Abstract:Nanostructured materials have attracted tremendous attention in both fundamental studies and applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Of the various types of nanostructured materials, TiO2 nanomaterials are extensively studied for their broad range of applications. A number of methods have been developed for preparing TiO2 nanoparticles, nanorods, whiskers, nanowires, nanotubes and mesoporous TiO2 films. In this chapter, we describe two novel methods recently developed in our laboratory to grow TiO2 nanostructured materials directly on titanium (Ti) substrate. Dense and well-aligned TiO2 nanorod arrays form on a Ti substrate when using organic molecules, such as ethanol, acetaldehyde, acetone and dibutyltin dilaurate, as the oxygen source in the oxidation of Ti at high temperatures. In contrast, polycrystalline grains are formed when pure oxygen and formic acid are used as the oxygen source; elongated micro-crystals are produced when water vapor is used as the oxygen source; whereas the use of argon with a low concentration of oxygen produces random nanofibers growing from the ledges of the TiO2 grains. Measurements of the water contact angle of these samples show that the wetting properties of the TiO2 films are dictated by their structure, varying from a hydrophilic surface (polycrystalline grains) to hydrophobic (random nanofibers), and towards a highly-hydrophobic surface (well-aligned nanorod arrays). Secondly, we have synthesized large-scale Na2Ti6O13 nanoplates, nanowires, and continuous nanowire network films directly on Ti substrate hydrothermally. The morphology of the formed Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures is easily tuned by varying the experimental parameters of temperature, reaction duration and NaOH concentrations. Our study shows that the synthesized Na2Ti6O13 nanostructures are easily converted into H2Ti3O7 nanostructures, a desirable precursor for the fabrication of various TiO2-based nanomaterials such as anatase, a mixture of anatase and rutile, and rutile TiO2 nanomaterials, with shape-preservation through an ion-exchange process. The approaches described in this chapter provide simple and novel methods to synthesize various large-scale TiO2-based nanostructured materials. This tunable growth of TiO2 nanostructures is desirable for the promising applications of TiO2 nanomaterials in the development of photo-catalysts, optical devices, sensors and self-cleaning coatings.
