Abstract:Multi-sensor information fusion plays an important role in practical application. Although D-S evidence theory can handle this information fusion task regardless of prior knowledge, counter-intuitive conclusions may arise when dealing with highly conflicting evidence. To address this weakness, an improved algorithm of evidence theory is proposed. First, a new distribution distance measurement method is first proposed to measure the conflict between the evidences, and the credibility degree of the evidences can be obtained. Next, a modified information volume calculation method is also introduced to measure the effect of the evidence itself, and the information volume of the evidences can be generated. Afterwards, the credibility degree of each evidence can be modified based on the information volume to obtain the weight of each evidence. Ultimately, the weights of the evidences will be used to adjust the body of evidence before fusion. A numerical example for engine fault diagnosis exhibits the availability and effectiveness of the proposed method, where the BPA of the true fault is 89.680%. Furthermore, an application for target recognition is given to show the validity of the proposed algorithm, where the BPA of the true target is 98.948%. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has the best performance than other methods.

Abstract:In real applications, sensors may work in complicated environments; thus, how to measure the uncertain degree of sensor reports before applying sensor data fusion is a big challenge. To address this issue, an improved belief entropy–based uncertainty management approach for sensor data fusion is proposed in this article. First, the sensor report is modeled as the body of evidence in Dempster–Shafer framework. Then, the uncertainty measure of each body of evidence is based on the subjective uncertainty represented as the evidence sufficiency and evidence importance, and the objective uncertainty measure is expressed as the improved belief entropy. Evidence modification of conflict sensor data is based on the proposed uncertainty management approach before evidence fusion with Dempster’s rule of combination. Finally, the fusion result can be applied in real applications. A case study on sensor data fusion for fault diagnosis is presented to show the rationality of the proposed method.

Abstract:Based on fuzzy logic theory, a new data fusion method for target identification using D-S evidence theory (Dempster-Shafer theory) is presented. By acquiring signals from multiple sources, the belief function assignment value of each transducer is obtained from extracted eigenvalue by using fuzzy logic. The fusion belief function assignment is received by using D-S evidence theory. To solve the problem of combing evidences with high degree of conflict, a modified D-S evidence theory combination rule is introduced. The problem of inconsistent evidence is handled using the method. More accurate result of target identification can be obtained. A comparison of the results of target identification based on separate original data with those based on fusion data shows that the accuracy of target identification is increased.

Abstract:Abstract In view of the lack of effective information fusion model for heterogeneous multi-sensor, an improved Dempster/Shafer (DS) evidence theory algorithm is designed to fuse heterogeneous multi-sensor information. The algorithm first introduces the compatibility coefficient to characterize the compatibility between the evidence, obtains the weight matrix of each proposition, and then redistributes the basic probability distribution of each focal element to obtain a new evidence source. Then the concept of credibility is introduced, and the average support of evidence credibility and evidence focal element is used to improve the synthesis rule, so as to obtain the fusion result. Compared with other algorithms, the proposed algorithm can solve the problems existing in DS evidence theory when dealing with highly conflicting evidence to a certain extent, and the fusion results are more reasonable and the convergence speed is faster.

Abstract:Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory has been widely used in various fields. However, how to measure the degree of conflict (similarity) between the bodies of evidence is an open issue. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, firstly we propose a modified cosine similarity to measure the similarity between vectors. Then a new similarity measure of basic probability assignment (BPAs) is proposed based on the modified cosine similarity. The new similarity measure can achieve the reasonable measure of the similarity of BPAs and then efficiently measure the degree of conflict among bodies of evidence. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, a weighted average method based on the new BPAs similarity is proposed, and an example is used to show the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:The essential factors of information-aware systems are heterogeneous multi-sensory devices. Because of the ambiguity and contradicting nature of multi-sensor data, a data-fusion method based on the cloud model and improved evidence theory is proposed. To complete the conversion from quantitative to qualitative data, the cloud model is employed to construct the basic probability assignment (BPA) function of the evidence corresponding to each data source. To address the issue that traditional evidence theory produces results that do not correspond to the facts when fusing conflicting evidence, the three measures of the Jousselme distance, cosine similarity, and the Jaccard coefficient are combined to measure the similarity of the evidence. The Hellinger distance of the interval is used to calculate the credibility of the evidence. The similarity and credibility are combined to improve the evidence, and the fusion is performed according to Dempster's rule to finally obtain the results. The numerical example results show that the proposed improved evidence theory method has better convergence and focus, and the confidence in the correct proposition is up to 100%. Applying the proposed multi-sensor data-fusion method to early indoor fire detection, the method improves the accuracy by 0.9–6.4% and reduces the false alarm rate by 0.7–10.2% compared with traditional and other improved evidence theories, proving its validity and feasibility, which provides a certain reference value for multi-sensor information fusion.

