Abstract:Variation of seepage free surface with time is analyzed by finite element method that can perform the coupled analysis of soil mass deformation and pore water pressure dissipation,and the influence of variation of seepage free surface on excess pore water pressure,soil water potential and foundation pit deformations are also further investigated.It is indicated that excess pore water pressure and soil water potential will decrease when variation of seepage free surface outside the foundation pit is considered.Variation of seepage free surface causes the decrease of water pressure and the increase of effective stress outside the foundation pit,and also causes the decrease of the water head difference between the inside and outside of the foundation pit,and thus further results in the decrease of retaining structure horizontal displacement and pit base heave and the increase of ground surface settlement.

Analysis and prediction of anchored caisson foundation displacement based on monitoring data

Abstract:The monitoring data are used to analyze the settlement development law of the anchor caisson foundation of Wenzhou Oujiang North Portal Bridge after sinking in place, and the subsequent displacement results of the foundation are obtained through numerical analysis. The results show that the numerical calculation for the long-term displacement of the foundation are relatively reliable. The error of the numerical calculation results will be large if the loading rate is too large or too small. Reasonable paving construction process can effectively reduce the impact of foundation displacement on the superstructure.
Simplified Analysis Method for Evaluating Horizontal Deformation of Single Pile Due to Adjacent Foundation Pit Excavation

Abstract:A new simplified analytic solution considering the actual state of ground displacement was proposed based on the virtual mirror technology in order to estimate the response of the existing single pile due to adjacent basement excavation. The virtual mirror technology was used, and the measured deformation of the basement maintenance structures provided easily by the in-situ monitoring technique was utilized. The analytic solution of the greenfield ground movement was developed based on the non-equivalence of the radial movement of the ground. Then the greenfield ground movement was imposed on the pile with the two-stage method by introducing the modified foundation reaction modulus to consider the depth effect of ground. The control differential equation of horizontal displacement of the pile based on Pasternak foundation was established. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by comparison with three-dimensional finite element method analysis and the existed theoretical solution as well as field measured data. The parametric analysis show that increasing the coefficient of subgrade reaction and the bending stiffness of the pile can decrease the maximum horizontal displacement of the pile. When the pile is far from the foundation pit, the maximum horizontal displacement is essentially immune from the bending stiffness of the pile.

Abstract:Recent studies and in-situ tests have found that the ground improvement under embankment is largely different from the building foundation due to embankment' smaller rigidity.The side friction of pile,the axial stress within piles and the depth of pile end penetrating into the embankment and soil were studied numerically under different cushion moduli,pile moduli,soil moduli,replacement ratio and pile length.The author point out that the penetration depth of pile end under embankment disagree with that mentioned in the Technical Code of Pile Foundations due to different causes of pile end penetration.

Abstract:When jacked piles are installed, horizontal and vertical movements develop in the soil surrounding the piles. These movements will tend to develop the displacement in adjacent buildings and roads that have already been built. This paper presents a synthesis of the field measurements obtained in a series of pile installations. The field test was preformed at the HaiYan city in China. The test project included lateral ground deformation, vertical surface displacement, soil excess pore pressure and displacement of adjacent buildings and roads induced by jacked piles. For the project, some measures such as prebored hole and groove were taken in order to decrease the compacting effects on buildings and roads in the vicinity. The results show that the prebored holes and groove to relax stress were effective measures against the compacting effects of pile installation.

Abstract:The effect of further downward excavation beneath an existing building on the pile foundation is different from the one encountered in a newly-created excavation case. Based on the finite-element parameters derived from a case history, a hardening-soil model and a contact-surface model are adopted to simulate the characteristics of soil and the pile-soil interaction, respectively. The three-dimensional finite element framework takes into account the interaction of piled raft foundation, ground and excavation, and is able to investigate the vertical bearing behavior of the existing pile groups after the excavation. The investigation accounts for the effects of end-bearing soil stiffness and excavation depth on the variation trends of pile-head rigidity, pile force, pile shaft resistance, ratio of pile base resistance and soil rebound. The results show that individual piles in an existing pile group subjected to further excavation behaved differently. Increasing the stiffness of the end-bearing soil is crucial to enhancing pile capacity and the critical ratio of pile base resistance. The excavation depth is a key factor that positively influences the mobilization degree of the shaft and base resistances of existing piles. The present results are possible to assist the deformation control of structure underpinning and the design of supplemented pile for further excavation under existing basement.

Abstract:In this study, a 3D numerical model, considering the dynamic interaction between soil, pile foundation, and super structure, and the parameter analysis of internal force response of pile group foundation under differences seismic intensity, was established based on the Bangladesh sewage treatment plant project to investigate the dynamic response of pile group foundation of liquid-containing structures. The results show that the internal force of pile gradually increases with time, and the horizontal dynamic displacement peak value appears earlier under different seismic wave responses and seismic intensity. With the increase of seismic time history, the variation degree of dynamic impedance with frequency and impedance peak will increase. The pile group effect and single pile bearing capacity of foundation in hydraulic fill fine sand and silty clay were verified. By comparing numerical simulation and theoretical calculation, the results show that the pile group foundation exerts the soil squeezing effect after pile construction is completed, and the dynamic elastic modulus of the soil layer can be increased. Simultaneously, the soil layer will have a better integral stiffness. The pile group effect coefficient obtained by the solid perimeter method is most consistent with the numerical simulation method.

