researchers for its proximity to the successful methods of physics and chemistry for example, the field of ACE has also received critics by a part of the social science community for its lack of empiricism. Yet recent trends have shifted the weights of these general arguments and potentially given ACE a whole new range of realism. At the base of these trends are found two present-day major scientific breakthroughs: the steady shift of psychology towards a hard science due to the advances of neuropsychology, and the progress of artificial intelligence and more specifically machine learning due to increasing computational power and big data. These two have also found common fields of study in the form of computational neuroscience, and human-computer interaction, among others. We outline here the main lines of a computational research study of collective economic behavior via Agent-Based Models (ABM) or Multi-Agent System (MAS), where each agent would be endowed with specific cognitive and behavioral biases known to the field of neuroeconomics, and at the same time autonomously implement rational quantitative financial strategies updated by machine learning. We postulate that such ABMs would offer a whole new range of realism.

Abstract:This paper addresses issues related to the development of a computational theory and corresponding methods for studying complex socioeconomic systems. We propose a novel computational framework called ACP (Artificial societies, Computational experiments, and Parallel systems), targeting at creating an effective computational theory and developing a systematic methodological framework for socioeconomic studies. The basic idea behind the ACP approach is: 1) to model the complex socioeconomic systems as artificial societies using agent techniques in a "bottom-up” fashion; 2) to utilize innovative computing technologies and make computers as experimental laboratories for investigating socioeconomic problems; and 3) to achieve an effective management and control of the focal complex socioeconomic system through parallel executions between artificial and actual socioeconomic systems. An ACP-based experimental platform called MacroEconSim has been discussed, which can be used for modeling, analyzing, and experimenting on macroeconomic systems. A case study on economic inflation is also presented to illustrate the key research areas and algorithms integrated in this platform.

Abstract:Agent-based computational economics has considerable achievements. However, it has gone too quickly into a direction similar to the one of models based on solely analytical—as opposed to algorithmic—dynamic systems of difference equations. An increasingly large focus has been put on matching moments of real-world time series of data, a set of stylised facts, or on estimation. Reasons why this is not desirable are discussed. Firstly, both estimation and inference from models will be biased, unless they represent the real data-generating processes. Secondly, surrendering the attempt to incorporate realistic microfoundations is not only against the original ACE agenda, but also is subject to a form of Lucas critique. Thirdly, characteristics of complex systems, especially differences between feedback loops and emergent phenomena that characterise systems of various levels of complexity, undermine the justification of building structurally simplistic models. That is, an attempt at reducing the interaction of many different sectors, populated with agents using various decision rules will yield information loss, i.e., some phenomena by definition are possible to emerge only in systems of higher levels of complexity. A different research agenda is proposed, with the aim of systematically analysing and uncovering the mechanisms, feedback loops and impact channels of complex multi-sectoral economic and financial systems.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper, the field of agent-based modeling (ABM) is discussed focusing on the role of generative theories, aiming at explaining phenomena by growing them. After a brief analysis of the major strengths of the field some crucial weaknesses are analyzed. In particular, the generative power of ABM is found to have been underexploited, as the pressure for simple recipes has prevailed and shadowed the application of rich cognitive models. In the second part of the paper, the renewal of interest for Computational Social Science (CSS) is focused upon, and several of its variants, such as deductive, generative, and complex CSS, are identified and described. In the concluding remarks, an interdisciplinary variant, which takes after ABM, reconciling it with the quantitative one, is proposed as a fundamental requirement for a new program of the CSS.

Abstract:Nowadays, we are surrounded by a large number of complex phenomena ranging from rumor spreading, social norms formation to rise of new economic trends and disruption of traditional businesses. To deal with such phenomena,Complex Adaptive System (CAS) framework has been found very influential among social scientists,especially economists. As the most powerful methodology of CAS modeling, Agent-based modeling (ABM) has gained a growing application among academicians and practitioners. ABMs show how simple behavioral rules of agents and local interactions among them at micro-scale can generate surprisingly complex patterns at macro-scale. Despite a growing number of ABM publications, those researchers unfamiliar with this methodology have to study a number of works to understand (1) the why and what of ABMs and (2) the ways they are rigorously developed. Therefore, the major focus of this paper is to help social sciences researchers,especially economists get a big picture of ABMs and know how to develop them both systematically and rigorously.

Abstract:To investigate agents' intelligent acts in a multi-dimensional space and analyze their mental status in different granular metric scales or affordance, a new concept ecological calculus for multi-agent systems is put forward based on essential standpoints of ecology and universal logics. Qualitative and quantitative models of ecological calculus for a general multi-agent systems' framework are presented based on generalized modeling methods for large systems cybernetics. And a use case in natural language processing with a generic algorithm is applied to prove the validity of the frame. Experiments show that not only does the framework help us to understand and interpret many natural phenomena such as fuzzy concepts or propositions, but also to solve complex agents' interaction problems such as negotiation and competition.