Abstract:Decision-making technology based on multi-source information fusion plays an increasingly important role in the field of R&D, design and manufacturing in digital-intelligence industry at the present time. Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory is a method that can effectively integrate multiple sources of information, conduct uncertainty reasoning and support decision making. How to carry out information fusion under the condition of evidence body conflict is the key to the effective application of D-S evidence theory. Moreover, due to the different sources of evidence, the initial importance of each evidence body is also a necessary concern prerequisite for the effective application of D-S evidence theory in real-world decision-making problems. In this paper, we propose an improved D-S evidence theory algorithm based on Spearman correlation analysis. According to the importance of each evidence body, the basic probability assignment (BPA) of D-S evidence theory is revised firstly. Then, based on the correlation of the evidence bodies in the same recognition framework, Spearman correlation coefficient is used to further modify the weight of evidence bodies. Finally, the modified evidence bodies are fused based on the improved evidence combination rule, thus the inference result is obtained. The method proposed in this paper is compared with several existing improved D-S evidence theory algorithms, and the numerical case results show that the proposed method is more robust in obtaining results aligning with common sense. The application results of a reliability prediction case for a new type of armored vehicle show that, for taking the initial importance of each evidence body into account, the proposed method can lead us to a decision that more in line with intuition and field test results compared with other existing improved methods.

Abstract:Dempster–Shafer evidence theory is widely used in multi-sensor data fusion. However, how to manage the counterintuitive result generated by the highly conflicting evidence remains an open question. To solve the problem, a novel multi-sensor data fusion method is proposed, which analyses the credibility of evidence from both the discrepancy between evidences and the factors of evidence itself. Firstly, a new Belief Kullback–Leibler divergence is put forward, which evaluates the credibility of evidence from the discrepancy between evidences. Secondly, another credibility measure called the Probability Transformation Belief Factor is defined, which assesses the credibility of evidence from the evidence itself. These two credibilities are combined as the comprehensive credibility of evidence. Furthermore, considering the uncertainty of evidence, a new belief entropy based on the cross-information within the evidence is presented, which is applied to quantify the information volume of evidence and to adjust the comprehensive credibility of evidence. The adjusted comprehensive credibility is regarded as the final weight to modify the body of evidence. Finally, the Dempster's combination rule is applied for fusion. Experiment and applications show that the proposed method is effective and superior.

Abstract:For solving information fusion problem of inequality important information in integrated target recognition the concept of evidence weight is introduced based on D-S reasoning. For transformation of each evidence according to its weight difference the evidence synthesis is completed using tradition method in integrated target recognition of different grade using this method the problem of target recognition of only same grade sensor using tradition evidence theory can be solved. Abstract:Dempster–Shafer evidence theory plays an important role in multi-sensor information fusion and is widely used in the real world. However, fusing the highly conflicting evidences may emerge counter-intuitive results. Recently, researchers found that weighting evidences based on its corresponding credibility and information volume are effective in dealing with the above problem. So it is still an open issue about how to obtain reasonable weights. In this paper, a new divergence measure method is proposed to measure divergence degree of basic probability assignment based on harmonic mean of Deng relative entropy. In determining information volume, Zhou et al.’s entropy is also introduced with considering the cardinality of the discernment frame. Then the weight for each evidence will be generated by the proposed divergence measure method and the modified information volume. Some numerical examples are illustrated to show the outstanding performance of the proposed divergence measure method, and the optimal weighted evidence combination algorithm also gives the relatively highest belief in multi-sensor target recognition.

