Abstract:Unified power flow controller with fault current limiter (UPFC-FCL) is a novel flexible AC transmission system device,which can effectively cope with the short circuit fault in power grid. Integrating bridge type fault current limiter based on integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) with UPFC, the circuit topology of novel UPFC-FCL is established and its working principle of limiting short-circuit current is analyzed, and then its mathematical model is built. Based on power system current limiting index, security margin of UPFC power module,IGCT voltage and current limit value of FCL module and limit value of DC voltage, the parameter design method for DC capacitor and DC current limiting inductance is given. The working performance and main component parameters of the novel UPFC-FCL are compared with those of existing devices. Results of PSCAD/EMTDC based comparative simulation show that using the novel UPFC-FCL the short-circuit fault clearing time is decreased, component parameters are reduced and the impact of short-circuit current on power grid is alleviated.
