Abstract:In this paper, we study the relation with the weak solution of certain elliptic equation of second order and unique continuation at the boundary of connected, convex domains. And we prove the conjecture on [4] is also true at this case.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the strong unique continuation property for a class of fourth order elliptic equations involving strongly singular potentials. Our argument is to establish some Hardy-Rellich type inequalities with boundary terms and introduce an Almgren’s type frequency function to show some doubling conditions for the solutions to the above-mentioned equations.

Abstract:We study the quantitative unique continuation on the boundary for solutions of elliptic equations with Neumann boundary conditions for bounded potentials and boundary potentials on compact manifolds with boundary. The boundary doubling inequality is derived from the combination of local Carleman estimates and global Carleman estimates. Some special attentions are paid to overcome the regularity issues arising from this boundary value problem.

Abstract:We provide fine asymptotics of solutions of fractional elliptic equations at boundary points where the domain is locally conical; that is, corner type singularities appear. Our method relies on a suitable smoothing of the corner singularity and an approximation scheme, which allow us to provide a Pohozaev type inequality. Then, the asymptotics of solutions at the conical point follow by an Almgren type monotonicity formula, blow-up analysis and Fourier decomposition on eigenspaces of a spherical eigenvalue problem. A strong unique continuation principle follows as a corollary.

Abstract:We prove a new quantitative uniqueness of continuation for elliptic equations from Cauchy data. We provide a simple and direct proof based only on a Carleman inequality. Similar result for the Stokes equation is also shown.

Abstract:One kind of unique continuation property for a wave equation is discussed. The authors show that, if one classical solution of the wave equation vanishes in an open set on a hyperplane, then it must vanish in a larger set on this hyperplane. The result can be viewed as a localized version of Robbiano's result([9]). The approach involves the localized Fourier-Gauss transformation and unique continuation on a line in the Laplace equation.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the unique continuation and observability of a semi-linear parabolic system in a bounded domain Ω with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We first study the existence and uniqueness of the L[[EQUATION]]-solution to the system when the initial value belongs to L[[EQUATION]](Ω)2. We then build up some observation estimates for this system. As a consequence, we can conclude if two solutions are equal over a nonempty open subset ω[[EQUATION]]Ω at some time T>0, then they coincide over Ω[[EQUATION]][0,T].

Abstract:In this paper, we established a quantitative unique continuation results for a coupled heat equations, with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, on a bounded convex domain Ω of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with smooth boundary ∂Ω. Our result shows that the value of the solutions can be determined uniquely by its value on an arbitrary open subset ω of Ω at any given positive time T.

Abstract:In this article, local unique continuation on a line for solutions of the Helmholtz equation is discussed. The fundamental solution of the exterior problem for the Helmholtz equation have a logarithmic singularity which behaves similar to those of the interior problem for the Laplace equation in two dimension. A Holder-type conditional stability estimate of the proposed exterior problem for the Helmholtz equation is obtained by adopting the complex extension method in Cheng and Yamamoto [J. Cheng and M. Yamamoto, Unique continuation on a line for harmonic functions, Inverse Probl. 14 (1998), pp. 869-882]. Finally, a regularization scheme based on the collocation method is compatible with the Holder-type stability estimate provided that the line does not intersect the boundary of the domain for both the Laplace and the Helmholtz equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a boundary unique continuation property for a fourth-order stochastic parabolic equation evolving in a domain G ⊂ R n . Our result shows that the value of the solution can be determined by the observation on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary. The quantitative version of this property can be derived by the global Carleman estimate, which is deduced from a weighted identity for a fourth-order stochastic parabolic operator. The results in this paper are also new even if the fourth-order stochastic parabolic equation reduces to the corresponding fourth-order deterministic parabolic equation.

Abstract:Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a quasiconvex Lipschitz domain and $A(x)$ be a $d \times d$ uniformly elliptic, symmetric matrix with Lipschitz coefficients. Assume a nontrivial $u$ solves $-\nabla \cdot (A(x) \nabla u) = 0$ in $\Omega$, and $u$ vanishes on $\Sigma = \partial \Omega \cap B$ for some ball $B$. The main contribution of this paper is to demonstrate the existence of a countable collection of open balls $(B_i)_i$ such that the restriction of $u$ to $B_i \cap \Omega$ maintains a consistent sign. Furthermore, for any compact subset $K$ of $\Sigma$, the set difference $K \setminus \bigcup_i B_i$ is shown to possess a Minkowski dimension that is strictly less than $d - 1 - \epsilon$. As a consequence, we prove Lin's conjecture in quasiconvex domains.

Abstract:We consider the following question arising in the theory of differential inclusions: given an elliptic set $\Gamma$ and a Sobolev map $u$ whose gradient lies in the quasiconformal envelope of $\Gamma$ and touches $\Gamma$ on a set of positive measure, must $u$ be affine? We answer this question positively for a suitable notion of ellipticity, which for instance encompasses the case where $\Gamma \subset \mathbb R^{2\times 2}$ is an elliptic, smooth, closed curve. More precisely, we prove that the distance of $D u$ to $\Gamma$ satisfies the strong unique continuation property. As a by-product, we obtain new results for nonlinear Beltrami equations and recover known results for the reduced Beltrami equation and the Monge--Ampère equation: concerning the latter, we obtain a new proof of the $W^{2,1+\varepsilon}$-regularity for two-dimensional solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss local unique continuation for a harmonic function on lines. By using complex extension, we prove a conditional stability estimation for a harmonic function on a line. Our unique continuation is an intermediate property between the classical unique continuation for a harmonic function and the analytic continuation for a holomorphic function. As an application, we show conditional stability up to the boundary ill a Cauchy problem of the Laplace equation.

Abstract:We investigate the quantitative unique continuation of solutions to higher order elliptic equations with singular coefficients. Quantitative unique continuation described by the vanishing order is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize the vanishing order of solutions for higher order elliptic equations in terms of the norms of coefficient functions in their respective Lebesgue spaces. New versions of quantitative Carleman estimates are established.

Abstract:The unique continuation for partial differential equations means that the solutions on a small domain can uniquely determine the solutions on a larger connected domain. In this note, a new unique continuation property for the Lame system in two dimensions is studied. We prove that, if only one component of the solution to a Lame system can be measured on a small domain, the solution on a larger connected domain can be determined up to at most four constants.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the existence of positive solutions for singular elliptic equations with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions involving Sobolev-Hardy critical exponents and Hardy terms by using the concentration compactness principle, the strong maximum principle and the Mountain Pass lemma. We also prove, under complementary conditions, that there is no nontrivial solution if the domain is star-shaped with respect to the origin.

Abstract:Unique continuation problems are considered for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation u(t) + uu(x) + u(xxx) = 0, -infinity < x, t < +infinity.By using the inverse scattering transform and some results from the Hardy function theory, it is proven that if u is-an-element-of L(loc)infinity(R, H(s)(R))(s > 3/2) is a solution of the KdV equation, then it cannot have compact support at two different moments unless it vanishes identically. In addition, it is shown under certain conditions that if u is a solution of the KdV equation, then u must vanish everywhere if it vanishes on two horizontal half lines in the x-t space. This implies that the solution u must vanish everywhere if it vanishes on an open subset in the x-t space. As a consequence of the Miura transformation, the above results for the KdV equation are also true for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation upsilon(t) - 6-upsilon-2-upsilon(x) + upsilon(xxx) = 0, -infinity < x, t < +infinity.