Abstract:A fusion filtering algorithm based on D-S theory of evidence is proposed to combat shortcomings of linear and nonlin-ear filtering techniques. It first analyzes how basic D-S theory of evidence can result in limitations and to what degree, and then takes measures to annul dependencies among evidences and adaptively assigns eontradictionary information to conflict-relevant pixels, thus improving the combination criteria of D-S theory of evidence as well as increasing its fusion capability. On this foundation, and for thedisadvantage in hybrid fdters of great risk of misjudging image edges, lower reliabihty, and had error tolerance, we add a multi-sub-source adjudgement criteria, and utilize modified combination criteria in D-S theory of evidenced to perform fusion adjudgement. Subse-quent experimental results show the validity of the algorithm, and thus providing a new way to improve image filtering techniques.

Abstract:Multi-sensor data fusion technology plays an important role in real applications. Because of the flexibility and effectiveness in modeling and processing the uncertain information regardless of prior probabilities, Dempster–Shafer evidence theory is widely applied in a variety of fields of information fusion. However, counter-intuitive results may come out when fusing the highly conflicting evidences. In order to deal with this problem, a novel method for multi-sensor data fusion based on a new belief divergence measure of evidences and the belief entropy was proposed. First, a new Belief Jensen–Shannon divergence is devised to measure the discrepancy and conflict degree between the evidences; then, the credibility degree can be obtained to represent the reliability of the evidences. Next, considering the uncertainties of the evidences, the information volume of the evidences are measured by making use of the belief entropy to indicate the relative importance of the evidences. Afterwards, the credibility degree of each evidence is modified by taking advantage of the quantitative information volume which will be utilized to obtain an appropriate weight in terms of each evidence. Ultimately, the final weights of the evidences are applied to adjust the bodies of the evidences before using the Dempster’s combination rule. A numerical example is illustrated that the proposed method is feasible and effective in handling the conflicting evidences, where the belief value of target increases to 99.05%. Furthermore, an application in fault diagnosis is given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method outperforms other related methods where the basic belief assignment (BBA) of the true target is 89.73%.

Abstract:Uncertainty measure in data fusion applications is a hot topic; quite a few methods have been proposed to measure the degree of uncertainty in Dempster-Shafer framework. However, the existing methods pay little attention to the scale of the frame of discernment (FOD), which means a loss of information. Due to this reason, the existing methods cannot measure the difference of uncertain degree among different FODs. In this paper, an improved belief entropy is proposed in Dempster-Shafer framework. The proposed belief entropy takes into consideration more available information in the body of evidence (BOE), including the uncertain information modeled by the mass function, the cardinality of the proposition, and the scale of the FOD. The improved belief entropy is a new method for uncertainty measure in Dempster-Shafer framework. Based on the new belief entropy, a decision-making approach is designed. The validity of the new belief entropy is verified according to some numerical examples and the proposed decision-making approach.

Abstract:The safe navigation of unmanned surface vehicles in the marine environment requires multi-sensor collaborative perception, and multi-sensor data fusion technology is a prerequisite for realizing the collaborative perception of different sensors. To address the problem of poor fusion accuracy for existing multi-sensor fusion methods without prior knowledge, a fuzzy evidence theory multi-sensor data fusion method with belief divergence is proposed in this paper. First of all, an adjustable distance for measuring discrepancies between measurements is devised to evaluate the degree of measurement closeness to the true value, which improves the adaptability of the method to different classes of sensor data. Furthermore, an adaptive multi-sensor measurement fusion strategy is designed for the case where the sensor accuracy is known in advance. Secondly, the affiliation function of the fuzzy theory is introduced into the evidence theory approach to assign initial evidence of measurements in terms of defining the degree of fuzzy support between measurements, which improves the fusion accuracy of the method. Finally, the belief Jensen–Shannon divergence and the Rényi divergence are combined for measuring the conflict between the evidence pieces to obtain the credibility degree as the reliability of the evidence, which solves the problem of high conflict between evidence pieces. Three examples of multi-sensor data fusion in different domains are employed to validate the adaptability of the proposed method to different kinds of multi-sensors. The maximum relative error of the proposed method for multiple sensor experiments is greater than or equal to 0.18%, and its error accuracy is much higher than the best result of 0.46% among other comparative methods. The experimental results verify that the proposed data fusion method is more accurate than other existing methods.