Abstract:A deep foundation pit in a station of the Hangzhou subway is adjacent to new high-rise residential buildings on the north side and to the Evergrande foundation pit being excavated on the south side. This work considers the excavation of the foundation pit in the subway station as the research subject, focuses on the difference of the deformation and Earth pressure between the north side and the south side of the foundation pit under these special working conditions through the analysis of the measured data, and compares it with an ordinary foundation pit. Analyzing the measured data reveals that the horizontal displacement of the retaining wall and the ground settlement are far larger on the north side than on the south side, and both often exceed the deformation alarm value; the deformation of the ordinary foundation pit is between the deformation of the overloaded (north) side and that of the unloaded (south) side of the foundation pit. Moreover, the maximum rate of the horizontal creep of the soil and the maximum rate of the creep caused by the ground settlement on the north side of the foundation pit are larger than those on the south side of the foundation pit; the maximum rate of the horizontal creep of the ordinary foundation pit is between the two. The active Earth pressure on the pit wall on the north side is higher than that on the south side of the foundation pit, and because of the surrounding unloading, passive Earth pressure is generated at the bottom of the pit wall on the south side of the foundation pit, which causes it to shift to the outside of the foundation pit. The settlement of the surrounding high-rise buildings and the settlement of the columns are all within the range of the alarm values; also, the buildings settle evenly. Due to the excavation and unloading on the south side of the foundation pit, the uplift of the columns is not considerable.
Field monitoring for silence piling construction in deep soft soil foundation

Abstract:The silence piling process minimises noise and vibration by jacking segmental precast concrete piles into the ground. However in soft clay sites, where piles are closely spaced, significant ground movements can develop during the piling operations. These movements can affect surrounding buildings and services. This paper summarises the monitoring data from two projects in China where inclinometer deflections, heave movements and induced excess pore pressures have been recorded adjacent to the site boundary during piling operations. The measures taken to reduce the ground movements are also described. These included the excavation of perimeter ditches and boring 0.5m diameter holes with sand backfill. These holes where used to encourage ground squeezing and ground loss into the holes. The sand fill also encouraged consolidation of the excess pore pressures in the soft clay.
Consolidation analysis of cement-pile composite foundation under rigid foundation

Abstract:To find out the consolidation characters of composite foundation reinforced by cement-piles, an analytical solution to composite foundation was established. According to the equivalent relationship of the seepage discharge to the volumetric change, the equations for the consolidation of cement-pile reinforced foundations were derived using the concept of average excess porewater pressure. Through the initial and boundary conditions of the composite foundation and the assumption of the equal strain, the equations were solved by separation of variables. The average excess porewater pressure and average percent consolidation of cement-pile and its surrounding soil were obtained, and the degree of consolidation of the composite foundation and the consolidation settlement were acquired. The research results indicate that the data calculated by the analytical equation are consistent with those of finite element analysis, that the consolidation rate of composite foundation reinforced by cement-piles is greater than that of the natural foundation, and that the trend of consolidation rate conforms with that of field observation.

Abstract:The interaction between pile and soil of discrete material piles composite foundation is studied. Experimental investigation indicates that the pile is damaged under some depth to the top. So the composite foundation is divided into 3 different sections: expanding, un-expanding and substratum. According to deformation compatibility condition, a new method to calculate the settlement of the composite foundation is deduced by elastic mechanics. An example is given; and the calculation result is consistent well with the on-the-spot monitoring result.

Abstract:In order to study the impact of test piles on an adjacent metro tunnel, the displacement of the tunnel bal?last bed, the vertical and horizontal displacement as well as the convergence of the tunnel structure were monitored during the construction of the bridge test piles. Two kinds of piling equipment were adopted for test piles of a bridge project in Hangzhou, with casing pipes to be pulled out or not. The results show that bridge pile construction may cause tunnel deformation that is far less than that caused by later settlement of the piles;tunnel deformation fluctu?ates a lot in the course of pulling out the casing pipe, an impact that can be mitigated by slowing down the speed of construction and optimizing the construction scheme;the closer the bridge pile and subway tunnel are, the greater the impact on the subway tunnel is and the larger the radius of the settlement funnel is.
FEM Analysis and Design of Long Short Pile Composite Foundation

Abstract:A practical case of the long short pile composite foundation is presented,in which the long and short piles are made of reinforced concrete and cement soil respectively.The stress distribution and displacement of the long short pile composite foundation、whole long pile composite foundation、whole short pile composite foundation and nature foundation under the same geological condition have been calculated and compared by FEM. The results show that by use of the long short pile composite foundation, the whole settlement is reduced effectively and the settlement difference of foundation slab is cut down. Long pile makes shallow soil stress reducing and deeper soil displacement falling. A design method of the long short pile composite foundation is introduced. After comparing the calculated value of the settlement with the actual measurement , it is proved that the design method is available.