Abstract:Circular Economy (CE) is a popular topic for governments and businesses around the world; yet, only a few comprehensive and economy-wide frameworks exist, and the consequences of the CE on economic systems stay unclear. With this systematic review, we put under scrutiny the existing contributions to Circular Economy (CE) that apply the Agent-based modelling methodology. There is an open gap in the CE literature regarding the use of ABM. The research question that guides this systematic review concerns the potential benefit of ABM for CE and how to use this methodology in the context of CE. We put in evidence three thematic areas, two agents and one process, namely producers , i.e. firms and industrial systems, consumers , i.e. households and waste disposal, and the diffusion of innovation . We infer that the former three thematic strands of literature can be further synthetized together to form a general model of the Circular Economy. This development is crucial to properly evaluate how the agent's heterogeneity affects the diffusion and the consequences of the adoption of CE practices on the economy. Research has widely applied ABM simulations to consider the impact of heterogeneity among individuals and their behavioural interactions on the evolution of complex systems, yet very little did it systematically about CE. Our results complement those of Computable General Equilibrium models. The review provides an interpretative framework, suggests valuable future research directions within the new comprehensive thematic area, and contributes to the theoretical and managerial discussion on agent-based modelling in the circular economy.

Abstract:Abstract In this review we discuss advances in the agent-based modeling of economic and social systems. We show the state of the art of the heuristic design of agents and how behavioral economics and laboratory experiments have improved the modeling of agent behavior. We further discuss how economic networks and social systems can be modeled and we discuss novel methodology and data sources. Lastly, we present an overview of estimation techniques to calibrate and validate agent-based models and show avenues for future research.

Abstract:The essay primarily illustrates CAS (complex adaptive system) briefly, and demonstrates the creation ofEcho modelby six program flows. In view of the agent characteristic, the agent-based building model method is proposed from bottom to top after analyzing the economic system as complex adaptive system and combining the thought and method of the complex adaptive system theory with the Game theory, which can explain the bounded rationality and the asymmetrical information instead of the traditional economic theory. The method is based on the direct computer model and gives examples and corresponding simulation. The study demonstrates that the complex adaptive system can well explain the dynamic equilibrium and emergence, and offers a new way to deal with the economic problems.

Abstract:The current economic crisis has provoked an active response from the interdisciplinary scientific community. As a result many papers suggesting what can be improved in understanding of the complex socio-economics systems were published. Some of the most prominent papers on the topic include (Bouchaud, 2009; Farmer and Foley, 2009; Farmer et al, 2012; Helbing, 2010; Pietronero, 2008). These papers share the idea that agent-based modeling is essential for the better understanding of the complex socio-economic systems and consequently better policy making. Yet in order for an agent-based model to be useful it should also be analytically tractable, possess a macroscopic treatment (Cristelli et al, 2012). In this work we shed a new light on our research group's contributions towards understanding of the correspondence between the inter-individual interactions and collective behavior. We also provide some new insights into the implications of the global and local interactions, the leadership and the predator-prey interactions in the complex socio-economic systems.

Abstract:Recently, the research on irregular emergent events management had become the hot field in complex system modeling and simulation. In order to solve the social computation in irregular emergent events, A-C-P (Artificial Society, Computational Experiments, Parallel Execution) is the best solution. We bring the multi-paradigm modeling theory to the modeling and simulation for artificial society. Model transformation is used to cover the multi-field in artificial society, Co-simulation is used to connect the heterogeneous system in computation experiments. We give the Multi-Paradigm Modeling based computation experiment framework. The advantages of the application are summarized in the end.

Abstract:Economic complexity offers a potentially powerful paradigm to understand key societal issues and challenges of our time. The underlying idea is that growth, development, technological change, income inequality, spatial disparities, and resilience are the visible outcomes of hidden systemic interactions. The study of economic complexity seeks to understand the structure of these interactions and how they shape various socioeconomic processes. This emerging field relies heavily on big data and machine learning techniques. This brief introduction to economic complexity has three aims. The first is to summarize key theoretical foundations and principles of economic complexity. The second is to briefly review the tools and metrics developed in the economic complexity literature that exploit information encoded in the structure of the economy to find new empirical patterns. The final aim is to highlight the insights from economic complexity to improve prediction and political decision-making. Institutions including the World Bank, the European Commission, the World Economic Forum, the OECD, and a range of national and regional organizations have begun to embrace the principles of economic complexity and its analytical framework. We discuss policy implications of this field, in particular the usefulness of building recommendation systems for major public investment decisions in a complex world.

Abstract:Agent-based modeling is a powerful simulation technique to understand the collective behavior and microscopic interaction in complex financial systems. Recently, the concept for determining the key parameters of the agent-based models from empirical data instead of setting them artificially was suggested. We first review several agent-based models and the new approaches to determine the key model parameters from historical market data. Based on the agents' behaviors with heterogenous personal preferences and interactions, these models are successful to explain the microscopic origination of the temporal and spatial correlations of the financial markets. We then present a novel paradigm combining the big-data analysis with the agent-based modeling. Specifically, from internet query and stock market data, we extract the information driving forces, and develop an agent-based model to simulate the dynamic behaviors of the complex financial systems.

Abstract:The increasing availability of data sources and analysis tools borrowed from computer science and physical science have sharply changed traditional methodologies of social sciences, leading to a new branch named computational socioeconomics, which studies various phenomena in socioeconomic development by using quantitative methods based on large-scale real-world data. Sited on recent publications, this perspective will introduce three representative methods: (i) natural data analyses, (ii) large-scale online experiments, and (iii) integration of big data and surveys. This perspective ends up with in-depth discussion on the limitations and challenges of the above-mentioned emerging methods.