Abstract:As an efficient tool in handling uncertain issues, Dempster-Shafer evidence theory has been increasingly used in structural health monitoring and damage detection. In applications, however, Dempster-Shafer evidence theory sometimes leads to counter-intuitive results. In this study, a new fusion algorithm of evidence theory is put forward to address various counter-intuitive problems and manage the reliability difference of the evidence. The proposed algorithm comprises the following aspects: (1) Dempster's combination rule is generalized by introducing the concept of evidence ullage. The new rule allows classical Dempster's rule and can resolve counter-intuitive problems cause by evidence conflict and evidence compatibility; (2) a reliability assessing method based on a priori and posterior knowledge is proposed. Compared with conventional reliability assessment, the proposed method can reflect the actual evidence reliabilities and can efficiently reduce decision risk. Numerical examples confirm the validity and utility of the proposed algorithm. In addition, an experimental investigation on a spatial truss structure is carried out to illustrate the identified ability of the proposed approach. The results indicate that the fusion algorithm has no strict request on the accuracy and consistency of evidence sources and can efficiently enhance diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract:Dempster–Shafer (D–S) evidence theory is widely used in various fields of information fusion. However, it is still an open issue that the D–S evidence theory may produce the counter–intuitive results in fusing high–conflict evidences. Aim at this problem, a novel conflict evidence fusion method based on the composite discount factor and the game theory is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an improved Shafer's conflict measurement formula based on the Jaccard similarity coefficient is devised, and combined with the Jousselme distance into a novel binary function to measure the global conflict between evidences as the evidence falsity. Then, the local conflict between evidences and the information volume of evidences are measured by using the Jousselme distance and belief entropy to indicate the credibility and uncertainty of evidences. Next, based on the game theory, the falsity, credibility and uncertainty are weighted and combined into the composite discount factors to correct each body of evidence (BOE). Ultimately, all corrected evidences are fused by Dempster's combination rule to obtain the final result. Two numerical examples are given to verify that the proposed method is effective and feasible, which outperforms the previous methods in handling the conflict evidences.

Abstract:With the development of complex evidence theory in the application of multisource information fusion, classical Dempster–Shafer evidence theory has been extended to complex plane, called complex evidence theory. However, counterintuitive result may occur in the case when fusing conflicting complex evidences. To address this problem, a new multisource information fusion method is proposed by means of complex evidential distance function. This proposed method can reduce the impact of abnormal complex evidence on the fusion results to better support decision. A numerical example and an application of medical diagnosis verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed fusion method.

Abstract:An enhanced evidence theory-based multisensor data fusion technique is presented to address the problem of poor data fusion caused by an unknown interference in the fully automated mining face multisensor system of a coal mine. Initially, the set of all measurement values is considered as the identification framework, and the principles of fuzzy mathematics are applied to introduce the membership function. This leads to the proposal of a novel method for calculating mutual support among multiple sensors. Furthermore, the basic belief assignment (BBA) in evidence theory is determined by measuring the confidence distance between sensors. Subsequently, a divergence measure is employed to assess the level of conflict and difference between BBA functions, which serves as an indicator of their credibility. The credibility of BBA functions is further adjusted by calculating their information volume using Shannon entropy. This adjustment aims to increase the weight of BBA functions that exhibit less conflict with other BBA functions. Ultimately, the fusion result is obtained through an evidence combination rule based on a conflict allocation. The numerical experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves higher accuracy, better robustness, and generality compared to the existing methods.

Abstract:The multi-sensor data fusion is generally based on the evidence theory,but the key is to build the discernment frame and to assign the basic probability.This paper presents the evidence theory and analyzes disadvantages of the weighted fusion with the least square.With the introduction of the abstract sensor,from the interval coverage times of the function M of multi-sensor data,the basic probability assignment can be obtained.And it is taken for support degrees of history data and sensors so as to process the weighting data fusion.The experiment illustrates that the method of the multi-sensor fusion based on Dempster-Shafer theory needs less prior information and it is resultful and robust.