Abstract:In order to investigate the mechanism and the beneficial effect of geogrid-reinforced pile-supported foundation, four comparative model tests were carried out, including unreinforced and no-pile foundation, geogrid-reinforced foundation, pile-supported foundation without geogrid, geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported foundation. The mechanism of geogrid-reinforced pile-supported foundation was described by comparing the results of the tests. The measured and computed results were compared and discussed, and then three-dimensional coupled mechanical and hydraulic numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the beneficial effect of geogrid-reinforced pile-supported foundation. The results show that the vertical displacement of geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported foundation are smaller than that of other cases, while the bearing capacity is larger than that of others. The pile-soil stress ratio of geogrid-reinforced pile-supported foundation is less than that of pile-supported foundation without geogrid under the same loading. With the increase of the spacing between piles, the vertical displacement of geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported foundation increases, while the pile-soil stress ratio decrease. With the increase of geogrid stiffness, the vertical displacement of geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported foundation decrease, while the pile-soil stress ratio increase.

Abstract:In this study, a deep foundation pit project of Nanlishi Road in the Xicheng District of Beijing was taken as the engineering background. Based on the monitoring method of that project and referring to its design scheme principle, this study applied advanced monitoring technology methods such as anchor axial force and deep horizontal displacement monitoring. The mechanism of pile–soil interaction, the stress change and deformation law of the three-pile and two-anchor support systems of deep foundation pits, and the stability of deep foundation pit support in an anhydrous sandy pebble stratum, were studied in depth. Results show: The axial force of the anchor rod had great loss in the early stage of prestressed tension locking; with the deepening of foundation pit excavation, the lateral pressure of stratum increased gradually, and the prestress of the anchor increased until the end of excavation, where it tended to be stable; the maximum horizontal displacement of the pile was smaller than the design value, and the maximum horizontal displacement was not at the top of the pile; the axial force of the prestressed anchor varied with the formation pressure and surrounding load; the tension of the lower anchor had a certain influence on the axial force of the upper anchor. Except for the east side of the foundation pit, the anchors of the first layer were all stabilized at about 140 kN, and the anchors of the second layer were stabilized at about 150 kN. The third row of anchors on the north side was stable at around 170 kN. By analyzing the variation law of stress and deformation of the supporting structure of the foundation pit, the timeliness of the data during the construction process was improved, and a reference is provided for the informatization construction of related working conditions.

Abstract:Taking the deep foundation pit project of Taojiazhai in Shanghai as the background, combined with the real‐time monitoring data, the data variation law of several monitoring items during the excavation of foundation pit are analysed. The results show that the axial force of the support, the lateral displacement of the retaining structure and the uplift of the column increase greatly during the excavation of the foundation pit, and tend to be stable after the floor starts to work. The maximum lateral displacement and the depth of the maximum lateral displacement of the maintenance structure increase with the increase of the excavation depth, and the extremum has a definite relationship with the excavation depth. The lateral displacement of maintenance structure and adjacent pipelines are small at the corner of foundation pit and large at the centre of pit wall. Ground settlement around the foundation pit increases first and then decreases along the direction away from the wall. The calculation formula of the settlement of the soil can be revised by introducing the stiffness correction function to predict the settlement of the pipeline.

Abstract:The large deep foundation pit adjacent to the Hangzhou Metro Line 2, pit-in-pit excavation and the binding beam connecting underground diaphragm wall and a row of the same depth of isolation pile are used as special reinforcement measures. Horizontal displacement, vertical displacement and horizontal convergence of the tunnel caused by excavation are monitored. Rules of the influence of large deep excavation on the nearby tunnel and effect of reinforcement measures are analyzed. Empirical formulas of horizontal displacement of the tunnel is proposed. The results show that the horizontal deformation of normal distribution in tunnel increases obviously and transverse diameter of tunnel increases obviously that leads to the tunnel shows a shape of the horizontal ellipse. The horizontal displacement and convergence of the tunnel satisfies the codes and settlement satisfies the alarm value which is settled. The reinforcement measures of the project are applied to large deep foundation pit. "Step excavation, cut-and-support, step concrete placing" should be taken as excavation methods and width which is exposed of foundation pie adjacent to tunnel caused by excavation can be decreased.

Abstract:During the excavation of a foundation pit, differences in the stiffness of an enclosure structure with different supports may lead to different deformation modes of the enclosure structure. Without considering the effects of both pore-fluid and chemical reactions in the surrounding soils, the existing simplified analytical method is used to approximate pit sidewall deformation curves under four typical pit enclosure deformation modes, so that the horizontal displacement curves of a neighboring single pile are obtained by the image source method. Based on the results obtained from the simplified analytical method, it is concluded that both the maximum cumulative deformation value and the deformation pattern of a foundation pit enclosure structure can have nonnegligible effects on the horizontal displacement of the adjacent single pile. The maximum horizontal displacement of the single pile in the adjacent pit increases linearly with the control parameters of the pit enclosure structure, while it decreases nonlinearly with either an increase in the horizontal distance from the enclosure structure or a decrease in the excavation depth.
